Ahead of Anthony Joshua fight

According to Nasir Jabbar of Sport Bible, Francis Ngannou has made a significant decision regarding Mike Tyson ahead of his monstrous fight against Anthony Joshua.

Ngannou returns to the boxing ring next FRIDAY when he takes on former world heavyweight champion Joshua.

It will be his first appearance since his valiant showing against Tyson Fury, where he dropped the WBC title holder before losing a controversial decision.

Ngannou will look to get off the mark in boxing following his high-profile UFC departure.

‘The Predator’ drafted in ‘Iron’ Mike for his training camp ahead of facing Fury last October and was ringside for their Riyadh clash.

But he has dropped the boxing icon from his camp before his fight against Joshua.

“To be honest with this fight, since my training was here [Riyadh], we didn’t get Mike Tyson here,” revealed Ngannou.

“He came in three times [for Fury], he was more advising.

“He would come and watch our training; he would be there to give advice.”

Tyson helped Ngannou prepare for his boxing debut, with the fighter’s trainer, Dewey Cooper, explaining his involvement in this camp.

“Well, Mike is his family to us,” he said. “Mike and I have been friends since the 90s. He used to come to my fights and show me support and love, and Francis talked about this over four years ago. Before Francis won the heavyweight championship in the UFC, Mike Tyson inspired him to do this boxing thing.

“So, Francis and Mike Tyson have an extraordinary relationship. So, even if Mike isn’t here, he and Francis talk; his motivation is there one way or another. ”

Ngannou could emulate Tyson’s achievement of winning a world heavyweight title should he beat Joshua.

A victory over ‘AJ’ could see him land an undisputed showdown against the winner of Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk.

Nightmare for Joshua, Fury and Usyk’s

‘Most avoided heavyweight on the planet’

Bakole has been sparring the best fighters in the heavyweight division for years

Ben Shalom writes for TalkSport that as promoter of Boxxer, Ben Shalom looks after some of boxing’s most exciting fighters. In his second exclusive column for talkSPORT.com, he talks about one in particular…

Martin Bakole is the most avoided man in the glamour division and can beat every heavyweight on the planet on his day.

Bakole showed just how good he is against Carlos Takam in September.

He came in highly overweight, having picked up an injury that had made it difficult for him to train, yet he still managed to blast the Frenchman out in four rounds.

Seven months earlier, we had witnessed Takam roll back the years by destroying Tony Yoka in Paris.

This was supposed to be a tough night on paper, but Bakole made it look easy.

GOT IT ALL

The Congolese puncher is a brutal fight for anyone at his weight.

He has all the physical attributes needed to reach the sport’s top.

His stamina is excellent, he’s solid, and on top of all of that, he is an excellent boxer.

It’s only a matter of time before he will be dining at the top table with the likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Oleksandr Usyk.

The WBA has ordered Bakole to face Don King fighter Cassius Chaney in a final eliminator bout for a version of their heavyweight titleWithout a doubt, he causes all of them real problems. They all know what a hard night’s work he will be.

Bakole has been up there sparring with Joshua, Fury, and Usyk.

If you asked them what they thought of him, they would agree that he has everything.

He’s not someone who Usyk will quickly outclass, he’s not someone that Fury can lean on and dictate with his size, and he’s not someone that Joshua can blow away.

THIS IS HIS YEAR

He matches anyone for boxing ability. I won’t sit here and tell you how he beats everyone individually; that’s for his team to work out.

But I will say that none of them will want to fight Bakole.

He is probably at the top of their lists for nights they don’t want to have, which is the biggest compliment you can pay to a fighter.

His profile has almost certainly elevated since signing with BOXXER and Sky Sports 12 months ago – and he will get his opportunities, the next being against Cassius Chaney in a WBA heavyweight title final eliminator.

Beyond that, Manuel Charr is fighting Kubrat Pulev for the ‘Regular’ belt, so there are opportunities in the WBA.

Bakole is eyeing up the 50th anniversary of the Rumble in the Jungle in Congo this year.

He is undoubtedly the most prominent Congolese fighter on the planet, so he also has some personal goals to achieve.

Mark my words: 2024 will be the year that Bakole comes to the forefront of the heavyweight division.

Caitlin Clark knocks out more milestones

In Hawkeyes’ 108-60 rout of Gophers

Iowa star surpasses Lynette Woodard for career scoring mark, sets single-season 3-point record, Dean Spiros reports for The Jamestown Sun

Williams Arena was the center of the women’s college basketball universe on Wednesday, thanks to Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, and no one’s surprise — and a sold-out crowd’s delight — she turned it into a historic night.

