Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was handed a cameo start at City Ground in “The Reds” 3-0 defeat by visiting Chelsea Saturday.

Joshua Kofi Acheampong headed Chelsea ahead on 49′ only for Pedro Neto to double ‘The Blues’ on 52′ and Reece James adding security on 84′.

For the sixth match this season, another Chelsea or manager was sent packing. Malo Gusto was issued his marching orders-a red card on 87′.

In a match whose major aftermath was the sacking of Manager Ange Postecoglou after only 39 days in charge, the Nigeria international could not have asked for less.

Postecoglou, hired by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis on September 29, now becomes the manager with shortest reign in the Premier League.

He is just a day short of Les Reed’s 40-day stint with Charlton Athletic in 2006 which spanned out between November 14 to December 24.

Awoniyi’s start in Postecoglou’s last match in charge saw the Nigerian prosper to his first 45 minutes of action in the current Premier League season.

Awoniyi gave way at halftime to Igor Jesus a 46th minute substitute for the Super Eagles striker.

The cameo appearance was his first this League season with his only other listing in Forest lineup being on August 17, 2025 against Brentford in which he was on the bench.

Awoniyi’s presence on the pitch on Saturday was eventful for his side as his involvement added his physicality accounting for all the first half spark for Forest.

The Nigerian was freed up by a defensive mix up by Chelsea backline in the early minutes of the tie only to succumb to pressure stretching his short awfully wide of the Chelsea post.

In another superb moment, his pass sent Morgan Gibbs-White clear only for the Forest support striker to blaze his shot into the sky.
