The maiden Nigerian Sports Journalists in Diaspora (NSJID) media awards for Sports Journalists in Nigeria have been estimated to gulp one million Naira.

In a press statement signed by the president of the body, Mr. Gbenga Bakare, NSJID wants the country’s media to start focusing on local sports news to stimulate interest in home sports among fans and followers like it used to be.

According to the statement, NSJID is worried about Nigeria’s dwindling standard of local sports reporting and urgently wants to stem the terrible slide.

The winners, first, second and third positions, would be identified at the end of every quarter, starting from January 2023.

The statement also stated that the media house that covers most local sports news would win the annual award.

Sam John,  Ikeddy Isiguzo,  Gboyega Okegbenro Sani Zaria, John Atale, Sam Femi Fasetire, and a lady to be named have been tasked to pick the winners of the awards.

“It would be our utmost dream if we can bring back the glorious 1980s and 1990s when our sports had the most vibrant media coverage “, Bakare added.
