Chelsea keen on Osimhen Summer signing

Dumps the idea of the Winter signing of Karim Benzema

  • Benzema has been linked with a return to Europe from Saudi Arabia this month
  • Chelsea open to signing new striker before the January window shuts
  • Real Madrid links played down by Benzema’s brother

According to a report, Chelsea has opted against pursuing a move for Al Ittihad striker Karim Benzema, Tom Gott reports for 90min.

The Blues are open to a move for a new forward this month ahead of making a big splash in the summer when Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is expected to be a top target.

When reports from Saudi Arabia emerged suggesting Benzema could be on the hunt for a return to Europe, Chelsea was quickly touted as a potential suitor, with many fans drooling over the prospect of a six-month loan for the 36-year-old.

However, according to The Athletic, Chelsea have ruled out a move for Benzema before the January transfer window shuts.

Blues officials are keen to avoid expensive moves for older players and will instead focus on recruiting young, emerging talents.

90min confirmed earlier this month that a move away from Saudi Arabia for Benzema was always viewed as unlikely this month, with league officials incredibly reluctant to part ways with one of the biggest names in their project after just six months.

Benzema has since done his best to silence the speculation, while his brother publicly rubbished reports of a possible return to Real Madrid for the veteran forward.

With the transfer window set to close on Thursday, Chelsea are running out of time to make significant changes in the striker department.

The Blues will listen to offers for striker Armando Broja, but a hefty price tag placed on the Albania international could limit his options before the end of the month.

In the summer, Chelsea hopes to have more money available and will seek to end their goalscoring woes. Long-term target Osimhen, whose contract contains a release clause worth over £100m, is expected to be in their sights.

Battle of fierce neighbors in Korhogo

As Mali faces Burkina Faso in a Round of 16 showdown

Korhogo’s Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium will close off its TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 hosting with a blockbuster fixture between Group E top finishers, Mali facing the Stallions of Burkina Faso on Tuesday, 30 January at 17h00 GMT.

Separated by a mere 650km distance, the meeting between the two neighbors promises to produce fireworks, with both sides yearning for continental glory, having both fallen short on two separate occasions.

Having come agonizingly close to lifting the title in 2013, the Stallions, who finished second behind Angola in Group D, will be looking at going all their way despite having a jittery start to the tournament.

Their journey to the round of 16 was not the easiest after having to sweat for a victory over Mauritania, whom they edged 1-0 in their opener, before a 2-2 stand-off between them and Algeria in their second fixture.

Their final group match saw them outclassed by Angola in a 2-0 defeat, which was fortunately not too detrimental for their campaign as their 4 points were enough to see them advance.

On the other hand, Mali lived up to the high expectations placed on them in Group E after a strong opening against South Africa.

The Stallions of Burkina Faso rejoice after a shocking 2-0 defeat of the Eagles of Cattage of Tunisia

The Eagles soared over Bafana Bafana by 2-0 in their opening clash but seemed to have let the foot off the pedal in their last two group matches after playing out to a 1-1 draw with Tunisia before the Brave Warriors of Namibia held them to a goalless draw.

A lot will be expected of the Eagles’ ace, Yves Bissouma, who is yet to stamp his authority in the competition, while the Stallions’ Bertrand Traore will be entrusted with being a key figure for his side.

Interesting Facts:

The Eagles of Mali soared over Bafana Bafana by 2-0 in their opening clash

  • Both Burkina Faso and Mali are making their 13th TotalEnergies CAF AFCON appearance.
  • Both nations have lost a TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Final.

Burkina Faso

In their previous 12 appearances, they have either been eliminated in the group stages (8 times) or at least reached the semi-finals (4 times), including the final defeat in 2013 (0 – 1 Nigeria).

Mali

This is Mali’s 13th appearance and 9th in a row. Without winning the trophy, no side has ever played as many games as Mali (54) at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON. Their best performance dates back to 1972, when they lost 3-2 in the final against Congo.

Roger Boli weighs Côte d’Ivoire’s chances against Senegal

Roger Boli, commentator for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 for CAF TV, has analyzed the host country’s chances against defending champion Senegal in round 16.

In this interview with Cafonline.com, he revealed his impressions about the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

How are you experiencing the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023?

Everything is fine. I commentate on the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON in San Pedro for CAF TV with my friend Frank Simon, and we have been treated to quality games in Group F.

