Mikael Lawal gets March 31 ‘Bad Blood’ date

To go up against Viddal Riley, who steps up in class for the cruiserweight clash

Mikael Lawal

Cruiserweight rivals Viddal Riley and Mikael Lawal collide in a special bet365 Wildcard contest as part of BOXXER’s bumper ‘Bad Blood’ bill at The O2 in London on Sunday, March 31st, live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and Peacock in the USA, WBN Ringside reports.

Riley (10-0, 6 KOs) returns to action following a shut-out points win over Nathan Quarless to capture the English Cruiserweight Title last September at York Hall. The talented Tottenham man has set his sights on the big fights in a stacked domestic division and can expect his toughest career test when he faces London rival Lawal.

Lawal (17-1, 11 KOs) will be looking to get back to winning ways, having lost his British Cruiserweight Title to Isaac Chamberlain in October. The heavy-handed fighter from Shepherd’s Bush has the chance for redemption as he gets back into the domestic mix with another high-profile contest against undefeated opposition.

Viddal Riley said: “I look forward to the first notable name in my career being ticked off. I respect Lawal as a former British champion, and as we know, that’s a goal of mine, so this is a perfect level check.”

Mikael Lawal said: “I’ve been legit; my journey in this sport is well documented. I’m just here to work and take care of business.”

BOXXER Founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “Viddal Riley vs Mikael Lawal is another exciting addition to an already action-packed night of boxing. Credit to both men for taking this fight. Viddal Riley is taking a serious step up against a dangerous fighter in Mikael Lawal, who has everything to prove following his defeat to Isaac Chamberlain. It is a wildcard contest. I expect an all-action fight between the Londoners on Sunday, March 31st at The O2.”

Unbeaten heavyweight rivals Fabio Wardley and Frazer Clarke clash in a ‘Bad Blood’ showdown for the British and Commonwealth Titles on Sunday, March 31st, at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and Peacock in the USA.

Florian Marku and Chris Kongo settle their simmering welterweight rivalry as part of a stacked undercard that also features future boxing superstar Ben Whittaker, the return of Alen ‘The Savage’ Babic against Steve Robinson, and rising super middleweight contender Callum Simpson.

Tickets, priced from just £30, are available now via BOXXER.com.

Guadalupe Bautista will travel to Canada to defend her World Boxing Association junior flyweight title on April 27 against local Sara Haghighat Joo. The about will take place at the Toronto Casino Resort and will be the night’s main event, Jesús Milano reports for The WBA.

Bautista, 35, is the champion and will try to retain her crown despite being a visitor. The Mexico City native will be making the third defense of her belt, which she won in 2020 when she defeated Nora Cardoza.

In September 2021, she made her first defense, defeating Alma Meraz Rodriguez, and her second was against Gabriela Sanchez in 2022. It should be noted that during that time, Bautista remained active and fought even though the belt was not at stake in some of them.

Haghighat Joo is an undefeated fighter who has been going strong since her debut in 2022. A 29-year-old fighter with good technique, she is fast finding herself with a great opportunity and will try to take advantage of her tools and the fact that she is at home to surprise the champion and take the title.

Bautista has a record of 23 wins, 11 losses, and two draws, in addition to 6 knockouts. Haghighat Joo has three wins and is undefeated.

Otabek Kholmatov and Raymond Ford will battle for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight belt on March 2 at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, Jesús Milano reports for The WBA.

Both undefeated fighters will fight for the pioneering body’s 126-pound title, which is currently without an owner after former champion Leigh Wood decided to move up in class and vacate it.

Kholmatov is number one in the rankings and was called to fight for the crown. The Uzbek is a strong and intelligent fighter who is 25 years old and is a great knockout who combines that power with good boxing and an excellent IQ in the ring.

Meanwhile, Ford is a 24-year-old southpaw guard fighter who has made a name for himself in the division thanks to his great fights and is ranked No. 2. The American has defeated the likes of Jessie Magdaleno, Richard Medina, Samaria Luka, among others, victories that have brought him to this significant occasion.

The fight will be an evenly matched contest between two young rivals looking to establish themselves, and on paper, it seems like a 50/50 for both boxers.

Kholmatov has 12 wins, 11 of them by knockout. Ford, meanwhile, has 14 wins, one draw, and seven KOs.

