Iwobi marches on with Everton to relegation

There’s almost no stopping the Toffees now from going down

By Ed Emeanua

The Toffee’s midfield ace Alex Iwobi failed to stem the slide of his team to Championship football next season as Everton fell 2-1 to a home defeat at Goodison Park to visitors Fulham on Saturday.

But it was not without a fight. In a see-saw match with a lot of twist and turns, Harrison Reeds opened scoring on 22′ for Fulham.

During moments in the early part of the first half, Everton wore a forlorn look and was bereft of ideas like a Nomad lost in the desert as Fulham took control.

Reed then found the net in the 22nd minute when he tucked in the rebound after a Harry Wilson’s shot struck the post giving manager Marco Silva’s side the lead.

The goal later proved to be a tonic for Everton’s jagged edges as the Toffees came alive with their Goodison Park faithful spurring them on.

Sean Dyche made a tactical tweak already by going 4-5-1 with Gray relocating to the left and Iwobi taking up a more central midfield role in a change that was badly required.

From then on, the home team began to have a say. Neal Maupay’s header was pincered off by Fulham goalie Bernd Leno only for James Tarkowski to fire the rebound over the bar.

Everton then found the mark when Dwight McNeil’s low left-footer from the right found the net after being picked out by Garner.

Both sides settled for 1-1 at the interval.

In the second half, Fulham easily scored again after the home team had crawled back into their shells yet again.

This allowed Wilson to riffle his 51st minute shot past Everton’s goalie Jordan Pickford in a goalmouth melee.

From then, Fulham took complete control of the game. In waves after waves, Fulham stormed on. Pereira somehow construed to fire atop Everton’s post from close-range missing the third of Fulham’s chances within two minutes to put the tie to bed for Silva’s side.

Finally, Fulham scored their third goal at Goodison Park after Dan James shot went past Pickford into Everton’s goalposts in the 68′.

The goal was enough to send steadily Everton marching on towards relegation lane.

Premier League Weekend Bash

Aston Villa roars on, easily dusts off Newcastle United in continental football chase

Ollie Watkins’ brace of goals and Jacob Ramsey’s lone strike were enough to hand Newcastle a 3-0 win over fellow European football contenders at Villa Park Saturday.

Villa remains on 6th spot on the table and in contention for a Europa League spot, still two points behind Newcastle whose 4th position puts them in the running for the more UEFA Champions League spot.

Ramsey opened scoring for the home side on 11 minutes following by Ramsey’s two second half goals on 64′ and 82′ in the tie.

McGinn to Moreno, Moreno then picks out Watkins who swivels past Dan Burn and fires home for 2-0. A lovely goal, that!

Newcastle were quiet for most of the second half but began the second stanza more briskly. That was until the 64th minute when McGinn found Moreno, Moreno in turn locates Watkins who evades Dan Burn before riffling home the second goal for a Villa 2-0 lead.

Then McGinn  worked hard on the right before slipping in a pass to Buendia whose cut back misses Ramsey for Watkins to tuck away his second strike and Villa’s third on 84′.

If Villa’s second goal was splendid, their third was a delight to watch.

It is beginning to look like everything he touches now turns to gold at the moment! That is Ramsey’s of course, whose new found form under manager Unai Emery at Villa Park has been phenomenal.

McGinn with some great work down the right, he slips in Buendia who cuts the ball back. Ramsey misses it and there’s Watkins to tuck away his second and Villa’s third. Game. Over.

Time again, Villa moved the ball to both side of the pitch before locating a someone from the middle with the force to breach Newcastle’s rear. The visitors failed to find a solution to turnaround the tide.

Super Computer downgrades Super Eagles Stars

Nine Super Eagles feature in WWW.SUPEREAGLESRELEGATION.COM as their English sides face imminent Premier League relegation

Super Eagles stars in (from the left), Wilfred Ndidi, Taiwo Awoniyi, Paul Onuachu and Alex Iwobi face relegation with various Premier League clubs

The  2022/2023 Premier League is at its concluding half but the epitaph of the current relegation battle in English Premiership football  could be choreographed, packaged, and then flagged under the befitting banner-www.supereaglesrelegation.com. Now, do you have to go there to read that up you may ask? No, you may not. It is all here; and we bring it to you in this feature news. Enjoy.

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The OPTA Super Computer analysis has condemned as many as a combination of nine possible Super Eagles players to end up playing in the immediate lower cadre of English football in the 2023/2024 season.