I could see players of great talent, who I liked before and who confirmed all the good things I think of them. I am impressed with players like Daka from Zambia and Kakuta from DR Congo. I liked Ounnahi from Morocco, who is having a good tournament, and Sofiane Boufal doing something impressive on the side, too. Don’t forget Amrabat, who does an excellent job in the midfield.

In the other teams, I like the collective strength of Nigeria, especially the central defense, which has not conceded many goals. Ekong, Ajayi, Bassey, and Aina do a great job on the pitch, just like Lookman and Osimhen, who bring a lot to their team even if he doesn’t score. His work rate is essential for the team.

Emilio Nsue is also very valuable to his team. He does a lot of running with or without the ball. Then there is the Angolan Gelson Dala, an outstanding player.

The Senegalese team has impressed me with their collective effort.

It’s the most beautiful TotalEnergies CAF AFCON I have attended since 2002 in Mali.

I have attended all TotalEnergies CAF AFCON since 2002, except for 2015, where Ivory Coast won. This TotalEnergies CAF AFCON is a very good TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, and it is not because it is being played on the Ivory Coast. I mainly talk about the quality of the matches and the players. Africa is starting to make a lot of progress.

We see very competitive matches. We noticed that there is no small team among the qualified teams. It’s great to see all these players holding their place.

Tell us a little about this commentator role that you play.

I’m enjoying it. Having the chance to comment on group F, which gave us so many emotions, is a real treat.

Once again, I liked Morocco with its collective effort. I had fun as a commentator. I have the chance to see suitable matches, talk about them, and experience them as if I were still a player. At the same time, it’s a job that I love immensely. I’m not a footballer anymore, but it’s just like I still was.

On the ground, how do you assess the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023?

I appreciate this TotalEnergies CAF AFCON because there are suitable matches. There is nothing like small small teams. All the teams fight among themselves. There are a lot of surprises. These are tough matches but not closed ones.

We have a chance; everyone is playing to win, and each team is doing its best to get a good result. There are some excellent goals. It’s a very high-level TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, with all teams impressing day by day.

Does Cotê D’Ivoire have a chance against Senegal?

Côte d’Ivoire came back alive after Morocco’s victory. We know that in a match, anything can happen. Senegal also has flaws, and it’s up to the Elephants to exploit them well.

We will have to be vigilant because this Lions team has a lot of quality and speed. You must avoid crashing in quickly, play with time, surprise them, and play with character and will.

The previous matches were very difficult for Ivory Coast. There is one last chance available; we must seize it and play it with determination because the country deserves it.

Lions blow 17-point lead, lose NFC championship heartbreaker to 49ers

NFL fans could hardly believe what they watched for much of the game. The Lions were not just beating the 49ers; they were handling San Francisco, a team many believed was the best in the NFL, Edward Sutelan reports for The Sporting News.

However, what was at one point a 24-7 lead evaporated, and it didn’t take long for it to disappear completely. The 49ers scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter and booted a fourth-quarter field goal to cap off four straight scoring drives that flipped the score. San Francisco held on late, winning 34-31 to top the Lions and earn a trip to the Super Bowl to set up a rematch from 2020 with the Chiefs.

The third quarter has been a consistent bugaboo for the Lions all season. Detroit allowed 111 third-quarter points in 2023, the most in the NFL, and scored just 73 points, tied for 15th in the NFL.

At one point, NFL Next Gen Stats listed the Lions as having a 90.4-percent chance to win. How did they blow it? Here’s what you need to know.

How the Lions blew the lead to the 49ers

Detroit went into the locker room having just booted a field goal to go up 24-7. The game was far from over, but it was a statement to take a three-score, 17-point advantage. Kyle Shanahan had deferred to the second half, hoping to double up, but now was hoping the first-half possession would allow San Francisco to get back in the game.

The first possession out of the locker rooms was a step in the right direction, but it hardly felt enough. San Francisco took nine plays before kicking a 43-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 24-10. That’s where the chaos started.

First controversial decision to go for it

Dan Campbell is known for making aggressive fourth-down decisions. Given his aggressive tendencies, he has advised people watching Lions games to wear diapers. This time, he might have gone a bit too far.

