Dumps the idea of the Winter signing of Karim Benzema
- Benzema has been linked with a return to Europe from Saudi Arabia this month
- Chelsea open to signing new striker before the January window shuts
- Real Madrid links played down by Benzema’s brother
According to a report, Chelsea has opted against pursuing a move for Al Ittihad striker Karim Benzema, Tom Gott reports for 90min.
The Blues are open to a move for a new forward this month ahead of making a big splash in the summer when Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is expected to be a top target.
When reports from Saudi Arabia emerged suggesting Benzema could be on the hunt for a return to Europe, Chelsea was quickly touted as a potential suitor, with many fans drooling over the prospect of a six-month loan for the 36-year-old.
However, according to The Athletic, Chelsea have ruled out a move for Benzema before the January transfer window shuts.
Blues officials are keen to avoid expensive moves for older players and will instead focus on recruiting young, emerging talents.
90min confirmed earlier this month that a move away from Saudi Arabia for Benzema was always viewed as unlikely this month, with league officials incredibly reluctant to part ways with one of the biggest names in their project after just six months.
Benzema has since done his best to silence the speculation, while his brother publicly rubbished reports of a possible return to Real Madrid for the veteran forward.
With the transfer window set to close on Thursday, Chelsea are running out of time to make significant changes in the striker department.
The Blues will listen to offers for striker Armando Broja, but a hefty price tag placed on the Albania international could limit his options before the end of the month.
In the summer, Chelsea hopes to have more money available and will seek to end their goalscoring woes. Long-term target Osimhen, whose contract contains a release clause worth over £100m, is expected to be in their sights.
