FIA hammer falls on Max Verstappen

Red Bull driver punished by F1’s governing body over press conference language

Max Verstappen has been punished by F1’s governing body, the FIA, for using bad language during Thursday’s press conference in Singapore, with the Red Bull driver now obliged “to accomplish some work of public interest,” F1 reports.

Verstappen was summoned to the stewards after swearing in the pre-weekend conference, with the panel reviewing the audio transcript and hearing from the driver and Red Bull team representatives before reaching their decision.

“It is the policy of the FIA to ensure that language used in its public forums, such as press conferences, meets generally accepted standards for all audiences and broadcasts,” read the stewards’ document.

“In particular this is true of statements made by participants in the World Championships and thus being role models both inside and outside the sport.

“This is clear in the regulations of the FIA and has been reinforced through previous cases brought before the Stewards in Formula One, in particular in Las Vegas in 2023.

“The Stewards reviewed the transcript of the FIA Thursday Driver Press Conference in Singapore and Max Verstappen, driver of car 1, used language to describe his car at the Event in Azerbaijan which is generally considered ‘coarse, rude’ or may ‘cause offense’ and is not considered suitable for broadcast.

“This is ‘Misconduct’ as defined in Art 20 of the International Sporting Code, and is a breach of Art 12.2.1.k.

“The Stewards noted that the language was not directed at anyone or any group. When summoned to the Stewards the driver explained that the word used is ordinary in speech as he learned it, English not being his native language.

“While the Stewards accept that this may be true, it is important for role models to learn to be mindful when speaking in public forums, in particular when not under any particular pressure. Verstappen apologized for his behavior.

“The Stewards note that significant fines have been levied for language offensive to or directed at specific groups. This is not the case here.

“But, as this topic has been raised before and is well known by the competitors, the Stewards determined to order a greater penalty than previously and that Verstappen be ‘obliged to accomplish some work of public interest’ (Art. 12.4.1.d of the International Sporting Code), in coordination with the Secretary General for Sport of the FIA.”

Verstappen heads into the Marina Bay weekend with a 59-point advantage over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, while Red Bull are now second to McLaren – and 20 points adrift – in the constructors’ battle.

Josh Kelly versus Ishamel Davis

Tony Bellew gives his verdict on intriguing clash

The pair meet on Saturday, Christopher Walker reports for DAZN.

Ishmael Davis has a huge opportunity against Josh Kelly this weekend, but Tony Bellew believes the fight may be coming to quickly for him.

The Liverpool man, a former world champion at cruiserweight, is a huge admirer of Davis’ potential, but he’s not sure he’s had enough preparation time for what is the biggest fight of his career.

Davis has replaced Liam Smith at less than a week’s notice and he’ll be hoping he can cause a shock when he goes in with Kelly.

The Sunderland man possesses plenty more experience thanks to his extensive amateur background, and Bellew thinks that the 2016 Olympian might just know a bit too much at this stage.

“Before i speak about the fight, a big well done to Ishmael Davis for backing himself,” said Bellew when speaking exclusively to DAZN.

“Chances like this, to fight on a huge show at Wembley, don’t come around often so Davis has to make the most of it because it might be his only shot.

“I like Davis as a fighter and I think he’s got a bright future, but this is the type of fight where I feel you need everything going in.

“This has come to him with just a few days’ notice and that might show at some stage in the fight. He’s got nothing at all to lose and I think he’ll give a good account, but it just be a fight or two soon and he’ll become a better fighter for the experience.”

Ex-Spurs midfielder warns new signing

Says ‘criticism of Brennan Johnson is justified’

The Tottenham star has faced criticism for performances since joining the club, DAZN reports.

Jamie O’Hara has hit out at Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson and claimed he hasn’t been good enough since he joined the club.

The former Nottingham Forest star has come under pressure from some sections of the Spurs fans for his performances after scoring just six goals in 39 games.

Johnson did net the winner in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Coventry, but talking to Grosvenor Sport, former Spurs midfielder O’Hara thinks there’s still room for improvement.

“I still think the criticism of Brennan Johnson is justified,” he said.

“He hasn’t been good enough since he joined Spurs. I was happy for him when he scored that last minute winner against Coventry, but the criticism still stands and he needs to improve.

