After 98 long years of fighting for boxing

The World Boxing Association (WBA) mourns the passing of one of its most illustrious and longtime members, the Panamanian Manuel Landero. Born amid the Kuna revolution on June 17, 1925, in David, Chiriqui greatly supported the sport and contributed many things throughout his life, WBA reports.

He was a man of great character and determination, evidently because of the context in which he was born and raised. Only three months before his birth, a peace treaty had been signed with the Panamanian Indians, who were promised better treatment and tremendous respect for their traditions; they were offered protection and rights while they laid down their arms and pledged to abide by the laws of the State, withdrawing the declaration of independence that had been made.

Landero was the son of Luis and Isabel, who gave their son the best for his future. His home formation and education were critical to his growth and development, which would also lead him to the possibility of holding essential positions in different fields.

He was Deputy Director of the Electoral Tribunal, Regional Director of Commerce and Industry, Provincial Director of the Sports Institute, Deputy Director of the Superintendence of the Chiriqui Railroad, and Director of General Services of the Ministry of Public Works of Chiriqui.

In 1967, he formally joined the WBA, and in 1986, he became a board of directors member. He was the supervisor of many title fights. In addition, he was part of the protocol and awards commission of the CAC Games in 1970 and the Bolivarian Games in 1972.

A tireless collaborator in pursuing innovations and improvements in the WBA, he also stood out as the magazine’s creator, summarizing the activities distributed at the annual conventions for many years.

He was always important in the organization’s decision-making and worked until the final years of his life.

The WBA family is mourning and extends its condolences to the family and everyone around Manuel Landero. Thank you very much, my friend; rest in peace.

To arrive in the North African nation with two regional titles

World Boxing Association

According to Jesús Milano of The WBA, on March 1st, a big event will occur in Libya where the World Boxing Association (WBA) will be present with two regional title fights.

The Frenchman of Moroccan origin, Khalil El Hadri, will face the Tanzanian Oscar Duge for the WBA African super featherweight title in a 10-round. That will mean an excellent opportunity for both of them and a projection guarantee for the winner.

On the other hand, French Bilel Jkitou will fight for the WBA African middleweight belt against Saimon Mpenda from Tanzania in an exciting confrontation between two powerful fighters.

The event will feature great talents and good fights, in addition to the presence of the legend Mike Tyson, who announced that he will travel to Libya to support the evening and meet all the protagonists who will see action on the bill.

The WBA continues in its firm intention to globalize the sport and reach new countries daily, so this event in Libya is excellent news.

Nigeria and Cameroon go to war

Paris 2024: Falcons, Lionesses in fierce battle in Douala

Giants of African women’s football, Nigeria and Cameroon, will take no prisoners when they clash in Douala on Friday for a place in the final round of the African qualifying series for this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

The Super Falcons, rated top in Africa and still walking with springs in their steps after reaching the Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Down Under, exiting the finals without losing a match in regulation time, will remember at kick-off that the Indomitable Lionesses stopped their march to the London 2012 Olympics.

On their part, the Lionesses have grouses of their own, having been bumped by Nigeria in several significant events, including being denied the Women Africa Cup of Nations title in front of their fans in 2016 and being shoved out at the quarter-finals of the last Women AFCON tournament in Morocco.

Coach Randy Waldrum has recalled fabulous defender Ashley Plumptre, now based in Saudi Arabia, and Halimatu Ayinde, Toni Payne, and Christy Ucheibe will get to play together in the middle again after a stirring outing at the World Cup in Australia. There’s also the talented youngster Deborah Abiodun.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, is among the most respected safe hands globally. In forwards, Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu, Gift Monday, and Esther Okoronkwo, the Super Falcons boast one of the most stellar attacking ensembles in women’s football.

Captain Ajibade scored two of the five goals that eliminated Ethiopia in the second round of the qualifiers, with Oshoala also scoring, and Okoronkwo and Kanu were on fire as Cape Verde were put to the sword in the final round of qualifiers for this year’s Women AFCON championship.