As Clara Lescurat stakes her belt against the Mexican challenger in Buenos Aires

Regina Chavez

Nineteen-year-old Mexico challenger Regina Chavez aims to deploy the shock sucker punch as her major gameplan when she takes on Clara Lescurat for the Argentinian’s World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight title on Saturday, February 24, at the Casino de Buenos Aires in the Argentine.

According to the WBA, Lescurat is up for the third defense of her title against the lesser-known Mexican in a venue in her home terrain.

The champion, 35, snatched the belt by defeating Maribel Ramirez with a unanimous decision victory in June 2022 in Buenos Aires. She had a successful defense against Mexican Nayeli Gil last October 28, 2022, and again in May 2023 when she beat Brazilian challenger Daniela De Jesus Aguiar in France.

Should she topple the champion next week, the teen challenger has everything to gain. The Mexican girl is riding on the wave of the crest of a three-fight winning streak that could propel her to win the most vital fight of her career, which she will try to use the surprise factor.

Lescurat is unbeaten over nine bouts, with four ending in knockouts, while Chavez has won seven of her fights against three defeats, three draws, and one knockout.

Julio Cesar Martinez goes for more glories

Originally scheduled to duel last December before visa issues for Martinez scuttled the bout, WBC Flyweight World Champion Julio Cesar Martinez is set to attempt his sixth defense of his belt against skilled top flyweight contender Angelino Cordova in a 12-round battle, World Boxing News ringside reports.

Trained by the renowned Eddy Reynoso, Martinez (20-2, 15 KOs) first captured his flyweight world title with a ninth-round stoppage of Cristofer Rosales in his stateside debut in December 2019. The 29-year-old has gone on to defend the title five times, besting previously unbeaten opponents Jay Harris and Samuel Carmona, while most recently stopping Ronal Batista in May. A native of Mexico City, Martinez’s only blemish since a split-decision loss in his pro debut was a decision loss to future Hall of Famer Roman Gonzalez in March 2022.

“I’m ready to give it my all in training camp for this fight,” said Martinez. “I want all of the big fights and big prizes this year. My plan is to earn this win on March 30 and end up with my hand raised. Then I’m going for all the belts, no matter who I have to face. I’m going to be the last man standing.”

The 28-year-old Cordova (18-0-1, 12 KOs) earned a career-best victory in his last outing, as he bested former world champion Angel Acosta on his way to a 10-round unanimous decision victory last April. A native of Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, Cordova of Cotto Promotions has yet to taste defeat since debuting in 2017, with a draw in just his fourth fight as the only blemish. He made his U.S. debut in June 2022, defeating Axel Aragon Vega by decision before the triumph over Acosta.

“I’m very thankful that this fight is on and confirmed,” said Cordova. “My team did a great job making sure that this fight was rescheduled, and I’m thrilled it’s part of a huge card like this. I’m excited to finally face Martinez on March 30. The only thing on my mind is becoming the new WBC world champion.”

Givi MATCHARASHVILI (GEO) vs. Ibrahim CIFTCI (TUR)

14:10: Top match between Vazgen TEVANYAN (ARM) and Gazdhimurad RASHIDOV (AIN). Rashidov was called passive, which gave Tevanyan the first point, but Rashidov hit an arm-trap and rolled to make it 4-1. The second period saw Tevanyan score a takedown and step out. Rashidov held a 4-4 criteria lead, and despite Tevanyan trying hard to score, Rashidov managed to hold on to the win.

13:55: Frank CHAMIZO (ITA) is into the semifinals of 79kg. He beats Orkhan ABBASOV (AZE) 6-5 in the quarterfinals. Once again, it was Chamizo’s defense that made the difference. Abbasov scored a takedown and then a step out. But Chamizo got a takedown and a point for Abbasov’s passivity. Abbasov had Chamizo in all sorts of trouble, but the Italians’ defense saved him from a takedown. Abbasov was cautioned for fleeing when Chamizo scored a step out. Azerbaijan challenged the fleeing call but lost. Abbasov did score a takedown but failed to change the winner.

13:45: Iszmail MUSZUKAJEV (HUN) is toying with his opponents. After building a 6-0 lead against Marc DIETSCHE (SUI), he hits a four-point throw to finish the match 10-0—perhaps the most casual four-pointer you will see.