Clark scored 33 points to become the all-time leading scorer in women’s central college basketball, reaching 3,650 points, as the Hawkeyes routed the Gophers 108-60.

Clark entered the fourth quarter needing three points to set the record. She missed a three early in the quarter, but history was made when she connected from long range with four minutes and 46 seconds to play.

The record-breaker proved to be Clark’s last shot of the night, as she left the game shortly after, along with the other starters.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder, who knows how fortunate she is to watch Clark perform on a game-to-game basis, called Wednesday’s performance unique. Clark made 12 of 20 attempts, including 8 of 14 from 3-point range, grabbed ten rebounds and had 12 assists.

It was Clark’s 17th triple-double of the season.

“She’s the most dominant player in the game’s history, bar none,” said Gophers coach Dawn Plitzuweit. “What she can do on a nightly basis is mind-boggling.”

Clark broke the record of Lynette Woodard, who played at Kansas from 1977-81 when women’s athletics were governed by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Clark saluted Woodard for being among the players who helped the women’s game grow.

“I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do what I do every night if it wasn’t for people like her,” Clark said. “There are so many great players across the board. I’m thankful to have those people who have come before me.”

With the women’s record in hand, Clark needs 18 points to surpass Pete Maravich’s major college record of 3,667 points. Clark’s game has been compared to that of “Pistol Pete,” which she enjoys.

“I vividly remember people coming up to me in high school and talking about Pete,” Clark said. “They were telling me that I had to watch him on YouTube. So it’s super special closing in on that.

“It’s super special to be in the same realm as many of these talented players who have done many great things. Not just women’s or men’s basketball, but in basketball in general.”

Clark also broke the NCAA single-season record for 3-pointers. She made eight 3s, giving her 156 for the season.

It was only the second time The Barn has sold out (14,625) for a women’s game, the first coming on November 9, 2018, in Lindsay Whalen’s first game as head coach.

It was the second appearance of the season for women’s basketball royalty after an announced crowd of 10,868 was on hand for an appearance by local superstar Paige Bueckers and UConn in November.

Wednesday night saw a large contingent of Iowa fans who basked in the moment. Still, even those disheartened by a lopsided loss for the Gophers (15-13, 5-12) could appreciate being a witness to history.

“It’s cool to see the impact we’ve had across the country,” Clark said. “A lot of times, there’s a lot of Hawk fans there. It’s extraordinary; it never gets old.”

Clark entered the game needing 33 points to break Woodard’s record of 3,649 career points, and she came out looking as though she was determined to get there in the first half.

She wasted no time putting her stamp on the game, scoring Iowa’s first 12 points in the opening two minutes and 55 seconds. She made three threes while mixing in a drive to the hoop that resulted in a basket and a three-point play.

Wednesday night has witnessed the emergence of a large contingent of Iowa fans who basked at the moment. However, even those disheartened by a lopsided loss for the Gophers (15-13, 5-12) could appreciate being a witness to history.

There was no break in the game when the record was broken, but Clark’s accomplishment was recognized over the PA system as the teams left the floor.

It was a nice gesture, but not one that was needed. The crowd knew what it came for, as witnessed by the countless cellphones recording every time Clark touched the ball after moving within three points of history.

LeBron inspired comeback win over Clippers

A reminder of what the Lakers can do

Lebron James’ brilliant fourth-quarter display sparked team-wide confidence, and D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura contributed key baskets the way they did during last year’s playoff run, The Orange County Register reports

The phrase Anthony Davis used to describe the run LeBron James went on during the Lakers’ 21-point comeback victory over the Clippers: sicko mode.

Because for a 7½-minute stretch, the Clippers didn’t have an answer for the James-led onslaught, in which the future Hall of Famer scored 19 of his 34 points in the final quarter to punctuate a 116-112 Lakers win.

“He had to take the cape, tuck it under his seat on the bench, I guess,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “It was time for him to whip it out. He did that, put the cape on, and got aggressive and got into a good rhythm.”

James made five of eight 3-point attempts in the fourth to help turn the Clippers’ 21-point fourth-quarter lead (98-77) into just a two-point Lakers’ deficit (106-104) with 4:36 remaining after he made his fifth 3-pointer of the quarter and his season-high seventh of the game.

The Lakers spammed pick-and-roll actions that led to James getting Clippers big man Daniel Theis guarding him from behind the 3-point arc.

“It’s like an action we call point rub,” Ham said. “It’s targeting the weakest defender or where we feel we can get [an] advantage. And he just caught fire.

