Nothing to the row with Conceicao-Arteta

Gunners boss speaks out on Porto boss row amid claims he insulted Porto manager’s family

Tony Mogan reports for Metro that Mikel Arteta says there was ‘absolutely nothing’ in his row with Sergio Conceicao, with the Porto boss accusing him of ‘insulting his family’.

Arsenal booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 14 years after beating the Portuguese giants on penalties at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

During the Arsenal celebrations, Conceicao and Arteta were in a heated exchange on the pitch, with the Porto head coach refusing to shake hands and angrily gesturing at the Gunners boss.

In his post-match press conference, the Portuguese said, ‘What Arteta says or doesn’t say… During the game, he turned to the bench in Spanish and insulted my family, and in the end, I told him that whoever he insulted was no longer with us.

‘Let him worry about training his team with a lot of quality to play more.’

When Portuguese media asked Arteta what sparked the issue, he remarked ‘absolutely nothing’ before being quizzed again in his post-match press conference.

When asked what happened between him and the Porto boss at full-time, Arteta responded, ‘No comment,’ before quickly exiting, getting up from the table, and ending the presser.

Conceicao’s comments quickly began to circulate further following Arteta’s media obligations. The Daily Telegraph reports that Arteta strongly denied the accusation after being informed of the details behind Conceicao’s claim.

Tensions between Arteta and Conceicao were already high heading into Tuesday’s game. The Spaniard was critical of Porto’s approach in the first leg, insisting they had ‘no intention of playing.’

Conceicao returned to Arteta’s assessment in his post-match interview two weeks ago, commenting: ‘It’s an opinion. They wanted to play; we wanted to win.’

Leandro Trossard leveled the tie in the first half of Tuesday’s clash at the Emirates, which went to penalties.

David Raya was the Arsenal hero, saving two spot kicks with Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka all converting theirs.

Arsenal is entering the last eight of the Champions League, joining Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City.

The winners of Borussia Dortmund vs PSV Eindhoven and Atletico Madrid vs Inter Milan will join those sides in Friday’s draw.

Rumor Roundup (Mar. 13, 2024): Raw Gauntlet change, WWE Hall of Fame, more!

Many fans favored speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, Randall Ortman reports for Cageside Seats, as we examine the latest rumors churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back, which you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • According to Fightful Select, the Gauntlet match on Raw this week was changed. Originally, Bronson Reed was going to defeat Ricochet to start the match, with Sami Zayn coming in and winning it all from there.
  • On Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez claimed, “There have been moves regarding Brock Lesnar” and “There are movements to bring him back.” That doesn’t mean it will happen, but some could attempt to make it happen.
  • PW Insider says all VIP signings at WWE’s “The World” event in Philadelphia for WrestleMania week are sold out except for Charlotte Flair’s session.
  • They also say at least one more Hall of Fame inductee is expected for this year’s class. There’s also been talk that Legacy inductees could return this year as well.
  • During a Monopoly Events Q&A, Mandy Rose claimed she was not done with wrestling and could return if it was the right time.
  • Also, from Monopoly Events, Shelton Benjamin said the door is open to signing with AEW. The expectation remains that he will end up there.

Pau Cubarsi: The man who stopped Osimhen

Owen Hargreaves hails ‘ridiculously good’ Barcelona defender

Owen Hargreaves tipped Pau Cubarsi as Barcelona’s future star after his performance in the 3-1 Champions League win over Napoli on Tuesday evening, Chris Davie reports for Metro.

Xavi’s side drew 1-1 with Napoli in the first leg, but goals from Fermin Lopez, Joao Cancelo, and Robert Lewandowski secured Barca’s place in Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw.

Cubarsi, meanwhile, made his Champions League debut, and the 17-year-old delivered a brilliant performance against Napoli’s star striker, Victor Osimhen.

‘He [Cubarsi] was the show’s star,’ Hargreaves told TNT Sports after Barcelona’s win.

Yamal is different because he’s the winger. This kid [Cubarsi] was picking out passes for fun, and he made it look so easy.

‘He was physical when he needed to be, for a Spanish centre-back to be as physical against somebody like Osimhen is quite rare.

‘I thought his awareness, everything, he was just… 17 and his first start, he played ridiculously good.

‘That is a star, now and a star of the future.

‘I thought with Yamal he was the best player on the pitch.

‘He’s completely different from [Carles] Puyol. [Gerard] Pique was brilliant, but I think his long-range passing is better than either.

‘He’s unique. I think he’s very special. For 17 to play like that in a knockout game is rare.’

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle, working as a pundit alongside Hargreaves for TNT Sports, added: ‘Incredible performance, that.

‘We watched him all night; we were so impressed with him.

‘Look at this for a pass. It’s just top quality if that’s Ronald Koeman at his best, incredible, for 17.

‘As a defender to have that maturity, to cut across people, using his body to lean into them, he was shrewd, for 17 [he was playing] way above his age.’

Ambition of Resurgence: Hope and the symbol of optimism for Imo State

Once upon a time, in the vibrant city of Owerri, the heartbeat of Imo State, there lay a team that symbolized the hopes and dreams of its people – Heartland FC. But as fate would have it, the team found itself on the brink of collapse, facing relegation once again from the Nigerian football league.