13:40: World champion Akhmed USMANOV (AIN) got the first point for Georgios KOUGIOUMTSIDIS (GRE) passivity and hit a big four-pointer to lead 5-0. He added a takedown, while Kougioumtsidis could not get a reversal and takedown. Usmanov moves into the semifinal with a 7-4 win.

13:30: Magomedkhabib KADIMAGOMEDOV (AIN) hits a massive throw for five and then a turn to beat Ramazan SARI (TUR) 10-0 and move into the 79kg semifinal. He will face the winner of Orkhan ABBASOV (AZE) and Frank CHAMIZO (ITA).

13:10: Batyrbek TCAKULOV (SVK) and Givi MATCHARASHVILI (GEO) move into the 97kg quarterfinals. Tcakulov defeated Robert BARAN (POL), while Matcharashvili dominated Lukas KRASAUSKAS (LTU) 13-2.

12:55: Arsen HARUTYUNYAN (ARM) takes just two minutes to beat Kamil KERYMOV (UKR) 10-0 at 57kg and advance to this evening’s semifinal. Harutyunyan is looking for his fourth European title.

12:40: Vazgen TEVANYAN (ARM) is a different beast in the second period. He trailed Krzysztof BIENKOWSKI (POL) 2-0 but hit a beautiful four-pointer in the second before adding a takedown. He wins 7-2. Next up for Tevanyan is Rashidov.

12:20: Gadzhimurad RASHIDOV (AIN), returning to the international scene for the first time since the Tokyo Olympics, begins with a solid 6-0 win over Andre CLARKE (GER). His defense still looks solid.

Noon: Frank CHAMIZO (ITA) has more action in his second match as he beats Erik REINBOK (EST) 6-0 at 79kg. In the same weight category, Georgios KOUGIOUMTSIDIS (GRE) holds off Oleksii DOMANYTSKYI (UKR) 7-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

11:50: Israil KASUMOV (AIN) was a late entry to the European Championships, but his journey may have finished early. He drops his first match 4-3 to Kanan HEYBATOV (AZE) at 70kg.

11:45: 65kg world champion Iszmail MUSZUKAJEV (HUN) is wrestling at 70kg, and he takes his good time to win the first match. Up against Egzon XHONI (KOS), Muszukajev wins 11-0.

11:30: Little upset on Mat C as Erik THIELE (GER) beats Magomedgadji NUROV (MKD) 4-3 at 97kg. He hit an arm throw for four points when trailing 3-0. Batyrbek TCAKULOV (SRB) finishes his about against Benjamin HONIS (ITA) 10-0 in 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

11:15: On Mat B, Iakub SHIKHDZHAMALOV (ROU) and Pouria TAHERKHANI (GER) wrestle it about, and Shikhdzhamalov wins 4-4 after a late takedown. On Mat C, Magomedkhabib KADIMAGOMEDOV (AIN) has an easy 4-0 over Miroslav KIROV (BUL).

11:00: First big clash of the day! Hetik CABOLOV (SRB) and Frank CHAMIZO (ITA) are coming up on Mat A at 79kg. Chamizo is warned multiple times for passivity. He was put on the activity clock as well. Cabolov led 1-0 at the break. Chamizo put on the clock again in the second period, but he scored a takedown this time before the clock expired. He was happy to play out the remaining time and win 2-1.

10:30: A blockbuster day is on the cards at the European Championships. The 79kg weight class has multiple world and European medalists competing. 65kg will see Vazgen TEVANYAN (ARM) and Gazdhimurad RASHIDOV (AIN).

South Korea sacks Jurgen Klinsmann

South Korea have parted ways with manager Jurgen Klinsmann after their disappointing exit at the Asian Cup, where they were among the favorites to lift the trophy, Express UK reports.

South Korea has decided to let go of their manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, following a disappointing performance at the Asian Cup. The team, which had performed well in the 2022 World Cup, fell short against Jordan in the semi-finals. A clash between squad members, including Spurs captain Son Heung-min and Paris Saint-Germain’s Lee Kang-in, added to the difficulties. “We’ve reached a consensus that Klinsmann cannot exercise his leadership as national team head coach for various reasons and that a leadership change is necessary,” said Hwangbo Kwan from the Korea Football Association. Klinsmann, who took over from Paulo Bento in February 2023, had started well with a victory over Bahrain but struggled in subsequent matches.

