Ruiz Jr calls out Deontay Wilder

0
Andy Ruiz Jr has admitted he is eyeing up a momentous fight with Deontay Wilder after defeating Luis Ortiz in an eliminator for the WBC title, Kishan Vaghela writes for Mailonline.

Ruiz knocked down Ortiz three times on the way to a victory by unanimous decision in Los Angeles.

The Destroyer knocked down the 43-year-old Ortiz twice in the second round and again in the seventh, but the Cuban battled through a badly swollen left eye and punched more accurately during long stretches of relative inactivity for both fighters.

Wilder – who was ringside to watch Ruiz’s win – meanwhile returns to the ring next month in a separate WBC eliminator against Robert Helenius.

And if the Bronze Bomber beats the 38-year-old, he would be in line to fight Ruiz for the right to challenge Tyson Fury for the belt.

Ruiz has already shown his willingness to go ahead with the fight against the 36-year-old if he wins, calling on Premier Boxing Champions boss Al Haymon to get a deal done.

‘God willing he [Wilder] wins against Robert in October,’ Ruiz said after his victory.

‘I and him are in the same organization, I want to thank Al Haymon, he can make this fight happen and let’s do it, let’s get it on.’

Ruiz pulled off one of the bigger upsets in recent heavyweight history when he took Anthony Joshua’s three championship belts in 2019, only to lose them back to his British opponent six months later.

Ruiz had fought just once since, but he got his head down again in training with hopes of getting another shot at the belts.

‘I do not want to be waiting,’ Ruiz said. ‘I want to fight at least three or four times a year. I’m hungry, man. I want to be a champion again.

‘It was very difficult,’ Ruiz added of the fight. ‘I was waiting for him to load up, and countering him when he did. It was a blessing we were able to be successful.’

Wilder has not fought since losing his trilogy fight against WBC champion Fury in October last year.

But Wilder sent out a warning to the rest of the division that he is ready to put his best foot forward once more.

Mourinho takes blame for Roma’s defeat

0
Jose Mourinho has accepted the blame after his Roma side were thrashed 4-0 away to Udinese, writes Jeorge Bird for Mailonline.

Although Roma had a good chance through Paulo Dybala early on, Udinese seized control of the game and frequently caused problems for Roma.

Destiny Udogie, on loan from Tottenham, put Udinese ahead, with Lazar Samardzic adding a second.

Roberto Pereyra and Sandi Lovic also scored for the hosts.

Mourinho praised Udinese for the way in which they managed the game but was frustrated with his team’s performance.

Mourinho told DAZN: ‘It was a difficult match. It was a match you could not risk going down, to begin with, because they defend well, they know how to manage the tempo of the game, and they’re physical.

‘If you go down against them you’re already in trouble. We had a good chance at the start with Dybala who was our best player tonight.’

But Udinese… every time they countered either they created a chance or they scored.’

Mourinho refused to criticize the performance of referee Fabio Maresca after the game.

He said: ‘The referee? When you lose 4-0 you don’t talk about the referee. I prefer to lose a game 4-0 rather than four games 1-0. This was ugly, both for us and the fans. But it’s life, and we move on.’

Mourinho was particularly frustrated with the mistakes that his team made, with defender Rick Karsdorp and goalkeeper Rui Patricio among those at fault.

He said: ‘We made mistakes at the worst times of the game. When we got close to 1-1, they practically closed it. They tried everything not to let us play. Now let’s move on, we have 10 points. We are all there, we make our own path.’

Despite the defeat, Roma is in fifth place in Serie A and is just one point behind Serie A leaders, Napoli.

Roma’s next game sees them face Ludogorets away in the Europa League on Thursday before they return to league action four days later away to Empoli.

Chelsea ask Spezia to develop Ethan

0
According to Chelsea community, SBNation, The question of Ethan Ampadu’s best position has been a constant one through his five-year Chelsea career, starting with his first-team debut, just six days after his 17th birthday, and still largely unanswered today.

He’s featured mostly in midfield in his 12 senior Chelsea appearances (under Conte and Sarri), but mostly in defence in his Chelsea youth team appearances. The latter was also the case for most of his time on loan at Sheffield United, but last year, with Venezia, he was back mostly in midfield. Now it’s Spezia’s turn to put him somewhere.

While it’s fantastic that he’s versatile enough to give his teams these options, there’s perhaps a danger of becoming a proverbial jack of most two trades rather than a master of one. Shakespeare might have said that the former is better than the latter, but according to Spezia manager Luca Gotti, we want Ampadu to be a master of central defence more than anything else.
Gotti knows Ampadu from his time at Chelsea as Maurizio Sarri’s assistant, so he will have to shift those perceptions a bit if Ampadu is to get time at centre back. And no, the 21-year-old is not that short, standing at right around 6 feet.
Ampadu qualified to play for Ghana but is cap tied to Wales.

