Record number of countries win gold at World Athletics Championships Oregon22

0

The World Athletics Championships Oregon22 have provided ideal conditions for the best track and field athletes in the world to shine on a global stage, with exhilarating and record-breaking performances by both individual athletes and national teams.

More than 1700 athletes from 179 countries (plus the Athlete Refugee Team) have competed in Oregon, watched by almost 150,000 ticketed spectators, and producing three world records.

In terms of performance, this will go down as the most universal edition in the history of the global event.

The record for the number of countries winning gold medals at one championships has been broken, with 29 countries taking turns on the top step of the podium, compared with 26 in 2017.

More countries than ever before have had athletes reach the finals of events in Oregon. The list of 81 countries is up from 76 countries in Doha in 2019, with Liberia, Niger, Pakistan, Samoa, Philippines and Guatemala reaching a final for the first time in World Championships history.

Underlying the diversity and global reach of track and field, every continental area features at least two world champions, while Peru, Kazakhstan and Nigeria won their first ever gold medals, and India and Burkina Faso also had their best ever medal performances (silver).

The USA team broke the record for the most medals at a single championships, earning 33 in total, 13 of them gold.

That tally was strengthened by medal sweeps in the men’s 100m, 200m and shot put. Jamaica, meanwhile, achieved a medal sweep of its own, taking all three medals in the women’s 100m.

Peru’s Kimberly Garcia has been the top individual performer of the championships, landing double gold in the women’s race walks. Had she been entered as a separate team, she would place seventh on the medals table.

Beyond the dominant performers, there have also been many close finishes and competitive finals. Just two hundredths of a second separated the medalists in the men’s 100m. The women’s 10,000m also produced a close and thrilling finish, and the men’s shot put once again provided an exciting crescendo. Even the men’s 35km race walk went down to the wire, with just one second separating gold from silver.

“Tonight we had a spectacular ending to a ground-breaking championships – with two world records and stunning racing in a passionate sold-out stadium to add the final flourish to the first world outdoor championships held in the USA,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. “We have had more countries win gold than ever before and more countries reach finals than ever before. This wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our Local Organizing Committee, the commitment of the state of Oregon and the local authorities, and the dedication of our Member Federations, officials and volunteers. I thank them all for making this an unforgettable world championships, but most of all I thank the athletes, who have once again put on the greatest show on earth.”

Other performance milestones achieved in Oregon include:

  • world records from Sydney McLaughlin in the 400m hurdles (50.68), Tobi Amusan in the 100m hurdles (12.12) and Mondo Duplantis in the pole vault (6.21m)
  • 13 championship records and 30 world-leading performances
  • 3 world records, 19 area records, 92 national records, 1 world U20 record
  • The fastest ever marathons at a major championships
  • The first time that three women have broken nine minutes for the 3000m steeplechase
  • Allyson Felix extended her record medal total to 20 after gold in the women’s 4x400m and bronze in the mixed 4x400m

Broadcast and social media

Our US broadcast partner NBC reports that this championship has already reached more viewers (13.7 million) than any previous World Athletics Championships with three days of ratings still to be reported (Friday-Sunday).

Coverage on the NBC broadcast network for the first weekend (average of 2.0 million viewers) ranked as the most-watched World Athletics Championships since Osaka 2007 and represented a 159% gain compared to NBC’s coverage of the 2019 edition. These numbers are expected to be even more impressive when the final three days of competition are reported early this week.

The World Championships has also spurred substantial growth and interaction across World Athletics’ social media platforms, attracting 400 thousand new followers, more than seven million engagements and more than 41 million video views, bringing the total following for our official social channels to more than 9.1 million across five platforms.

Legacy

World Athletics and parkrun have combined to help the Eugene and Springfield communities in Oregon open parkrun events, as a legacy of the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.With one existing parkrun event already in Oregon, this will increase the number of opportunities for citizens and visitors of the state to be active and social in the great outdoors.

The first event from this collaboration is planned to launch in the coming months, paving the way for many more across the state and beyond.

