The much awaited Gombe Inter-Primary Schools AthIetics Championship got off to a glowing start inside the main bowl of Pantami Stadium with over 37 schools in attendance.
The Games commenced with the girls 100m heats which stretched to Seven (7), but the boys 100m heats was intentionally delayed to make way for the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony of the championship itself was mind blowing, and took a very interesting dimension as a total of 1,017 pupils took part in the March pass, while the Permanent Secretary of the Gombe State Ministry of sports, Mohammed Kolo Bajoga, took the salute.
There was enough excitement and entertainment as pupils and their joyful parents took to dancing to music of local ensembles.
Expectedly, other dignitaries that also graced the opening ceremony include Zainab Adamu, Sports Commission director, Abubakar Baba Abdullahi, Local Education Scribe, among others.
Pantami Stadium was so jampacked to such an extent that the covered stand could not contain the spectators.
Sunday’s (Day 2) Competition would be more exciting as Competitions would start in earnest with full participation in the following events namely, 50 meters Egg and sack races for Boys. 200m boys and girls semi-finals, 50m bottle race for girls, and the boys 400m bicycle race.
Five schools got shortlisted for being the best in the March pass and the eventual winner would be announced by the organizing Committee in due time.
The organizer of the Competition Hon. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe expressed gratitude to parents for releasing their wards to participate in the 4-day AthIetics competitions, and assured all presents of his willingness to be part of the competition until Gombe State produces a world 100m champion like Tobi Amusan (12:12secs) and others.
With the commencement of the AthIetics competitions, the media training would begin as planned on Tuesday July 11th.