The endangered Nigerian players comprise seven current Super Eagles stars and two likely future Nigeria callups.

All in all, seven top Super Eagles regular invitees, with another two possible future callups, are currently languishing at the relegation end of the English Premier League with their club sides.

The periled nine must now dig digger for that inner resolve that they would need to avoid the dreaded drop into the abyss that is English Championship football next term.

They are Leicester City pair of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, Nottingham Forest’s duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis, and the Southampton’s twosome-Joe Aribo and Wilfred Ndidi, with Everton FC’s Alex Iwobi making up the number.

The involved Nigeria internationals are presently fated for EPL relegation dog fight spiraling around their clubs and careers as they stare down the dark and lonely stretch of the unwanted relegation lane that surely leads no where, other than straight to the less glamorous English Championship League.

They’re Joe Aribo (Southampton), Paul Onuachu (Southampton), Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City), Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City), Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest).

Bournemouth’s forward Dominic Solanke and Southampton midfielder Nathan Tella are players whose sides are also involved in the current Premiership relegation dogfight. They are of Nigerian heritage and can still be called up by the African footballing giants.

As the battle for survival in the Premier League rages on with its twists and turns amidst uncertainty for the fate of certain teams and players, it is becoming very feasible that the trio of Tella, Aribo and Paul Onuachu’s Southampton are the most endangered of the Super Eagles species.

Their team-Southampton-are the number one relegation favorites according to the current odds released by OPTA Super Computer analysis.

According to the Super Computer, Southampton are almost neck deep in the mire of the current EPL relegation survival battle to the point that it is almost inevitable that the side will be relegated to the Championship this summer.

Iwobi, Awoniyi, 5 Other Nigerians Who Could Be Relegated With Their Clubs This Term in the EPL - SportsBrief.comEverton’s Alex Iwobi and Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi are battling relegation with their EPL clubs

OPTA odds show that Southampton now has a 1/6 chance of going down to play championship football next season.

Deninis and Awoniyi’s Northingham Forest are next in line for the drop to the next lower tier of English football, OPTA also says.

A six- game run without a win for Stephen Cooper’s side is just enough to shove them on standby with a 2/5 odds to escape relegation.

This qualifies them for the ignominy of being the second Premier Leaguers with Super Eagles stars tipped to go down by OPTA.

Iwobi and his Everton side may still fancy their chance of ultimately surviving relegation when all is said and done, but according to OPTA Super Computer analysis, their odds of doing so has only drastically decreased from 6/4 to 7/4 after their 2-0 defeat by Manchester United last weekend.

The Toffees currently occupy the 17th position on the current league table with 27 points from 30 matches, just two points above the relegation zone and with 8 matches to play.

Also, Everton manager, Sean Dyche has a big job on his hands as the Toffees are now forced to beat the Likes of Manchester City, Brighton FC, Newcastle FC, and fellow struggles Leicester City should they hope to maintain their Premier League status this summer.

Leicester Suffer Home Loss To BournemouthMidfielder Wilfred Ndidi must fight very hard with his teammates to remain in the Premier League with Leicester City

Ndidi and Iheanacho’s Leicester city is 4th on the OPTA rankings to go down, with an 8/4 odd to lose their Premier league rank at the end of this season.

The Foxes have struggled this term from lengthy injury layoffs to important players. They have only managed to salvage a single point from the available 21 on offer in as much as 7 games. Leicester will need a mighty tall ladder to be able to climb out from the dreaded abyss of Premiership relegation zone where they currently find themselves, according to OPTA analysts.

The OPTA computer model estimates the probability of each match outcome, considers the strength of opponents by using the match outcome before posting the odds.

Solanke’s Bournemouth occupy the 15th spot on the table with 30 points from 30 games, just three points above the relegation zone. They are also good for the drop and they know it.

With as many as 6 to 7 of its stars facing relegation, Super Eagles  must now dig in dipper to find the inner depth required to qualify and do well at next year’s African Nations Cup and in the yet to commence 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Chimaev wants UFC champion Adesanya next

0

‘We can’t be ridiculous,’ says Eugene Bareman

City Kickboxing coach Eugene Bareman questions what Khamzat Chimaev has done to deserve a shot at Israel Adesanya,

After Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) reclaimed his middleweight title with a knockout of Alex Pereira in this past Saturday’s UFC 287 headliner, Chimaev (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) called him out.