There are currently 53 parkrun locations in the United States. More than seven million people have participated

Carl Lewis Rages From His Couch Over U.S. Relay ‘Clown Show’ as Sprinters Bungle Yet Another Tokyo Event

0

The nine-time Olympic champ and supreme anchorman—watching from home—has publicly flipped out as four more of the fastest men in the world just blew it again for Team USA.

Carl Lewis called it a “clown show.” Michael Johnson said it was “embarrassing and ridiculous.” And they were right.

The U.S. men’s 4 x 100 relay team failed even to qualify for the final at the Tokyo Games on Thursday after trailing in a distant sixth in their heat. The result means that, in an event they once dominated, Team USA has not even medalled in five consecutive Olympics.

Ostensibly, the team’s failure was blamed on a bungled baton exchange between Fred Kerley and Ronnie Baker at the second to third leg handoff, with Baker needing three attempts to grab the baton, but the truth is the team never really looked much of a threat. The first leg was run by Trayvon Bromell, who arrived in Tokyo as the fastest man in the world but failed even to qualify for the 100m final. After a disappointing display on Thursday, he admitted: “I didn’t do my job.”

Watching the race from his home in Houston was Carl Lewis, whose nine Olympic gold medals include two from the relay. Lewis, now 60, anchored the American team as they set world records at both the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and in Barcelona eight years later.

Never one to mince his words, America’s greatest Olympian took to Twitter after the race: “The USA team did everything wrong in the men’s relay. The passing system is wrong, athletes running the wrong legs, and it was clear that there was no leadership.

“It was a total embarrassment, and completely unacceptable for a USA team to look worse than the AAU kids I saw.”

In a subsequent interview with USA Today, Lewis picked apart the performance. He asked why, for example, Baker, a straight-line 100m specialist, had been asked to run the third leg, around the bend. “I’ve never seen Ronnie Baker run a turn in my life,” he said. “Go back and watch the third leg. Look at him. He looks like he’s running on ice because he’s never run a turn.”

“It’s totally avoidable,” he added. “And America is sitting there rooting for the United States and then they have this clown show. I can’t take it anymore… It is not hard to do the relay.”

“This was a football coach taking a team to the Super Bowl and losing 99-0 because they were completely ill-prepared.”

It’s easy, of course, to talk about some sort of U.S. relay “curse.” The American men last claimed the 4 x 100 title at the 2000 Sydney Games, anchored by Maurice Greene. The closest they have come since then was a second-place finish to Usain Bolt’s Jamaican quartet in 2012, only to have to return their silver medals after Tyson Gay failed a drugs test.

But it’s clear that the runners were pretty much all in the wrong slots in Tokyo. Apart from Baker being asked to run the turn, Bromell had not run the opening leg of a relay since 2015. Kerley had never run No. 2 at a major championship—and as the fastest American in the 100m in Tokyo, he should have been anchoring the team.

Talking to reporters in the mixed zone after the race, Baker admitted the team had “not much” practice in the run-up. Cravon Gillespie, who was asked to anchor the team despite not even qualifying for the 100m in Tokyo, told NBC Sports the team didn’t even get together until two days ago. “We definitely have to get more practice in,” he said.

It was that lack of preparation that irked another great American runner, the four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson, who tweeted: “This isn’t rocket science.”

“Trying to get two people running full speed to exchange a baton within a 20-meter zone requires practice! Especially when you haven’t won this event since Sydney 2000 due to drops and zone violations! Embarrassing and ridiculous.”

The relay quartet should not take all the blame after what is looking like a disastrous Game on the track for Team USA. There were upsets in the 100 and 200 finals and, on Thursday, in the 110m hurdles, where the hot favourite Grant Holloway, who seemed to begin his gold-medal celebration before the race was run, was beaten to the line by Hansle Parchment of Jamaica.

And in the later 400m final, another event traditionally dominated by American runners—including Johnson—Team USA once again finished outside the medals as the elegant Bahamian Steven Gardiner cruised to victory.

