Their only previous AFCON meeting came at the 1980 finals, when hosts Nigeria opened their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Tanzania in Lagos on 8 March 1980, going on to win their first continental title.

Overall, the teams have met seven times across all competitions, with Nigeria unbeaten, winning four matches and drawing three.

Their most recent encounters came in qualifying for the 2017 AFCON, drawing 0–0 in Dar es Salaam on 5 September 2015 before Nigeria won 1–0 in Uyo on 3 September 2016. Egypt would qualify ahead of both teams.

Nigeria goalkeeper Amas Obasogie currently plays his club football in Tanzania for Singida Black Stars, where he is a teammate of Hussein Masalinga and Khalid Iddi.

Samatta, Msuva headline Tanzania’s TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 squad

Tanzania coach Miguel Gamondi has announced his final 28-man squad for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, confirming the group that will attempt to guide the Taifa Stars out of the tournament’s group stage for the first time in their history.

The squad, revealed after an earlier provisional list, blends key overseas-based players with a strong core from Simba SC, Young Africans and Azam FC.

Tanzania, making their fourth appearance at the continental finals, have been drawn into a demanding Group A alongside Nigeria, Tunisia and regional rivals Uganda.

The biggest headline is the presence of captain Mbwana Samatta, who returns to lead the side after rediscovering his form with French Ligue 1 club Le Havre.

Experienced forward Simon Msuva, now playing in Iraq, is also included after featuring in the provisional squad.

Gamondi said when unveiling his preliminary list that his priority was to build a “strong, well-balanced side” capable of competing with Africa’s best, emphasizing his intention to rely heavily on locally based players who understand Tanzanian football’s identity.

The final selection also reflects that philosophy. Several standout performers from the Tanzanian Premier League — including Feisal Salum, Pascal Msindo, Yakoub Suleiman and Mohammed Hussein — have been retained, while young talents such as Kelvin Nashon and Novatus Dismas also make the squad.

Defender Haji Mnoga, who plays for Salford City in England, is among the most notable overseas inclusions.

His experience at the 2023 AFCON adds valuable continuity to a defence that struggled at the last edition but showed improvement during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Taifa Stars collected their highest-ever AFCON points tally in 2023 despite exiting at the group stage, and Gamondi, who replaced Hemed Suleiman earlier, has called on his side to “push to get results in every game” as they chase a historic knockout-stage appearance.

Tanzania open their AFCON campaign against Nigeria on 23 December before facing Uganda four days later and concluding the group phase against Tunisia on 30 December.

Eric Chelle casts wide net for TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has announced a 54-man preliminary squad for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, signalling fierce competition for places as the Super Eagles prepare for this month’s tournament in Morocco.

The Franco-Malian manager has opted for depth across every position, inviting established internationals, long-term absentees and a wave of newcomers as he assesses his final options.

Under CAF regulations, Chelle must reduce the group to a maximum of 28 players before the tournament begins on 21 December.

Nigeria, runners-up in Ivory Coast last year and seeking their first continental title since 2013, will compete in Group D alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.

A wide-ranging squad — and two injured players included

Nigeria’s extended list features 6 goalkeepers, 13 defenders, 12 midfielders and 23 forwards, one of the largest preliminary squads the country has ever named for an AFCON campaign.

While the goalkeeping department contains no major surprises, the defensive selection has drawn attention.

Felix Agu and Ola Aina, both expected to miss the tournament through injury, are nonetheless included — a decision that has raised eyebrows among supporters and pundits.

Chelle’s key defensive leaders, including William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, all return to anchor the back line.

They are joined by emerging defenders Ryan Alebiosu, Adeleke Adekunle, Emmanuel Michael and Igoh Ogbu, who has enjoyed a strong year in Europe.

Goalkeepers: established names and a rise for 16-year-old Harcourt

he goalkeeping unit will be headed by Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie, with Francis Uzoho also recalled.

The most notable inclusion is 16-year-old Ebenezer Harcourt, whose selection underlines Chelle’s desire to expand Nigeria’s long-term options between the posts.