With Adesanya already holding wins in his previous reign over top contenders Robert Whittaker, Marvin Vettori, Jared Cannonier, and Paulo Costa, there appears to be no clear-cut No. 1 contender. But just because that’s the case, Bareman says that doesn’t mean Chimaev deserves it.

“Has Khamzat fought at middleweight yet? We can’t be ridiculous,” Bareman told Submission Radio. “This is the most prestigious title in the sport. Sometimes business takes precedent, I understand that. You’re just devaluing the organization, you’re devaluing the sport, you’re devaluing everything that we’ve stood for.”

Chimaev competed twice in the UFC at middleweight, scoring a submission of John Phillips in his debut and a 17-second knockout of Gerald Meerschaert in September 2020.

Bareman clarified that they’re in no way shying away from the challenge. He just thinks Chimaev needs to climb his way up at middleweight – even if it’s in a fast-tracked way like Pereira did.

“At the minimum, fight three guys that no one’s ever heard of, like Pereira,” Bareman said. “I’m not arguing against fighting Khamzat. I think Khamzat would be a great fight. He’s a big name, he’s a challenge, and we’re all about challenges. He brings high-level MMA wrestling to the sport.

“That’s a challenge, and I love the challenge. But I’m arguing for the prestige of the UFC, for the brand and for the sport. Khamzat would be a great fight and like Israel says to all these opponents, ‘I hope you go out there and get the job done.’ Do your job so that you can see him.”

‘I’ll wipe the floor with Joshua’

Joe Joyce wants to fight Anthony Joshua for being jealous of him

Video: Anthony Joshua sparring with Joe Joyce before a fight

Joe Joyce has promised to wipe the ring floor with Anthony Joshua should he finally gets the chance to fight him in the ring.

Joyce is looking for a fight badly and he wants it to happen soonest with none other than his former sparring partner, Joshua, whom he accused of being jealous of his rise to ring superstardom.

Both men have sparred zillions of minutes but are yet to battle it out officially inside a squared circle.

According to the UK Express, Joyce, now wants that to change permanently as he is convinced his fellow British heavyweight and foe, views him with jealousy now he been fortunate to climb to the “top of the mountain.”

The Juggernaut fights Zhilei Zhang Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London and a win could place him directly in line for a  first shot at a world title in his professional career.

At the same time, Joshua’s once twinkling star has dimmed as a result of consecutive loses to Oleksandr Usyk and an unimpressive victory over Jermaine Franklin on his comeback fight April 1 at the O2 Arena .

Joyce and Joshua have practiced together thousands of rounds over the years and a possible faceoff is shaping up as a major possibility but with the Juggernaut presently on the ascendancy in his career, an AJ victory is no longer taken as a routine.

The provisional champion of the WBO heavyweight division is uncompromising in his view that Joshua now hopes to swap places with him, as he labored to agitate the hornet’s nest with a secession of taunts.

“Recently, there’s been some bad blood, but maybe we can settle it in the ring some day,” Joyce said with a scowl.

“He must have got rid of his phone after the loss to Andy Ruiz. It was a huge fall from grace, especially when he was built and he had this unbeatable air and it kind of all crumbled, and people’s perceptions about him have changed as well.

“He’s younger than me, so he still has time, but he’s already been to the top of the mountain. I’m right there, and he wants what I got now because I got a title, and that could be his route back in.”

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s fight maker has earlier disclosed that Joshua is thrilled by the idea of a fight with Joyce who is among his likely picks for his next bout later in the year.

AJ was originally planning to resume fighting this summer but he has just made it public that his next fight will now hold in December.

On Saturday April 15, Max Holloway meets Arnold Allen in a featherweight Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bone crusher billed for the T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City.

Arguably the second best featherweight fighter in the company’s history, Holloway boasts a 16-0 record in his class against all foes but for Alexander Volkanovski. However, his July loss by decision to the reining champion regressed his record to 0-3 in that faceup, allowing minimal chance for moving up from his present spot.

Allen, on the other hand, will not be easy picking for anyone with just the motive of using him to move up the ranks. With ten back-to-back Octagon brawls to his name and a fearsome 19-1 record, his winning aura is at par with Volkanovski as the second-longest in UFC featherweight epoch.

British Featherweight Arnold Allen vs Former Champion Max Holloway » Kimura Performance LtdHolloway meets Allen

One more victory and he could just be within finger tip reach of a title challenge, uniquely so, as it could also be at the expense of such an awesome headliner like Holloway.

Holloway’s three losses to Volkanovski may have dented his UFC record. Nonetheless, he remains an A-list fighter. He has been a featherweight division virtuoso through and through and has understandably left an indelible mark as a result.

