Comments on the home win against Union Berlin
By Werder Bremen
The three points are in the bag. In their 1-0 win against 1. FC Union Berlin, the Green-Whites had to build a long attack and then defend passionately in the closing stages. WERDER.DE summarizes the comments from head coach Horst Steffen and the other players.
Head coach Horst Steffen: “The effort was top-notch, and the game plan was also top-notch in some respects. We were one goal better, even though Union repeatedly threatened and we had to defend many crosses and set pieces. The team accepted the expected game and deserved the three points accordingly.”
Captain Marco Friedl: “It was an unpleasant, tough game. I think the first half was extremely boring to watch, but it got better in the second half when we played them well. When Union was on the attack, we scored. We defended extremely well over the 90 minutes. The win is fortunate, but certainly not entirely undeserved.” Winning goal scorer
Marco Grüll: “We prepared well for the game. We expected them to play a lot of long balls, and we held up well. My goal felt like it was offside. So far, it’s one of my better goals, but more importantly, we won the game.”
Boniface, starting debutant: “I felt good; for me, it was the first time in a long time that I’d started from the beginning. It was a good game; we knew our opponents were very strong defensively. This win will do us good. The atmosphere was fantastic; that’s exactly what we need from the fans to give our all for them.”
Amos Pieper: “It’s good to know that we can be this solid, which we don’t manage every week. Defensively, everyone has been particularly good. Everyone worked hard and gave it their all to win the game. Overall, it was a bit lackluster, but Grüllo’s goal made up for it.”
Head of Professional Football Peter Niemeyer: “It was the tough and difficult game we expected. We accepted the challenge and fought for every inch. From my perspective, we played a good, structured game in which we had solutions going forward, with Boni repeatedly keeping possession of the ball well.”
