Amanda Serrano and Nina Meinke were in the final face-to-face before their fight next Saturday. San Juan, Puerto Rico, has become a boxing city this week and will have a great battle in which the home fighter will defend her World Boxing Association (WBA) belt against the German at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, Jesús Milano reports for WBA.

The press conference was held in a public place and was well attended by fans and the press, whose attention was focused on this weekend’s event.

Serrano emphasized her pride in returning home and doing so in a spectacular way. The evening will be full of figures such as Jake Paul, the debutant Javon Walton, and the stellar figure Serrano, who had nearly three years without fighting at home.

It is worth mentioning that this will be the second consecutive time that Serrano fights in 12 rounds of 3 minutes. She will do it against the Europeans, who made excellent preparations in the Caribbean and assured that she is ready to take on this great challenge.

Aurelio de Laurentiis on Victor Osimhen’s future: “You can’t stop them”

Napoli CEO Aurelio de Laurentiis has stated that there are times when he can’t stop players from leaving, when asked about Serie A champion Victor Osimhen’s future, Kaustubh Pandey reports for Get Football News Italy.

The Nigerian has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe and it seems likely that he would depart in the summer. Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the striker and London duo Chelsea and Arsenal have also drawn links with the ex-Lille man, whose future remains unresolved.

Osimhen does have a release clause in his deal and he has admitted that he has dreams of playing in the Premier League already.

Napoli CEO Aurelio de Laurentiis spoke to Financial Times recently and he spoke about Osimhen’s future. He referred to Osimhen as a ‘son’, while also stating that he can’t stop players from leaving sometimes.

“He’s a great player but we know: Naples is a fantastic place, there are some players who fell in love and stayed there like Hamsik for 11 years. Or like others for eight years. And there are others who they are attracted by Real Madrid, PSG, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea. So you can’t stop them, especially when they have a release clause with which they can be bought.”

He further stated: “He has a release clause. It’s a very high figure. Will he leave? We’ll see. Money is Napoli’s last problem. We have always made excellent signings as we have done in the past. We will also in the future. When you see a player leave it’s like a son leaving and you’re happy even if this son has fantastic success everywhere.”

Osimhen recently scored a hat-trick against Sassuolo in the Serie A and has now scored five times in three games in all competitions under new manager Francesco Calzona.

Osimhen loves ‘The Blues’-Mikel Obi

Says, “I’m still Osimhen’s agent, trying to get him to Chelsea! I’ve got 20 per cent of that deal, so I hope it works out!”

Former Blues player Mikel John Obi claims that Victor Osimhen “loves” Premier League giants Chelsea and wants to sign this summer, Ahad Shaukat reports for Caughtoffside.

Given that he has declared he would leave Napoli at the end of the season, the Nigerian attacker is top of the Blues’ priority list for a summer signing.

Although Osimhen’s contract contains a £113 million release clause and Paris Saint-Germain are predicted to be fierce rivals of Chelsea, Mikel is trying to persuade the player that the Blues are the superior choice.

“I think there is genuine interest between both,” Mikel said at the Web Summit Qatar as quoted by The Standard. “I think he loves the club, he wants to come to the club.

“Obviously, he wants to follow my footsteps as a Nigerian player who has played for Chelsea – Victor Moses, Celestine Babayaro, not a lot of us.”

Mikel joked: “I’m still Osimhen’s agent, trying to get him to Chelsea! I’ve got 20 per cent of that deal, so I hope it works out!”

“But he also has a lot of interest. Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United. I’m still pushing, sending him messages, trying to make sure he doesn’t expect to much, narrow you’re mind on one club – the Blues. I am pushing him, I hope he comes to the club.”

During his four seasons in Naples, Osimhen has scored 72 goals in 122 games for the team, solidifying his status as one of Europe’s top attackers.

The Nigerian striker is being chased by some of the biggest clubs in the world. Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and PSG have all shown interest in signing him.

Recent rumours have linked Osimhen to a move to French champions PSG, who are likely to lose Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid in the summer.

To nominate fair play moments for 2024

According to World Athletics, on the eve of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 – the first global championships of the year – the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP), in partnership with World Athletics, is inviting fans across the world to nominate moments that epitomise fair play with a view to recognising one standout athlete or moment at the World Athletics Awards later this year.