Allen on the other hand, is a UFC star on the ascendancy, more so, as he is yet to lose a fight under the brand. He has equally cut a measurable confident figure for this clash, and has notably called out Holloway’s longevity during their promos of this big showdown.

The new age of combat sports has seen the sudden jump of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) over boxing as the modern fans’ favorite fighting panorama.

Yet, among all the venerated MMA jousts available out there, UFC remains one for top picking just for its brand of action packed shows and bone crunching ensemble, and it is just as well.

This weekend’s main card in Kansas City between UFC megastar Holloway and British upcomer and new sensation, Arnold Allen, supports just that.

This intensely awaited featherweight contest in the 145-pound category chronicles the return of former UFC featherweight champion Holloway to the blood cuddling octagon and qualifies for a major bloody mouth waterer for fight loving fans, any day.

The show on Saturday will go LIVE in Spanish and English on ESPN+, and it is important to emphasize that the supporting bouts before the main event will exclusively air on ESPN+.

Will Tuchel get a third strike you’re out?

Sacked back-to-back by PSG and Chelsea following UCL failures, will Bayern Munich also send the coach packing if he again fails to progress this time, over Man City?

Champions League: Manchester City v Bayern Munich – in pictures | Football | The Guardian

By Ed Emeanua

Is it a case of three strikes and you’re out for the venerable Thomas Tuchel at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, following their 3-0 mauling by a Manchester City side on a rampage at the Etihad Stadium Tuesday?

Finally, is it time for the German manager to be sacked for good after he  has again failed to satisfy the UCL Championship appetite of yet another club, thereby, earning him his third straight strike as well as his third back-to-back dismissal by a club side?

The reverse fixture of this dicey UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter finals tie scheduled for Munich in just a matter of days may yet hold the key that would seal the fate of these giants of modern European football.

It would inevitably reveal to the football fraternity which of the pair wound advance to the next stage of the continent’s most glamorous club football schedules, and which of them must fall by the way side.

It could also reveal the fate of Bayern’s manager at a club that hired him after despite suffering back-to-back dismissals by his two previous clubs after crashing out with them in the same championship.

Before this game and even deep into it, nobody in their right mind would dare to predict such a scandalous scoreline at such a level of the UCL.

Most had actually predicted a tight game with a likely marginal victory at the least for any of the teams, or if the worst must come to the worst, a draw with a lean scoreline at the most.

Manchester City 3-0 Bayern Munich: Pep's men pummel former side in first-leg stunner

Pep’s men pummel former side in first-leg stunner

Well, well, well! This is football for you!

It football and just a game where predictions mostly end as the dream of fogged minds, or the mere conjecture of sundry whimsical thinkers.

Though, before the 27th minute of this pulsating tie, all bets were still on the table for the taking as Tuchel’s side kept its defensive shape as Pep Guardiola’s Man City chose the more conservative approach of being contented to just pick-and-roll in counter-attacking spurts.

Then, Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, or Rodri for short, struct on the 27th minute mark to edge Man City into the lead.

This was only Rodri’s goal second goal ever in his quite illustrious UCL championship career, a strike that would remain a sensational masterpiece any day.

Someone should have picked up the Spaniard as he dangerously lurked outside Bayern’s eighteen yards box, but failed to do so.

When the ball eventually found Rodri, Jamal Musiala had rushed the rescue, but was deftly side-stepped, before finding more than enough time to curl diligently his left footed shot beyond the futile sprawling reach of Yann Sommer in Bayern’s goal.

The very cagey Man City team, however held on their slim lead, till the end of the first half.

In the second half, Man City continued to pick-and roll in spurts as usual, until a piece of tantalizing counter-attacking football display in the 70th minute saw Bernardo Silva connect his powerful header unto Jack Grealish’s well timed cross from the left following Dayot Upamecano’s woeful defense-line mixup, to score the second goal for Man City.

As expected, Erling Haaland, the Man City Norwegian prolific scorer wont be left unsung. His strike and Man City’s third on the day appeared to be the death knell for Bayern’s defensive lapses and unbeaten record in this 2022-2023 UCL championship. But with the second leg in Munich still to be played, who can tell?

After all, this is still a game of football, where all predictions remain mere whimsical conjectures until the game is played, won, lost or drawn.

As it is commonly stated in football parlance, ‘it is not over until it is over,’ and you can bet that. Well! Well! Well!
