Manchester United dumps Andre Onana transfer

Exploring cheaper alternatives as club can’t afford £50m Goalkeeper

Erik ten Hag has been forced to consider cheaper alternatives as the club are unable to sanction a £50million move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, Sean Kearns reports for the UK Metro.

The 27-year-old had been identified by the Dutchman as the perfect replacement for David De Gea.

The Spaniard is a free agent after his contract with the club expired on Friday.

Though United remain in talks with De Gea, Ten Hag is keen to sign a new number 1 that is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Onana is keen on a move to Old Trafford and Inter are willing to sell, provided United match their asking price of around £50m.

But, having agreed a £60m move to sign Mason Mount, United are walking a Financial Fair Play tightrope.

Ten Hag has a budget of around £120m this summer and he’s expected to use the remaining money on signing a striker once Mount is through the door.

Without significant departures, Ten Hag will be forced to choose between Onana and a £60m-rated striker and the Dutchman feels a forward is the more pressing concern.

United are therefore looking at cheaper alternatives to Onana, with Frankfurt stopper Kevin Trapp in the frame.

The Athletic claim United have made contact with Feyenoord over a move for Justin Bijlow but the Dutch giants are unwilling to sell.

Every signing Chelsea have made so far

During the summer transfer window 2023

Chelsea hit the headlines with their lavish and wild spending last season during Todd Boehly’s first term as the club’s new owner, Harry Thomas-Humphreys reports for the UK Metro.

The club spent £585 million on 16 new players across the 2022/23 season – only for the club to finish an embarrassing 12th place in the Premier League table.

And with Mauricio Pochettino taking up the reigns as the new manager, the club have vowed not to repeat the mistakes made in the transfer market last term.

It remains to be seen whether or not another huge influx of players will arrive at the club ahead of the 2023/24 season, but Chelsea have already kickstarted their transfer business this summer with a number of new faces already through the door.

Let’s take a look at every signing Chelsea have made so far during the summer transfer window 2023.

Christopher Nkunku

Nkunku agreed a pre-contract agreement to join the Blues from Leipzig back in December but it took until this summer for the deal, reported to be for £63 million, to be announced by the club.

The 25 year-old French international, who has won ten caps for his country and is comfortable playing in a variety of positions in the forward areas, scored 23 goals in 36 games for the Bundesliga side last season.

Speaking to the club’s website, Nkunku said: ‘I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea.

‘A big effort was made to bring me to the club and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and team-mates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch.’

Kendry Paez

The Ecuadorian wonderkid has signed for Chelsea from Independiente del Valle for around £17 million.

Paez, who turned 16 in May, will head to west London when he turns 18 – meaning he is set to join the club in the summer of 2025.

Comfortable playing in midfield and on the wing, Paez made his debut for Independiente del Valle when he was 15 and is the youngest debutant and goalscorer in the history of the Ecuadorian first division.

Paez also scored one goal and registered three assists for Ecuador at this year’s U20 World Cup in Argentina.

Dujuan Richards

Richards, 17, has been recruited by Chelsea from the Kingston-based Phoenix All Stars Academy but he will not join the club until his 18th birthday next year.

The Jamaican striker made his senior international debut in March and was named in Jamaica’s squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier this year.

Richards scored 31 goals and registered nine assists playing for Kingston College at college level.

Patrick Vieira lands Strasbourg job

Patrick Vieira has been confirmed as new manager of Racing Strasbourg, shortly after the group that owns Chelsea took majority ownership of the Ligue 1 club, Phil Haigh reports for the UK Metro.

BlueCo, the group led by Blues owner Todd Boehly, took over at Strasbourg last month and have moved quickly to bring in the Arsenal legend.

Vieira was last in work at Crystal Palace, surprisingly sacked in March, although his replacement, Roy Hodgson, has done brilliantly since.

The 47-year-old returns to France where he had previously been in charge of Nice from 2018-20 and sounds excited about the project as he signs a three-year contract.

‘I am particularly happy to join Racing,’ said Vieira. ‘I know the history and the identity of this club, the fervor it arouses, the importance it has for its region, which is a place of football and passion.

‘The rebuilding of the club in recent years, under the direction of [club president] Marc Keller, is an example to be admired. Working with him is a real pleasure for me. Today, a new cycle begins for Racing and it is exciting as a coach to be able to build something while relying on the values that have defined the strength of the club.’

Keller added: ‘I welcome Patrick Vieira, whom I know from the French national team; I am very happy to welcome him to Strasbourg. Patrick’s arrival should allow us to make further progress and to take a step forward.

