Update On Drew McIntyre’s WWE Absence

The Scottish Warrior has been absent from WWE since WrestleMania 39

Drew McIntyre

With Drew McIntyre having not been seen since WrestleMania 39 – all while questions remain over his WWE future – there’s now an update of sorts on the Scottish Warrior’s situation, Andrew Pollard writes for What Culture.

For those who missed it, McIntyre’s current WWE deal is due to expire towards the turn of the year. With the two-time WWE Champion said to be creatively and financially unhappy, Drew is in no immediate rush to pen any new contract.

In addition to those reports, the 37-year-old recently went “dark” on Twitter and removed all mentions of WWE. Throwing in further confusion, McIntyre was originally scheduled for last week’s SmackDown and even did local media interviews, before ultimately not being a part of that blue brand outing.

On this matter, the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio had Dave Meltzer note how McIntyre is not expected to be back in action for at least a few more weeks.

As Meltzer explained:

“He’s not going to be back at TV next week, he’s not going to be back for a couple more weeks. [WWE] announced the Madison Square Garden show, which is in July, and he was not announced for that show either, but that’s not necessarily… I was just told it’s a couple of more weeks, and we’ll see what happens from there. I mean, you know, there is an injury and there is a contract issue, although the contract issue… you know, again, his contract doesn’t come due for many, many months. But as far as singing a new deal, there’s nothing new; they’re still far apart.”

Where it pertains to an injury for McIntyre, no specifics are known at this time, though his body was said to be extremely beat up earlier in the year ahead of WrestleMania 39.

Of course, ‘Mania 39 saw Drew pinned by Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER in a triple-threat offering also featuring the Scot’s long-time pal Sheamus.

Jalen Hurts is NFL highest-paid player ever

Makes history with new Philadelphia Eagles contract

Jalen hurts: Eagles QB Hurts has 'chance' to play at Dallas | AP NewsJalen hurts: Eagles QB becomes the new NFL topmost earner

The Philadelphia Eagles have re-signed Jalen Hurts to a huge five-year extension, making him the most handsomely paid NFL player of all-time after a stunning season, Joseph McBride writes for The UK Mirror.

Jalen Hurts is now the highest paid player in NFL history after agreeing a huge five-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.

The Eagles and Hurts have agreed terms on a five-year, $255million (£182m) extension after a stunning season for the young quarterback. Hurts led the Eagles to the no.1 seed in the NFC last season, and was denied his first Super Bowl success after a stunning comeback from Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.

Hurts scored three rushing touchdowns in the Super Bowl, and the Eagles have made extending his deal a priority this offseason. The 24-year-old was a second-round draft pick in 2020, and has been rewarded for his stunning rise in the NFL.

he Eagles see Hurts as their future, and rightly so after proving to be one of the best up and coming stars in the NFL. Hurts has established himself as one of the best young talents, and was unlikely not to wrap up last season with a Super Bowl trophy.

It’s unlikely to be his last appearance, as Hurts and the Eagles are expected to compete for the foreseeable future. They’ve wasted little time in extending his deal, and the amount agreed is a clear statement for how confident they are in the 24-year-old.

Of the $255m (£182m), $179.3m (£145m) is guaranteed money, which sees him soar above Aaron Rodgers as the most well-paid quarterback in the league. The deal does put pressure on both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Chargers however, as Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow are awaiting extensions.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni even compared Hurts to Michael Jordan back in January, revealing just how highly he rates the quarterback. “It’s like having Michael Jordan out there,” Sirianni said. “He’s your leader. He’s your guy.

“That comparison is kind of in that aspect of it. Again, was I around Michael Jordan? No, but I was able to watch from afar when I was a kid, but then also you’re able to watch these documentaries and you see that common denominator of those things — the first thing you asked me about Jalen, I always talk about all those things, all the intangibles that he has.

