Mackenzie Blackwood to San Jose’s rescue

He makes 32 saves as the Sharks blank Kraken 2-0

SEA@SJS: Vlasic fires a shot through traffic to strike first

On Tuesday, Mackenzie Blackwood made 32 saves for the San Jose Sharks in a 2-0 win against the Seattle Kraken at SAP Center, Ben Ross reports for the Associated Press.

Blackwood had his first shutout since Dec. 8, 2021, when he made 25 saves for the New Jersey Devils in a 3-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers. It was his ninth in the NHL.

“I think he’s been great all year,” San Jose coach David Quinn said. “I think he’s one of the top goalies in the League and just a phenomenal teammate, too. This guy looks like King Kong in the net. He’s so athletic, he’s poised, and he’s a hell of a teammate. It makes you surprised it’s his first shutout this year.”

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Jan Rutta scored in the third period for the Sharks (14-32-4), who have won four of their past five games.

“I think we have confidence now that we can close a game out, whereas at the start of the year, we were gripping the sticks a little too tight and making panic plays,” Blackwood said. “But we seem calm and believe we can close a game out, and we did an outstanding job.”

Joey Daccord made 20 saves for the Kraken (21-19-10), who had won two of their past three.

“He stole a game for them tonight,” Daccord said of Blackwood. “I thought we played great, generated a lot of offense, carried most of the play. Their goalie played unreal. Sometimes, a goalie of that caliber can do that.”

Vlasic gave San Jose a 1-0 lead at 7:27 of the third when Ty Emberson set him up for a wrist shot through traffic. The defenseman has scored a goal in two straight games and three goals in his past five after being a healthy scratch in 22 games this season.

“I’ve been opportunistic,” Vlasic said. “I’ve scored on my chances, and I feel good. I’m skating, creating, joining the rush, and good things are happening.”

Rutta scored into an empty net on a shot the length of the ice with 21 seconds remaining for the 2-0 final.

Seattle outshot San Jose 18-8 through the first two periods.

“We played a hard hockey game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “They defend hard. They play hard, and we knew that was the case. We had three or four outstanding opportunities in the first two periods and couldn’t get that first goal. They found that first goal on a seeing-eye shot. I don’t think Joey probably had a chance to see that. It went through two layers of a screen. And that’s the difference in the hockey game.”

The Sharks played without Tomas Hertl, who is day to day with an undisclosed injury. With him out of the lineup, William Eklund played center for the first time at the NHL level.

“I felt like, in the first period, I was feeling it a little bit,” Eklund said. “Getting into those rush positions, especially in the D-zone, you must be more responsible. I felt like it got better and better throughout the game.”

NOTES: Vlasic scored his 13th game-winning goal, passing Dan Boyle (12) for the second most by a defenseman in Sharks’ franchise history. … Vlasic became the fifth Sharks defenseman, age 36 or older, to score in consecutive games.

The others were Boyle (three times), Gary Suter (three times), Brent Burns (twice) and Rob Blake (once). … Vince Dunn, who has 136 points (29 goals, 107 assists) during his career with the Kraken, played in his 200th game with Seattle to become the sixth player to reach the milestone with the franchise.

Jared McCann is the only player with more points for the Kraken, with 153 (86 goals, 67 assists) during their 200th game. … Seattle played its final game before the NHL All-Star break.

Sixers’ Joel Embiid to undergo MRI

Aftermath of injuring left knee in Golden State Warriors loss

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid will undergo an MRI on his left knee after injuring it in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors, Kendra Andrews reports for ABC.

The injury occurred with 4:04 left in the game as Embiid was double-teamed by the Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga and Draymond Green. After Kuminga poked the ball away from him, Embiid fell to the ground to retrieve it, and Kuminga subsequently fell on top of his knee.

Embiid grabbed the knee and was in visible pain. He ultimately got up, limped to the locker room, and did not return to the game.

Embiid had missed the Sixers’ previous two games because of knee soreness in that same knee. He was listed as questionable heading into Tuesday’s contest, with his final status decided after he warmed up.

“Medical cleared him, and Joel is a big part in that. He said he was feeling good,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said.

The nurse explained that Tuesday’s injury is “kind of unrelated to what’s been bothering” Embiid, adding, “We just have to wait.”

Even though Embiid said he felt well enough to compete against the Warriors, he didn’t appear to be playing at 100 percent. Throughout the game, there was little to no lift for Embiid when he defended the basket, making him far less of a rim protector. During one play, Embiid offered a late challenge at the basket, but his legs buckled beneath him with no contact, and he fell to the floor.