‘He corresponds to the profile we were looking for: a manager with international experience, and who also has a good knowledge of Ligue 1 and its young players. We are convinced that he will be able to do a very good job here, in a healthy and fulfilling environment. We are going to put him in the best conditions so that he can succeed.’

On BlueCo’s purchase in June, a club statement read: ‘The shareholders of Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace today announced an agreement with BlueCo, the consortium which purchased Chelsea FC in May 2022.

‘The agreement would mark a new chapter in Racing’s history as the ownership consortium commits to accelerate sustainable investment in the club’s growth, including in the first teams and in the academy, in continuity with the project implemented by Marc Keller, who would remain president of the club, supported by his current management team.

‘Through its involvement and recognized expertise in sport, BlueCo plans to make an active contribution to the development of the model implemented by Marc Keller, first, financially, by providing capital that will enable investment in the men’s and women’s first teams, the academy and across the club.

‘It also plans to provide Racing access to broad resources and collaboration. Racing’s teams would be able to exchange advice and expertise with Chelsea and the other teams which the owners are involved with.’

Fresh images have emerged of what could be Chelsea’s away kit for the 2023/24 season with a stunning Nike design, Kieran Horn writes for Football London. Details over what will be the Blues home and away kits this season are yet to be confirmed as uncertainty surrounding who will be the main shirt sponsors rumbles on following the deal with Three expiring on June 30.

The news caused quite the fan backlash with the ban on gambling companies having sponsorship deals with English teams set to commence from the end of the 2025/26 season.

Nonetheless, the decision looks to have already been made which will see Stake, who have also sponsored Everton and Watford, displayed across the Chelsea shirts in fancy writing for the next campaign.

How the shirts will look or be designed is currently unknown but Chelsea supporters may have been handed a glimpse of their away kit. As revealed by Footy Headlines, the Blues away kit will have a retro feel as the colours are inspired by the away jersey from the 2002/03 season.

https://twitter.com/Footy_Headlines/status/1675318633390546945?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1675318633390546945%7Ctwgr%5E6c57286511871970c4b6c956481ec0bc99feafc0%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.football.london%2Fchelsea-fc%2Fnews%2Fnew-chelsea-away-kit-leaked-27239706

The leaked design, which does not include a main sponsor, is a mixture of navy blue and light blue that shows large diamonds scattered across the shirt with smaller shapes inside of them. While there is similarities to the kit from 20 years ago involving colours, the actual designs couldn’t be more different.

The leaked kit shows a very futuristic style, whereas the 02/03 strip is a basic design that looks simple and sharp eyes may also spot that the blue color used for the base, collar, and sleeve cuffs, which is soar, is the same as the one used for the Barcelona 2021/2022 home kit.

he Nike logo, border of the Chelsea badge and lion inside the crest are also interesting things to note as they look to be a shining gold. The remaining parts of the badge then fit with the sharp black that dominated the majority of the strip.

Chelsea’s home and away kits for the upcoming campaign are expected to be released in July.

Update: Footy Headlines can leak more pictures of the Nike Chelsea 2023-2024 home kit. They greatly show off the metallic logos, the interesting back and the collar detail.

Chelsea have no main sponsor for the 2023-2024 season yet. The three-year deal with telecommunications company Three expires at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

What and who can stop Djokovich Now?

With Nadal, the only man on earth capable of stopping the Serb out injured, Novak Djokovich is on a roller coaster ride to the Wimbledon slam

Novak Djokovic Dethrones Rafael Nadal After Roland Garos Epic | ATP Tour | TennisThis year’s Wimbledon will be missing the Novak Djokovich versus Rafael Nadal Tennis classic

Ed Emeanua

It’s not only a question of who, it also includes what, can stand in the way of Novak Djokovich stretching beyond natural limits, his fast increasing Grand Slam wins at Wimbledon 2023?

With old nemesis Rafael Nadal already laid out on the injured queue slab, it is highly within the confines of rationalization to conclude that the ‘who’ in stopping the Serbian’s formidable World Tennis arsenal is now totally out of commission.

What is now left for the world to get a break from watching on helplessly as Djokovich performs another simple task of just coasting to another slam at Wimbledon this summer is perhaps an act of God or nature. Even that too, is inconceivable.

Rafael Nadal is passing up the year’s Wimbledon as Djokovic expects to stretch his intimidating Grand Slam wins.