The Lions stalled at the 49ers’ 28-yard line and faced a 4th-and-2. A field goal would have put the Lions back up three scores again and matched the field goal earlier in the game. Instead, Detroit wound up going for it.

Campbell opted to put the ball in Jared Goff’s hands, and it appeared the play worked as intended. Unfortunately, the ball hit off Josh Reynolds’ hands, dropping for a crucial incompletion and a turnover on downs.

Brandon Aiyuk’s heroic drive

Deebo Samuel started the drive off, showing off his speed with an impressive 17-yard catch to get to the San Francisco 45, but make no mistake — this was the Brandon Aiyuk drive.

Purdy threw a deep pass that overshot Aiyuk and appeared headed for an interception to Kindle Vildor. The ball deflected off Vildor and was scooped up by Aiyuk, who made an acrobatic 51-yard grab to move the 49ers up to the Detroit 4-yard line.

But he wasn’t done there. The 49ers struggled to get the ball in the end zone until Purdy shifted in the pocket and threaded the needle to Aiyuk for a touchdown, which brought the game to 24-17.

Quick turnaround

What happened next didn’t take long to unfold. The Lions had the ball back with 5:17 left in the third quarter and a chance to regain momentum. It did not unfold that way at all. Instead, Jahmyr Gibbs mishandled the handoff and lost the ball when he got to the line of scrimmage. Arik Armstead hopped on it at the Detroit 24, and the 49ers had the ball back.

The 49ers made quick work punishing the Lions for the turnover. Purdy scrambled for 21 yards to the Lions’ four-yard line, Samuel added another three yards, and Christian McCaffrey finished it with the game-tying touchdown.

First lead change

The Lions had been gashing the 49ers on the ground all game. Still, after David Montgomery ran for only a yard on the first-down carry following the game-tying score, the Lions opted to have Goff pass twice, the last one again resulting in a brutal drop by Reynolds.

The punt from Jack Fox appeared to be perfect, bouncing inside the five-yard line and going straight up in the air, but the momentum of the Lions’ gunner carried him into the end zone, resulting in a touchback with the ball to give San Francisco the ball at the 20.

The game now tied, San Francisco was able to get back into its style of combining methodical passes with gashing runs. Purdy and McCaffrey systematically carved their way up the field, taking 7:09 off the clock on 11 plays, ending in a 33-yard field goal to give San Francisco the lead with 9:52 left in the game.

Second controversial decision to go for it

Did we mention Campbell advised wearing diapers? Yeah, well, again, he throws caution to the wind, and for the second time on Sunday, it ended controversially.

The Lions reached the 49ers’ 30-yard line with 7:32 left, but they were stuck at a 4th-and-3. The field goal would have tied the game. Instead, Campbell put the ball in Goff’s hands. He was flushed out of the pocket and threw a wobbler downfield short of a diving Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Tasked with defending their first lead, the 49ers again marched down the field. This time, they didn’t stop with a field goal, capping it off with a three-yard touchdown by Elijah Mitchell to give the 49ers a 10-point lead.

The Lions scored one more touchdown, but needing an onside kick, Detroit came up unsuccessful, and the 49ers were able to run out the clock on the victory.

Most prominent blown leads in NFL playoff history

The Lions at least won’t go down in history as having blown the largest lead in playoff history. That still belongs to “The Comeback,” a wild game where the Bills mounted an improbable run to come back from down 32 to defeat the Oilers in the wild-card round of the 1993 AFC playoffs to win 41-38.

Matchup Date Round Deficit Winner

Mpasi wants lightening to strike twice

D.R. Congo Goalkeeper hoping to repeat 2009 CHAN success in Côte d’Ivoire

D.R. Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi hopes his country will repeat their success in the 2009 CHAN tournament in Côte d’Ivoire in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 by winning it.

Mpasi scored the winning penalty to help D.R. Congo eliminate Egypt from the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 in the round of 16 stages.

The goalkeeper was already likening their run in the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 to their CHAN success in Côte d’Ivoire 15 years ago.

“We’re already going to rest well, and then we’ll take it match after match. All this without forgetting that DR Congo won a continental title in Côte d’Ivoire (CHAN in 2009). “Maybe that’s a sign,” he said.

The goalkeeper explained how he prevented Gabaski from scoring his penalty and the technique behind his winning penalty.