Ross Barkley joins OGC Nice

0
Ross Barkley’s free agent status lasted less than one week after leaving Chelsea and the EPL by mutual consent only last week, Edwin Emeanua writes for Sports Joust.
He signed with Ligue 1 OGC Nice as a free agent this weekend.
Barkley now enters the growing list of ex-Premier League stars to switch allegiance to the French league.
He joins the Nice side with former EPL stars like Nicolas Pépé, Kasper Schmeichel, and Aaron Ramsey, at his new side this summer.
Former Chelsea goalkeeping hopeful, Marcin Bułka, is yet another recent familiar addition to OGC Nice.
The Nice-based side has a connection with England through its ownership by Ineos, which belongs to Englishman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe is one of Great Britain’s richest citizens. He was cited among possible buyers of Chelsea and was more recently named as a likely bidder for ownership of Manchester United.
Barkley, 28, left west London following a 4-and-a-half-year sojourn at Chelsea, where he logged only 100 shifts, hitting the net a total of 12 times with 11 assists.
Even as a fringe player with Chelsea despite spending an entire season on loan to Aston Villa, Barkley won the FA Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Europa League during his Stamford Bridge stint.

Kelechi Iheanacho scores ‘Fastest’ goal

0
Kelechi Iheanacho’s 50 seconds goal against Brighton Hove Albion at the Amex stadium is perhaps the fastest goal so far in the EPL this season, Edwin Emeanua reports for Sports Joust.
The Nigeria international forward scored off a Patson Daka pull-back from the left for his bottom of the Premier League side.
Iheanacho’s early goal only enraged the home team and spurred a Brighton fight-back to beat visiting Leicester City in a seven-goal cliffhanger on home turf.
Solly March’s header was redirected into the net in the eighth minute by Leicester defender Luke Thomas.
A faulty pass from James Maddison gifted Moises Caicedo to score off an Enock Mwepu assist as Brighton went ahead 2-1 in the fifteenth minute.
Leicester replied after 32 minutes of a frenetic first half. Youri Tielemans telegraphed a pass over Brighton’s defence from deep inside his own half, Daka repelled Lewis Dunk’s contest for the ball and placed the ball beyond the sprawling reach of Robert Sanchez to make it two all.
Alexis Mac Allister’s sensational 30 yards torpedo sailed unimpeded into Leicester’s net but, after more than four minutes of video assistant referee check, the spectacular Seagull goal was ruled out for offside.
However, Leandro Trossard would not be denied, scoring Brighton’s third off a Pascal Gross’ feed, and Trossard then earned a penalty from a clumsy Wilfred Ndidi challenge, which Mac Allister scored for the Seagulls’ fourth goal.

Argentina international Mac Allister then curled in an exceptional 25-yard free-kick in injury time for his second and Brighton’s fifth goal of the tie.
The result prolongs Brighton’s brilliant season so far and pushed them up to fourth on the Premier League table, while Leicester, with just one point from six matches, are three points adrift at the bottom of the table.

USWNT 4-0 Nigeria

0
The United States women’s national team defeated Nigeria 4-0 on Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City. The match was the first of a two-game series against Nigeria during the September window.
USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski inserted a starting lineup that featured a few changes from the Concacaf W Championship-winning squad over the summer, and the familiarly among the 11 players set the tone early as the USWNT found the back of the net three times in the opening half.
A massive injury never allowed Nigeria to establish itself as the U.S. cruised to victory. Lindsey Horan, Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith recorded goals for the Americans.

Time for Ruiz Jr vs Ortiz

0
Andy Ruiz Jr takes on Luis Ortiz tonight across the pond in the United States. The fight marks the Mexican’s second outing since dropping his WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles to Anthony Joshua in December 2019, George Glinski writes for Express.
Standing across from him will be two-time world title challenger Luis Ortiz. The Cuban veteran is past his best at 43 years old, but still carries the knockout power to make this one an intriguing contest.

In his last outing, he stopped former world champion Charles Martin back in January of this year and will have his eyes set on another world title shot as he attempts to close out his career in style. For Ruiz Jr, it is crucial that he wins and does so in a dominant fashion. A loss here could spell the end of his dreams of becoming a two-time heavyweight champion of the world.