“You need to perform at the highest level when you play for Tottenham – you’re not playing for Nottingham Forest anymore where you can have one good game in three and everybody says, ‘oh, he’s a good player!’

“I’d say every footballer in their career at some point as been affected by fans giving them stick. It’s part of the job and everyone goes through it – including me when I played. Players like Brennan need to be hard-nosed and thick skinned and play through it.

“I’ve got no problem at all with him scoring in the 90th minute and giving the middle finger to the fans – I was a big fan of that – but you can’t be too sensitive. You’ve got to be harder mentally to play for Tottenham.”

Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois

Keys to victory for both fighters

What each heavyweight must do to be successful in their championship bout this weekend, Mark Lelinwalla reports for DAZN.

Anthony Joshua will look to become a three-time heavyweight world champion this weekend when he challenges IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in London, and live on DAZN.

Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) is riding a four-fight win streak, having last disposed of Francis Ngannou via devastating knockout in March.

Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs) is coming off an eighth-round TKO of Filip Hrgović in June.

Which knockout artist will have his hand held in victory by the night’s end? With the stakes incredibly high for this championship bout, DAZN lists the keys to victory for each heavyweight.

Anthony Joshua’s keys to victory

Joshua and Dubois with promoters Image credit DAZN

Assert the power jab

Anthony Joshua will have a four-inch reach advantage and he ought to use it via his power jab to not only thwart Daniel Dubois’ nimble footwork that he’s been showing lately but also to possibly negate some of the IBF champion’s big punching power in the process.

Piece together combinations

Once the power jab is asserted, AJ must put together power shots with the kind of measured aggression that he’s been utilizing brilliantly during this four-fight winning streak.

Landing these kinds of combinations will certainly damage Dubois toward possibly ending his night and championship reign early — especially if Joshua catches him with the right hand.

Watching Dubois’ eighth-round TKO of Filip Hrgovic from June, one can note that “Dynamite” can get wide with his punching and subsequently be lax with his guard.

AJ spotting this can mark the apt opportunity to unload a big right hand across Dubois’ jaw.

Be the bigger man, bully Dubois

Joshua has been superb on the front foot during this win streak and once he establishes it against Dubois, he can’t let his foot off the gas one bit.

If Joshua is going to become a three-time heavyweight world champion, his ability to walk Dubois down while punishing his fellow Brit will be vital.

Simply put: AJ must bully Dubois to get the stoppage.

Daniel Dubois’ keys to victory

Use in-and-out footwork, while throwing the up jab

Go back and watch Dubois’ performance against Hrgovic and you’ll see some nimble in-and-out footwork during the early stages.

Having a light bounce on his feet while throwing the up jab could pave the way for Dubois to get into a nice rhythm and frustrate Joshua if the champ can be disciplined to it for stretches.

Be more compact with big power shots

As aforementioned, Dubois has a tendency to get a bit too wide with his punching especially while attempting shots in traffic.

Doing this against an experienced former two-time unified heavyweight world champion like AJ could spell doom for Dubois.

The champ has got to be a bit more compact or it will leave him vulnerable to a huge, damaging right hand from Joshua.

Don’t let the moment be too big

Yes, Dubois has been in big-fight environments before, with his experience against Oleksandr Usyk  in August 2023 being tops. And he responded well, even dropping Usyk with a body shot in the fifth round — which upon review was on the belt line and not a low blow as sold with savvy by the current unified heavyweight champ.

But it’s safe to say that Dubois hasn’t fought at a raucous venue and under the bright lights quite like Wembley Stadium will be Saturday.

With this kind of backdrop, Dubois can ill afford to get overzealous in his punching and spirits as it could spell a brief IBF title reign in the form of a devastating knockout.

Being as cool and composed as possible will help his chances toward pulling off an upset.

As Arsenal shares the spoil with Atalanta in Champions League

Arsenal’s David Raya made a stunning double save against Atalanta the Champions League Image credit: Mail Online

By Ed Emeanua

Clubs enjoyed contrasting fortunes on a first day of Champions League season that saw Barcelona labor in vain, and Arsenal with Manchester City spurn what should have been an easy victory.

