Though the Nigerian Professional abridged league is a child of necessity but its format will not lead to the development of football.

Jimoh Bashir, Kwara United FC media officer who made this disclosure in in an interview with Sports Joust stated that the setup of the Professional league in Nigeria does not conform with the leagues in other parts of the world.

Bashir added: “Most club owners don’t want this format.”

Football club owners Association of Nigeria, in a statement signed by its chairman Barr Isaac Danladi and the executive secretary Alloy Chukwuemeka recently, described the Nigerian abridged league as a caricature.

However, Bashir said that Kwara United is ready to break the jinx that has dogged them every season by winning the elusive league title.

Kwara state football outfit-Kwara United FC-is sure their state government’s 300 million Naira generosity will help them secure the league trophy this year.

Bashir said: “The tremendous support from the state government, the caliber of players we signed, and the motivation from our die-hard fans are the reasons we are confident that the jinx will be broken this year.

“The Thirty million and four hundred naira monthly subvention and other special allocations from the government will go a long way to help us achieve our goal.

“Though we have twenty teams in the league, and almost all of them are planning to win the coveted trophy, but Kwara United will emerge the winner at the end of the competition.

Kwara United represented Nigeria in the CAF Confederation cup last season. They lost to RSB Berkane FC of Morocco on the away goal rule in the first round of the competition.

Kwara United will host Gombe United at the Adamasingba stadium in Ibadan on Sunday in their season’s opening game. Akwa United lost 0-2 to Bendel Insurance FC of Benin last weekend.