He joins Adebayo Adeleye as part of a six-man unit from which only three are expected to make the final squad.

Midfield balance and new talent breaking through

Nigeria’s midfield options continue to offer stability and familiarity.

Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika remain central to Chelle’s tactical plans, providing experience and composure.

They are joined for the first time by promising youngsters Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Tochukwu Nnadi and Peter Agba, while Christantus Uche and Usman Muhammed also earn call-ups after impressing in Europe and the domestic league.

Brothers Tom and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru feature together in the squad for the first time.

An overflowing forward line led by Osimhen and Lookman

The attack — Nigeria’s strongest and most competitive department — is headlined by two African Footballer of the Year winners: Victor Osimhen (2023) and Ademola Lookman (2024).

They are joined by an exceptionally deep forward pool that includes Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Boniface, Paul Onuachu, Taiwo Awoniyi, Terem Moffi, Chidera Ejuke, Akor Adams, Nathan Tella and others pushing for final selection.

Chelle has also opened the door for new attacking prospects: Philip Otele, Salim Fago, Rafiu Durosinmi, Ikwuemesi Chukwubuikem, Ekeson Okorie and Chisom Orji, each hoping to force their way into the final 28.

The size of the attacking list — 23 forwards — underscores both Nigeria’s depth and the difficult decisions ahead for Chelle.

Super Eagles face pressure and expectation in Morocco

After reaching the final in Cote d’Ivoire in the last edition, Nigeria enter AFCON 2025 with high expectations from supporters and analysts alike.

Chelle’s expansive preliminary list reflects both the depth of talent available and the challenges of building cohesion ahead of a demanding group stage.

The weeks ahead will determine who earns a place in the final 28. For now, Nigeria’s AFCON journey begins with the biggest selection battle the squad has seen in years.

Zimbabwe’s Warriors, Carrying Nation’s hope

0

Some teams arrive with more than just sporting ambitions, but not Zimbabwe

At every Africa Cup of Nations, some teams arrive with more than just sporting ambitions. Zimbabwe are among those who step onto the continental stage carrying the hopes, pride and voice of an entire nation, writes CAFonline.

Nicknamed the Warriors, the Zimbabwean players embody the fighting spirit and resilience that define their country. Their qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 represents far more than a place at Africa’s biggest football event. It marks a new chapter, a sense of renewal and a powerful source of unity for a nation eager to be represented with pride.

Built on a blend of home-based talent and players competing abroad, the squad draws strength from a clear identity rooted in solidarity, discipline and determination. Every match, every effort and every sacrifice is driven by the awareness that they represent more than a jersey — they carry a flag, a history and the expectations of millions.

As one of the most experienced figures in the team, goalkeeper Washington Arubi understands the weight of that responsibility.

“Wearing the Zimbabwe jersey means carrying the hope of the whole country. We know where we come from and what this AFCON represents for our people. Every minute on the pitch, we will play it for them,” he said.

That mindset is shared across the squad, where collective ambition outweighs individual recognition. Another senior international underlined the significance of the moment:

“We are not playing only for ourselves. We are playing for those who came before us and for the next generation dreaming of wearing this shirt. AFCON is our opportunity to show the true face of Zimbabwe.”

For Zimbabwe, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is an opportunity to test themselves against the continent’s finest, but also to reaffirm football’s power as a source of hope and togetherness. From the streets of Harare to the wider diaspora, the Warriors have become a symbol — a link between people, passion and national pride.

As the tournament approaches, one thing is certain: Zimbabwe are not coming simply to take part. They are coming to honor their journey, defend their colours and ensure that the voice of a nation is heard once again, through the rhythm and resolve of its Warriors.

AFCON 2025: Morocco on winning start

Díaz and El Kaabi fire Atlas Lions to victory in 2025 TotalEnergies opening game

  • Clinical Morocco make winning start with second-half goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi.
  • Comoros frustrate hosts for long spells, defending deep and with discipline before eventually conceding.
  • Group A leaders after opening night, as the Atlas Lions take early control of their AFCON 2025 campaign.