Veteran defender Osinachi Ohale is peerless in her day, and younger stallions Tosin Demehin and Rofiat Imuran have grown to become actual fighters whenever the occasion calls for such.

Cameroon, who edged Uganda 3-2 on aggregate in the second round, will be missing star player Ajara Njoya Nchout. Yet, it will be dangerous to underestimate what the Lionesses can come up with right in their den.

Both teams will join the same flight to Nigeria’s administrative capital, Abuja, for Monday’s return leg at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana will take on Tanzania the same weekend, with the winner over two legs to clash with the winner of Nigeria/Cameroon for one of the African tickets to Paris in July.

Tunisia clashes with Morocco in an all-North African affair, while Ghana hosts Zambia in Kumasi. Winners will face off for the second African ticket to Paris.

As reported by CAFonline, the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup makes an exciting comeback this Sunday with a much-anticipated dose of premium African club football action.

With the dust barely settled from the recently concluded and most successful TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup takes center stage with a bumper-to-bumper lineup of fixtures set to thrill on Sunday.

The action kicks off in Polokwane, South Africa, where SuperSport United will be in a must-win clash against Egyptian side Modern Future FC, who are in a relatively comfortable second-place position in Group A.

In a later fixture also set to take place in Polokwane, tournament debutants Sekhukhune FC play hosts to former champions and Moroccan side RS Berkane, who currently lead Group D, with a seven-point margin separating them from the South Africans.

Later that afternoon in Algeria, Abu Salem SC welcomes former champions and Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek FC in what should be a tightly contested Group B affair by the two sides.

In Mali, Stade Melians welcomes Congo’s Diables Noirs, who are looking for their first win of the group stages following their three losses and a draw, which sees them at the bottom of Group D.

Nigerian side Rivers United will fancy a total of points against bottom-placed Academica do Lobito when they travel to Angola. The hosts currently languish at the bottom of the group with zero points but will be playing for pride in front of their supporters.

United are three points behind joint group leaders, Club Africain and Dreams FC are both on 9 points ahead of their tie set to take place on the same day.

Reigning champions, USM Alger, who have not been doing so well on the domestic front, will hope to maintain their impressive form in the group stages. The Algerian powerhouse currently leads Group A with an impressive 10 points.

They travel to Libya to face a desperate Al Hilal Benghazi who will be looking at causing an upset against the champions.

Salvages Champions League point in Napoli 1-1 draw with Barcelona

By Reuters

Napoli fought back to hold visitors Barcelona to a dour 1-1 draw in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday as Victor Osimhen cancelled out Robert Lewandowski’s opener.

Last year’s Spanish and Italian champions, both struggling this season, played out a poor match in which both sides were toothless and lacking attacking flair.

Third in the LaLiga standings and eight points behind leaders Real Madrid, Barcelona dominated the first half against a disorganized Napoli who barely managed to get out of their own half.

“It is not a good result for the return leg,” Barca manager Xavi told Movistar Plus.

“We were better in all aspects of the game, we had to control and we struggled, we weren’t effective up front, it was a summary of our season.”

Barca were playing their first Champions League knockout match for three years while Napoli were led by new coach Francesco Calzona with their Serie A title defence in tatters as they languish ninth in the domestic standings.

Napoli were frustrated by Barca’s high pressing, missing simple passes and gifting the ball to the visitors who also looked short of ideas in possession.

Teenager Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player to appear in the knockout phase of the Champions League at 16 years and 223 days, was also bidding to become the tournament’s youngest scorer but he sent an early effort wide and had a strike from distance saved by goalkeeper Alex Meret.

Ilkay Gundogan twice shot wide for Barca before Poland striker Lewandowski broke the deadlock in the 60th minute.

He received a pass from Pedri just inside the box and made space to unleash a bullet strike into the bottom corner of the net.