This could end up being the first Olympic Games the United States has ever competed in with no American man bringing home a gold from the track.

U.S. Sprint Legend ‘Accused of Racism’ After Questioning Nigerian World Record

0

‘UNACCEPTABLE’

“Just because it’s not an American WR doesn’t mean the times were incorrect,” one critic tweeted.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson says he was “accused of racism” after publicly questioning the accuracy of times recorded at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan looked visibly stunned when she saw her winning time of 12.12 seconds in the 100m hurdles semi-final on Sunday. Her run at Hayward Field had obliterated the existing world record—set by American Kendra Harrison in 2016—by 0.08 seconds. World Athletics awarded her a $100,000 prize for breaking the record.

But in his analysis for the BBC, sprint legend Johnson questioned the accuracy of the timings in the event. He highlighted the fact that out of the 24 athletes who had competed in the three semi-final events, 12 recorded new personal bests. The recorded level of competition was so high that a time of 12.52 meant competitors wouldn’t even make the final, despite it being a time that would have won the world title at six previous world championships.

Amusan went on to win the final with an even faster time of 12.06, but it did not count as an official world record due to a +2.5m/s tailwind blowing during the event. What made Amusan’s runs even more astounding was her unusual choice of footwear: She was spotted wearing Adizero Avanti Tyo Tinman Elite shoes designed for distance running rather than sprinting. The spiked cleats have a soft sole containing a high-tech layer of carbon rods and foam, which led some to wonder if the super shoes—which Amusan said she wore after suffering tendonitis in the arch of her foot—had given her an unfair advantage.

“I don’t believe 100h times are correct,” Johnson tweeted after the event. “World record broken by .08! 12 PBs set. 5 National records set. And Cindy Sember quote after her PB/NR ‘I thoroughly I was running slow!’ All athletes looked shocked,” he added.

Some social media users criticized Johnson, labeling the American athlete “bitter.” One tweeted: “Just because it’s not an American WR doesn’t mean the times were incorrect.” Another fumed: “Michael Johnson are you naturally this dumb or do you have to put in effort? Why don’t you channel your energy to recovering from your stroke you Black racist! Toby Amusan is a world record holder and there’s nothing you can do about that.”

Johnson later addressed the backlash, tweeting: “In questioning the times of 28 athletes (not 1 athlete) by wondering if the timing system malfunctioned, I was attacked, accused of racism, and of questioning the talent of an athlete I respect and predicted to win. Unacceptable. I move on.”

Amusan: the accidental hurdler who became the world record-holder

0

The new world champion and world record-holder in the women’s 100m hurdles only got into hurdling through a quirk of fate.

Tobi Amusan started out as a sprinter and long jumper as a youngster in her native Nigeria.

At 13, she turned up to compete in a local athletics meet, only to find that just one event remained on the programme: the hurdles.

Amusan’s coach encouraged her to enter. She ended up winning the race and the rest, as they say, is history.

The switch to the sprint hurdles paid off in sensational fashion on Sunday (24) when the 25-year-old Amusan smashed the world record, clocking 12.12 in the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22. She shaved 0.08 off the previous mark set by Kendra Harrison of the US in 2016.

Less than two hours later, Amusan came back for the final and ran another spectacular race to secure her first global gold medal and the first ever for Nigeria at a World Championships.

Amusan was clocked in 12.06, but the time won’t be recognized as a world record due to a tail wind of +2.5 m/s.

After fourth-place finishes at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and last year’s Tokyo Olympics, Amusan finally made it — not just onto the podium, but to the top of the medal stand.

“I was the ‘almost girl,’” she said. “I got fourth, fourth, fourth. Now I finally did it.”

And with a world record for good measure.

“The goal was to come out and to win this gold,” Amusan said. “I just did it. Honestly, I believe in my abilities but I was not expecting a world record at these championships. You know, the goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me but I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis. But it was just a matter of time.”

Looking back on how she made it here, Amusan said: “It has been a long journey.”