The first group game was the only one Klinsmann’s team managed to win within 90 minutes. They had to rely on penalties against Saudi Arabia in round 16, and an extra-time goal from Son helped them beat Australia in the quarter-finals.

However, the match against Jordan proved too challenging. Despite being ranked 64 places lower globally, Jordan secured a 2-0 victory, advancing to the final where Qatar, the hosts, defeated them.

“Klinsmann has failed to display managerial capability and leadership expected of a national head coach in areas ranging from tactics and personnel management to work attitude and others required to bring about competitiveness to the team,” said the KFA president in the statement confirming Klinsmann’s departure. His tenure ended much earlier than his contract, which was supposed to run until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Regarding the disagreement with Son, PSG’s young player Lee made a statement on social media. “It was reported that I had an altercation with Son ahead of the Asian Cup semi-final,” the 22-year-old wrote.

“I have caused great disappointment to all those football fans who support the national team. I am so sorry. I should have listened to the older players and apologized for not showing a good attitude.

“I apologize to the many people who are disappointed in me. I know how invested fans are in me as a player. From now on, I will try to support the senior players and become a better player and person.”

Every point is crucial – Kohler

Our team has players with great experience and are good at dealing with pressure- The Devils’ boss

Marcel Kohler Photo credit: CAFonline

Marcel Kohler, who guided the Red Devils to a record-extending 11th title, spoke on Thursday, 15 February, ahead of Friday’s group stage catch-up fixture with CR Belouizdad of Algeria at the 5 July 1962 Olympic Stadium in Algiers, CAFonline reports.

“Our team has players with great experience and good at dealing with pressure. I am confident in their ability to get a victory away from him, especially since the clubs in the group have become close in the rankings. At this stage, all points are crucial, and we need not to drop any,” said Kohler.

The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Match Day 5 resumes next weekend; however, due to Ahly’s FIFA Club World Cup schedule, they will play their Match Day 4 on Friday against the Belouizdad.

The defending champions are tied on 5 points with Tanzania’s Young Africans, who have played a game extra, while hosts of the fixture, Belouizdad, will be looking at toppling the defending champions, with just a point separating them from Ahly and Young Africans.

Joining Kohler in Thursday’s press conference was defender Rami Rabia, who boldly said:

“Our goal is to get the three points. We strive to win every match. We do not think about any other factors but the game itself. We have the experience of this competition. There is no such thing as overconfidence. The technical staff and players deal with the match very seriously to achieve their goals and make the fans happy.”

David Rudisha is the chosen one

Announced as the ambassador for WIC Glasgow 24

Middle distance legend David Rudisha has been named the World Athletics ambassador for the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24, which will be held from March 1-3, World Athletics reports.

The Kenyan great is a double Olympic gold medallist and two-time world champion over 800m. He is familiar with Glasgow as he competed there in 2014 for the Commonwealth Games, where he earned silver.

“I look forward to returning to Glasgow for this major competition on our calendar. I am excited,” he said.

“Sport has made me who I am today, and anything related to sport makes me feel thrilled. I am looking forward to meeting the fans and promoting the sport.”

Rudisha has other fond memories of competing on UK soil; the most iconic performance of his career – his world record-breaking performance of 1:40.91 – came when winning Olympic gold in London in 2012.

Now aged 35, Rudisha is delighted to take up an ambassador role for the first global championships in 2024.

“I feel honored,” said Rudisha, who competed at six global championships, winning gold at five. “As an athlete, anything I can do to inspire younger athletes to win medals on the world stage makes me feel special.

“The 2014 Commonwealth Games was exceptional; I have beautiful memories of my experience in Glasgow. The people were very kind and supportive. I got silver in that race, but it was clear that the crowd supported and cheered for every athlete, regardless of the position they finished.”

As a double Olympic champion in the No.1 Olympic sport, Rudisha knows just how important it is for athletes to get off to a strong start this year ahead of the Paris 2024 Games.

“The Olympics is at the helm of any sport,” he said. “To participate in the Olympics means a lot. It’s not always easy, so I wish athletes the best as they work hard for this season, try to make their name, and write their history in this sport.”