As was the case last year, the nominations period includes all World Athletics Series (WAS) events and Continental Tour events throughout the course of the year, as well as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This will allow for more moments to be included from different events all across the world, and enriches the pool of eligible athletes and potential nominations.

Following the final Continental Tour event of the year in September, a jury will be empanelled to review the nominations and judge on a shortlist of five fair play moments in athletics from 2024.

Fans will then be asked to cast their votes through the World Athletics social media channels for the shortlisted moment that they feel best exemplifies fair play. These votes will be combined with the votes from the jury to determine three finalists for the Fair Play Award. The winner will be revealed at the World Athletics Awards in Monaco later in the year.

To nominate an athlete or moment for the Fair Play Award, please email fairplayaward@worldathletics.org.

Letesenbet Gidey was the recipient of last year’s award. After securing silver in the women’s 10,000m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Gidey went back to comfort Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan after Hassan’s dramatic fall on the home straight.

The CIFP was established 60 years ago to promote the principles of fair play in sport: fair competition, respect, friendship, team spirit, equality and sport without doping. It honours those who respect the written and unwritten rules of sport, which include integrity, solidarity, tolerance, care, excellence and joy, and who set an example for others, on and off the field. The CIFP’s first collaboration with World Athletics dates back to the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris. Eleven awards have been handed out since then.

Chelsea’s ‘Plan B’ if Osimhen capture fails

Could try and sign striker with more goals than Erling Haaland if Victor Osimhen bid fails

Chelsea’s top target for the summer is Victor Osimhen, but if their bid to sign him fails, the Blues could turn to Viktor Gyokeres, Shamanth Jayaram reports for TBR.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have problems in multiple areas of their pitch, but the biggest one is arguably up front. They are struggling to score goals, and Osimhen would change that. Gyokeres, who is having a fine season in Portugal, would be a solid option too for Chelsea.

Chelsea could sign Viktor Gyokeres if Victor Osimhen bid fails

Almost every top club in Europe would love to sign Victor Osimhen this summer, and that includes Chelsea.

Nicolas Jackson has shown flashes of his quality up front, while Christopher Nkunku has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch due to injuries.

A new striker is a necessity in the summer, and Osimhen, who is one of the best forwards in the world right now, is on top of their shortlist.

However, with so many other clubs keen to sign the Napoli star, it could prove to be difficult for Chelsea. That’s why they have alternatives, and Viktor Gyokeres is one of them.

Dean Jones has claimed in his report on GiveMeSport that Chelsea view the Sporting Lisbon striker as a ‘great profile fit’ for their squad if their move to sign Osimhen fails.

The Swede, whose release clause is set at £86 million, would be cheaper than Osimhen too – the Nigerian will cost £113 million (Daily Mail).

Gyokeres is outscoring Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah

Viktor Gyokeres was in the Championship at Coventry City last season, and he was very good there. But, no Premier League side took a chance on him.

Sporting Lisbon did, and they are now reaping the rewards.

Gyokeres has scored 31 goals and provided 11 assists for the Portuguese side this season. That is an incredible return, especially when you compare it to the best goalscorers in England.

Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland has scored 27 goals and provided six assists, while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has managed 19 goals and 10 assists.

Gyokeres has the potential to become a real star, and if Chelsea can’t get Osimhen, the Swede would be a solid alternative.

Enyimba romps into top spot

Reaps fruits of free-scoring match week

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title-holders Enyimba climbed to the top of the standings following a 4-0 thrashing of Gombe United at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba on Thursday, George Akpayen reports for NPFL.

In a matchday that produced 25 goals, the People’s Elephant dismissed their opponents despite having 21 goal attempts, including 12 on target.

Chijioke Mbaoma helped himself to a brace of goals within 60 minutes before Uche Collins came off the bench to score, and Imo Obot netted the fourth at the death to seal a big win for the champions.

Finidi George’s men were on the front foot from kickoff but failed to breach Gombe United’s defense. The visiting side, however, had the first real chance when Ahmed Jimoh was left with goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo to beat but aimed his attempt over the post on 17 minutes.

On the 28th-minute mark, Mbaoma should have put Enyimba in front but failed to get enough purchase on a cross, allowing Gombe United goalkeeper Itodo Akor to gather quickly.

Two minutes later, Mbaoma was once again guilty of failing to score. He was played through on goal for a one-on-one with Akor, who spread himself to keep out the striker’s effort at point-blank range.