Yet, it was also an opening day for Europe’s most glamorous Club football fixtures that saw nine stunning goals logged in the book of credits for a rampaging Bayern Munich side.

Monaco upended expectations to make certain for a 10-man Barça road loss after snatching a 2-1 win on Thursday in their Champions League  matchup, just as a sensational David Raya twin-save forced Arsenal to a goalless draw at roaring Europa League champions Atalanta’s den.

Spoiled by an 11th minute Eric Garcia red card incident, Barça, despite starting their La Liga season on an unblemished note after five games and counting, succumbed to a now famous defeat on the Côte d’Azur.

Maghnes Akliouche headed the Ligue one outfit in the victor’s path with a fifth minute opener following Garcia’s ejection for a last-man take-down of Monaco’s Japanese armada Takumi Minamino.

Lamine Yamal tried to right the visitor’s course with his 28th minute leveler through an angled shot after the teenager had cut in from the right and into his familiar left foot, but George Ilenikhena had the final say with the winning goal for the home side inside the last 20 minutes of the encounter.

“After ten minutes with the red card the game changed totally, but what I can see is really the positive thing,” Barça boss Hansi Flick reflected to reporters after the game.

“We tried to defend as a team and also attack as a team, and we had chances, but today they deserve the 2-1 (win), so we have to accept that.”

In Italy, Arsenal goalkeeper Raya was the difference maker as he contrived to fashion out a deserved point for his side in a rough-rider of a campaign opener against Atalanta in an 0-0 ending.

A cagey match was opened up six minutes into the second stanza of the melee when Mateo Retegui saw Raya splash down to his right to paw out his penalty, after Thomas Partey fouled Ederson.

Hangman: “I have watched, and I have listened for a long while because I knew a day like this would come, when Swerve Strickland was dealt with, and he would be gone! And I knew that it wouldn’t be just Swerve who had to pay. There were people who protected him from me, and people who supported Swerve.

“And apparently, I am surrounded by them now. People who would cheer Swerve all the way to the AEW World Championship. People who would cheer Swerve when he was finally locked in a cage with his fate! And when I hear those voices, I’m reminded of the four months I sat at home suspended. And I’m reminded I seem to hear another voice loud and clear, above them, a voice coming clear from the commentary desk.”

Renee Paquette tried to interview Ricochet backstage, but Will Ospreay interrupted!

Ospreay offered his hand to Ricochet. Ricochet said, “You told me to get my wins up and come see you. Let me show you how it is from my perspective. From the moment I stepped foot in AEW, everyone has been calling me out to try to prove they’re better than me.

“It seems everyone is more worried about you than they are about me. No one has been calling you out. So let me do the honors. In two weeks, I hope you’re not too busy. I took your advice. FOURS YEARS IN THE MAKING…

“The Learning Tree” Chris Jericho vs. “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy

Back in the summer of 2020, with the fans of All Elite Wrestling primarily having to experience the best professional wrestling on the planet from their own homes rather than in-person, Chris Jericho and Orange Cassidy engaged in a series of matches beginning with FYTER FEST 2020: NIGHT 2 on July 8th. Jericho scored the victory in that initial meeting, albeit with a little bit of engagement from his Inner Circle cronies, but the entire situation was Jericho’s fault to start. He chose to assault Orange Cassidy a month prior, with a bag of orange no less, and leave the man a bloody mess while the rest of The Inner Circle made sure The Best Friends were in no shape to help Cassidy out either. The following week at FYTER FEST 2020 was the night that OC gave Jericho and his lackeys an orange juice bath, and that’s the choice that has come back to haunt the 2-Time International Champion. Despite the fact he defeated Jericho in a “$7,000 Obligation Match” on the 8/12/20 DYNAMITE to settle this debt Chris arbitrarily decided he was owed (it’s not as if OC came at him for broken sunglasses), despite that he bested Chris at ALL OUT 2020 in their wild Mimosa Mayhem match, and that they even teamed up on the 2021 Jericho Cruise, “The Learning Tree” has decided to latch onto this OJ stained jacket as an excuse to insinuate himself into Cassidy’s sphere once again…

Whether it’s sadder that Jericho can’t let this go, or that he’s held onto the coat for four years letting it fester that he got beat twice by OC, well that’s up to the fans of All Elite Wrestling, but that’s where we are today walking into DYNAMITE. Jericho insisted the debt was still owed, sent Bryan Keith to collect as part of their Continental Contenders Challenge match ahead of ALL OUT 2024, and even stole Cassidy’s prized backpack as a sort of ransom. Jericho even used the fact that Cassidy keeps a picture of himself, Trent Beretta, and Kris Statlander in the bag as a means to mock him, clearly not having a grasp about the concept of friendship and how losing it can affect an individual. Cassidy may come off like nothing matters, but it’s been clear since day one that his friends are the most important thing to him despite what Trent may claim.

