As Guinea and DR Congo battle for semi-final spot

Credit: Allafrica.com

Guinea and DR Congo will clash on Friday with a coveted TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations semi-final place on the line when they meet at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé.

It will be the fourth TotalEnergies CAF AFCON encounter between the nations, with DR Congo yet to beat Guinea in three previous group stage meetings, including a 2-1 loss in their last meeting in 2004.

DR Congo has reached the quarter-finals without winning a single game in standard time.

But defender Gédéon Kalulu believes psychological victories can help them progress.

“Certainly, we can note two victories on the psychological front. The first is having beaten a top 5 side on penalties, and the second is not conceding many goals,” said Kalulu.

The return of critical players Naby Keita and Serhou Guirassy from injury is expected to boost Guinea.

“Naby and Serhou are getting better and better. They are two critical assets for our team. Their entries in previous matches were crucial for us,” noted Guinea midfielder Amadou Diawara.

With a first AFCON semi-final since 2015 on the line, Guinea striker Sory Kaba stressed the need for efficiency.

“Against a compact Congolese team, we must be rigorous and efficient. The team that makes the least mistakes will go through,” Kaba stated.

After a scrappy Round of 16 wins, both sides know a clinical performance will be required to keep their AFCON dreams alive and reach the final four.

WHAT THEY SAID

Kaba Diawara, Guinea’s coach, said, “We are ready for the battle, both mentally and physically. We entered this AFCON conditioned to play seven finals. If it comes to penalties, we will go for it.”

Sébastien Desabre, DR Congo’s coach, said, “The team is highly motivated. We know we can achieve more in this tournament, which, for me, is not the AFCON of surprises but of hard work. The boys are on a mission, and we will not give up under any circumstances.”

Statistics:

  • Mohamed Bayo has scored 2 of Guinea’s three goals in the Africa Cup of Nations 2023. He could become the first Guinean to score three goals in a single AFCON since Pascal Feindouno in 2006 (4).

  • Meschack Elia has been directly involved in 3 of DR Congo’s last four goals in the Africa Cup of Nations (1 goal, two assists). He is the only player for the Leopards to have both scored (1) and provided an assist (1) in the last two participations of DR Congo in the tournament (2019 and 2023).

Johnny Nelson reveals Gypsy King worry news

Ahead of Tyson Fury clash with Oleksandr Usyk fight

Johnny Nelson has revealed what he’s heard about Tyson Fury’s training camp ahead of his monstrous fight against Oleksandr Usyk, Nasir Jabbar reports for Sport Bible.

Fury is in Saudi Arabia preparing for his vast, undisputed showdown against Usyk next month.

The WBC champion meets the WBA (super), IBF, and WBO king in a massive fight to crown an undisputed world heavyweight champion.

The self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ has flown out many fighters to prepare him for his February 17 clash.

But cruiserweight knockout artist Jai Opetaia sparred just five rounds with Fury before returning to Australia amid reports he dropped the undefeated British star.

Following reports of Opetaia troubling Fury in training, Nelson has come out with some concerning news.

The former cruiserweight world champion has revealed he’s heard that Fury is ‘getting turned over in the gym.’

Speaking to Spencer Oliver on talkBOXING, Nelson said: “I’m hearing rumors of what’s happening in camp – I’m hearing that he’s getting turned over in the gym.

“So this thing about appetite when he’s in the gym, I mean, he got shown his a**e.”

The 57-year-old added: “I hear these things, and I’m thinking, has he taken his eye off the ball, or has time caught up with him?

“Regarding his last fight, I put that down to him disrespecting the man in front of him, and if you’re led to believe he had the best training camp, his legs had gone.

“I’d expect Tyson Fury to beat Oleksandr Usyk, but the Tyson Fury who boxed Ngannou in his last fight gets knocked out.

“If that Tyson Fury turns up, then it’s done; it’s over.

“I said, ‘the legs are gone’ line because I remember Tony Bellew saying it about David Haye, and at first I was like ‘what?’, but when I saw it, I knew what he was talking about.

“I might be saying something that might not be too popular – I expect him to win; I just think he dropped the ball in the last fight.

“These rumors I’m hearing, I hope they’re just rumors set about by him.”

Fury heads into his championship fight against Usyk, beating Francis Ngannou in an underwhelming victory.

He’ll look to return to his best when he faces the unbeaten Ukrainian in Riyadh.