That woke Napoli up and Nigerian Osimhen, playing his first game since the Africa Cup of Nations, equalised 15 minutes later with a fine swiveling strike from inside the box to leave the tie evenly poised ahead of the return leg in Spain on March 12.

“We have a lot of work to do, but I congratulated the team for rediscovering the desire to fight,” Calzona told Amazon Prime Video Italia.

“We struggled at the start but I really liked the spirit of the side. The players gave their heart and soul to avoid defeat against a very strong opponent.”

World record-holder Charlton out to play

Ready to make a mark in Madrid

Just two weeks after breaking the world 60m hurdles record, Devynne Charlton heads to the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Final in Madrid on Friday (23) for her last competitive outing before competing at the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24, Jon Mulkeen reports for World Athletics.

The world indoor silver medallist has improved with almost every competition this year, starting with a 7.88 run in Kentucky and then a 7.75 national record in Texas. She nearly matched that at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Boston, running 7.76 to finish third in a highly competitive race, but she returned to winning ways at the Millrose Games two weeks ago, where she ran 7.67 to break a world record that had stood since 2008.

The line-up may be without USA’s Tia Jones, who won in Boston and then equaled the Bahamian sprint hurdler’s world record to win at the US Indoor Championships last week, but Charlton knows she can’t rest on her laurels in the Spanish city.

She currently sits second in the World Indoor Tour standings; a victory in Madrid will give Charlton the overall series title and a US$10,000 bonus. Nadine Visser, Pia Skrzyszowska, and Reetta Hurske – all winners of continental titles in recent years – will ensure Charlton is kept on her toes.

Madrid has previously played host to a world record in the 60m hurdles, with Grant Holloway clocking 7.29 there in 2021. Whether the world record will fall again in the women’s event is yet to be seen, but the meeting record of 7.79 – set by Hurske last year – looks pretty vulnerable.

The men’s event features a clash between four continental gold medallists. Switzerland’s European indoor champion Jason Joseph is undefeated this year and rounding into form nicely, having won the Swiss indoor title last weekend with a season’s best of 7.43 – the third-fastest man in the world this year.

He takes on the two men who preceded him as European indoor champion: France’s Wilhem Belocian, Milan Trajkovic of Cyprus, and European champion Asier Martinez. Italian record-holder Lorenzo Ndele Simonelli and Spanish record-holder Enrique Llopis add further quality to the field.

In the absence of some of their esteemed compatriots, Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom and Telahun Haile Bekele have an opportunity to capture their first victories of the year in the middle-distance events.

Teenager Haylom is the overwhelming favorite in the women’s 1500m. She clocked a PB of 3:58.43 to finish second in Boston, then placed third in Lievin with 4:00.00. Britain’s Revee Walcott-Nolan and Belgium’s 2021 European indoor champion Elise Vandereslt will be primed to capitalize if Haylom falters.

Bekele, the stand-out competitor in the men’s 3000m, will be making his season debut. His last race was at the Diamond League Final in September, where he clocked a 3000m PB of 7:25.48. Young talent Ermias Girma – the 2022 world U20 800m champion – is stepping up in the distance so that they could spring a surprise. And watch out for Hugo Hay of France.

A host of leading Spanish middle-distance runners will clash in the men’s 800m, led by Mohamed Attaoui, who has improved to 1:45.49 this year, and European indoor champion Adrian Ben. Alvaro de Arriba, the 2019 European indoor champion, and Belgium’s Pieter Sisk are also in the competitive line-up.

The women’s four-lap race looks set to clash between Ethiopia’s Worknesh Mesele and Tigist Girma.

Walsh vs Fabbri vs Steen in the loaded shot put

The men’s shot put field certainly packs a punch. Two-time world indoor champion Tom Walsh has the farthest PB of the high-quality line-up but has yet to secure a victory in a World Indoor Tour Gold meeting this year.