That’s why this new band of friends, this Conglomeration, has been such a big part of Cassidy’s life recently, why they’ve had his back in this Jericho fiasco, and why they’re more than willing to dump a little humiliation (and some coinage) into Jericho’s life. Both men are coming into tonight after unsuccessful excursions to CMLL last Friday for ANIVERSARO 91, but at least OC got a trios victory over Dark Order on RAMPAGE alongside Kyle O’Reilly and Mark Briscoe heading in to tonight and he does have an eight-man victory over Jericho the last time they shared a ring one month ago. Jericho also has recent trios victory over Iron Savages in his pocket, but losses in his last two singles matches, including the two-of-three falls loss to Mistico in Mexico.

Given all the history wrapped up in this, and Jericho’s infuriating refusal to just let this go, will tonight bring an end to this four-year old grudge, or will “The Learning Tree” find another thing to hold of Cassidy’s head should OC become the first man in AEW to hold three singles victories over him?

TRIOS BATTLE…

The Elite (AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada & AEW World Tag Champions The Young Bucks)

versus

AEW International Champion Will Ospreay & Don Callis Family (Konosuke Takeshita & Kyle Fletcher)

Last week, in the first-ever Tag Team Casino Gauntlet, AEW International Champion Will Ospreay and “The Protostar” Kyle Fletcher reunited to earn themselves an AEW World Tag Team Title opportunity at GRAND SLAM 2024 next Wednesday night. Though their continuity as a team was not the smoothest, especially in a ring filled with the best teams in professional wrestling today, the former United Empire brothers managed to find their groove when it mattered most and knocked out a victory. The win made Ospreay three for three in Casino Gauntlet matches, earned he and Fletcher their championship opportunity at Arthur Ashe, and meant “The Aerial Assassin” would challenge for his third different AEW championship in 2024, his first at the World Tag Titles.

For Kyle Fletcher that victory last week meant his second opportunity to challenge for the titles, his first taking place last year at WRESTLEDREAM 2023 during FTR’s reign, coincidentally also the match where Kyle’s Aussie Open partner Mark Davis suffered the injury that’s kept him on the shelf. Prior to last week, it had been nearly five years since the last time Kyle and Will teamed up as a tag team, yet now they’re in the position to become champions with one major roadblock along the way in this trios contest!

Tonight on DYNAMITE, ahead of their World Tag Team Championship challenge, Ospreay and Fletcher will team up with Kyle’s fellow Don Callis Family member Konosuke Takeshita to take on The Elite of Matthew Jackson, Nicholas Jackson, and Kazuchika Okada! All three members of that trio currently wear AEW championship gold around their waist, the former two as World Tag Champs and the latter as Continental Champion, meaning all three have targets on their back based on that fact alone. Factor in the general dislike the majority of the AEW locker room has for everything Elite, and that makes these three of the most despised men in All Elite Wrestling today.

While we know that Ospreay and Fletcher have earned their title opportunity, their third man has his own designs on finally becoming a champion in AEW, and Takeshita has made Okada the focus of those designs. The world heard how much the AEW fans at ALL OUT 2024 wanted to see these two fight during that Continental Championship Four-Way, so much so that they even threw shade at Orange Cassidy when he interrupted that possibility, but tonight they may get another opportunity to see that take place. Takeshita would certainly relish that chance to fight “The Rainmaker” here, perhaps even pin his shoulders to that mat with that impressive Raging Fire maneuver he picked up during the G1 Climax and make his case as the next Continental Title challenger.