Fifteen Best Deadline Day Signings

In Premier League History (Ranked)

Radu Dragusin at Old Trafford - January has become a firefighters’ window where the ‘big six’ disappear into the shadowsTottenham’s purchase of Radu Dragusin was the biggest Premier League deal of a very quiet January window Credit: The Telegraph – PA/Martin Rickett

The Premier League transfer window is always eventful, but these are the best moves ever to take place on Deadline Day, Daniel Hepburn reports for GiveMeSport.

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Deadline Day is typically manic, with teams worldwide eager to do business to improve their squads.
  •  Some Premier League legends, including Ashley Cole, Luis Suarez, and Wayne Rooney, were signed on Deadline Day.
  •  The other successful Deadline Day signings include Arsenal’s capture of Mesut Ozil and Dele Alli’s move to Tottenham.

It’s that time of the year once again, ladies and gentlemen! It is when every Premier League team will get one last chance to bolster their squads with all the planning of a husband buying their wife flowers from the petrol station on Valentine’s Day. That’s right, it’s Deadline Day!

It’s the final day to get deals across the line, but it’s like a game of football. A sheer rush of excitement thanks to your side finally plugging a gap or the gut-wrenching feeling when your favorite player ups and leaves for new pastures – it’s got it all. It’s football’s heritage, as Jose Mourinho would say.

While many teams will prefer to get their business done early to incorporate the new players into the squad, for others, good things come to those who wait. Need any proof? Don’t worry about it; GIVEMESPORT is here to give you a rundown of the 15 best Deadline-day signings in the history of the Premier League.

Ranking factors

When coming up with our list, we ensured we considered many different facets of what constitutes a successful transfer. However, given the nature of the list, some names could be considered controversial. This tip doesn’t scratch the surface of superb deadline-day deals. With the use of statistics and other findings through research, GIVEMESPORT considered the following aspects:

  • Fee
  • Stats
  • Longevity
  • Difference they made
  • Expectations
  • Success – respective of the club and their expectations
  • How they are viewed overall by those in the football world

The above criteria were considered with an apparent importance placed on how much a club shelled out. However, their prices were caveated, assuming the market and prices constantly fluctuate. Success, both collectively and on an individual basis that they’ve enjoyed since the move was taken on board, while the impact they made on the team, whether that be trophies or an increase in leadership and togetherness, was also looked at, while longevity and the initial expectations laid before them were considered, too. Have you taken everything (especially the ranking factors) on board? If so, what are you waiting for?

15Rafael van der Vaart – August 2010

Real Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur

Rafael van der Vaart

The term’ the streets won’t forget’ gets thrown around a lot these days, but forget the Michus, Adel Taarabt, and the Hatem Ben Arfa’s of the world; the streets of north London weren’t ready for Rafael van der Vaart’s arrival at White Hart Lane.

Arriving for around the £8 million mark in August 2010 thanks to the Dutchman’s move to Bayern Munich collapsing the day before, Van der Vaart’s two-year stint at Spurs will go down as one of the most beloved in Tottenham Hotspur history, who returned to Hamburg in 2012 in another Deadline Day move. He may have only played 76 times for the capital club, but he had a certain aura about him – an unforgettable one at that.

14Lucas Moura – January 2018

PSG to Tottenham Hotspur

MixCollage-30-Jan-2024-02-31-PM-4023

Mr. ’82 rated Lucas Moura on FIFA himself. When Neymar and Kylian Mbappe joined PSG in the summer of 2017, the writing was on the wall for the Brazilian winger that he might not be getting game time in the French capital.

Tottenham managed to swoop in with a £25 million bid halfway through the 2017/2018 season to help with their pursuit of Champions League football and their first piece of silverware since 2008 – and while he might have left the club with no trophies to his name, if it weren’t for Moura, the north Londoners wouldn’t have made the 2019 Champions League final. He was that important.

13Dele Alli – February 2015

MK Dons to Tottenham Hotspur

Dele Alli

It’s a hat-trick for Tottenham! What a performance! Seriously though, the level of outstanding business that Spurs have done on Deadline Day is awe-inspiring, with this deal being forgotten about due to Dele Alli immediately being loaned back to MK Dons upon his signing.

Dele eventually broke through into Tottenham’s first team in the 2015/2016 season and looked unstoppable with Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout, and while his career has suffered a downturn in recent years, getting one of the most exciting young players in England – for around £5 million mark – is always going to be a good piece of business.

12Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – January 2018

Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

I stayed north of the capital but traveled to the red half of the area for the most expensive deadline-day transfer (at the time of writing). Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was one of the most in-demand strikers during his time at Borussia Dortmund, so when Arsenal forked over £50 million, Premier League defenses watched on in horror.

Doing the number 14 shirt justice during his four years at the Emirates Stadium, Aubameyang may have left Arsenal in a cloud of controversy, but he did leave with an FA Cup, a Community Shield, and a Premier League Golden Boot, having kept up with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in 2019.

11Robbie Keane – August 2002

Leeds United to Tottenham Hotspur

MixCollage-30-Jan-2024-02-35-PM-112

Hello again, Tottenham; good to see you again! The turn of the millennium was a busy time for Robbie Keane. He broke through at Wolves, got Coventry City to break the record for a British teenager, spent six months at Inter Milan, helped Leeds United get to a Champions League semi-final before joining Spurs for less money than what Leeds paid Inter for him.

Signing on Deadline Day in August 2002, then-manager Glenn Hoddle said Spurs could become Keane’s spiritual home for many years. Judging by the fact that the Irishman played over 300 games and scored 91 goals in his two stints with the club, perhaps Hoddle knew what he was talking about.

10Dimitar Berbatov – September 2008

Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United

Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov

Finally, someone is leaving Tottenham rather than joining them. 2008’s summer Deadline Day was eventful: Manchester City got taken over by their current owners and signed Robinho just because they could. Marouane Fellaini’s afro arrived in the Premier League in a move that was very close to getting on this list, and then there’s this.

Dimitar Berbatov was almost sure to go to Manchester United, only for Spurs to accept a bid from Manchester City, only for Berbatov to turn around and say, ‘I don’t want to play for you.’ Classic. Spurs got just over £30 million from the Red Devils for the Bulgarian striker, which they used to fund the signing of Roman Pavlyuchenko, a move that was not even close to getting on this list.

Dimitar Berbatov – Tottenham and Man Utd Stats
Club Tottenham Man Utd

9Mesut Ozil – August 2013

Real Madrid to Arsenal

Mesut Ozil

Arsenal fans had been desperate for a big-name signing for years but were constantly told that the club was still paying off the loan they used to help build the Emirates Stadium. Then, in 2013, the owners found over £40 million down the side of the couch and bought one of the best playmakers in the world: Mesut Ozil.

It was an accurate statement signing that upset Cristiano Ronaldo, who didn’t want Real Madrid to sell the German, and for good reason. Arsenal fans could argue that Ozil never reached the heights he did in Spain, but he was simply unplayable when he was in top form.

8Mikel Arteta – August 2011

Everton to Arsenal

Arsenal's Mikel Arteta in action vs Everton

A man who could qualify for this list for two Deadline Day moves as Mikel Arteta’s initial loan move to Everton from Real Sociedad led to the Spaniard joining The Toffees permanently in 2005. However, the signing of current Arsenal manager, Arteta, by the Emirates Stadium-based outfit in 2011 pips that move to the post.

Following Arsenal’s 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in August 2011, The Gunners brought the Spaniard in for stability in the midfield. His five years at the club led to the Spaniard becoming a huge fan favorite, so much so that when he was announced as the new Arsenal manager in 2019, he was welcomed back with open arms.

7Carlos Tevez & Javier Mascherano – August 2006

Corinthians to West Ham United

Mascherano Tevez

Ah yes, when West Ham fans worldwide looked at the news and said, ‘Excuse me?’ Two of the most exciting young players in South America at that time – Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano – made the jump to the Premier League, but not to the typical English heavyweights in Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea, but to the Hammers instead.

Arguably one of the most controversial moves in Premier League history due to the move being illegal, neither man was at Upton Park for long, as Mascherano made the move to Liverpool in January 2007, while Tevez stayed long enough to relegate Sheffield United before moving to Manchester United.

6John Stones – January 2013

Barnsley to Everton

Everton's John Stones vs Stevenage

It’s the cheapest move on the list and could increase in the next few years if John Stones remains one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Having already attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester City, Everton stepped in and took a chance on the Barnsley defender in 2013, and what a gamble it ended up being.

In his three-and-a-half years at Goodison Park, stones eventually became an immovable object in the heart of the Everton defense, leading to Manchester City making Stones the second-most expensive defender of all time in 2016. What a brilliant move for the Toffees.