That perhaps is already granted and leaves room for Djokovic to create more separation at the summit of the unsurpassed men’s Grand Slam championship grids.

With Nadal now certain to missout on Wimbledon due to injury, Djokovic is all but handed a good chance to land his 24th slam.

Also, with the Serb’s only performing top three foes now nearing retirement avenue, the existing gulf to catching up with Djokovic’s marauding slam winning rampage is fast expanding into a chasm.

It is anticipated that Nadal will finally move on into retirement avenue at the end of next season as the injury woes that have plagued and determined him to missout this year’s championship lingers.

Nadal’s absence at the French Open, which remains his lucrative hunting ground, easily allowed Djokovic to win and go one up over the 37-year-old on 23 primetime victories.

As Nadal battles to be fit and ready, the Tennis Universe have watched on with awe as Djokovic easily dominated and won three out of the last four in seasonal Grand Slam championships. He is now but set to extend it to four from five triumphs at Wimbledon except an act of nature or something more sinister stops him.

In the next two weeks hereafter, only Carlos Alcaraz seems to be his only formidable contender for the Wimbledon plate. That too is no match for the superhuman powers of an unstoppable Djokovich that is now more than hellbent on leaving his indelible mark on history.

Will Shields grant Marshall her rematch?

Brit bomber ringfences all four 168 lbs belts and begs Shields for a rematch

CLARESSA SHIELDS CONFRONTS SAVANNAH MARSHALL AFTER UNDISPUTED WIN VS. CREWS-DEZURN | FULL POST-FIGHT

By Ed Emeanua

Savannah Marshall lost for the first time since turning pro inside a ring to Claressa Shields last October in her maiden bid to ringfence all four major belts in a division.

She has only just yanked same absolute super-middleweight belts from Franchon Crews-Dezurn with a majority decision win at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday and now wants a rematch with shields.

But will Shields who has moved on to a higher ranking grant her wish for a rematch?

Marshall’s outing last weekend was her first since losing to Shields last year, the defeat forcing her to go down to 12-1, 10 KOs.

The buff and durable Crews-Dezurn gave out an exceptionally contrasting stellar test to Shields’ thrilling artistry and Marshall, now 13-1, 10 KOs better, was strained sporadically during the encounter.

All the same, Marshall duly carried the day by differences of 99-92 and 97-93 on the scorecards, with a third judge turning in an absolutely baffling 95-95 decision.

But, is that enough to honestly contend that Marshall is truly ready for what Shields will bring to one more brawl between them?

Soon after the fight, Marshall was almost immediately drawn to Shields’ presence at ringside, who she wishes to fight in again in the higher weight class she has just annexed.

It was expected that should Marshall defeat Crews-Dezurn, the clear bout to make would be a Marshall versus Shields 2. The first fight was a riveting faceoff and a follow-up is an easy sell. While Shields would relish the opportunity to crowned a three-weight incontestable queen, Marshall would have the chance to achieve her revenge.

CLARESSA SHIELDS VS FRANCHON CREWS FULL FIGHT

Also, Marshall versus Shields 1 was a matchup that was 10 years in the making. Marshall is the sole fighter to have handed the fabled American a loss, in a 2012 amateur competition, and the “G.W.O.A.T” had vowed retribution ever since. On fight night, Shields’ nimble hands and skill eclipsed Marshall’s hard-hitting attack and the American left the ring with the British star’s WBO middleweight belt and recognition as undisputed champion.

“I think the tactics were wrong. I definitely fought Claressa’s fight and I didn’t think she’d be as tough as she was. She was a lot tougher than I expected,” said Marshall about her first fight with Shields.

“I believe that I can outbox Claressa, but I personally don’t think she’ll give me the fight. When you’re in there, there’s only you and the opponent who know, and she knows that was a hard fight.

“She knows I hurt her, she knows she was pushed all the way, and I don’t think she’ll want to go through that again. We were due to have a rematch straight away and she majorly priced herself out of the fight.

“No, I don’t think she’ll give me it. Fair play if she does, but I don’t think she will. Like I said, she could have had the rematch straight after and the vibes I was getting was that she wasn’t interested.”

Now that Marshall has left the ring with a treasure trove of super middleweight hardware last Saturday, will Shields be able to resist the challenge?

Fowler wins Rocket Mortgage Classic payout

First tournament victory since 2019, cashes big winner’s check

Rickie Fowler
(Getty Images)

It’s officially the summer of Rickie Fowler, Dan Treacy writes for the Sporting News.