“I told him between quarters that we got to get up 3s. We got to score the ball. He did just that. He set the tone in that regard as well. Thank God he’s on our team.”

James described his zone during the fourth as “a superpower feel.”

“I know we’ve kind of heard what it feels like to be in the zone during our sport, and that’s just a feeling when you feel like everything you put up is going in,” James said. “And for me, I just kept it consistent. I wasn’t taking ill-advised shots. I stayed in the course of the offense.

“When I got the switches, I could give myself some space to get a couple more looks, so my teammates did a great job of continuing to find me. And then I just started to dictate the tempo and the game, and as we started making a run for it, getting the game closer and closer and closer, it became just a zone, and you can’t describe it. You wish you could stay in it forever, but obviously, it checks out once the game ends. But during it, you don’t feel anything.”

Teammate D’Angelo Russell said James gives the entire group confidence.

“How can you be surprised with some of the things he does?” Russell asked about James. “A lot of guys locked in defensively and gave us what we needed, but he’s a huge reason we won this game, just from him being him. As a group, we fought.”

But James’ hot shooting didn’t last the entire fourth period.

Once the Clippers started to send double-teams and extra bodies his way, it was on his teammates to help the Lakers get across the finish line.

And they delivered late, especially Russell and Rui Hachimura.

“It was reminiscent of what they did in the postseason last year,” Ham said. “That Memphis series, Golden State series. Those guys are skillful and willing shooters in big moments. And you saw it on display [Wednesday] in that stretch down the stretch during the fourth quarter. He made the right play, and they finished the play.”

James added: “My guys know I will make the right play no matter what. So if I get doubled, they know I will find the right play or the right player. D-Lo started making himself available when I started getting doubled and he was able to find Rui, Rui hit a three. Then he found Rui again; he had a baseline reverse. Then I got doubled again, I was able to find D-Lo over the top for a catch-high, stay-high 3-ball which was a big play for us. It’s great that we can lean on our guys, and everybody feels like they’re very comfortable making plays throughout the game, no matter the time.”

Multiple Lakers acknowledged they needed this win, especially in light of the playoff push and having dropped two of their first three games since the All-Star break after winning six of seven before the break.

It was a reminder of what they could do with their backs against the walls.

“It was a little reassuring for our team to get a win like this,” Davis said. “Guys made big plays, got big shots. This was a huge win for us. Not only for the Clippers but also for ourselves in general. This is a big reassurance win to hopefully get us playing how we were right before the break.”

Last four CAF Olympics 2024 qualifiers emerge

Paris 2024: Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia to contest Paris 2024 spots

Nigeria Image credit: CAFonline

The last two legs of the CAF Olympics Women’s football qualifiers take shape as South Africa, Nigeria, Zambia, and Morocco emerge as the four nations left on the continent’s arduous and narrow road to Paris 2024, CAFonline reports.

The four teams contesting for the two spots allocated to the continent at the Paris games this year will now be paired to determine who makes it to the Olympics for Africa.

Interestingly, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia are the four teams that represented Africa at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup and are the final four hanging in the balance for a place in Paris later this year.

The Super Falcons latched on to their place in the last round after overcoming Cameroon 1-0 in a two-legged affair, while reigning African champions South Africa master-minded a 4-0 aggregate win over Tanzania to set up an intriguing clash with Nigeria.

On Wednesday evening, Zambiaa was in a pulsatile joust against Ghana.

Following a slim 1-0 away victory, the Copper Queens played host to the Black Queens in Ndola, where a late strike by the ever-green Barba Banda gave the Zambians a 3-3 draw that saw them advance 4-3 on aggregate.

In a North African battle, Morocco outclassed Tunisia 4-1 after initially edging their opponents 2-1 in Tunis a few days ago. The result shows Morocco, who made their FIFA World Cup debut in the recent edition, in an excellent position to achieve another global competition qualification feat.

South Africa faces Nigeria, while Zambia takes on Morocco in two-legged fixtures between 01 – 09 April 2024.

Heavyweight Headline Fight Announced Featuring ‘The Real Big Baby’

Esther Lin/SHOWTIME/SB Nation

Ricky Carroll reports for The Big Fight Weekend that, on Saturday, April 13, Undefeated heavyweight phenom Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson (16-0, 15 KOs) will take a step up in class to face Belgian fighter Ryad Merhy (32-2, 26 KOs) in a 10-round bout at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Top Rank has confirmed both bouts, as reported by Mike Coppinger.