5Hugo Lloris – August 2012

Lyon to Tottenham Hotspur

MixCollage-30-Jan-2024-02-36-PM-2879

One last trip to the white half of north London for the best piece of Deadline Day business they have ever done. Back in 2012, Hugo Lloris had already established himself as the best goalkeeper in France, and with the club bringing in Clint Dempsey on the same day, it seemed like the dawn of a new era at White Hart Lane.

Winning the 2018 World Cup as the captain of France, reaching the 2019 Champions League final as the captain of Spurs, and with nearly 450 appearances at the club, it’s safe to say that getting rid of three goalkeepers in the 2012 summer transfer window was a risk that paid off for Tottenham.

4Ashley Cole – August 2006

Arsenal to Chelsea

Ashley Cole Jose Mourinho

There have been sagas, but nothing compares to the ‘Cashley Cole’ saga. It was a situation that lasted for over a year, with the defender wanting to leave Arsenal in 2005. However, it ramped up in the lead-up to the 2006/2007 season.

From ‘trembling with anger’ over being offered £55,000 a week to William Gallas threatening to score own goals if he wasn’t allowed to leave Chelsea, Ashley Cole and Gallas went opposite directions on Deadline Day in 2006. However, given that Cole went on to win many more trophies at Chelsea than Gallas did at Arsenal, ‘Cashley’ makes the list.

3Claude Makelele – August 2003

Real Madrid to Chelsea

Claude Makelele

You know a signing was successful when the player left your club, and people named an entire position after them. Much like the Ozil above move, Real Madrid fans and players weren’t happy when, during the Galacticos era of the club, a player like Claude Makelele left the club to move to the Premier League.

While some fans might think that the Saudi Pro League is on a spending spree in 2023, Chelsea went on a spending spree before it was cool in 2003. Even though they splashed the cash on future legends like Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, and Petr Cech, the legendary Jose Mourinho Chelsea team of the 2000s wouldn’t have worked as well as it did if it wasn’t for Makelele.

2Luis Suárez – January 2011

Ajax to Liverpool

Luis Suarez celebrates

Easily the most excellent January transfer in Premier League history was overshadowed by Andy Carroll. Luis Suarez broke into the public eye during the 2010 World Cup, terrorizing defenses in the Netherlands since 2007. But because he signed for Liverpool on the same day as the Carroll transfer, he was largely forgotten about.

However, the three-and-a-half years in the Premier League for the Uruguayan talisman was not ignored. It was controversial, but he produced one of the single best seasons in league history and all of that came from a Deadline Day signing in 2011. The Uruguayan was practically unstoppable, especially in that season. Come on, you know which one.

Ever since Wayne Rooney scored that goal against Arsenal in 2002, Everton fans knew it was only a matter of time before a top team swooped in for the country’s most exciting teenager. Everton did try to keep hold of ‘Wazza,’ but the allure of Manchester United was just too much.

A transfer that only ended up happening on the final day of the 2004 summer transfer window due to Bill Kenwright wanting more money for the teenager, Rooney went on to become Manchester United’s record goalscorer, won every trophy he could win, and was undoubtedly the most excellent Deadline Day transfer in Premier League history.

Twenty-two-meter titans to showdown in Madrid

Countdown to the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold final in Madrid is on

The countdown to the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold final in Madrid has started. On Friday, 23 February, some of Earth’s best track and field athletes will show up at the CDM Gallur in the Spanish capital, and the throwers will not be left behind.

Two-time world indoor champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand leads a strong field for the men’s shot put. The 2017 world champion and double Olympic bronze medalist, who holds the Oceania record of 22.90m, will feature in a contest where four athletes have personal bests over the 22-meter-barrier.

Walsh will clash with three different continental champions: European indoor champion Zane Weir of Italy (22.44m); South American, Pan American, and Ibero-American champion Darlan Romani of Brazil (22.61m, area record); and African champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi of Nigeria (21.80m, national record).

The field also includes Jamaican record holder Rajindra Campbell, who knows how to win in Madrid – he did at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet in 2023, where he set his personal best of 22.22m.

The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 quarter-finals are set to serve some exciting fixtures across the three host cities.

The round of 16 provided some exciting games coupled with shocks, and some of the favorites ended up exiting the competition, including defending champions and 2022 World Cup semi-finalist Morocco.

Here are the games to pay attention to in the quarter-finals and how things are expected to turn out.

Nigeria v Angola

The Super Eagles will face Angola in the opening quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 on Friday, February, at the famous Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

Angola hopes to continue their fairytale against one of the tournament’s favorites, Nigeria.