“That’s where that’s coming from is just that will to win. It’s at a different level. He had that big chain on. What did it say? A breed of one. He’s a breed of one. That’s who he is. He’s unlike anybody I’ve been around just with how much he loves this game, how much winning drives him, how much getting better every day drives him, how much leading drives him. He’s special. He is a special dude.”

Teddy Atlas blasts boxer for being cowardly

Joe Joyce is punched by Zhilei Zhang
Joe Joyce vs Zhilei Zhang: British Joe Joyce left receiving end of Chinese Zhilei Zhang’s punishing punching

By Ed Emeanua

Legendary boxing trainer and fight commentator Teddy Atlas has inferenced that Anthony Joshua is chicken and avoiding a fight with heavy hitters to protect his easy-for-the-picking porcelain chin.

Atlas is betting on Joshua accepting to fight Joe Joyce now that the former interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight champion has just lost his title.

Responding on his official Twitter account, Atlas gave some uplifting words to Joyce, adding that it may now be easier for him to land a fight with the likes of Joshua following the loss.

“Silver lining in every dark cloud, and for Joyce it might be that this poor performance will now entice Joshua to fight him.”

“And if it does, you never know, if Joyce lands a right hand on that at times porcelain chin of Joshua, could be broken dishes.”

Joyce was a surprise loser to southpaw Zhilei Zhang in London last weekend, with the Chinese heavyweight fighter shocking the boxing world with his best career outing to capture the WBO interim world heavyweight title.

While weighing in on the likelihood of a future fight between Joyce and Joshua, Atlas, who once had Michael Tyson under his training stable, believes Joyce has the right arsenal to blowout Joshua.

However, Atlas says he’s backing the just beaten former interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) heavyweight champion to triumph against Joshua should they be matched up in the future.

Joyce went into the fray as a clear bookmakers’ favorite, with several boxing analysts believing that his endurance and punching power would be enough to extinguish the lights of his 39-year-old opponent.

However, ‘Big Bang’ proved them wrong, tying up his British foe in all kinds of Gordian knots right from the starting bell.

Zhang’s southpaw left failed to elude the big stationary target pose of Joyce, who was clearly dazed on many occasions all through the bout.

Joyce’s right eye was closed over by the Chinese heavyweight almost on the first ring of the bell and finally the harm got so bad that the doctor and referee had no choice but to stop the fight midway into the sixth round.

A rematch clause in the Zhang fight contract allows Joyce to ask for a second showdown with the Chines boxer, but the Brit covertly indicated in his post-fight interview that he may take an easier route in next fight date.

As for Joshua, he appears to have changed his mind on taking up three fights this year having said his next ring bout will happen in December.

Awoniyi, Dennis continue relegation free fall

Manchester United compound Steve Cooper’s problems  with a 2-0 defeat at City Ground

And….Antony scores yet again

By Ed Emeanua

Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis are slowly being dragged down to Championship level football next season as their Nottingham Forest side continue on a free fall on relegation lane after losing again to to Manchester United by a 1-0 scoreline at City Ground on Sunday.

Forest’s gallantry in the home game lasted till the 32′ when Anthony Martial ran into Forest’s box with intense swiftness to force Keylor Navas to react with a great save. This pressured the Costa Rican goalie to tip the ball straight into the path of Matheus dos Santos Antony, who in turn, rested the ball in the net.

Despite Forest losing the game, the difference between the winner and loser is so insignificant that it was hard to say which of the two sides was fighting for a European place and which was batting against relegation.

Scoreless in their three games against Man United this season, Nottingham Forest weren’t looking like a side that was eager to reverse that fortune until Awoniyi struck a clear chance to score wide of the mark on 44′.

The Nigerian forward continued to cause problems at the visitor’s end but failed to finish off any of his efforts before the break.

On 76′, yet in another passing move, Manchester United’s Antony connected with an advancing Diogo Dalot, who in turn drills his shot past Navas to seal the win for the visitors.