On offense, Embiid didn’t attack the hoop much, settling for 3-pointers and mid-range shots. When he did try to work his way to the basket, he didn’t look as explosive; instead, he attempted to back his defender down slowly and methodically.

“He said he’s more rusty — he hadn’t been on the court in five days — but he said he felt good,” Nurse said. “He felt like he wasn’t playing like his normal self, but that was more rust and rhythm than anything else.”

Embiid finished with 14 points on 5-of-18 shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, and a team-low minus-21 net rating.

Embiid missed three games earlier in January due to left knee swelling. ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne reported that the injury is something Embiid and Philadelphia will have to manage for the remainder of the season.

Embiid can miss only five more games before becoming ineligible for postseason awards, including All-NBA team honors and MVP. The league’s new rule requires a minimum of 65 games to qualify.

After Tuesday’s loss, Nurse was asked if that rule influenced the decision to let Embiid play.

“I can’t speak to that, but we are going to continue to do all of the necessary things they’ve been doing the whole time he’s been playing here,” Nurse said. “He has these checks, he gets to these points, medicals are good, they recheck him, he says he’s good, he even said he felt good in the game tonight. We keep relaying to that.”

The 76ers have one day off before facing the Utah Jazz on Thursday in Salt Lak.

The people in Perth get ready to rumble when Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr get in the ring-Bob Arum

The vacant IBF lightweight world title fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr was formally announced today from Perth, Australia, by Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Adam Noble-Forcey reports for ProBox TV.

The legendary promoter has drawn acclaim as boxing’s most excellent, with historic nights such as The Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila starring all-time great Muhammad Ali.

Arum heads to Perth in Western Australia with help from the local government to bring Ukraine’s former three-weight world champion to fight Sydney’s Kambosos at the RAC Arena on May 12.

“These are two accomplished fighters,” Arum said by video call at today’s official press conference. “Vasiliy Lomachenko was the most outstanding amateur fighter in the history of boxing. He had 397 amateur fights and lost only one. As a professional, he’s won world titles from 126 to 135. He is technically considered one of the greatest masters of boxing.

“And George Kambosos is a fighter who always is in the fight, giving his all and performing splendidly. The people in Perth, Australia, and the world are in for a huge treat when these two great fighters meet in the ring in Perth.

Like fans worldwide, fans in Perth will fall in love with Lomachenko even though he will be fighting an Aussie because Lomachenko is such a gentleman and a sterling person. I remember when the Russians attacked Ukraine, Loma was training for a fight outside of Ukraine.

He immediately left, flew to Romania, and drove to the suburb of Odessa, where he lived, to wear a uniform to help defend his country. He is an exemplary person, a great person, a great family man; everything that could be good for the sport of boxing is personified by Vasiliy Lomachenko.”

Arum co-promotes the event with Kambosos’s promoter, Lou DiBella, and Australian outfit No Limit. The fight will be aired on ESPN in America and Main Event in Australia. It is assumed the about will be aired on Sky Sports in the UK due to their broadcast deal with Top Rank.

Lomachenko comes off a contentious points defeat to Devin Haney in Las Vegas last May.

“Everybody sitting with me ringside in my area had it eight-rounds for Lomachenko, four-rounds Haney,” Arum added. “I, at worst, thought Loma pulled it out at seven to five.

The good judges saw it differently from other spectators and me. It is what it is; it can happen when the judges are very subjective on how they score a fight. Loma took that loss like a grown-up, and now he looks to resume his career with a win and another lightweight world title in Perth against a formidable competitor in George Kambosos.”

South Africa produced one of the major upsets in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 after knocking Morocco out with a 2-0 win in the round of 16.

The first half saw few goalscoring opportunities being created.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco got the best chance of the first half but saw their goal being disallowed by the VAR.

The second half was opposite to what the first half provided in-terms of drama and goals.

South Africa took the lead in the 57th minute when striker Evidence Makgopa connected to a pass inside the 18-yard box to hit the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

After going down, Morocco had just one mission, to equalize. This led to the introduction more forwards.

Morocco were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute when a ball hit the hands of Teboho Mokoena in the South African 18-yard box and a penalty was awarded after VAR review.

Achraf Hakimi stepped up to convert but he ended up hitting the ball against the crossbar and his effort went off the pitch.

Huge relief it was for South Africa after the miss but the pressure was still on them.

Sofyan Amrabat was shown the exit after a challenge on a Mokoena as last man and was shown a second yellow, which was upgraded to a straight red after VAR review by referee Mahmood Ismail

South Africa took advantage of the numerical disadvantage and added the second goal to seal the game thanks to a wonderful free kick by Teboho Mokoena.

South Africa will play Cape Verde on Saturday, February 3 at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro at the quarter-finals.