In this fixture, Nigeria’s persistent defensive unit of William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi will be tested by Angola’s forwards Jacinto Dala, Gilberto, and Mabululu.

The game will be played at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Friday, February 2.

D.R Congo v Guinea

D.R. Congo, who are yet to win a game in the competition, will have Guinea to deal with in the quarter-finals.

Mohamed Bayo has twice been the savior for Guinea in the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023. He scored against Cameroon to help them secure a point and was on target against Equatorial Guinea in round 16.

With the 2009 CHAN success in Cotê d’Ivoire in sight, D.R. Congo will give it their all against an equally motivated Guinean side.

The game will played on Friday, February 2, at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.

Mali v Cotê d’Ivoire

The host performed a solid performance to eliminate defending champion Senegal on penalties in round 16.

This followed a disappointing end to their group stage campaign, where they lost to Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea and conceded five goals.

Cotê d’Ivoire have failed to score from open play in their last three games and will be hoping to make amends with the return of Sébastien Haller upfront.

Despite a shaky performance in the group stage, Mali put up an improved performance against Burkina Faso in round 16.

The game is on February 3 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake.

Cape Verde v South Africa

Cape Verde, unbeaten, will play South Africa, who eliminated 2022 World Cup semi-finalist Morocco in the round of 16.

Unlike South Africa, whose results have been inconsistent, the Blue Sharks have had a smooth run throughout the competition.

Hugo Broos will count on Evidence Makgopa, Percy Tau, and Themba Zwane to deliver against Cape Verde.

Though challenging, Cape Verde has seen it all against experienced countries and has had their way through.

The game is on February 3 at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.

Francis Ngannou’s current incredible physique

Reveals his intent to make an impact in boxing ahead of his clash with Anthony Joshua

  •  Former UFC champ Francis Ngannou is in incredible shape for his fight with Anthony Joshua, signaling his intent to make an impact in boxing.
  •  Ngannou is confident and determined to beat Joshua, even claiming he will be the one taking his soul.
  •  This fight is significant for both fighters – if Ngannou wins, he establishes himself as a threat in heavyweight boxing, while a Joshua win could lead to a fight against the winner of Usyk vs Fury

Ngannou vs Joshua is several weeks away yet, but images of the former UFC champion in training have emerged, and he’s looking insane, Mark Matthew reports for Give Me Sport.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou looks to be in the shape of his life as he prepares for his fight with Anthony Joshua in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is slated to take place on the 8th of March.

The former MMA superstar turned heavyweight boxer is looking shredded, signaling his intent to make an impact within the boxing world. This will be the Cameroonian’s second professional boxing fight after he controversially lost to Tyson Fury in a split decision in October 2023. This was despite knocking down the WBC champion in round three and coming across a lot better than his opponent on the night.

Ngannou is set to fight Joshua after AJ’s proposed fight with Deontay Wilder following the Americans’ defeat to Joseph Parker on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card just two days before Christmas. On the same night, one fight later, Joshua beat Swede Otto Wallin via corner retirement.

What has been said by Ngannou & Joshua

Ngannou is very clearly full of confidence and desire to beat Joshua, and during an interview with The High-Performance Podcast, he made some bold claims, including a chilling remark.

He said: “Never say never. Nothing is impossible. We don’t know the strength of Anthony Joshua. Even though I don’t believe he has that strength, we will find out. In two months, we’re going to find out. I’m going to be the one taking his soul.”

This is shaping into an intriguing fight with a great deal at stake. Should Ngannou win, he would establish himself as an actual threat to heavyweight boxers and could set himself up for a proper career. However, should Joshua win, it could provide him with a pathway to fighting the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Fury, and we all know how long the boxing world has been waiting for a fight between Britain’s two most prominent boxers of the last decade. Joshua, however, has said he is entirely focused on his fight with Ngannou.

He told MMA Hour: “Let me repeat this: I’m not focusing on that. I’m going to take my mind off. I have to draw it back: Ngannou is my undisputed title fight. That’s the mentality I have to have.

“Ngannou is my undisputed fight. Because you’re only as good as your last fight, and I greatly respect him. He ain’t easy money. He’s a hard night’s work. And you know what’s crazy? So am I. I’m a hard night’s work for anyone. So let’s go, it’s going to be fireworks.”

That typical AJ bravado still shines through, and it is a massive shift in attitude towards a fight with Ngannou, given that at one point, he described a fight with Ngannou as a “gimmick.”

