Eagles’ ultra-defensive system undo Elephants

Jean-Louis Gasset: ‘Nigeria opted for a deep defensive approach’

On Thursday, Cote d’Ivoire endured a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Nigeria in their second Group A fixture of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

According to coach Jean-Louis Gasset, the Elephants encountered an ultra-defensive system implemented by the Nigerians.

“It was a very physical match; Nigeria chose to play very low with a five-person defense to exploit counterattacks with their star striker. It was a tightly contested match,” he remarked.

Additionally, he criticized his players for their inability to respond to the physical challenge imposed by José Peseiro’s team. “We didn’t give the impression of being able to compete physically,” noted the French technician.

Despite this lackluster performance, Gasset maintains confidence in his players, anticipating improvement.

“We knew that we had a young team in terms of experience but not in terms of quality. I have confidence in this group; I know that it is young and tender; it simply requires psychological work,” stated the coach.

The upcoming third match against Equatorial Guinea next Monday holds decisive importance.

Gasset hopes to regain Sébastien Haller and Simon Adingra, two key players who have been notably absent from his team since the start of the competition.

“We are going to prepare for a win. I hope our two injured players can play at least part of the match,” he concluded.

We used a strategy that worked-Jose Peseiro

‘I told my players not to savor the victory.’

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro says they used a strategy that worked for them in their hard-fought 1-0 win over TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire hosts on Thursday evening.

The Portuguese technician is delighted to have implemented “a strategy that worked” against the hosts, who had a highly vocal crowd backing at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe.

However, he acknowledges having noted some improvement areas during this match won thanks to a penalty caused by Victor Osimhen and converted by William Troost-Ekong in the 55th minute.

“For the next match, we have to control the game, try to be less timid, and not give possession to the opponent,” he said.

For José Peseiro, this victory does not suddenly make Nigeria one of the competition’s favorites.

“I told my players not to savor the victory. We have four days left before the next match. From day one, I told them: ‘You must win the AFCON,'” he said.

Nigeria faces Guinea-Bissau on Monday, 22 January, at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan for their third and final round of Group A matches at 17h00 GMT.

Nigeria silence hosts Cote d’Ivoire

Shakes up Group A

Nigeria landed a significant blow in the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON knockout qualification race by defeating hosts Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in Thursday’s titanic Group A clash.

Before a packed Stade Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, the two African heavyweights served up a pulsating contest.

The Ivorian fans were silenced when William Troost-Ekong converted a 54th-minute penalty after Victor Osimhen was fouled.

Despite relentless roars of support, the Elephants could not find an equalizer as the Super Eagles held on for a famous victory.

Nigeria managed the closing stages expertly to condemn the stunned Elephants to their first defeat.

The Super Eagles stood tall amid intense Ivorian pressure to land a psychological blow on one of Africa’s proudest footballing nations.

The 1-0 triumph lifts Nigeria level on four points with surprise package Equatorial Guinea at the Group A summit.

Cote d’Ivoire remains third on three points and likely needs to beat Equatorial Guinea to reach the knockouts.

By subduing the hosts in their imposing fortress, Nigeria has emphatically revived their AFCON campaign.

The Super Eagles stood tall amid intense Ivorian pressure to land a psychological blow on one of Africa’s proudest footballing nations.

Having flexed their muscles by quietening the Abidjan crowd, Peseiro’s men have warned TotalEnergies AFCON 2023 rivals.

Below are the match facts

  • Côte d’Ivoire is the second host country to lose in the group stage of a home Africa Cup of Nations in the 21st century, following Equatorial Guinea’s 1-0 defeat to Zambia in 2012.

  • Nigeria have scored at least one goal in 13 of their 14 Africa Cup of Nations group games over the last five editions in which they have participated, only failing to beat Madagascar in 2019 (2-0 defeat). At the same time, the Super Eagles have kept 8 clean sheets over this period.

  • 6 goals were scored on average in the games between Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, with 11 goals scored in seven matches. This is the co-lowest ratio in a match played at least as often in the competition (1.6 – 11 goals in 7 games also for Egypt-Morocco).

  • Côte d’Ivoire has conceded a penalty goal in the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2015 and a Dieumerci Mbokani strike for DR Congo. At each of the previous two editions (2019 and 2021), the Elephants conceded a penalty before being saved by their woodworks, each time against Algeria.

  • Goalscorer in the opening game of the Africa Cup of Nations, Seko Fofana attempted five shots today against Nigeria, no Côte d’Ivoire player has attempted more in a single match in the competition since Opta began analysing this data (2010).

  • Today, Victor Osimhen played 21 duels against Côte d’Ivoire, the highest tally of this Africa Cup of Nations 2023. This is the third-highest tally for a Nigeria player at an AFCON since Opta began analyzing this data, behind Emmanuel Emenike (25 in 2013) and Paul Onuachu (23 in 2019).

Nigeria’s forward, Victor Osimhen, emerged as the standout player in the thrilling encounter against hosts Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday night, securing a 1-0 victory for the Super Eagles.