Five minutes before the break, it was Chidiebere Nnachi’s turn to miss. He evaded his marker in the box and fired his shot over.

On 45 minutes, Mbaoma converted from the spot to put Enyimba in the lead after Nicholas Jonathan brought him down in Gombe United’s box.

Finidi’s men continued the second 45 with the same attitude. Eleven minutes into the restart, a defensive error gifted Nnachi the ball one-on-one with Akor, who fouled him. In contrast, the ball rolled into the path of Mbaoma to pass into an empty net for Enyimba’s second.

Akor would then fail to properly deal with a free kick to allow Collins to score from close range on 70 minutes.

On the stroke of full-time, Obot curled in a direct free over Gombe United’s wall and past Akor to put the icing on the cake for a big win for the champions, who now have 39 points, same as second-placed Lobi Stars with an inferior goals difference.

Also, on Thursday, Abia Warriors and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) claimed slim 1-0 wins over Kwara United and Bendel Insurance, respectively.

Sunday, Megwo netted the goal that turned out to be the winner for the Warriors in 53 minutes, while 3SC needed a late Taiye Murtala goal inside added time to edge past Insurance.

WHOLESOME WEDNESDAY

The six games on Wednesday produced 19 goals, with Plateau United hitting five at Heartland in a 5-1 win. Interestingly, in the reverse in October of 2023, Plateau United managed a 1-0 win over their hosts at the New Jos Stadium.

Wednesday was different as Plateau United raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes through Olawale Doyeni and Lawrence Agbor.

Plateau United goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso kept out a spot-kick from Promise Anyanwu before halftime. Regular service resumed after the break for Plateau United as Nenrot Silas scored a third in 47 minutes.

Victor Makalala and Harrison Ebah scored late in the contest on 88 and 90 minutes, respectively. In added time, Onyekachi Okafor got one back for Heartland, who remained rooted at the bottom of the standings.

The Northwest Derby between Katsina United and Kano Pillars was a five-goal thriller. Katsina United edged their rivals by the odd, with Jonas Emmanuel, Azeez Falolu, and Nazifi Yahaya scoring their goals. Ibrahim Mustapha Yuga and Mustapha Umar netted for Pillars.

Bayelsa United and Sunshine Stars saw off Doma United and Lobi Stars by identical scorelines of 2-0. Ekeson Okorie double-ensured Bayelsa United moved further away from relegation places as they extended their good results to five games without defeat. Temitope Vincent and Chigozie Iwundu scored first-half goals to help Sunshine Stars beat Lobi in Akure.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, Kenechukwu Agu sealed a 1-0 victory for Rangers through a direct free kick on 56 minutes against Remo Stars.

Their poor run of form for Akwa United continued in Lagos, where Sporting Lagos came from behind to win 2-1. Tochukwu Michael scored two late goals inside the final 10 minutes to cancel Suleiman Sani’s goal for Akwa United.

Argentina’s friendly against Nigeria scrapped

Argentina’s (un)friendly world tour gets messier and messier

Argentina’s players qualification for Sunday’s epic final match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Inside World Football reports that Argentina’s upcoming friendly against Nigeria in the United States has been scrapped, and the world champions will instead play Costa Rica.

As the fallout from Argentina’s controversial Asian tour continues, “due to an administrative error,” Nigeria has had to pull out of the eagerly awaited friendly in California on March 26.

Argentina’s other match on the tour, on March 22, is against El Salvador in Philadelphia, but that too was changed was a changed fixture, with AFCON champions Ivory Coast having initially been lined up to face Lionel Messi and Co.

The World Cup champions were initially set to face Nigeria and Ivory Coast during a tour of China rather than the USA. Still, the Chinese authorities called it off in protest at Messi’s no-show at another exhibition fixture in Hong Kong with his club Inter Miami.

Messi said before Miami’s friendly against a local all-star team in Hong Kong on February 4 that he had a groin injury. His absence sparked spectator anger, mainly when, three days later, he played in another friendly in Tokyo.

I cut Tyson Fury’s eye-Smakici

Causing Oleksandr Usyk fight to be postponed – he provoked me with ‘dirty moves’

Agron Smakici has given talkSPORT his side of the story regarding what happened with Tyson Fury’s cut, Talk Sport reports.