He respects Ngannou as a boxer more than he did just a few weeks ago, and you have to wonder what has changed (money, it’s probably money). Regardless, this should be an exciting fight, and quite clearly, both Joshua and Ngannou are massively up for it.

Walsh and Diaz highlight field events in Madrid

Two-time world indoor shot put champion Tom Walsh and Spanish triple jump record-holder Jordan Diaz Fortun will be among the star attractions at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold final in Madrid on 23 February.

The 2017 world champion Walsh holds the outdoor (22.90m) and indoor (22.31m) Oceania records. He ended 2023 with a season’s best of 22.69m, the second-best performance of his career, and opened his 2024 campaign with a 21.17m effort in Ostrava.

He will be one of four 22-metre performers competing in Madrid. World indoor champion and South American record-holder Darlan Romani of Brazil is always a formidable opponent, and so is European indoor champion Zane Weir of Italy.

Rajindra Campbell, who holds the Jamaican record of 22.22m, and African record-holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi are also in the line-up. The meeting record of 21.91m, set by Konrad Bukowiecki in 2022, could come under threat as athletes test their shape ahead of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24.

Elsewhere in the field events, Jordan Diaz Fortun will return to the scene of his Spanish indoor triple jump record. The former world U18 and U20 champion jumped 17.59m in Madrid last year, just eight months after setting a national outdoor record of 17.87m.

Reveals therapy after back-to-back defeats

The Scouser was on an impressive run before losing her last twoThe Scouser was on an impressive run before losing her last two

Molly McCann admits she would ‘call it a day’ in the UFC if she were to suffer a third consecutive defeat, Joshua Rogers reports for Talk Sport.

‘Meatball’ makes her UFC strawweight debut in a rematch with Diana Belbita on February 3 after suffering back-to-back defeats against Erin Blanchfield and Julija Stoliarenko.

The 33-year-old Scouser has dropped down a weight class for the upcoming bout and is desperate to get back to winning ways.

However, another loss could spell the end for her UFC career as she’s threatened to walk away from the promotion if the fight doesn’t go her way.

When asked how important it was for her to pick up a win against Belbita, McCann exclusively told talkSPORT: “It’s crucial isn’t it?

“I think three [defeats] on the bounce for me, I’d be calling it a day.”

The former Cage Warriors champion went 3-3 through her first six UFC contests.

McCann also put together an impressive three-fight win streak between 2021-2022 that included back-to-back finishes via spinning elbow.

That spectacular run was snapped at UFC 281 in November 2022 after a crushing first round submission defeat to Blanchfield.

The former flyweight then suffered a second consecutive first-round defeat when Stoliarenko forced her to submit during their bout in July last year.

Her last win came at the O2 Arena in London in July 2023 with a TKO victory over Hannah GoldyGetty: Her last win came at the O2 Arena in London in July 2023 with a TKO victory over Hannah Goldy

The Liverpudlian admits that coming back from those defeats has been hard, and revealed she’s sought out the help of sports therapists after receiving negative comments and abuse from trolls online.

“I had a bit of therapy to be honest with you,” ‘Meatball’ said in response to how she’s mentally overcome recent setbacks.

“I’ve been doing a bit of mind mapping and sports PTSD therapy because I was noticing coming up to fight week that I was just getting very nervous and anxious because of the external factors of trolls online.”

However, after working through things, McCann says she now feels ‘calm’ and ‘ready’ heading into her strawweight clash with Belbita.

“It’s a lot to deal with when you put so much pressure on yourself to be the best in the world and then you get your a*** handed to you – it’s not always the best,” she said.

“You’ve got to go away, reassess, and see what you need to do to fix that, and that’s where I am.”

McCann and Belbita previously fought in 2019 at a UFC Fight Night card in Boston.

Molly won via unanimous decision in what was the Romanian’s UFC debut and now the pair have decided to run it back at a lower weight class.

“We’ve fought before at the weight class above on her debut,” McCann explained.

“When I dropped to this weight class she said can we run it back and I’ve never turned down a fight.

“Maybe that’s why my record is what it is – I’ll fight anyone on any given day, and stylistically for me, this one where I can shine.”

Previewing the fight, McCann said she expects her opponent to ‘run at her from the bell’ and have a ‘consistent pace coming forward’.

‘The Warrior Princess’ is 4-6 since entering the UFC but 2-2 since dropping down to strawweight.

Her last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Karolina Kowalkiewicz in October 2023.

McCann vs Belbita goes down on Saturday night at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas on the UFC Fight Night: Dolidze vs. Imavov card.