Just two weeks after positioning himself as a surprise contender at the U.S. Open, Fowler claimed his first PGA Tour victory since 2019 by winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Fowler beat out Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a playoff, the third time that Fowler has won a PGA Tour event in a playoff.

The win is incredibly meaningful to Fowler’s career, which took a downturn after so much early success. The 34-year-old has made adjustments, found a new putter, and is on the rise yet again.

Sunday’s victory also marks a well-earned payday for Fowler. Here’s what you need to know about Fowler’s payout and the full purse for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Rocket Mortgage Classic payout

The total purse for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic is $8.8 million. Fowler comes away with $1.584 million, or 18 percent of the purse, for his win.

The purse was slightly increased from 2022’s total of $8.4 million. Tony Finau earned $1.512 million for his victory last year.

The top 65 finishers at the Rocket Mortgage Classic receive a portion of the $8.8 million purse. $959,000 is allotted for the second-place finisher, while the third-place finisher receives $607,200. Because Hadwin and Morikawa finished tied for the second, they will both receive the average of the two figures.

The top 21 finishers all receive at least $100,000, while the top 34 finishers all receive at least $50,000.

Rickie Fowler PGA Tour wins

Fowler’s Rocket Mortgage Classic win his his sixth PGA Tour victory and first in more than four years. It certainly hasn’t always come easily for Fowler: Three of his six wins have required a playoff, including each of his first two.

Fowler made a run at his first major win at the 2023 U.S. Open, but a Round 4 collapse resulted in a tied-for-fifth finish. Alongside Xander Schauffele, Fowler set a U.S. Open record in Round 1, shooting an eight-under 62.

Here’s a complete breakdown of Fowler’s PGA Tour wins:

Year Event To par
2012 Wells Fargo Championship -14
2015 The Players Championship -12
2015 Deutsche Bank Championship -15
2017 The Honda Classic -12
2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open -17
2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic -24

Iwobi’s message to a departing ‘Legend’

One-word Instagram support to ‘quality’ Andros Townsend who has left Everton

Everton Training Session

By Ed Emeanua

Alex Iwobi and Andros Townsend clearly were friends upon Townsend’s capture by Everton, regardless of commencing their playing roles with rival sides, now Iwobi has demonstrated his backing to his friend after Everton declined to renew his contract.

Townsend took to Instagram to address his departure, tweeting: ‘So my time at Everton has come to an end. Although I am gutted I wasn’t able to recover from my injury in time to help out last season, I will always remember and cherish these moments in particular from my 1st season.’

Amidst a plethora of tweets of support from supporters, Iwobi was swift to respond with ‘Legend!’ in his comments. Townsend in-turn replied with a kind of off the wall tweet of ‘Iwobinho’.

Townsend was at Tottenham for 16 years before moving to Newcastle United, while Iwobi played for Arsenal for the same amount of time up until 2019. Everton failed to extend Townsend’s contract at Goodison Park with the end of his current deal this week, making the winger a free agent.

Townsend teamed-up with the Toffees as a free agent in the summer of 2021, going on to score five times in 23 outings, with former manager Rafa Benitez praising his quality and claiming that he works ‘very’ hard’.

However, Townsend endured a cruciate ligament injury in March 2022 and was yet to return for the Toffees before he was let go.

Everton News claims that Andros Townsend is a consistent hard worker during his stint at Everton and demonstrated marks of caliber, counting his Premier League Goal of the Month against Burnley, his first strike in Everton’s colors.

The Everton outlet nonetheless contended that: “the 31-year-old was ‘never good enough for the Toffees and shouldn’t really have been signed by Rafa Benitez in the first place.

“While Everton fans will be thankful for his short spell, the club are doing the correct thing in releasing the ‘dead wood’ and hopefully bringing in some more quality”.

Strickland rants against Adesanya again!

Calls out ‘The Last Stylebender’ again after round two TKO win

Adesanya does not currently have a fight booked but will likely fight the winner of Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis next week

By Ed Emeanua

Moments after his second-round TKO win over Abusupiyan Magomedov on Saturday, Sean Strickland renditioned an expletive laced rant as he made his case for a UFC middleweight title shot against Israel Adesanya.

The win heralded Strickland’s fourteenth following signing up with the company in 2014, and the notoriously unreserved pug exhorted his deserving of a shot at the title already.

In his fourth outing in a headlining fixture, Strickland boasted a notable encounter familiarity advantage over the inexperienced Magomedov, nonetheless, he was forced on the back pedal by the foe during the initial round of the encounter.