Born in the town of Ijebu Ode in the western Nigerian state of Ogun, Amusan gradually made the transition to hurdles as a teenager.

She continued competing in sprints and long jump but managed to squeeze in one hurdles session a week. She put cones and tires on the track to jump over because there were no hurdles in her town.

When she was replaced as a member of Nigeria’s 4x100m relay squad at the trials for the 2014 African Youth Games, she figured she had nothing to lose and entered the hurdles. She won that and went on to earn silver at the African Youth Games in Botswana.

Then followed a trip to Ethiopia in 2015, where she won African U20 gold, followed by a breakthrough victory at the All-African Games in Brazzaville, Congo.

“It was one of the biggest milestones of my career; winning that championship set me up for who I am today,” she said.

There was no looking back; she was now a full-time hurdler.

In 2016, Amusan received a scholarship to attend the University of Texas, El Paso, where hard training brought her personal best down from 13.10 to 12.83.

At UTEP, she worked with new coach Lacena Golding-Clarke, a three-time Olympian from Jamacia and the 2002 Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles champion.

There were setbacks along the way, of course. At the U20 world championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 2016, Amusan struggled with her technique and finished in fifth place. She was so devastated that she thought about quitting the sport.

But she regrouped and, after reaching the semi-finals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Amusan went unbeaten in the 2017 outdoor US collegiate season and won the NCAA title in a PB of 12.57.

She went into the 2017 world championships in London as the season’s fourth-fastest hurdler, but cramped up in the cold conditions and failed to make the final.

“After London,” she said, “I learned that the fact that I was in the mix, knowing I was capable of doing stuff at this age – I was just 20 – and being ranked in the top eight makes me confident that when I get my technique right, my speed right, and get a bit stronger, I’ll be fine.”

Indeed.

Amusan turned pro at the end of that year and went on to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, at the age of 20. She also triumphed at the African Championships later that year.

In 2019, she finished just 0.02 shy of a bronze in Doha. Last year, she came 0.45 from a medal at the delayed Tokyo Games.

“I don’t think there is a track and field event which can teach humility quite like the sprint hurdles,” Amusan said. “You can be the fastest in the field but one mistake can spell the end for your race. A hurdler should never go into any race with any level of complacency or arrogance. It teaches you to be humble.”

For now, at least, Amusan can afford to be a little less humble.

After all, she’s simply the fastest of all time and the best in the world.

Not bad for someone who became a hurdler by chance.

Transfer Talk – 24/7/2022

Manchester United target £63m Frenkie de Jong alternative

Manchester United are reportedly seeking an alternative to priority signing Frenkie de Jong by targeting Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The Red Devils had their sights firmly locked onto Barcelona star De Jong with a £71.5m deal between the clubs said to be agreed.

However, the negotiations have since stalled after it was reported by the Daily Mail that De Jong has no intention of joining the Premier League giants.

Now Italian outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi have reported that the 20-time league winners have identified Milinkovic-Savic, currently valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, as a potential alternative to De Jong.

The 27-year-old Serbian is contracted with Lazio until the summer of 2024 and has expressed his desire to leave Lazio this summer and move to a top European club.

The player’s agent is reportedly working on collecting proposals for the midfielder but isn’t ready to hold a meeting with the Italian side just yet.

Erik ten Hag has already made one midfield signing this summer after acquiring the services of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

However, the Manchester club require more talent in the centre of the field after losing midfielders Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata.

Whatever happens this summer, it is expected that United will make another midfield signing, whether that’s de Jong or an alternative.

Spurs interested in £55m Serie A defender

Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly interested in signing Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan.

According to the Italian outlet, Il Messaggero Spurs are interested in the 27-year-old Slovakian, which could see another Nerazzurri player reunited with former Inter and current Spurs coach Antonio Conte following the signing of Ivan Perisic.

Milan is said to have no intention of letting the Slovakia international leave the Nerazzurri this summer unless the right offer was made, which is said to be in the region of £55m.

However, Gazzetta Dello Sport has also reported that the north London club aren’t the only one interested.