Amid this turmoil, a voice arose from the heart of the sports community – Emeka Obasi, a renowned sports journalist known for his incisiveness and honesty. With passion burning in his soul, Emeka penned a powerful message directed at Hope (Uzodinma) about Imo State’s symbol of optimism.

In his message, Emeka reminded Hope that Heartland FC’s struggle went beyond mere economic statistics. It is a matter of pride, identity, and the collective spirit of the people. He emphasized that football could uplift communities, inspire the youth, and unite hearts in adversity.

With his words resounding through the streets of Owerri, Emeka urged Hope to recognize the importance of supporting Heartland FC, not just financially, but with unwavering commitment and belief. He called out to the Imo State governor, urging him to see beyond the odds and invest in the region’s football future.

As Emeka’s message spread like wildfire, it ignited a spark of hope in the people’s hearts. They should rally together, from passionate fans to local businesses, now bonded by their determination to ensure that Heartland FC will rise again.

And so, fueled by Emeka’s words and the community’s unwavering support, Heartland FC hopes to embark on a journey of resurgence. With each victory on the field, they will prove that football is more than just a game—it is a guiding light of hope, a testament to the players’ and officials’ resilience, the strength that lay in the human spirit, and a source of pride for the people of Imo State.

The hope for immediate results will be the cheers of victory that echo through the stadium once more. For Hope to smile upon Imo State, the people want assurance that all hands are on deck to ensure that their darling Heartland FC would never go down nor falter again under his watch as the leader of the state of Imo.

CAFonline reports that Nigerian women performed commandingly at the 13th edition of the African Games in Cape Coast on Monday, securing a convincing 4-0 win over Senegal.

As it unfolds, anticipation mounts for a pivotal matchup in Group B of the women’s football competition at the Cape Coast Stadium.

The reigning champions, fresh off a resounding victory over Morocco, are gearing up to face Senegal. Both teams aim to secure their spot in the semi-finals.

With their resounding victory over Morocco in their first group match, Nigeria enters this encounter with momentum and determination to secure their spot in the semi-finals.

The match’s narrative is characterized by Nigeria’s dominance on the field, which resulted in a commanding 4-0 win.

The opening goal came from Loveth Njideka Edeh, setting the stage for Nigeria’s attacking prowess.

Following suit, Motunrayo Ezekiel added to Nigeria’s lead with a spectacular volley, showcasing the team’s skill and determination.

As the game progressed, an own goal by Senegal’s Aisha Kales further extended Nigeria’s lead, highlighting their dominance in the match.

The final blow came from Chioma Olise in the 82nd minute, capping off a remarkable performance with a well-executed goal.

Coach Chris Danjuma expressed his satisfaction with the team’s emphatic win, emphasizing their relentless pursuit of excellence.

He stated, “Our mentality coming into this game was to improve on the Morocco game by three times. We needed to keep going till it was beyond their reach.”

Danjuma’s ambition shines through as he sets his sights on the ultimate prize, expressing his desire to face Ghana in the final.

However, Senegal’s coach, Mbayang Thiam, acknowledges the challenges ahead following their heavy defeat against Nigeria.

Despite the setback, Thiam remains focused on refining her young team’s performance.

She noted, “We didn’t see this heavy defeat coming. The results don’t reflect the game.” Thiam emphasizes the need for improvements in defense and attack, highlighting the team’s youth and the mental impact of the referee’s decisions.

As the African Games’ women’s football competition unfolds, all eyes will be on Nigeria, which has demonstrated its desire to retain the title.

Piqué sends public message to Roberto

After a brilliant cameo & assist vs Napoli

Barcelona legend Gerard Piqué took to social media on Tuesday evening to express his appreciation for former teammate Sergi Roberto, Conor Laird reports for GSFN.

Xavi and co., of course, marked their return to action a short time ago, welcoming Italian champions Napoli to Catalunya’s capital for the second leg of the Last-16 tie between the clubs.

When all was said and done, despite giving up many presentable opportunities at the back, the Blaugrana’s attacking flair ultimately proved enough to give rise to a 3-1 triumph.

Much of the scoring came courtesy of goals from Fermín López, João Cancelo, and Robert Lewandowski.

The latter proved critical in all but ending the hopes of a dangerous Napoli outfit. Frontman Lewandowski may have converted it, but the credit, in truth, went to the aforementioned Sergi Roberto.

Introduced off the bench during the second half, midfielder Roberto enjoyed a stellar cameo. His fine burst and assistance teasing Barca’s third came as a reward.

And, as alluded to above, quick to send a message of appreciation to Barcelona’s club captain was Gerard Piqué, who took to his official ‘X’ account to unveil the following simple post:

Osimhen & Co blowup €10m payday

As Barcelona roars back to the Champions League quarter-finals after win over Napoli

Napoli stars’ quest to remain in line for a €10m bonus payout by club boss Aurelio De Laurentiis went up in smoke in Montjuïc with their 1-3 loss to La Liga giants Barcelona in a UEFA second leg quarter-final tie.