Named Man of the Match, Osimhen shared his elation during a post-match press conference, emphasizing the significance of overcoming the formidable host nation.

Following a lackluster 1-1 draw in their opening match against Equatorial Guinea in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023, Nigeria exhibited resilience and determination, clinching a crucial win against Cote d’Ivoire, who were hosting the tournament.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 55th minute when Victor Osimhen, donned in green and white, earned a penalty, expertly converted by William Troost-Ekong to secure the lead.

In the post-match press conference, Napoli’s prolific striker, Victor Osimhen, openly expressed his joy: “It’s a beautiful victory; we knew we would face a strong Ivory Coast team.”

Acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge posed by Cote d’Ivoire, Osimhen added, “This match was a significant test for us, and we are thrilled to have overcome it.”

Assuring a consistent approach in upcoming matches, Osimhen emphasized adopting the same mentality displayed against the Elephants.

“In the first match, we had numerous chances we didn’t capitalize on. Today wasn’t different; we maintained the same mentality and hoped this victory would bring joy to everyone. We will carry this mindset into the remainder of the competition,” he pledged.

Looking ahead, the Nigerian team shifts their focus to the upcoming third match against Guinea-Bissau scheduled for Monday at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan.

Osimhen emphasized not underestimating their opponent, stating, “We aim for a strong performance against Guinea-Bissau. They will undoubtedly approach the game with determination, and we won’t underestimate any team, considering what they’ve done to qualify.”

Equatorial Guinea striker Emilio Nsue has set his sights on winning the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations golden boot after his hat-trick sunk Guinea-Bissau 4-2 on Thursday.

The 34-year-old grabbed the first treble of the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire, becoming the first player to score three since Morocco’s Soufiane Alloudi in 2008.

Nsue was named man of the match for his ruthless display leading the line for the Nzalang Nacional in the Group A encounter.

“I feel perfect, and I’m thrilled to be back playing at my third AFCON,” said Nsue, who plies his trade with Spanish fourth-tier CF Intercity.

“Scoring three goals has given me a lot of confidence, and I hope I can keep scoring and even be the top scorer in this competition.”

After Equatorial Guinea’s second triumph in two games, the veteran striker was keen to share the plaudits with his teammates.

“I’m very proud of this performance by the team,” added Nsue. “It was a perfect match, especially in the second half, although we still need to improve in certain areas.”

Nsue will have to maintain his ruthless form in front of goal to claim the Golden Boot, with the likes of Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen also eyeing the accolade.

But with three goals already to his name, the rejuvenated target man has given himself every chance of finishing AFCON 2023 as the top marksman.

Nigeria U-20 girls intensify Abuja training

Colombia 2024: Falconets target early goals to fly over Burundi to FIFA World Cup

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Nigeria’s U-20 girls have intensified their training sessions in Abuja ahead of Saturday’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup final qualifying run-out against their counterparts from Burundi at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

Head Coach Chris Danjuma, who also led the team to the quarter-finals at the last edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, is confident the Falconets will build on their 1-0 first-leg victory in Dar es Salaam last Sunday to send the Burundians packing.

“The first leg encounter was tough, but we should have taken our chances. We created several opportunities but let the Burundians off, and we seriously must guard against such laxity on Saturday. We must take our chances early and make the match enjoyable for our fans.

“Of course, I am already looking forward to another World Cup with the team, but we must put first things first. The challenge is to get Burundi out of the way on Saturday and earn the ticket.”

Forward Janet Akekoromowei netted the only goal of the first leg encounter from the penalty spot in added time of the first half after a foul that earned Burundian defender Ariella Umuarerwa the red card. The Falconets had lost an earlier penalty kick through Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Tunisian official Asma Chouchane as referee for Thursday’s clash, with her compatriots Houda Afine, Nesrine Ouertatani, and Emna Ajbouni involved as assistant 1, assistant 2, and fourth official, respectively.

Christine Ziga from Ghana will be the commissioner, while Fadouma Dia from Senegal will be the referee assessor.

This year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals will be staged in Colombia from 31st August – to 22nd September.

Paseiro questions Sadiq’s Nigeria loyalty

Nigeria’s coach questions why Sadiq can play for Real Sociedad despite missing the Africa Cup with an injury

AP reports that Nigeria coach José Peseiro is “confused” about why Umar Sadiq can play for the Spanish team Real Sociedad despite an injury ruling the forward out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

AP Sports Writer (AP) — Nigeria coach José Peseiro says he is “confused” about why Umar Sadiq can play for Spanish team Real Sociedad despite an injury ruling the forward out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 26-year-old Sadiq has been included in Sociedad’s squad for its Copa del Rey game at Osasuna on Wednesday when Peseiro said he thought the player’s injury would prevent him from playing for Nigeria at the Africa Cup.

Nigeria plays host nation Ivory Coast on Thursday when the pressure is on Peseiro’s “Super Eagles” following a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their opening game. Ivory Coast started with a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.

“I’m also confused,” Peseiro said when asked about Sadiq on Wednesday. “What I can say is I saw the report from the medical test that he’s injured and cannot recover in 15 days, at least, or more time … The report went to the club, and the club said he must come (back) to recover.”