Jared Anderson Next Fight: Heavyweight Doubleheader Card Revealed

Jared Anderson’s Next Fight vs. Ryad Merhy

In the co-feature fight, Nigerian boxer Efe Ajagba (19-1, 14 KOs) will clash with Italian heavyweight Guido Vianello (12-1-1, 10 KOs) in a battle of 2016 Olympians. The card will also show three-time world title challenger Robson Conceicao, who will take on Jose Guardado.

Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum was full of praise for Anderson: “Jared Anderson is the most exciting young heavyweight in the world, and he’s stepping up against his toughest opponent to date. Corpus Christi is a great fight town, and I can’t wait for the fans there to have a front-row seat for the future heavyweight champion.”

Speaking on the co-feature heavyweight bout, Arum said: “Efe Ajagba is one of the division’s biggest punchers, but Guido Vianello is a skilled fighter who demanded a step up in competition. If you like heavyweights, this is a can’t-miss card.”

Anderson Speaks on Upcoming Fight

Anderson enjoyed a productive 2023, which saw him defeat Charles Martin by unanimous decision and stop Andriy Rudenko in round five. When speaking about April 13, “The Real Big Baby” said: “This is going to be the start of a big year, and I can’t wait to show out in front of the fans in Corpus Christi and everyone watching on ESPN.” He continued: “Merhy is a solid fighter but has never faced a heavyweight like me. He’ll see that in person on April 13.”

Introducing Ryad Merhy

Merhy was raised in Belgium but was born in Ivory Coast, with most of his fights taking place in his adopted country. He has moved from cruiserweight to heavyweight during his career, with a disappointing loss to Kevin Lerena snapping a seven-fight winning streak. His career was shot in the arm with his split decision success over Tony Yoka.

The Brussels resident spoke on the upcoming challenge: “After ending 2023 with a great performance, I am looking for another great performance, this time on American soil against the ‘future heavyweight hope.” He continued: “What I like about my current position is that I have nothing to prove. I accepted this fight because I didn’t see Anderson as a big danger. It’s up to him to prove himself against a small heavyweight like me. I feel no pressure. See you on April 13, Jared.”

Efe Ajagba Quotes

“I remember Guido from the Rio Olympics; he is a very skilled and powerful fighter.”

“My goal is to become heavyweight champion, and to accomplish my dream, I must be at my best against Guido.”

Guido Vianello

“This is a big opportunity for me to fight one of the top heavyweights in the world, and I did not hesitate when it was offered. I am ready to step up to the plate and look forward to a great fight on April 13.”

Liverpool’s next six could define quadruple hopes

0

Man City is in the FA Cup and Europa League fixtures; The Reds’ season is set to hinge on the next three weeks.

Liverpool has the chance of winning a quadruple this season, and their next six matches could define whether they end up winning all four competitions they are in, Premier League reports.

The Reds secured their first piece of silverware this season when beating Chelsea 1-0 in the EFL Cup final on Sunday thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s extra-time header.

In three weeks, Liverpool could be closer to a 20th league title while sitting in the FA Cup semi-finals and the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

So, who do they face in their quest for all four trophies?

28 Feb – Liverpool v Southampton (FA Cup)

Though Liverpool could be without 12 first-team players for their fifth-round FA Cup tie against Southampton on Wednesday, Jurgen Klopp and his side will believe they can overcome the Championship club.

Liverpool have only lost once in their last 13 matches against Saints and are victorious in their previous six encounters at Anfield.

Southampton comes into this match in poor form after losing three of their last four games in the Championship as they sit in fourth place, five points away from second-placed Leeds United.

Liverpool extended their excellent run over the Saints with an emphatic 3-0 win at Anfield thanks to goals from teenagers Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns.

2 Mar – Nott’m Forest v Liverpool (Premier League)

There is another quick turnaround for Liverpool as they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this Saturday.

19 19 Burnley 26 -33 13
20 20 Sheffield Utd 26 -44 13

*Everton deducted six points following a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

It is arguably a stricter fixture than many would think. Liverpool haven’t won away at Forest in 13 league matches, with their last top-flight victory coming back in October 1984.

7 Mar – Sparta Prague v Liverpool (Europa League)

Though Liverpool will be favorites to beat Sparta Prague in round 16 of the Europa League, the tie could still challenge the Reds given their opponents’ form.

Sparta is the league leader in the Czech First League and has only lost once this season. They also produced a superb comeback to beat Galatasaray in the last stage of the Europa League, winning 6-4 on aggregate.

And Liverpool could have at least one eye on a huge match that comes just three days later.

10 Mar – Liverpool v Man City (Premier League)

For the final time, Klopp and Pep Guardiola will go head-to-head in a vast title encounter between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.