At the point of scoring the second goal, Manchester United had 19 shots with nine of them on target. On the other hand, Nottingham Forest had failed to test David De Gea in goal for the opponent even once from their six shots. That says a lot about the lack of form of the home team’s attacking end.

With ten minutes remaining, Emmanuel Dennis was extracted from the bench to replace Scott McKenna for Forest, but it was too late for the Nigerian attacker to make any significant impact.

Forest are left with just seven games remaining to save their season from their current perilous second placing from the bottom of the table.

Arsenal suspend Arteta new contract talk

To avoid distractions as Premier League shield pursuit loses momentum

Mikel Arteta pointing the way forward as several clubs focus their attention

By Ed Emeanua

According to The Sun, Arsenal have temporarily suspended contract talks with manager Mikel Arteta as the Gunners fend off any distractions in their chase for the league shield.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain are reported to be closely monitoring the Spaniard’s situation as uncertainty becloud the future of  Parisiennes boss Christophe Galtier, at the same time that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is a huge fan of Arteta’s enterprise at Arsenal.

Arteta played professionally for PSG and for Barcelona at youth level, and began his coaching career at Manchester City. The triad are now reported to harbor long term interest in the 41-year-old. His contract with Arsenal was signed very close to the conclusion of the previous season, and will come to an end in June 2025.

His Arsenal contract is estimated to fetch the coach a whopping £8.3million each year. Arteta’s work at the London club comes with immense praise, with his team now four points ahead of defending champions Manchester City atop of the Premier League table.

In his first season in charge, Arteta guided the Gunners to FA Cup cup win, despite shaky periods trailing the way, in addition to failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Notable plus for Arteta is the blend of Arsenal’s play with remarkable flair and transition, an accomplishment that will certainly align him with the interests of his many new suitors, though Arsenal are still very keen to retain him at the Emirates.

However, Arsenal’s main attention for now centers on the chase for the Premier League shield as they continue to nurse the hope of becoming champions again after 19 years of waiting.

West Ham’s grit hold Arsenal 2-2

Arsenal maintain lead but their clad iron grip on League shield chase loosens

By Ed Emeanua

Arsenal FC continued their steady but methodical pursuit of the English Premier League (EPL) shield this season, but relegation tormented West Ham United forced them to relent somewhat, after coming from two goals down to holdoff the league leaders in a pulsating 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal still tops the table with 4 points separating them and defending champions Manchester City, who still has a game to play.

Arsenal poured forward in an attacking spree from the start of the game, but it was the home side that had a shoutout for a likely hand to ball incident early on in the fast paced encounter.

West Ham had built up with neat passing around the edge of the box in a meticulous effort to breach Arsenal’s defense. Saïd Benrahma found the room in the 5th minute to send a tentative shot towards the goal line that hit Rob Holding’s arm but the central referee and VAR both ruled his arm was tucked in directly in front of his body, so, no foul.

The visitors were already two goals up within the first 10 minutes of the game to show their determination and tenacity to remain on top of the EPL table.

The match began to swing from one end to the other. As if in a rehash of how to yank a defenses apart, Arsenal’s Thomas Partey transitioned play, Bukayo Saka dribbled inside before teeing in a reverse pass into overlapping right back Ben White’s path. West Ham failed to track him and his play flashed across the box, finding Jesus for a simple tap-in for the first goal.

Then on the 10′, Gabriel Martinelli was allowed too much room and time to locate Martin Odegaard with a timed cross to the back-post which allowed him to guide in the ball past Łukasz Fabiański on the volley for the second goal.

The game then turned into a ding-dong affair. On 31′, Partey mysteriously gives the ball away very casually on the edge of the box, allowing Declan Rice to pounce and win the duel, before rolling his pass into the path of Lucas Paquetá who was brought down by Gabriel. The referee blew his whistle allowing VAR to check the incident allowing West Ham to get a deserved lifeline.

Benrahma stepped up for the spot kick, kept his cool and sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to tuck the ball into the bottom right corner, bringing the scores to 2-1.