Peseiro said Sadiq wanted to stay with the Nigeria squad but that he and his coaching staff decided to replace him before Jan. 3, the final day to submit the squad lists for the tournament.

“I am happy that he recovered well. I am sad he’s not here to help us,” Peseiro said.

The Portuguese coach has faced criticism after Nigeria, considered one of the tournament favorites, failed to start with a win. At the same time, his team has conceded at least a goal in its last six games, including the 2-0 loss to Guinea in the competition warm-up game.

Star forward Victor Osimhen scored but also missed several good chances in the team’s tournament opener, which Nigeria dominated without winning. The “Super Eagles” had 19 shots at goal compared to seven from Equatorial Guinea.

“If you create the same opportunities, you’re going to score,” Peseiro said Wednesday. “Like I said the last time: Sometimes, the god gives; sometimes, the god takes. Sometimes, the god takes, and sometimes, the god gives. It’s the right time for god to give (to) us.”

Lennox Lewis’ opinion on Joshua v. Ngannou

The boxing legend has had his say on AJ fighting Ngannou next, and he’s not that impressed with the fight

Highlights

  • Lennox Lewis believes that the Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou fight will not add credibility to AJ’s resume.
  • Lewis has also questioned the value of Joshua beating someone in only his second heavyweight fight, stating that a loss would be a disaster.
  • Lewis is, however, looking forward to welcoming Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk to the “Undisputed Club” and believes Fury has the advantage.

Boxing legend Lennox Lewis has weighed in on the upcoming heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, suggesting that the bout will add ‘zero credibility’ to AJ’s resume, Zac Jones reports for Give Me Sport.

In a press conference this past Monday in London, England, Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou came face-to-face for the first time to officially confirm their blockbuster bout set for the 8th of March 2024 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This huge fight is set to take place just weeks after Tyson Fury takes on Oleksandr Usyk in another massive heavyweight clash on the 17th of February. It was revealed during the Joshua vs. Ngannou press conference that the winners of these two bouts would face each other later this year to crown the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Doubts over Francis Ngannou’s belonging at the top table

He’s only had one boxing fight so far, so questions have been raised

While Fury, Usyk, and Joshua have all earned their reputations as the best boxers currently in the heavyweight division, many fans have questioned the credibility of Ngannou being in the mix, having only ever competed in one boxing match.

After transitioning from the UFC, Ngannou impressed in his debut fight against Fury late last year but ultimately lost the bout via split decision. But now, the Cameroonian fighter, who currently has a 0-1 record, could theoretically be crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion after three career fights.

Lennox Lewis also raises questions about the fight

Following the announcement of Joshua vs Ngannou, Lennox Lewis, a former undisputed heavyweight champion in his own right, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the fight.

“IMO, this fight adds ZERO credibility to AJ’s resume. He’s SUPPOSED to win this fight, and when he does, what does he gain or learn by beating someone in his second HW fight? If he loses, then it’s an absolute disaster. The same stood for Fury, and it almost cost him everything.”

Lewis also shared his thoughts on Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk potentially joining him in the ‘undisputed club,’ and offered a prediction for the upcoming fight.

“For the record, I’m looking forward to welcoming Fury or Usyk to the Undisputed club. I am glad they have decided to chase history. It should be a great fight. A good big un’ beats an excellent little un’… Advantage Fury.”

Following Lewis’ social media outburst regarding AJ vs Ngannou, which has caused quite a stir among boxing fans, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, sarcastically responded to his remarks, stating: “Listen in to yesterday… the winner fights the winner of Fury v Usyk for Undisputed and when AJ joins your club I know you will be delighted for him.”

As IOS reports, last year’s beaten finalist struggled to get going in front of a rowdy crowd on Margaret Court Arena before finally getting over the line 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2, 7year’s4) after a grueling 3 hours and 36 minutes.

It set him up with a clash for a place in the fourth round with France’s Luca Van Assche.

“The adrenaline and the rush I got out of this match tonight was insane,” said the seventh seed, who lost to Novak Djokovic in laFrance’s final.

‘Extremely” happy’

“You live for these kinds of matches; the intensity was there “one day. We were both able to peak in our tennis at spearmint during the game.

“The “act that I can sleep tonight and know I gave it all makes me extremely happy right now.”

The 47th-ranked Thompson broke the Greek star in the s”seventh game of the opening set and did not relinquish his advantage to assume the early upper hand.”

Neither player dropped serve in a tense second set that went to a pulsating tie-break. Tsitsipas blew three set points before finally closing out the set.

It fired up his confidence, and he was a different player in the third set, breaking Thompson twice to race 4-0 clear and clinically closing it out.

He quickly took control of the fourth set, but his nerve failed when serving at 5-4, squandering two match points to let Thompson back in.

With the crowd roaring them on, Tsitsipas saved four set points in an epic 12th game that lasted more than 13 minutes to take it to another tie-breaker, where his serve finally clicked, and he lived to fight another day.