A win in Madrid could propel the New Zealander to the top of the standings, but he’ll have to finish comfortably ahead of USA’s series leader Roger Steen, the winner in Ostrava.

Italy’s world silver medallist, Leonardo Fabbri, won in Lievin with an indoor PB of 22.37m, the best performance this year on the field in Madrid. He, too, could snatch the series title, but only if Walsh, Steen, and Tomas Stanek finish a few places behind.

Including Zane Weir, Bob Bertemes, and Rajindra Campbell, there are seven men in the competition with 22-metre-plus PBs. Big throws are to be expected.

Big jumps can be expected, too. Australia’s 2022 world champion, Eleanor Patterson, takes on Slovenia’s Lia Apostolovski and Czechia’s Michaela Hruba in the women’s high jump. In theory, one giant leap from Patterson – or anyone, for that matter – could be enough to win the series title, but Hruba already has five points in the bank, giving her something of a head start.

Spanish record-holder Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun will enjoy the home crowd’s support in the triple jump. Returning to the scene of his national indoor record of 17.59m from last year, Diaz will face Algeria’s world and Olympic finalist, Yasser Triki.

Elsewhere, Poland’s Piotr Lisek and Portugal’s Pedro Buaro will clash in the pole vault. At the same time, Spain’s Fatima Diame takes on Romania’s Florentina Iusco and Serbia’s Milica Gardasevic in the women’s long jump.

Senegal, Egypt disappoint Africa

Crashout of FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in the group stages

Senegal and Egypt’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup campaign officially ended on Tuesday, 20 February, after both sides were eliminated during the group stages of the ongoing competition in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The two nations represented Africa at the global showpiece following their success in the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations held in Mozambique in 2022. Senegal was crowned champion in the final against Egypt.

Despite Egypt’s two consecutive losses against hosts UAE (2-1) and Italy (6-2), the North Africans put up a good fight in their last fixture, which ended in a narrow 6-5 defeat to the USA.

On the other hand, the African champions were on the verge of qualifying for the knockout phase after doing well to bounce back from a 6-4 loss to Belarus to overcoming Colombia 5-3 to set up a deciding clash with Japan in their final Group C match.

It was, however, not meant to be for the West African nation, as they suffered a close 6-4 defeat to Japan, which also spelled the end of their campaign.

Meanwhile, the COSAFA region will host its Beach Soccer Championship this year, with the official dates, venues, and participating nations to be announced in due course.

The last edition was held in Durban, South Africa in 2022.

PSV Eindhoven 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

Luuk de Jong seals first-leg draw for De Boeren

Sitting ten points clear at the helm of the Eredivisie, Peter Bosz’s PSV Eindhoven eagerly awaited the visit of Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League – and would feel confident of recording a positive result against a Schwarzgelben side that was held to a 1-1 draw by VfL Wolfsburg last time out, Rhys Webb reports for From The Spot co. Uk.

PSV: Benítez; Dest, Boscagli, Schouten, Teze; Saibari, Veerman, Tillman; Lozano, de Jong, Bakayoko

BVB: Meyer; Maatsen, Schlotterbeck, Hummels; Ryerson; Can, Sabitzer; Sancho, Reus, Malen; Füllkrug

Despite a strong start from PSV Eindhoven, Tuesday’s hosts found themselves trailing before the half-hour mark as former de Boeren striker Donyell Malen saw his deflected strike ricochet over the line via a deflection off the underside of the crossbar.

It was the Dutchman’s first goal in the UEFA Champions League since 2021. Still, his strike would carry die Schwarzgelben into half-time with a valuable lead at the Philips Stadion – with Johan Bakayoko having seen his attempt at an equalizer scuffed wide of the post before the break.

But PSV, as they had done in the first half, emerged as the stronger side when play resumed and were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute when Mats Hummels hacked down Malik Tillman inside the box. Luuk de Jong converted with a composed effort, restoring parity and further instilling belief among the hosts.