Ligue1 giants Paris Saint-Germain have been negotiating a deal. However, Inter has since become impatient with the negotiations and could decide to keep their centre-back at the San Siro and offer him a new contract.

Milan Skriniar could head for Spurs

The report also claims Inter’s decision could come down to Gleison Bremer’s future as the club looks to sign the Brazilian as Skriniar’s replacement.

The Serie A club needs to raise funds this summer, putting Spurs in a stronger position should they decide to make a serious offer.

Spurs have already made one centre-back signing this summer after they signed Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan, but that’s not to say they won’t sign another on a permanent basis.

Bayern Munich hold talks with representatives of Spurs star

Bayern Munich have reportedly spoken to the representatives of Spurs striker Harry Kane

That’s according to a recent report from German outlet BILD, who claim the Bavarians have enquired about the possibility of Kane moving to the Allianz Arena next summer.

Although Kane, 28, appears to be settled at Spurs, speculation surrounding his future continues to rumble on.

Currently away on a pre-season tour with Antonio Conte, who is putting his Lilywhites through some gruelling physical exercises, Kane looks certain to start the new 2022-23 campaign wearing navy and white.

However, fans will be wondering how long the prolific England international will stick around, and those concerns will only grow if the Londoners fail to win any kind of major silverware next term.

Speaking recently about the club’s admiration for Spurs’ number 10, Bayern Munich boss Julian Naglesmann, who spoke to Manuel Veth, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, said: “He is very expensive. He is strong with the ball, strong body – but at that price, it is really difficult. We will have to see what happens in the future…”.

The German champions’ pursuit may have been accelerated by the recent departure of striker Robert Lewandowski, who joined Barcelona in a deal worth £40m.

Do you think Kane will ever play in the Bundesliga?

Bayern Munich breaks silence on the possibility of signing Harry Kane

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has spoken publicly about the possibility of signing Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane.

This isn’t the first time that Kane, 28, has seen his future speculated. Last summer saw the England international publicly reaffirm his desire to win major silverware – suggesting a shock move to a Premier League rival may be on the cards.

“I want to be playing in the biggest games, the biggest moments,” Kane told Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ ‘The Overlap’.

“I hope that we can have that conversation. I’m sure that [Daniel Levy, Tottenham Chairman] will want to set out the plan of where he sees it but ultimately it’s going to be down to me and how I feel and what’s going to be the best for me and my career this moment in time.”

Harry Kane has been linked with a move to Bayern MunichHarry Kane is in action for Tottenham Hotspur

As it happened, a move 12 months ago failed to materialize, leaving the 28-year-old with no choice but to carry on in London.

However, although currently away on a pre-season tour and being put through his paces by manager Antonio Conte, Kane has once again come under the spotlight.

Following Robert Lewandowski’s recent transfer to Barcelona, Naglesmann’s Bavarians are in need of a new centre forward and one name they appear to have on their shortlist is Tottenham Hotspur’s prolific number 10.

Speaking about whether or not they could make a move for the Lilywhites’ star man, Naglesmann, who spoke to Manuel Veth, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano, said: “He is very expensive. He is strong with the ball, strong body – but at that price, it is really difficult. We will have to see what happens in the future…”.
Antonio Conte is interested in signing a versatile 20-year-old attacker

Antonio Conte has reportedly asked Tottenham Hotspur director Fabio Paratici to try and sign talented youngster Nicola Zalewski from Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

According to the Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Conte is eyeing up young Poland international Zalewski, who came up through Roma’s youth academy before finding success under Mourinho.

The report states that PSG has also made recent inquiries regarding the 20-year-old, who is under contract with Roma until 2025, with several loan requests also having been made in January by Sampdoria and Cagliari, among others.

However, Mourinho has so far blocked all and any attempts to pluck his star asset away from his Italian side, with the versatile player becoming irreplaceable.

Spurs are interested in Nicola Zalewski (left)

Throughout the past season, the 20-year-old has become a key player switching from attacking midfield to left wing by Mourinho and knocking veteran player Leonardo Spinazzola from the first-choice position.

