African Games: Nigeria leads Athletics events

Records less podium appearances in the event than Kenya but has won more gold medals than the rest

Nigeria is the leader of the Athletics event of the ongoing African Games in Ghana having made the category’s event podium a total of 11 times.

 

The country has recorded less podium appearances in the event than Kenya but has won more gold medals than the rest.

 

Nigeria’s eleven medals in Athletics breaks down to sven golds, two silvers and two bronze medals. Athletics powerhouse Ethiopia are the main opposition to Nigeria’s dominance in the event with a close second placement.

 

Ethiopian Athletes have raked in the total of 10 medals in the category comprising five golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.

Kenya has recorded more podium appearances that any team in the Athletics events of the Ghana games with 13 medals but with fewer gold medals to Nigeria and Ethiopia.

 

Kenya has won four golds, fiver silvers, and five bronze medals at the ongoing games.

 

Nigerai tops the medals table by virtue of the singles golden podium appearances of OKEZIE Chidi Anthony (Men’s 400M, ENEKWECHI Chukwuebuka (Men’s Shot Put), AMUSAN Oluwatobiloba (Women’s 100M Hurdles), and USORO Ruth (Women’s Triple Jump).

 

NIGERIA has also won two gold medals in the Team events-Men’s 4x100m Relay, and the Mixed 4x400m Relay-at the Games in Ghana.

 

AMUSAN was victorious in Brazzaville 2015, Rabat 2019, and on Thurday at Accra 2023. Nigeria’s world record holder in Women’s 100M Hurdles stretches her intimidating feat of sole Woman to have won the event more than twice.

 

The Nigerian star was determined by the likelihood of disqualification after suffering a false-start at the initial start of the race.