In the second half, Martinelli’s close shot from a corner kick on 50′ struck Antonio’s arm for a penalty award but Saka skied his spot kick wide off the mark.

Then on 54′, Thilo Kehrer looped the ball into the box with Arsenal defense caught napping, allowing Jarrod Bowen to evade the offside trap and finishing with a first time shot past Ramsdale to tie the game 2-2.

Both sides pressed for the lead but mush share equal blames for spurning chances after chances to win the game.

THE BIG EVENT REPORT CARD

UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs Allen LIVE Coverage and Round by Round Updates - NY FIGHTS

By Ed Emeanua

When former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was pitted against Arnold Allen inside the UFC Mixed Martial Arts Octagon, most people knew something had to give.

The veteran American fighter was expected to put his vaunted prestige and pride on the line just as his opponent-the Englishman-had to stake his polished fighting winning streak with the undisputable right to brag for a title shot on the bargain.

UFC Fight Night results, highlights: Max Holloway turns away latest challenger Arnold Allen by decision - CBSSports.comThe Vicious elbow: Max Holloway lands big time on the jaw of  Arnold Allen with his elbow during the fight

Holloway did keep his date with Allen Saturday inside the Octagon at Fight Night in Kansas City as planned. When all was said and done, the veteran fighter managed to keep his pride and prestige, but the star rookie had to part ways with his 10-fight winning streak and chance for a title shot.

Holloway was declared victorious by unanimous decision after five rounds of blood and sweat letting for skillfully thwarting the bold style of his opponent. It marked the 23rd win in the UFC career of the former UFC featherweight champion and a dent in the opposition’s prospects of getting a shot at the featherweight crown.

Significantly, the loss extinguished the huge winning run of the Englishman in his best form, which had made him the proud owner of the fourth-lengthy winning stretch of all active UFC fighters. In so losing, it also wiped out the immense opportunity that came with the biggest win of Allen’s career, which was the second-round TKO of Calvin Kattar last October.

On the other hand, Holloway, 31, the top-ranked featherweight fighter and former unified titleholder, by the win notched his 23rd UFC victory, and earned him accolades as the man who handed the once indomitable Allen his first ever UFC defeat.

“Max is one of the best. He’s an inspiration to me – I love the man,” Allen said moments after the bout.

Holloway topped on all the cards with 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 after effectively neutralizing Allen’s aggression. The fight also made Holloway the first fighter in UFC history to achieve 3000 significant strikes.

Allen tried to up his ante as the fight went nearer the distance and delivered a cut under Holloway’s right eye, but it was too late for him to turn the battle around.

“Arnold hits like a truck. He got me in the last round and blackened my eye. My career is in jeopardy now because of you,” Holloway said.
“[The plan was] to keep tagging him. The dude’s durable, he wanted to go all the way, and I welcome that.
“Kansas, I love everybody here. But when this beast of a man [Allen] here takes the mic, cheer the man. He deserves it.”

Tips his AC Milan side to win the UEFA Champions League cup this summer

Official Statement: Fikayo Tomori | AC MilanFikayo Tomori hopes to win UEFA Champions League with AC Milan this term

By Rasheed Adewuyi

England defender Fikayo Tomori is eyeing an England recall while tipping his AC Milan FC to win the 2022/2023 UEFA Chanpions League competition this summer.

Tomori told BT Sports after Milan’ s 1-0 win over Napoli in the first leg quarter final match at the San Siro stadium on Wednesday that his club is in the competition to win, insisting Milan is not in the champions league just to make up the number.

“Whatever team we play in the knock out stage, we are ready to give our best. It was difficult at the preliminary rounds and I know it is going to be more difficult at this level of the competition because you’re going to play against the best” Fikayo told BT Sports.

“I am looking forward to the second leg against Napoli at the Diego Maradona stadium next week. I am very sure that it is going to be a tough match. We have been working hard and I believe we will qualify for the semi final.”