Quotes

Hugo Bross, South Africa coach

“In the first half, we tried to contain them and cut off their passing lines. In the second, the game opened up and we scored. We knew that whoever scores first in the match will have a big advantage.”

Walid Regragui, Morocco coach

“We fought until the end with our weapons. I am disappointed for our supporters who deserved much better. Personally, I felt we were capable of bringing this cup home. But that didn’t happen. I hope my players will learn, especially the younger ones.”

Mali are through to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 quarter finals after a nail-biting 2-1 win over Burkina Faso on Tuesday in Korhogo.

An unfortunate own goal by Edmond Tabsoba along with a second half strike by Lassine Sinayoko were enough for the Eagles to soar over the Stallions at a packed Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

It took just 3 minutes for Mali to take the lead after a powerful Amadou Haidara header came off the woodwork, but instead of it being cleared away, Edmond Tabsoba was unfortunate to see his clearance go into his own net.

Minutes later, Kamory Doumbia, who was a handful for the Burkinabe defense almost doubled his side’s lead after a great build up saw him through on goal, but his effort was denied by the advancing Kouakou Koffi.

A golden opportunity fell the way of the in-form Sinayoko to double the lead after doing well to turn his marker to unleash a powerful effort that was denied by the alert Koffi in the 35th minute.

Carried by the momentum, the Eagles continued surging forward but wasted numerous opportunities as they took the slender lead into the break.

Returning from the recess, Sinayoko capitalized on a lapse of concentration after beating the offside trap to face the keeper and comfortably slot home with just minutes into the restart.

A lifeline was given to the Stallions after Mohamed Konate’s headed effort came off the arm of Boubacar Kouyate for VAR to award the penalty that was converted by skipper, Bertrand Traore in the 57th minute.

The Stallions eventually gained their rhythm and piled on the pressure, but a resolute Mali defense kept them at bay, as the Eagles soar into the quarter-finals to face tournament hosts, Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday, 3 February in Bouake.

Quotes

Hubert Velud – Burkina Faso Coach

“I honestly have no one to blame. We lost

+against a better side. Mali have good players. We got some opportunities but also introduced new players. I was not surprised by the quality of this team. Very good quality with top level midfielders. Offensively, we saw a great team of Mali and we credit them.

“We will digest this defeat. We have to review and analyze the good and the bad during our time here.

The AFCON is very open for anyone to win. It is one of the best AFCONS in terms of football and organization. It is unfortunate that we will not participate any further”.

Eric Chelle – Mali Coach

“We need to be humble in our victory and continue with hard work. I am very happy for the players. They deserve to the victory because they are a group of hard workers. I think victory was well deserved but the lesson learnt is that 2-0 can be a dangerous score against a determined team.

“I have some friends and former teammates in our next opponent so this will also be an interesting fixture for me.

“We know that it will be difficult against them, but we will bring our quality and give it our best against them. I want to emphasize the importance of humility in this victory”.

Cote d’Ivoire stun holders Senegal in shootout to reach quarter-finals

Hosts Cote d’Ivoire pulled off a monumental upset by defeating defending champions Senegal 5-4 on penalties after extra time to advance to the TotalEneriges CAF Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

In front of a raucous home crowd at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Senegal made a blistering start and took the lead just 4 minutes in.

A superb cross from Sadio Mane found Habib Diallo, who calmly chested the ball down before firing a rocket into the top corner.

Stunned by conceding so early, the hosts gradually grew into the game with neat interplay in midfield between Franck Kessie and Jean Michael Seri.

Ibrahim Sangare posed a constant threat on the wing while strikers Sebastien Haller and Nicolas Pepe stretched Senegal’s defense.

The Elephants had the better of the first half, but despite several near misses, a Senegalese wall of Kalidou Koulibaly and Abdou Diallo repelled everything thrown at them. 0-1 at halftime.

Senegal almost doubled their lead early in the second half when a speculative Ismaila Sarr effort forced a fingertip save. But Cote d’Ivoire were unfazed and continued pressing.

The game turned on a pivotal 86th-minute moment. Pepe burst into the box and was clumsily brought down by Edouard Mendy.

After VAR reviewed the incident, Franck Kessie coolly sent Mendy the wrong way from the spot to equalize and send the home crowd into ecstasy.

Chances came and went for both sides in extra time, but the scores remained level. In the shootout, each side netted their first four penalties. But when Kalifa Coulibaly’s effort came off the upright, Kessie stepped up to smash home the winning kick, capping a remarkable turnaround for the hosts.

After a disastrous group stage, Cote d’Ivoire showed tremendous resilience and spirit to dethrone Senegal, who must relinquish their title. The Elephants march on, redemption complete.