Date and venue

The event is scheduled to take place in the early hours of Monday, September 5 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Ruiz Jr vs Ortiz will be shown live on FITE TV for UK fans with coverage starting from 2 am on Monday morning. The action will cost £12.99 and can be live streamed via the FITE TV app, which is available for download onto all good internet-connected devices including mobiles, tablets, and Smart TVs.

Ruiz Jr: “I’m feeling really good. The hard work has already paid off and now it’s just time to have fun on September 4. We’re going to let it all out in the ring. Me and Ortiz are coming to be champions, so you know it’s going to be a hell of a fight

European football round-up

Raphinha scored as Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-0 to keep the pressure on Real Madrid, who stayed top of La Liga by beating Real Betis; Olivier Giroud played his part in AC Milan beating rivals Inter in the derby; Bayern Munich drew at Union Berlin to surrender top spot in the Bundesliga, reports Sky Sports.

Raphinha scored his first Barcelona goal as the Catalans beat fellow LaLiga hotshots Sevilla 3-0 to move within two points of the top of the table.

The former Leeds winger opened the scoring for Barcelona in the first half and Robert Lewandowski doubled the advantage before the break, with that goal being the Polish striker’s fifth goal in four league games for his new club.

Barcelona put the result beyond any reasonable doubt five minutes after half-time with former Manchester City defender Eric Garcia making sure Xavi’s side continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with three wins and a draw in four matches.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid preserved their perfect start to the LaLiga season as they beat Betis 2-1 thanks to a second-half winner from Rodrygo at the Bernabeu on Saturday, keeping the defending Spanish and European champions at the top of the table.

Real struck first when David Alaba passed to Vinicius Jr with a magnificent long ball in the ninth minute, and the Brazilian raced forward and lobbed the ball over Betis ‘keeper Rui Silvas’ head.

Betis responded eight minutes later when Real Madrid academy alumni Sergio Canales smashed an equaliser in between Thibaut Courtois’s legs.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team fought back with a vengeance but missed several opportunities until they finally managed to break the deadlock in the 65th minute when Rodrygo thumped home a close-range finish from a Federico Valverde cross. Real Madrid now top the table on 12 points, the only team to win all of their first four games.

Giroud and Leao help Milan win the derby

Two goals by AC Milan forward Rafael Leao helped the defending champions fight back from a goal down and earn a 3-2 win over local rivals Inter on Saturday in their fifth Serie A match of the season.

Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic scored his first Serie A goal of the season in the 21st minute after an assist by forwarding Joaquin Correa.

Milan, however, levelled seven minutes later through forwarding Leao, who slotted home past Inter’s keeper Samir Handanovic after collecting a pass from Sandro Tonali.

Milan forward Olivier Giroud completed the comeback in the 54th minute with a weak but effective strike as it caught Handanovic unprepared, while Leao scored his second soon after by firing home in the 60th minute to extend the lead.

Inter did not go down without a fight and scored just seven minutes later through forwarding Edin Dzeko, whose strike bounced off the post and slipped in.

Milan tops the table on 11 points after five games and travel to Sampdoria next Saturday while Inter, fifth with nine points, host Torino on the same day.

Bayern draw to surrender the top spot

German champions Bayern Munich stumbled to their second 1-1 draw in a row on Saturday, coming away from Union Berlin with only the one point and dropping off the top of the Bundesliga table.

The Bavarians, who also drew 1-1 against Borussia Moenchengladbach last week and travel to Inter for their Champions League group opener next week, are third on 11 points, as many as Union.

The hosts, enjoying their best-ever Bundesliga start and looking for their first win over Bayern, were never intimidated by the champions and went in front through the league’s leading scorer Sheraldo Becker with a perfect volley at the far post. Their lead was short-lived, however, with Joshua Kimmich thundering a low drive into the far corner three minutes later.

Bayern came agonizingly close to a second goal in the 37th minute when Jamal Musiala weaved his way into the box and flicked a sensational ball to send Leroy Sane through, only for his shot to be blocked by ‘keeper Riis Ronnow.

Union’s solid back line, the second best in the league behind Bayern, hardly missed a beat and held firm in the second half as the visitors looked for ways past it.

Union’s Ronnow ensured that with a sensational save of his own, tipping a looping Sadio Mane header over the bar in stoppage time to protect their point.

Mbappe scores twice as PSG down Nantes

Kylian Mbappe scored either side of half-time as PSG beat 10-man Nantes 3-0 to remain top of Ligue 1.

France forward put the visiting champions in front midway through the first half, just six minutes before the home side saw former Manchester United full-back Fabio sent off for a dangerous challenge on Vitinha.

Mbappe doubled the lead nine minutes after half-time and Nuno Mendes added gloss on the scoreline. PSG are joint-top with Marseille but has a better goal difference.