When asked if he thinks he can still play for the Three Lions , Fikayo said, ” I was disappointed not going to the World cup in Qatar. At the moment, I am not thinking about England. My focus is on how to help Milan win the Champions league.

Fikayo explained that his Milan experience has improved his game tremendously and he strongly believes he would play for England sooner than later.

“Gareth Southgate has been keeping in touch with me. He called me few weeks ago and told me to keep the good work going and that shows that he would give me the chance to return to the England national team.

AC Milan have won the Champions League seven times, carting home the title in season 1962/63, 1968/69, 1988/89, 1993/94, 2022/03 ,and 2006/07.

It will be recalled that Tomori was snubbed by England boss Southgate for the December 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar making him still eligible to represent Canada and Nigeria by virtue of parental ties.

Iheanacho’s goal fails to deliver Leicester

Leicester slumps further down in the relegation zone with a 3-1 loss to Man City

Leicester City attacker Kelechi Iheanacho scored Saturday for Leicester City against his former club in a 4-0 drubbing by Manchester City FC at the Etihad but that was not enough to earn his relegation hounded team a relegation struggle reprieve.

Leicester drifted 3-0 until Iheanacho reduced the scoreline in the 75th minute on a somewhat calamitous day for standby manager Dean Smith, whose side now lie second from bottom on the Premier League ladder with 25 points from 31 games in their difficult struggle against relegation.

Despite that awful placing, they are just two points outside the safe zone and can still bail themselves out from the dire straits, but must first find the right form.

Iheanacho was unlucky not to add a second when his shot beat goalie Ederson de Moraes of Man City but was repelled by the upright around the 84th minute.

The Nigeria forward was a substitute in the game but compatriot Wilfred Ndidi was a substituted started in the encounter.

With the victory, Manchester City rose inside three points of surprise Premier League leaders Arsenal. John Stones was the unlikely fifth minute goal scorer off an awesome shot from 22 yards .

The second for City was from a penalty kick that was awarded after Jack Grealish’s shot struck Ndidi’s hand.

Erling Haaland concerted the spot kick to score his 31st Premier League goal in his first English football season.

The Man City striker then went on to score the third goal with the assistance of Kevin de Bryune to continue his sublime run.

Napoli without Osimhen isn’t the same

As Verona easily holds Serie A table toppers 0-0 without influential their Nigeria international forward

Simone Verdi of Hellas Verona aims at goal from a freekick against Napoli FC at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday

It is increasingly evident that manager Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli FC maybe a far from the finished product without influential Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen.

Napoli continues on their stretch of poor form in recent matches as struggling visiting Hellas Verona easily fended off the Gli Azzurri (The Blues) to a scoreless stalemate at the awe inspiring Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Saturday.

Nigerian bomber Osimhen, who is recovering from injury layoff since the end of the last international break rejoined the team for the Verona encounter but was forced to watch most of the the action from the substitute bench.

The Nigeria international forward last played competitively for Napoli March 19 scoring twice in his side’s 4-0 of annihilation of midtable Torino in a Serie fixture before heading for Nigeria for international engagements only to return nursing an injury.

Three games in Osimhen’s absence later, Napoli has only won once (1-0 against Lecce) in their April 7 Serie A faceoff, and lost twice to rivals, AC Milan (0-4 in Serie A on April 2nd and 0-1 on April 12th in a UCL quarter finals tie).

Though, still occupying the top spot on Serie A table, Napoli has now lost some ground to distant second placed Lazio, who shrunk the Partenopei (The Parthenopeans) 18 points lead down to 13 in Osimhen’s absence.

The Nigerian was subbed in for Giacomo Rapadori in the 71st minute against Verona and was almost on target but for his shot being repelled by the woodwork in the 83rd minute.

However, it was too, little too late for the Serie A leaders as Verona managed to hold on to what might yet be a very important point in their fight to avoid relegation.