At the start of February, the Gypsy King was forced to postpone his undisputed heavyweight world title clash with Oleksandr Usyk from February 17 to May 18 after suffering a gash in sparring.

This was caused by Croatian sparring partner Smakici, who joined White and Jordan on talkSPORT on Thursday to reflect on the situation.

“Nothing special happened,” he explained, “We had a good sparring session all day before that.

“It’s just he put some fire with bad talking and dirty moves.

“When my head was down, he did some dirty tricks, which made the fire and the heat going on.

“And then I gave 100 percent of me, and the injury happened, unfortunately…

“He said some things, but it’s not so much what he said. He put my head down.

“Even if I put his head down many times because I have good wrestling skills, he put my head down once, and he was doing bad things with my head, if you know what I mean.”

There has been some controversy about whether the blow that cut Fury was an elbow.

However, Smakici is adamant this is not the case.

“I am 100 percent sure it was my first,” he insisted.

“Also after the cut he didn’t say, ‘Hey that was an elbow,’ or something like that.

“There’s a difference between an elbow and gloves with a fist – you would feel the elbow, it’s like a hammer.

“Maybe it slipped because he was pulling my head forward.

“Maybe it slipped to the elbow, but it wasn’t on purpose.”

Seven nations earn Paris 2024 Greco spots

At Pan-Am Qualifiers, Julfalakyan falls short

World champion and 2012 London Olympic silver medalist Arsen JULFALAKYAN’s (ARG) quest for his fourth Olympics has fallen short, at least for now.

Julkafalyan, who made the switch from Armenia to Argentina, lost his quarterfinal to Kamal BEY (USA) at the Pan-American Olympic Qualifiers in Acapulco, Mexico, only to see Bey lose his semifinal, the Paris Olympics qualification about later.

The opening day of the tournaments saw competitors across six Greco-Roman Olympic weight classes take the mat to secure a spot for their nations for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The top two wrestlers, or the semifinals winners, in each of the 60kg, 67kg, 77kg, 87kg, 97kg, and 130kg weight classes earn a ticket for Paris.

The spotlight initially fell on Julfalakyan. Despite his decorated past and a silver at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix last month, the 36-year-old faced a tough challenge, bowing out in a closely contested 4-2 quarterfinal against Bey. He took the lead but failed to keep up with Bey in the second period.

Bey, a favorite coming into the qualifiers, then lost the semifinal to reigning Pan-Am champion Jair CUERO (COL), 6-4, despite finishing the first period with a 4-0 lead. The Colombian kickstarted his comeback with a sweet counter to a shooting Bey before pulling off two two-point moves. The two had previously met in another tight contest last week in the Pan-Am Championships final, where Cuero held criteria.

In the other semifinal, three-time Pan-American champion Yosvanys PENA (CUB) beat Joilson RAMOS (BRA) 11-1. Pena also represented Cuba in the 77kg category at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 87kg category also witnessed an upset, with Daniel Gregorich (CUB), a three-time Pan-Am champ, losing his semifinal to Spencer WOODS (USA). Gregorich took a 3-0 lead with a takedown and then a par terre. But as he tried a roll, he got stuck under Woods, who threatened him to earn two points.

Woods — who won the Pan-Am Championships gold last year at 82kg before moving up a division — took a 6-3 win after Gregorich was called for a leg foul when Woods was performing a lift in the second period.

Carlos MUNOZ (COL) beat Luis AVENDANO (VEN) 11-1 in the other semifinal to earn a Paris quota. Munoz countered an arm spin from Avendano to score two points and then lifted him for two more. Avendano was called for a leg foul, giving Munoz a 6-0 lead. He then tried to double-arm throw but fell on his back to get 4 points.

The United States would have expected a Paris ticket at 67kg from Alejandro SANCHO (USA), but the Pan-Am champion lost the semifinal to Nestor ALMANZA (CHI) 6-1. Sancho — who finished third at his first Pan-Am Championships in 2020 and then secured the 67kg quota for the U.S. at the Olympic qualifier the same week that year — couldn’t repeat the success.

The 21-year-old Chilean Almanza, who lost to Sancho in the Pan-Am Championships semifinal last week, dramatically avenged that loss. As Sancho tried to throw him from par terre in the second period, Almanza landed on top and sat on Sancho as the referee called the pin.