Zalewski joined Roma’s youth academy in 2018 and was promoted to the senior squad last summer. Since then, the Pole has made 25 senior appearances, directly contributing to three goals and is currently valued at £11m by Transfermarkt.

Ex-world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson believes his death is coming ‘really soon’

0
Boxer Mike Tyson has said he believes his death is coming “really soon” as he also opened up about his feelings on money.

The former world heavyweight champion made the comments on the podcast Hot Boxin’ with therapist Sean McFarland.

Tyson said on the podcast: “Some people want to analyze their success, which is ridiculous.

“We’re all going to die one day, of course.

“Then I look in the mirror and I see those little spots on my face and I go ‘wow, my expiration date is coming close, really soon, what do you do with that, how do you think about that death thing?”

When Mr McFarlane said he did not worry about death, the boxing legend replied: “I’m not sweating it, I just want to die consciously.

“I don’t want to die screaming. I’ve heard the last rights of a lot of people – a lot of famous people – and they’re getting ready to die, and they leave this planet screaming.”

He added that “money doesn’t mean s*** to me” and said it does not provide the security people think it does.

“What is security?’ he said.

“I don’t know. When you put money in your bank and you get a cheque every week and you can live for the rest of your life, is that security?

“It doesn’t mean you won’t catch a disease, or get hit by a car”.

Tyson had his first professional bout in 1985, and went onto hold the record as the youngest boxer ever to win a heavyweight title.

He later served time in prison after being convicted of rape and was released in 1995.

The podcast was not the first time that the ex-boxer has spoken candidly about death.

During a conference on psychedelics in Miami last year, Tyson revealed he had used Sonoran desert toad venom for psychedelic purposes, saying he felt like he “died” on his first trip.

Standard and KAA Gent have drawn 2-all in the opening match of the Belgian top flight, in a game full of emotions. Defending champions Club Brugge and Antwerp FC are seen as the main contenders for the title, together with outsiders KAA Gent and Anderlecht.

AA Gent were leading 1-2 in Liège when Noé Dusenne headed home the late equaliser for Standard, 2-2. Standard had climbed ahead on penalty, despite being reduced to 10 men, before Ghent turned the tables in the second half, through strikers Tarik Tissoudali and Darko Lemajic.

Gent were unhappy about two controversial decisions by referee Lawrence Visser, who could have given the visitors a penalty on two occasions, the last one in the dying minutes of the game when Ghent were putting up the pressure to make a late winner.

Who are the title favourites?

Club Brugge want to make it for in a row by claiming another league title. However, the month of August may become a turbulent one with some expected outgoing transfers. The young striker Charles De Ketelaere could move to AC Milan, while Noa Lang looks also determined to leave. The new coach Carl Hoefkens will have busy weeks ahead.

Ambitious Antwerp FC and its rich president Paul Gheysens are also eying the title. Veteran defender Toby Alderweireld, a former Tottenham player, was among the leading incoming transfers.

Anderlecht have to build again after Vincent Kompany left the club for Burnley, but they found Union coach Felice Mazzu prepared to come over – Union surprised to become runners-up last season. Of the four title contenders, AA Gent have had to change the least, with success coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck staying at the helm of the club. The defence has also stayed intact, with Jordan Torunarigha coming over on a permanent basis from Berlin.

Newcastle fans urge Ashworth to re-sign Champions League winner as Roma move nears

Georginio Wijnaldum’s failed Paris Saint-Germain move looks set to come to an end this summer after the pair agreed to part ways.

The Netherlands international joined the French giants from Liverpool last summer but failed to hold down a regular spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s side throughout the season and now the Paris-based club are happy for him to leave.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma is closing in on the midfielder and will sign the 31-year-old on loan with an obligation to buy him on a permanent basis next summer reports GOAL.

The Serie A side could have the deal for the midfielder wrapped up this weekend but Newcastle fans want to see the player back at St. James’ Park next season.