Yet Victor Osimhen and Co. knew in advance before the Partenopei’s trip to Catalunya of the Napoli president’s promise to manager Francesco Calzona’s players of earning a €10 million incentive should they qualify for the 2025 Club World Cup.

According to AP News, Barcelona returned to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time in four years with a 3-1 win over Napoli on Tuesday.

The report anchored by the Irish Examiner claims that Fermín López, João Cancelo, and Robert Lewandowski scored for Barcelona, which advanced 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Italy three weeks ago.

Amir Rrahmani scored for Napoli, which couldn’t repeat its last eight appearances from last season.

Barcelona had been eliminated from the group stage in the last two years and hadn’t reached the quarterfinals since 2019-20 when it lost to Bayern Munich.

The Champions League could be Barcelona’s last realistic chance for a title this season. It was eliminated in the Copa del Rey and trails Spanish league leader Real Madrid by seven points.

Barcelona struggled to keep Napoli from threatening after taking the early lead at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, making his 100th UEFA appearance, was tested often by Napoli’s attack.

Barcelona had a few chances to increase its lead on counterattacks before Lewandowski sealed the win from close range in the 83rd after an assist by substitute Sergi Roberto.

López put the hosts ahead with a shot from the middle of the area in the 15th minute after a low cross by Raphinha, who also set up Cancelo’s goal two minutes later. The Brazilian forward hit the post from inside the area, and the ball bounced back for an easy strike by Cancelo.

Napoli scored in the 30th, and Rrahmani found the net with a low left-footed shot for his first European goal.

World Athletics reports that three reigning world pole vault champions will compete at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Doha on 10 May. Katie Moon, Nina Kennedy, and Molly Caudery have all been announced for the event.

USA’s Moon and Australia’s Kennedy shared the title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last August after they cleared 4.90m and couldn’t be separated.

The moment was among those shortlisted for the International Fair Play Award at the World Athletics Awards 2023.

Great Britain’s Caudery finished fifth in Budapest and went on to win the world indoor title in Glasgow earlier this month, clearing 4.80m. She competed as the world leader thanks to the PB of 4.86m she set in Rouen in February.

Moon, who is the defending Diamond League champion, finished third in Glasgow, clearing 4.75m.

“I had a frustrating build-up to the World Indoors due to an achilles injury, but I was so happy to walk away with some hardware for the US,” said the Olympic and two-time world champion. “Now I’m looking forward to building back up for the outdoors and returning to Doha, where I opened my season with a victory last year.”

The trio will be joined in Doha by Finland’s world bronze medallist Wilma Murto, USA’s two-time world indoor champion Sandi Morris, Slovenia’s 2022 world indoor bronze medallist Tina Sutej and USA’s Pan American Games champion Bridget Williams.

The announcement of the pole vault field for Doha follows confirmation that Sweden’s world pole vault record-holder Mondo Duplantis will kick off his Diamond League campaign in China, competing in Xiamen on 20 April and then Suzhou on 27 April.

Also in Doha, Morocco’s Olympic and two-time world 3000m steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali will return to the scene of the 3000m PB he set last year, to this time race his specialist event.

After finishing fourth in that 3000m, El Bakkali went on to have an unbeaten season of finals in the steeplechase, which included him gaining his second world title in Budapest.

Duplantis, Tamberi, and Jacobs set for Czech Republic Golden Spike

Global champions Mondo Duplantis, Gianmarco Tamberi, and Marcell Jacobs will be among the stars in action when the Ostrava Golden Spike – this season’s sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting – returns on 28 May, World Athletics reports.

World pole vault record-holder Duplantis was among the five meeting record-breakers at last year’s event in Ostrava, clearing 6.12m to achieve his second win at the event.

He improved his world record to 6.23m at the end of the season in Eugene and will return to Ostrava as a two-time world and two-time world indoor champion following his victories in Budapest and Glasgow.

“I am so excited to be coming back to Ostrava for the third time,” said Sweden’s Duplantis. “I had great form last year and hope to improve in the upcoming year. It could be super fun, a nice tune-up before the Olympics, and I hope to jump high.”

The field will also feature Czech athletes Matej Scerba and David Holy.

In the men’s high jump, Italy’s Olympic and world champion Tamberi will look to make a statement ahead of the European Championships. The Ostrava meeting is set to be his sole competition before the continental event in Rome.

“I am looking forward to competing,” said Tamberi, who returns to Ostrava for the fourth time. I love the atmosphere, the track, the weather, and that place to jump. I am looking forward to jumping high there.”

Czech champion Jan Stefela will be among his competition.

Over on the track, Italy’s Olympic 100m champion Jacobs will race at the Ostrava Golden Spike for the first time as he works towards the European Championships on home soil.

“It is going to be my first time in Ostrava. I could not miss the opportunity to run in front of such a great audience and on the high-speed track,” he said.

Organizers have already announced Haruka Kitaguchi, Steven Gardiner, and Ewa Swoboda for the event at the Mestsky Stadion.