Really that’s what this one is all about, making a statement in the title picture, for The Young Bucks to establish themselves as the dominant team before GRAND SLAM 2024, for Takeshita to make his case as a potential Continental Challenger to Okada or for “The Rainmaker” to shut that down. It’s a chance for Ospreay and Fletcher to further gel together as a team, to establish their viability as title holders against the brothers Jackson, but this is a trio that’s never come together before facing a 4-1 Elite unit whose last trio victory came over the incredible team of The Acclaimed and NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi! Suffice to say, as talented as they are, the Ospreay/Takeshita/Fletcher crew have their work cut out for them…

TAG TEAM GRUDGE MATCH…

AEW Women’s World Champion Mariah May & “The Professor” Serena Deeb vs. Queen Aminata & Yuka Sakazaki

Queen Aminata and Mariah May, Yuka Sakazaki and Serena Deeb, these are four women with a score to settle after Saturday night’s COLLISION. On DYNAMITE, Mariah May turned away the Eliminator challenge of the Queen, denying Aminata a future title opportunity before calling out for Mina Shirakawa. On COLLISION, after months of waiting for the fight, Yuka Sakazaki topped Serena Deeb in their one-on-one bout only to get waylaid by the AEW Women’s World Champion who had been sitting in on commentary. Unfortunately for Mariah May, her attempt to take out “The Magical Girl” fell short and it was Mariah who ended up knocked on her rear end by a kick from Yuka. Given that Yuka had approached Mariah earlier in the night to express her designs on the AEW Women’s World Title, it was no surprise May jumped her from behind, just as it was no surprise that after she turned the tables, Yuka picked the title belt up in clear sign of her intent for “The Glamour”.

Well tonight on DYNAMITE the paths of these four women will intersect as AEW Women’s World Champion Mariah May and Serena Deeb will combine forces to take on Queen Aminata and Yuka Sakazaki! It’s quite the intriguing situation as, just four months ago, Mariah and Serena stood as opponents, and that was the night Toni Storm threw in the towel on Mariah’s behalf to cost her the match, and thus a title opportunity at DOUBLE OR NOTHING 2024. Is there any lingering ill will about that loss or was that blame laid squarely at the feet of “The Timeless One” as Mariah came to her decision to betray that trust?

Now neither team is familiar with one another as partners, but at least Aminata and Yuka don’t have a history as opponents, theirs is a clean slate upon which to write, but will they pen a story of success or one of failure tonight on DYNAMITE?

ONE-ON-ONE…

Ricochet vs. The Beast Mortos

Seconds after Ricochet defeated Sammy Guevara in their match last week, The Beast Mortos ripped through Ricochet with a spear, and who knows what more could have happened to AEW’s newest acquisition if not for Sammy choosing to assist his opponent. Mortos was poised to do more than just a spear, but the chair in Guevara’s hands had The Beast elect for a hasty retreat.

Well if it is a fight The Beast Mortos was looking for, he did not have to wait long because tonight on DYNAMITE, he will get the opportunity to go one-on-one with Ricochet! We know what each mans bring to the table; one side is the power and the other is flight, one side is the viciousness and the other is fluid technique, together it could make for quite the jaw-dropping match, but it’s going to hurt getting to that victory!

We are on the journey to GRAND SLAM 2024 at historic Arthur Ashe Stadium, and tonight that journey brings All Elite Wrestling to Wilkes-Barre, PA and the Mohegan Sun Arena where Chris Jericho will fight Orange Cassidy, The Elite will take on The Don Callis Family and AEW International Champion Will Ospreay, plus Queen Aminata will unite with Yuka Sakazaki to face AEW Women’s World Champion Mariah May and Serena Deeb! DYNAMITE begins at 8pm ET/7pm CT on TBS, or check here for your viewing options outside the United States. Wherever you may be, drop by the official AEW YouTube channel to watch all the highlights from recent editions of DYNAMITE, COLLISION, and RAMPAGE, as well as the amazing Timelines dedicated to Nigel McGuinness and record-setting ROH Women’s World Champion Athena! Then AEW is off to the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA on Saturday for a live COLLISION where Undisputed Kingdom of Matt Taven and Mike Bennett will challenge Sammy Guevara and Dustin Rhodes for the ROH World Tag Titles in a Bunkhouse Brawl!