Peter Bosz’s side looked the likelier of the two sides to net a winner as the match grew older but were ultimately forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven ahead of their trip to Signal Iduna Park on March 13. Borussia Dortmund have not lost at home in the UEFA Champions League in over two years.

Erling Haaland ‘proved critics wrong’

Scores Man City goal after ‘incredibly tough’ week

Erling Haaland scores for Manchester City vs Brentford Photo credit: Manchester City Evening News

Manchester City beat Brentford in a tight game in the Premier League to close the gap on Liverpool FC, Joe Bray reports for Manchester City Evening News.

Pep Guardiola believes Erling Haaland ‘shut up’ his critics with his match-winning goal for Manchester City against Brentford.

City recorded 25 efforts on goal, with 11 on target against Brentford to follow 31 attempts against Chelsea on Saturday – of which nine fell Haaland’s way without resulting in a goal. Haaland was more clinical against Brentford but from fewer chances, ending his run of four games in five without a goal, sprinting free and converting past Mark Flekken.

Guardiola insisted there was nobody he would rather have had running past Kristoffer Ajer’s unfortunate slip, before advising anyone criticizing his performance against Chelsea that Haaland was always going to prove them wrong sooner or later.

Haaland lost his grandmother last week, and Guardiola accepted that his personal loss has naturally affected the striker. But he praised his striker for proving the difference between City and a stubborn Brentford side.

“Top scorers and strikers score a lot of goals, don’t criticize [them], because he will shut your mouth. Sooner or later always he is there,” Guardiola said of his striker, admitting he is still not back to his best physically.

“He was out for two months, he had an incredibly tough week last week – he lost his grandmother, it is not easy for a human being. He’s not in his best shape, it’s normal with two months [out].

“We spoke about the moment [Haaland’s bereavement] and I realised this later, but he didn’t say anything about the passing away of his grandmother. We talk about how he feels, of course for his father. In this type of games like Brentford, you need Erling. Today we could not use Kevin because he had niggles in his hamstring and I didn’t want to take risk.

“But this type of games, the second goal for example in Brentford was an assist from Kevin. You need these kind of players, but John and Manu were amazing today. They play amazing.”

Man City player ratings vs Brentford as Erling Haaland the hero

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game as Manchester City beat Brentford in the Premier League, Simon Bajkowski reports for the Manchester City Evening News.

Manchester City won 1-0 against Brentford to move within touching distance of the top of the Premier League.

City had 17 shots in the first half at the Etihad but were frustrated by a dogged defensive performance from the West London club, who also had a speedy threat on the counter. However, with 20 minutes to go Erling Haaland stroked home his 22nd goal of an injury-hit season to ease the nerves and send the Blues towards a 14th win in 16 games in all competitions.

Mateo Kovacic and Jeremy Doku were both brought off the bench as Pep Guardiola looked to seal the victory. Here are how the players rated.

Ederson: Commanded his box and was more secure than the defenders in front of him to keep a rare clean sheet. 7

Walker: Plenty of attempts down the right wing that went nowhere, but he also put it on a plate for Silva with a good run to the back post. 7

Dias: Saw more of the ball than he normally would, although some misplaced passes at the back. 6

Stones: Started strongly showing composure all over the pitch, but his influence faded over time. 7

Akanji: Started off ok and tested Flekken in goal but the more time he spent on the ball the more he wasted it. 5

Rodri: Tried his best to influence the final third and made an important pass for the goal. 7

Foden: Of all the shots City attempted, his were some of the most dangerous as he came in from the right. 7

Alvarez: An assist to play the ball through for Haaland, but two good chances blazed over the bar in the first half. 6

Silva: A mixture of tidy and quiet, generally ok with what he was involved in but not involved enough. 6

Bobb: As good as anyone else on his first Premier League start and a clever touch nearly brought him a goal. 7

Haaland: The match winner with a trademark finish, along with some decent play coming back to work with teammates. 7
