Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday during their second match of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, CAFonline reports.

Despite dominating large parts of the game, Nigeria failed to break through Rwanda’s disciplined defense, extending their unbeaten record against the Amavubi to six games.

Coming off an impressive 3-0 win over Benin Republic, expectations were high for the Super Eagles to continue their strong start in the qualifiers.

Coach Austin Eguavoen made only one change to the starting lineup, replacing Alex Iwobi with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, while top scorer Victor Osimhen began the game on the bench.

Nigeria took control early, with Ademola Lookman being the most dangerous outlet. The Atalanta forward thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 22nd minute, only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

His chance came after Victor Boniface had rattled the upright with a thunderous strike, but the rebound couldn’t be converted.

The first half ended without a goal, and Eguavoen made two changes at halftime, introducing Osimhen and Moses Simon to add firepower.

However, Rwanda, buoyed by the presence of President Paul Kagame in the stands, defended resolutely.

Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was in superb form, making several crucial saves, including a last-minute effort from Osimhen’s header to keep the score level.

Nigeria continued to pile on the pressure but could not find a decisive breakthrough.

Despite the dropped points, the Super Eagles remain top of Group D with four points, while Rwanda sits in second with two.

Nigeria will host Libya in their next qualifier in October, hoping to return to winning ways.

CAFonline reports that Senegal secured a vital 1-0 victory against Burundi in their second match of the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Monday.

Playing at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi, Teranga Lions faced a well-organized Burundian side but managed to clinch the win thanks to a second-half penalty from Ismaïla Sarr.

Burundi began the game strongly, applying pressure in the opening minutes, but Senegal soon found their rhythm.

Sadio Mané and his teammates dominated possession, recording 21 shots compared to Burundi’s two.

Despite their control, the 2021 AFCON champions struggled to break down the resilient Burundian defense, with several efforts going wide or being blocked.

The best chance of the first half came when Mané’s tight-angle shot was saved by Burundian goalkeeper Mattéo Nkurunziza. However, the breakthrough remained elusive, leaving the game goalless at halftime.

Early in the second half, Nicolas Jackson missed a golden opportunity to give Senegal the lead, failing to capitalize on an open goal.

Burundi responded with a dangerous chance of their own, as Jean Claude Girumugisha attempted a lob over goalkeeper Edouard Mendy but narrowly missed the target.

The decisive moment came in the 71st minute when Sadio Mané was fouled in the box by a high foot from a Burundian defender.

Although Mané was keen to take the penalty himself, it was Ismaïla Sarr who stepped up and confidently slotted home, putting Senegal ahead.

Senegal pushed for a second goal but were unable to extend their lead, with Nkurunziza pulling off crucial saves. Despite the narrow win, Senegal now tops Group L with four points, while Burundi remains second with three.