The other semifinal saw a battle between former Pan-Am champion and Olympians. Andres MONTANO (ECU), the runner-up from last week, narrowly edged out Julian HORTA (COL) 2-1 to secure a berth in the Paris Games at 67kg.

In the 97kg category, Kevin MEJIA (HON) continued his impressive form, securing a 10-0 victory over Carlos ADAMES (DOM). The three-time Pan-Am champion, who struck gold last week, dispatched his opponent with 15 seconds left in the first period.

Alan VERA (USA), who finished runner-up at the Pan-Am Championships last week, also clinched his Olympic berth with a solid 7-1 win against Luillys PEREZ (VEN).

The heavyweight 130kg class played out as expected, with veteran Yasmani ACOSTA (CHI) and Cohlton SCHULTZ (USA) clinching the Olympic berths.

In a six-man bracket, the wrestlers were divided into groups of three. Acosta emerged as the top wrestler to set up a semifinal against Eduard SOGHOMONYAN (BRA), while Schultz topped the other group to get Moises PEREZ (VEN) in the semifinal.

Acosta got the first par terre and rolled Shoghomonyan twice to lead 5-0, which he held until the clock expired to earn the Paris quota—the 35-year-old Cuba-born naturalized Chilean who had previously finished fifth at the Tokyo Olympics.

Schultz, who had two pins in two bouts in the group, beat Perez 2-1 as he scored step out at the start of the second period to lead 2-0. Perez got the passivity point with a minute 37 seconds left but failed to score any more points.

In the 60kg category, Raiber RODRIGUEZ (VEN) showcased his dominance with a convincing 9-1 victory over Dicther TORO (COL). The 2016 Olympian had won the Pan-Am gold last week. Kevin DE ARMAS (CUB) clinched the second birth with a 10-0 rout of Yerony LIRIA (DOM) in the semifinal. The Cuban also defeated top seed Ildar HAFIZOV (USA), who skipped the Pan-Ams to prepare for the qualifiers.

The qualifiers will continue with six women’s wrestling weight classes, beginning at 1000 hours local time, and Paris qualification semifinals are scheduled for 1700 hours local time.

Ex Francis Ngannou Sparring Partner Talks Heavyweight Fights

Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou will headline “Knockout Chaos” on March 8, and as we build up to that fight, we will be bringing you plenty until fight night. Joe Joyce (15-2, 14 KOs), who previously sparred with Ngannou, spoke to Sky Sports about the two heavyweight contests on the stacked card, Ricky Carroll reports for The Big Fight Weekend.

EX Francis Ngannou Sparring Partner Talks Clash With Anthony Joshua

Joe Joyce Discusses Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou

Joyce is undoubtedly looking to return to the top tier of the heavyweight division, starting with his upcoming bout against Kash Ali. “Juggernaut” has opened up about his sparring sessions with the Cameroonian fighter and the fight between AJ and the ex-MMA star.

Before Ngannou entered the world of boxing, Joyce experienced the threat carried by Ngannou as the two men engaged in a ferocious sparring session in Las Vegas. Joyce elaborated on the session: “Because he’s an MMA fighter and he’s not been concentrating on boxing, he was a little bit more open, and I could see where the shots were coming from, move out the way and keep him on the jab. But those power shots are whistling past my abs and chin in the process!”

“But we had a good spar, and I’ve got a lot of respect for Ngannou,” said “Juggernaught.” He added that he believes Ngannou can hurt AJ: “Of course. If he lands one of those big shots like he hit Fury, I don’t think Joshua will get up.”

Joseph Parker vs. Zhilei Zhang

Parker vs. Zhang will be the chief support act on March 8, with Joyce having a connection to both fighters – having defeated Parker but lost twice to Zhang. The New Zealander defeated Deontay Wilder last time and will be looking to continue this winning run. The London native knowing both fighters has spoken on the bout: “He’s a younger fighter than Zhang, if he can push him to those later rounds and Zhang gets tired that’s when you’ll see Parker put some shots together and he could potentially knock him out.”

He added: “Parker can be a bit more of a mover. Zhang’s feet are very static, but he holds that power and speed. He’s tough as well. So Parker’s going to have to box in and out. Maybe he’s better at fighting southpaws than me.

“If I were a betting man, I would probably bet on Zhang. But I would like to see Parker win.”