Few gave the Elephants hope to enter this last 16 clash against star-studded Senegal.

But led by captain Serge Aurier, the spirited hosts fought until the end and sometimes rode their luck against profligate opponents.

This result blows the tournament wide open. The defending champions are out, and the unfancied hosts march on in dramatic style.

MATCH FACTS:

  • Côte d’Ivoire have played their 11th penalty shootout in the Africa Cup of Nations, more than any other team in the competition. They have won five of these 11 shootouts, with only Egypt having a higher tally (6).

  • Côte d’Ivoire has reached the quarter-finals of an Africa Cup of Nations edition for the 11th time in their history, with no team having played more quarter-finals in the competition (Ghana, Tunisia, and Nigeria also at 11 each).

  • Senegal will not be playing in the quarter-finals of an Africa Cup of Nations edition for the first time since 2015 (eliminated in the group stage). This is the seventh consecutive edition in which the title holder has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, the last team to reach this stage of the competition being Egypt in 2010.

  • Habib Diallo’s goal after 4 minutes was the earliest Côte d’Ivoire had conceded in an Africa Cup of Nations game since Rashidi Yekini’s goal against Nigeria in 1990 (third minute). It was also the earliest goal acknowledged by a host nation in an AFCON match since Ethiopia conceded against DR Congo in the 1968 semi-final (third minute).

  • Franck Kessié is the first Côte d’Ivoire player to score a penalty goal in the Africa Cup of Nations since Didier Drogba in 2006 against Morocco, and the first to do so in a knockout game since Lucien Kassi-Kouadio, also against Morocco in the match for the third place in the 1986 edition.

  • Sadio Mané has delivered his third assist in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the highest tally for a player from Senegal at a single edition since Opta collected this data (2010). Since his debut in the competition in 2015, he has been involved in seven goals in the knockout phase (3 goals, four assists), more than any other player.

  • Côte d’Ivoire midfielder Jean Michaël Seri has completed 95.5% of his passes against Senegal (63/66). Of the players who have attempted at least 60 passes in a game since 2010, only Anicet Abel, with Madagascar against Tunisia in the quarter-finals of the 2019 edition, has had a higher percentage in an Africa Cup of Nations knockout game (96.9%).

Cisse rues missed chance after Cote d’Ivoire heartbreak

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessie celebrates with forward Christian Kouame after scoring his team's first goal from the penalty spot during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2023 round of 16 football match between Senegal and Ivory Coast at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in YamoussoukroIvory Coast extended their perfect record against Senegal at the Afcon finals to three wins as they reached the quarter-finals in dramatic fashion

A dejected Senegal boss Aliou Cisse says it was “tough to see the players cry” in the locker room after their shock penalty shootout defeat by Cote d’Ivoire in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations last 16.

The reigning champions were dumped out 5-4 on penalties by the tournament hosts on Monday following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time.

“I am disappointed after this result, especially for our players. We came here to retain the title and play for our people,” rued Cisse.

The coach said losing in such fashion after dominating the match made the pain worse.

“It’s tough to see the players cry in the locker room. The match was strange and complicated; we could have won,” Cisse noted.

Senegal led until the 86th minute when Franck Kessie equalized from the penalty spot. And Cisse felt his side failed to manage the game well enough when it mattered most.

“We lost on penalties; we kept our lead until the last 5 minutes. I am disappointed after this defeat, especially after our performance and from the first match,” he lamented.

With Senegal’s trophy defense now over, Cisse acknowledged changes are inevitable as the team looks to rebuild.

“We need to make changes after this defeat; we’ll see what happens in the future. There is sorrow, and our players are sad, as is the Senegalese people,” the coach admitted.

However, Cisse took pride in Senegal’s undefeated group stage campaign. “We prepared well and let’s not forget we have 3 wins in 3 matches,” he added.

After falling short of retaining their title in dramatic fashion, Cisse knows Senegal must pick themselves up and work to bounce back stronger.

Cote d’Ivoire midfielder Jean-Michael Seri says despite the team advancing on penalties, what matters is the fact that they have qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Seri spoke after his side’s emphatic 5-4 victory following a 1-1 stalemate against Senegal, where he was awarded the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award in Yamoussoukro.

“We did not start the match well, and after we conceded the goal, we responded to that, and we took control of the match with a team performance. It doesn’t matter how we qualified; what matters is that we qualified”, said the midfielder.

“We were just calm. At halftime, the coach asked us to continue in the same way. We were excellent and united and fought for our nation. The important thing is that we qualified for the quarter-finals. Côte d’Ivoire qualified for the next round, which is the most important thing for me”, concluded the midfielder.