Morocco began their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025 campaign with a controlled 2–0 victory over Comoros in front of a capacity crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday night, reports CAFonline.

Second-half goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi were enough to settle a contest that proved far more demanding than the scoreline suggested, as the hosts were forced to remain patient against a resilient Comorian side determined to spoil the party.

Morocco dominated possession from the outset, circulating the ball with confidence and pinning Comoros deep inside their own half. Yet clear chances were scarce early on, with the visitors defending compactly and contesting every duel.

The first warning came inside five minutes when Selemani pounced on a loose touch in the Moroccan box, reminding the hosts of the fine margins on opening night.

The Atlas Lions thought they had an early breakthrough when Brahim Díaz burst into the area and won a penalty, but Yannick Pandor guessed correctly to deny Soufiane Rahimi from the spot.

That miss briefly unsettled the hosts, who continued to probe through set pieces and crosses, with Ismaël Saibari heading narrowly wide and Azzedine Ounahi testing the Comorian goalkeeper from range.

Morocco’s first half was further disrupted by the early injury to captain Romain Saïss, who was forced off following a heavy collision.

Despite their territorial control, Walid Regragui’s side went into the interval level, frustrated by a well-drilled Comorian back line.

The breakthrough finally arrived ten minutes after the restart. A sweeping move down the left ended with Noussair Mazraoui drilling a low cross into the box, where Brahim Díaz arrived with perfect timing to guide a composed finish beyond Pandor and ignite celebrations inside the stadium.

With the pressure lifted, Morocco played with greater freedom. Comoros continued to battle, but gaps began to appear.

The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute when Ayoub El Kaabi, introduced to add cutting edge, produced a moment of brilliance — meeting a delivery from Salah-Eddine with an acrobatic overhead kick that left the goalkeeper rooted and sealed the points.

From there, the hosts managed the game with maturity, slowing the tempo and limiting Comoros to half-chances as the clock ticked down.

It was not a flamboyant display, but it was an efficient one — exactly the kind of performance expected from a tournament favourite.

The victory sends Morocco top of Group A ahead of the meeting between Mali and Zambia, while Comoros leave Rabat encouraged by their organization but still searching for a breakthrough moment on the continental stage.

Angélique Kidjo to unveil Morocco 2025

Jaylann and L’Artiste to unveil TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 official song at opening ceremony

As Africa prepares for the kick-off of its biggest football spectacle, music will take centre stage alongside the game itself, with Jaylann, L’Artiste and Angélique Kidjo set to perform the official song of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 at the opening ceremony.

The song, whose title will be revealed during the live performance, will be unveiled ahead of the tournament’s opening match between hosts Morocco and Comoros on Sunday, 21 December, marking the formal start of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025.

This year’s anthem brings together three distinct musical worlds: the emerging Moroccan pop scene, global urban sounds shaped in Europe, and the deep-rooted African rhythms that have travelled the world for decades.

Angélique Kidjo: a global African icon
Few artists embody African cultural influence on the world stage like Angélique Kidjo. The Beninese singer, songwriter and activist is a five-time Grammy Award winner and one of Africa’s most celebrated musical exports.

Across a career spanning more than three decades, Kidjo has fused traditional African music with funk, jazz, R&B and Latin influences, collaborating with global stars while remaining firmly anchored in African identity. Beyond music, she is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, using her platform to advocate for education, women’s rights and cultural preservation.

Her involvement brings historical weight and global credibility to the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 anthem, reinforcing the tournament’s status as a continental event with worldwide reach.

L’Artiste: bridging Africa, Europe and the global charts

Born Youssef Akdim, L’Artiste has established himself as one of the most recognisable French-Moroccan artists of the last decade. Rising to prominence with the hit Maestro in 2016, he went on to deliver a string of international successes including Clandestino, Missile – Acte II, Chocolat and Ciao Amigo.

His 2019 album Quartier Latin, featuring the global hit Peligrosa with Karol G, cemented his crossover appeal, while later projects showcased a more reflective and personal side.

L’Artiste’s inclusion gives the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 anthem a contemporary urban edge, connecting African football to global youth culture and international audiences.