Wijnaldum looks set to join Roma

The 31-year-old was a popular figure during his one season at Newcastle, despite it ending in relegation to the Championship, and his performances that season got him a move to Liverpool; a club where the midfielder had great success under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Premier League and Champions League.

NewcastleWorld asked Toon fans if they would take Wijnaldum back and the response was unanimous.

“Yes in a heartbeat,” said @steve935566c. I’d take him on loan, great player,” @StefanCatton replied. “Just isn’t getting a look in at PSG, he’d be outstanding once again for us in our midfield.”

@BurstOfTheStar believes Wijnaldum would “thrive under Howe’s management”.

@mbizzle39 added: “I absolutely would – supremely talented and great mentality. One of the best players we’ve ever had.

“But he clearly has no interest in returning and we’re no longer a club that needs to try and sign players who don’t have their hearts set on playing for the club.”
Although it is nice to see Wijnaldum get some love from his former fans, it looks like these supporters will be disappointed, as Roma looks like the next destination to the former Newcastle man.
Outstanding €30m star rejects West Ham move for two reasons

Hoffenheim defender David Raum is set to sign for RB Leipzig snubbing interest from West Ham United.

According to Sky Germany, Raum attracted a wealth of elite interest this summer but has decided to accept a move to the Red Bull Arena as it will provide a chance to earn regular minutes and cement his place in Hansi Flick’s plans for Germany at the World Cup. The left-back also wants to play in the Champions League next season and these are said to be the reasons why he rejected other clubs such as West Ham.

Raum is in advanced negotiations with Leipzig over a move, which is on the verge of completion for a fee of around €30-35m plus add-ons states Sky Germany

Raum is a very talented left-back and is coming off the back of a great season, in which the German proved 13 assists and three goals in 32 Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim.

This will be a blow for David Moyes but the West Ham boss is returning to the Bundesliga to sign another left-back. Yesterday, it was reported that the Hammers have submitted a bid for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic who is believed to be worth €20m by the German club, reported The Guardian.

The London club are currently discussing personal terms with the Frankfurt star and talks are progressing well reports Fabrizio Romano, as Moyes moves on from missing out on Raum.

Chelsea star’s future relies on Kounde’s destination

Barcelona is in the advanced stages of signing Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta but the transfer is on standby due to the Catalan side’s pursuit of Jules Kounde.

According to Todofichajes once Chelsea signs the Sevilla defender they will agree to release Azpilicueta to the Spanish giants but with Barca not out of the race for the Frenchman, what the future holds for the Chelsea captain now is unknown.

The Spaniard has been linked with Barcelona for some time now and 32-year-old’s plan has always been to play for Xavi’s side during the coming season but his future solely depends on the future of Kounde, as the Blues might not sell their captain to the Catalan side if they hijack another signing.

Azpilicueta will be a cheap signing for Barcelona and would provide cover at both centre-back and right-back. According to Todofichajes, the 32-year-old will earn around €5m a year in Spain and will sign a two-year contract with an option of a third.

The defender’s team already considers him a Barcelona player and Todofichajes states that it could be official in the next few days. However, the developments in the Kounde race overnight may have an influence on this timeline.

David De Gea opens up on Man United’s future

Manchester United number one, David de Gea, has opened up about his future with the Red Devils during an interview before their 2-2 pre-season draw to Aston Villa earlier on Saturday.
De Gea, 31, is preparing for his 12th season at Old Trafford under new boss Erik ten Hag and during a recent interview, the goalkeeper has admitted that he would like to remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future.

“Yeah, if it’s possible,” the Spain international told reporters, as quoted by The Guardian.

“If they let me stay I will stay, for sure I’m really comfortable, and happy and hopefully before I leave we can win something more.”

However, as of yet, no talks have taken place to extend his current contract, which expires in June next year.

“I didn’t talk with anyone yet [about a renewal] but of course, because I want to be here for more years,” the 31-year-old added.