Magomedov gained the upper hand in the beginning five minutes by bespattering Strickland with a endless cascade of leg kicks as well as even nailing down a takedown.

Strickland took hold of the impetus in the second round all the same, and deluged the German middleweight before plopping and finishing Magomedov to close out his first UFC stoppage since 2020.

Victory will likely move 32-year-old to within touching distance of the middleweight top five

‘F***, man. It needs to happen, you guys,’ Strickland told reporters at the post-fight press conference.

‘We know Izzy is on f****** repeat, dude. They try to bring Abus (in). This is what the UFC said, “Man, the middleweight division is stagnant. Let’s get Abus in here. He might beat Sean”.

And I’m like, “Yeah right, mother f*****. Wait until you see what happens”. Every time they’ve tried to bring new blood, (like) the Frenchie I fought before, I sent him home.

‘This guy, I sent him back. Every time they try to bring new blood in, I send them back. Give me the f****** title. I earned it.’

Adesanya is presently without a fight lined up following regaining his middleweight championship by Knocking out classical nemesis Alex Pereira at UFC 287 in April.

The most likely option for the ‘Last Style Bender’s’ next contender for his belt is likely to be the victor of Robert Whittaker versus Dricus Du Plessis on Saturday.

However, if the massive choice Whittaker triumphs at UFC 290, the erstwhile titleholder will clash with Adesanya inside the Octagon for a third fight having lost their past two faceoffs, feeding fuel to Strickland’s logic over the dearth of invigorating force in the division.

PSG spends €300 million to crush Madrid

PSG enters a new era with their ultra modern training arena

PSG spend 300 million to crush Madrid

After a wait that lasted several years, PSG will finally settle in its new training center in Poissy. A huge leap forward for the capital club, which will have facilities never seen before for a football club.

This time it’s the right one, when Kylian Mbappé and his PSG teammates go back to training on July 10, they will no longer go to Camp des Loges, but to the new training center in Poissy. After a long wait, both because the file took a long time to set up, but also because the site was not easy, Paris Saint-Germain will finally have a tool to match the ambitions displayed by Qatar.

This jewel, which is not completely finished, will have cost 300 million euros to the club of the capital, but it is obvious, it allows Paris to enter a new era. While the leaders of PSG are negotiating an agreement for the naming of this training center, we are talking about an amount greater than the 20 million euros currently affected with Ooredoo, the former mayor of Poissy is already in ecstasy.

End clap at the Camp des Loges

/media/247196/camp-des-loges-1.jpg

July 8, 1970-June 2, 2023… 19,302 days later (i.e. 52 years, 10 months and 5 days), the professional section of Paris Saint-Germain bows out in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, before the start of the school year in Poissy next season.
History will remember that Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Marquinhos and their teammates trained one last time at the Camp des Loges training center this Friday, June 2, 2023, on the eve of the reception of Clermont for the 38th day of the League. 1, which will see them lift the 11th champion trophy in club history, a record in France.
July 28, 1970 was a historic date in the history of Paris Saint-Germain Football Club. All the Parisian leaders were present for the first training of the players on the lawns of the Camp des Loges in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The media were also present in large numbers for this great first and at its end, the red and blue leader Guy Crescent declared with enthusiasm: “From now on, you belong to a family. The Paris Football Club and the Stade Sangermanois, it’s over. Now we are Paris Saint-Germain! »
The Camp des Loges has therefore been the training center of the Rouge et Bleu since the creation of the club. Originally, the land was occupied by a military base which hosted the regional engineering directorate in Île-de-France. The Stade Sangermanois, then Paris Saint-Germain in 1970, are the tenants of this omnisport complex. Until 1974 and the rise to the first division, the Rouge et Bleu played their league matches at the Stade Georges Lefèvre, named in memory of a former Saint-Germain player who died in combat during the Second World War.
The Camp des Loges also hosted the Training Center, inaugurated on November 4, 1975, and the home meetings of the reserve team and the youth sections of PSG.
On November 4, 2008, after ten months of work, a new ultra-modern building located 400 meters from the former training center opened its doors.
On September 12, 2013, following the signing of a sponsorship contract, the training center was renamed “Ooredoo Training Center”.
Hundreds of players will therefore have walked the lawns of Camp des Loges since 1970: 492 have worn the Parisian colors to date in an official match with the first team, not to mention all the young people who came to train with the professional team.
A page in the history of the club turns in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which will host the women’s section for the next six months.