Jaylann: Morocco’s new voice on a continental stage

Representing the host nation and a new generation of African artists, Jaylann brings a fresh and youthful sound to the project.

The Moroccan singer has risen rapidly through the urban and pop music scene, earning attention for his modern production style and strong digital following. His recent releases have resonated strongly with younger audiences, positioning him as one of Morocco’s most promising contemporary voices.

Performing the official TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 song on home soil places Jaylann at the heart of a moment that blends national pride with continental celebration.

AFCON 2025 kicks off with French Montana, RedOne, and others lighting up opening ceremony in Rabat

The 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations gets under way tonight (Sunday) in Morocco with three global music stars taking centre stage at the opening ceremony, as African football’s flagship tournament launches with a spectacle designed to capture the imagination of audiences around the world.

Moments before hosts Morocco face Comoros in the tournament’s opening match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, French Montana, Davido and RedOne will headline the ceremony’s flagship performance, titled “Le Show”.

The performance is expected to be one of the most visually striking opening moments in AFCON history, combining music, light, movement and symbolism in a carefully choreographed display aimed at a global television audience stretching far beyond the continent.

Three artists, three worlds

French Montana, born in Morocco and raised in the United States, brings global hip-hop influence and diaspora identity to the opening night.

One of the most recognizable African-born artists on the international rap scene, his presence reflects Morocco’s role as host and a cultural bridge between Africa and the wider world.

Davido arrives as one of Africa’s most influential musical figures of the modern era. The Nigerian Afrobeats star has helped carry African music onto the world’s biggest stages, with a sound associated with celebration, confidence and continental pride, qualities CAF believes mirror the spirit of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Completing the trio is RedOne, the Moroccan-born producer whose work has shaped global pop music across continents. His inclusion underlines Africa’s creative reach behind the scenes, linking African identity with international audiences through sound and production.

“Le Show” will unfold as a dynamic visual narrative, with the three artists converging at centre stage amid pulsing lights, drums and digital displays. The performance is designed to reflect unity, diversity and movement, themes central to AFCON 2025’s message.

The opening ceremony will serve as a cultural statement as much as a sporting one, projecting African creativity and confidence to millions watching worldwide.

A month of football across Morocco

Tonight’s ceremony marks the start of a month-long tournament running until 18 January, featuring 24 national teams competing across six host cities: Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, Fez and Agadir.

With nine stadiums in use and Morocco hosting the finals for the first time since 1988, AFCON 2025 is being framed as one of the most ambitious editions of the competition, combining elite football with cultural storytelling on a continental scale.

As the first ball is kicked later tonight, Africa’s biggest football celebration begins not only with goals and competition, but with music, identity and a message designed to resonate far beyond the pitch.

Played out before a sold-out capacity crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium and watched by millions on television across the globe, the ceremony unfolded moments before hosts Morocco faced Comoros in the tournament’s opening match.

It offered a vivid reminder that AFCON is as much a cultural showcase as it is a sporting contest.

The ceremony opened with a calm yet evocative musical sequence, fusing African rhythms with traditional Moroccan sounds.

Performers moved in carefully choreographed patterns across a pitch transformed by color and light, reflecting the continent’s diversity and football heritage.

A central figure carrying a football-shaped map symbolized Africa’s unity, while Amazigh-inspired music underscored Morocco’s identity and deep historical roots.

Visual projections drew inspiration from Moroccan zellige patterns and artisanal crafts, while giant screens showcased everyday life, education, landscapes and iconic cities including Fez, Casablanca and Marrakech.

One of the most emotional moments came with a rendition of Allah Ya Moulana, immortalized by legendary Moroccan group Nass El Ghiwane, anchoring the spectacle in cultural memory.

Music took centre stage as global stars French Montana, Davido, L’Artiste and Jaylann delivered uplifting performances that energized the crowd and resonated with international audiences, reinforcing AFCON’s growing global appeal.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, opening his address with “Assalamu Alaikum”, thanked King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, the Moroccan government and people, as well as Moroccan FA president Fouzi Lekjaa, for their role in bringing the tournament to life.