De Gea’s current contract consists of a basic wage worth around £ 350,00 per week (Sportrac), making him the club’s highest earner behind footballing legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
United number two Dean Henderson had attempted to knock the Spaniard off the top spot, but after a reemergence of form, De Gea’s place in between the Old Trafford remains assured.

Henderson has since joined newly promoted Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan deal.

Last season the 20-time-league winners scraped an embarrassing 6th place finish, and Ge Gea has now opened up on the criticism the team received.

“We cannot do the same because it was a disaster. I really hope we’re going to play much better,” the veteran shot-stopper said.

“It was very tough, embarrassing sometimes Some games were a mess. It was painful and unacceptable. Sometimes, you have to feel the pain to go up and keep going.”

Manchester United eye-up £34m defender

Manchester United are reportedly interested in the signature of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport (as quoted by Sports Witness), Dumfries could become a Red Devil this summer should the Premier League giants find a new home for their current right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United boss Erik ten Hag is said to appreciate Dumfries, as explained by transfer specialist and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano via Substack.

The 24-year-old England international has been seeing less and less game-time, with Diogo Dalot pipping the number one spot.

It is clear that the 20-time league winners need to shore up their defence this summer after the club conceded 57 goals last season, and so far, they have managed to complete the signings of Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez.

Wan-Bissaka is among the best right-backs in England at defending in one-versus-one situations but the rest of his game is not up to the standard Ten Hag will demand.

The Red Devils will ultimately need a top-quality player to fill that gap, and Dumfries could be the right man for the job.

The 26-year-old Dutchman arrived at the San Siro from PSV Eindhoven last summer on a four-year contract and has since made 45 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A club, scoring five goals and assisting with 7.

The report also states that Inter Milan currently values their player at £34m (€40m).

Major twist as Barcelona preparing to hijack Chelsea’s deal to sign France international Chelsea FC

Chelsea appears to have found themselves in yet another transfer saga.

The Blues, overseen by new owner Todd Boehly, are desperate for some fresh defensive additions.

Having lost both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger on free transfers at the end of last season after both centre-backs failed to extend their contracts, manager Thomas Tuchel will know that reinforcing his back line is a top priority.

However, although heavily linked with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Chelsea, who came close to signing the France international last summer, could end up missing out again.

That’s according to a recent report from journalist Gerard Romero, backed up by leading transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who both report that La Liga giants Barcelona are preparing to hijack the Blues’ potential deal.

News that Barcelona has not given up in their quest to sign the highly-rated defender will come as a bitter blow to Boehly and Chelsea, who are now facing a race against time to make some more signings before the new 2022-23 season gets underway next month.

PSG boss comments on the future of Leeds target bringing good news

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier has spoken about the future of forwarding Arnaud Kalimuendo.
The 55-year-old was asked a question about the 20-year-old’s future and stated via Fabrizio Romano: “Kalimuendo’s future? I’m more than happy with him, he’s doing great but then… there’s the market. We’ll see club and player’s decision”.

The Frenchman seems to hint that although he is happy with what the player is doing during pre-season, he is aware that there is interest in Kalimuendo and that the French club could sell him this summer.
This will come as good news for Leeds United and Jesse Marsch as the Premier League side are interested in the player. Last week, it was reported by 90min that Leeds was on the verge of an agreement to sign Kalimuendo from PSG. The report stated that the Yorkshire club will pay £21m for the 20-year-old to the French champions and have now become confident of securing the blockbuster new transfer to solve their striker crisis.

The Premier League club suffered from a lack of options up top last season after Patrick Bamford failed to follow up his impressive 20/21 season due to the striker having his season plagued by injuries. That nearly cost Leeds through relegation and it is a problem Marsch is set to address during this transfer window.

Kalimuendo has been at PSG since 2012 when he joined the Paris club’s youth set-up and made his professional debut in 2020. The forward spent the last two seasons on loan at Lens, where he scored 19 Ligue 1 goals across 60 appearances. At just 20, there is still plenty of room for the youngster to develop and this will excite Marsch as he works to improve the player further.