“I tried to stay calm. I tried to distract Gabaski from his shot, and I succeeded. After that, I concentrated on getting my technique right,” said the Congo DR keeper.

Mpasi said he remembered his missed training shot and tried to do better.

“Before my shot, I thought about how I had missed in training, but tonight it worked,” he concluded.

In Korhogo, Mohamed finally meets Siphiwe

Tanzania’s star finally meets his South African idol

The most prestigious sporting event on the continent, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, is also an exciting opportunity for currently active players to finally cross paths with African football legends who inspired their careers.

Tanzania’s Mohamed Hussein had such an experience in Korhogo, where they played their final Group F fixture against DR Congo.

Despite being unable to advance further in the competition, Hussein’s stay in Korhogo was further highlighted by meeting his idol, South Africa’s Siphiwe Tshabalala, who was present in Korhogo as one of the invited CAF Legends.

Tshabalala, who hailed CAF’s exceptional organization of this year’s TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, was the first player to score in Africa’s first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2010 after getting the only goal for South Africa in their draw against Mexico.

The Tanzanian star, whose appreciation for Tshabalala is well known back home and has even been nicknamed after the star, shared on his social platform the fantastic experience of meeting the World Cup star, who also played at three TotalEnergies CAF AFCON competitions in 2006, 2008 and 2013.

“Finally, I met my role model, who made me love football more. He made me write his name on my jersey. A magical left-foot, the author of the first goal of the South Africa 2010 World Cup,” he wrote.

The young Hussein was over 13 when the former Kaizer Chiefs player made history on African soil.

Since then, Hussein adopted “Tshabalala” as his nickname and has always expressed his desire to one day meet his hero. Thanks to the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, his dream came true.

“In South Africa, I was often told about him. I was thrilled to meet Mohamed finally,” Tshabalala told CAFOnline.

Leopards lurch into AFCON quarter-finals

D.R Congo advances after dramatic penalty shootout

DR Congo secured its ticket to the CAF TotalEnergies Côte d’Ivoire CAF Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, defeating Egypt on penalties 8-7 (1-1 at the end). Extensions).

By so doing, D.R. Congo has knocked Egypt out of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.

Stade Laurent Pokou was blazing throughout the 120 minutes the game was played.

Meschack Elia scored to put D.R. Congo into the lead in the 37th minute. He headed home from the six-yard box to score the game’s opening goal.

The Pharaohs showed what they were made up of by responding to D.R. Congo’s lead in the first half.

Egypt was awarded a penalty after the VAR review. Attacker Mostafa Mohamed made no mistake, converting it into the top right corner. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau was soundly beaten as the ball nestled in his net.

Despite their second-half dominance, the seven-time champions couldn’t break down the resilient D.R. Congo defense.

The game finally transitioned to extra time, the very first one of the tournament in Côte D’Ivoire.

Egypt was reduced to 10 men in the extra time after Hamdi Mohamed was sent off following his second yellow card of the game.

The numerical disadvantage didn’t prevent Egypt from pressing and creating the chances.

The game ultimately went into a penalty kick shootout, and Egypt missed twice from the penalty spot; Mostafa Mohamed and goalkeeper Gabaski both missed their kicks, and Arthur Masuaku missed his earlier for D.R. Congo.

D.R. Congo won 8-7 on penalties and has progressed to the quarter-finals.

Egypt has twice failed to advance from Round 16 in three previous attempts. D.R. Congo’s progress has been halted in their first knockout game in their two previous appearances (2019 and 2017).

Sebastien Desabre’s men will now face Guinea in the last 8.

REACTIONS

Sébastien Desabre, D.R. Congo coach
I’m very proud of my players. We had a strategy to contain this team, but they played too low in the first half. I changed it afterward, and we played better. We suffered, but I think Egypt did, too.
My knowledge of Egyptian football probably helped us. They’re a good team, but we were better today. Mentally, I think we were solid.
Mostafa Mohamed
Now, we’ll try to recover well, and then we’ll take it match after match, starting with Guinea, our next opponent.
Rui Vitoria, Egypt coach
It wasn’t what we expected. We came up against a formidable opponent. Each team has its strong and weak moments.
We’re unfortunate. We worked hard to go far in the competition.
Then there was the penalty shootout, and that wasn’t our day. In football, there are good times and bad times.
Part of the responsibility is mine. We will keep working with this team as long as I am here.