He hailed Morocco’s passion for football and declared the competition officially open in the presence of the FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The presence of Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, who officially inaugurated the competition alongside Motsepe and Infantino, added ceremonial weight to the evening.

The Comoros President Azali Assoumani was also in attendance, highlighting the continental significance of the occasion.

As fireworks faded and the stadium roared, AFCON 2025 was formally launched — not just as a football tournament, but as a celebration of African identity, culture and unity.

With matches set to be staged across six Moroccan cities until January 18, the continent’s biggest sporting event could scarcely have asked for a more fitting opening.

About

Political and administrative capital of Morocco, Rabat will host several matches of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025. Located on the Atlantic coast, where the Bouregreg River meets the ocean, it blends heritage, modernity, and sporting passion.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, the city has nearly 1.8 million residents and is admired for its quality of life. Four stadiums will host matches: Stade Moulay Abdellah, Stade Moulay Hassan, Stade Al Barid, and the new Olympic Stadium.

Founded in the 12th century by the Almohads, Rabat was long a political and military centre before becoming the institutional heart of Morocco. The Royal Palace, Parliament, and embassies highlight its status, but the city remains lively with its medina and the Kasbah of the Oudayas. Its colourful alley ways, markets, and beaches make it a capital that is both modern and deeply connected to its roots.

Football in Rabat

Fath Union Sport (FUS)—Moroccan champion in 2016 and CAF Confederation Cup winner in 2010—embodies Rabat’s sporting vitality.

AS FAR, multiple national champion and winner of the 1985 CAF Champions League, remains a continental giant.  Stade Marocain (1919), Hilal, Union de Touarga, and Youssoufia Club complete this rich footballing landscape.

In 2025, the opening of the FIFA Central Office for Africa at the Mohammed VI Complex will further reinforce this role.

Getting Around Rabat

Rabat has a modern transport network combining tramway, buses, and train stations (Rabat-Ville, Rabat-Agdal).

The Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier to Casablanca via the capital. Rabat-Salé Airport, 15 km from the city centre, offers connections to Europe and Africa.

What to visit in Rabat?

The 2025 footballing showpiece of the African homeland is here and the continent is as expected agog with fanfare and excitement.

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 kicks off this Sunday at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, with the opening match pitting the host nation, Morocco against Comoros.

For the Atlas Lions, the moment has arrived to begin a tournament they are determined to win on home soil, driven by a crowd firmly behind them. The stadium is ready. So is the atmosphere.

For weeks, Morocco have been meticulously preparing for this occasion CAFonline reports.

Morocco – Walid Regragui

A symbol of modern African coaching, Walid Regragui carries the weight of expectation on home soil. World Cup history-maker in 2022, his mission is clear: deliver Morocco’s first AFCON title since 1976 in front of a nation united behind him.

Head coach Walid Regragui and his technical staff have worked on all fronts, both tactical and physical. Managing the absentees and fitness concerns of key players such as Achraf Hakimi, Hamza Igamane and Sofyan Amrabat has shaped the final adjustments.

Comoros, meanwhile, arrive without excessive pressure but with clear ambition. Stefano Cusin’s side has had limited time to prepare collectively, but each training session has been used to strengthen team cohesion. Considered outsiders on paper, the Coelacanths are determined to defend their chances and to show that they belong on the continental stage.

Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah.

What Was Said

Walid Regragui underlined the importance of preparation and mindset within his squad.

“We have been working for two years. It will be a big day, at home. Our objective has always been to win the AFCON and to give everything. Our supporters are with us,” said the national team coach.

He also addressed the situation of Achraf Hakimi:“He may start, or he may not. Every match is important. We will have to manage emotions and play with confidence and humility.”

On the Comoros side, Stefano Cusin expressed his pride ahead of this historic occasion. “It is an exceptional opportunity to showcase our country and our team. Morocco are extremely competitive, with or without Hakimi. We are looking for the right balance between defence and attack,” he explained.

Youssouf M’Changama echoed those sentiments: “Playing in the opening match is a great source of pride. We want to continue raising the level of Comorian football.”