Klopp will know that victory could go a long way towards securing a second Premier League Trophy.

Liverpool will go into a potentially decisive duel buoyed by the fact that they have only lost once at home against Man City since 2003.

The title race

1 Liverpool 26 +38 60
2 Man City 26 +33 59
3 Arsenal 26 +39 58

14 Mar – Liverpool v Sparta Prague (Europa League)

Liverpool will hope this affair won’t be as tense as the last time Sparta came to Anfield in February 2011 when they needed Dirk Kuyt to strike in the 86th minute to seal a 1-0 aggregate win for the Reds.

16/17 Mar – Man Utd v Liverpool (FA Cup)

If Liverpool are to win all four trophies, they will have to do it the hard way after being drawn against their biggest rivals in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Manchester United supporters will no doubt be keen to see their team battle for a result that undermines their fierce rivals’ hopes of winning the trophy in Klopp’s final campaign.

The Red Devils will undoubtedly be tricky opponents, given that they are the only team to prevent Liverpool from scoring this season when the two sides met at Anfield in December.

Can Liverpool do it?

Two seasons ago, Liverpool won both domestic trophies, competed in the title race until the last match of the season, and reached the UEFA Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid, so many of their players will know what it takes to go the distance in all four competitions.

And unlike in 2022, the title is in Liverpool’s hands, while the opposition in the Europa League is likely more accessible than in the Champions League.

While many battles are ahead, Klopp may get a fairytale ending beyond his wildest dreams.

Nigeria to clash with South Africa

In fierce battle for Paris 2024 ticket

An epic African women’s football showdown awaits in the quest to securing a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympics, as reigning champions South Africa will face off against the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the fourth and final round of qualifiers.

After being held to a 0-0 draw in Cameroon, Nigeria snatched a 1-0 victory on Tuesday evening thanks to an Esther Okorokwo strike at the National Stadium in Abuja to see the Super Falcons through to the next round.

Banyana Banyana on the other hands did half the job in Tanzania when they won 3-0 in the first leg ahead of the return leg on Tuesday. With a comfortable three-goal advantage, Thembi Kgatlana put the icing on the cake with a solo strike that saw the South Africans emerge victorious on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Morocco will face Tunisia on Wednesday, 28 February at home following their 2-1 away victory in the first leg, while Ghana will be hoping to reverse the 1-0 loss to Zambia when the two sides clash on the same day.

Only five African countries have taken part in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament since its inception in Atlanta in 1996, namely: Nigeria (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008), Cameroon (2012), South Africa (2012, 2016), Zimbabwe (2016) and Zambia (2020).

Mavericks’ Luka Doncic admits crucial mistake

The Mavericks star’s blunder led to Max Strus’ buzzer-beater

Despite putting up 45 points, sort of put the blame on himself for their gut-wrenching defeat against the Cavs,

Jedd Pagaduan reports for Clutch Points.

For a second, it looked like Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks were going to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night. The Cavs had to converge on Doncic after the Slovenian superstar carved their defense up to the tune of 45 points, so the Mavericks star made them pay with a sweet dish to PJ Washington to give them a 119-118 lead. This was meant to devastate the Cavs, especially when they no longer had any timeouts left to advance the basketball.

However, Max Strus had other ideas. Strus, who was on a heater in the fourth quarter to help the Cavs keep in stride with the Mavericks, capped off his heroics in the final frame with an absurd buzzer-beating game-winner from beyond halfcourt, breaking the hearts of Mavs fans everywhere.

While Strus deserves all the credit for giving the Cavs the victory, Luka Doncic saw fit to assign blame to himself for what he perceived was his lackluster defense on the red-hot sniper on that fateful final possession.

“That was my fault. I should have pressed up more. I was the first one, so that was my bad,” Doncic said in his postgame presser, per Grant Afseth of Sports Illustrated. “Incredible shot. I have nothing much to say. Max hurt us in the 4th quarter a lot, but that was an incredible shot, man.”

If there’s anyone who would have a much-greater appreciation for Max Strus’ final shot, it’s Luka Doncic. The Mavericks star brazenly attempted a full-court shot in the All-Star Game that went awry, so he should know, of all people, that great confidence can enable the best shooters in the world to make even the most ridiculous shots.

But it’s truly difficult to blame Doncic for not pressing on Strus. Sure, the Mavericks star could have broke the Cavs sniper’s rhythm by running up to him earlier, disrupting his stride. But the unfathomable game-winner from 60 feet was simply meant to be, a perfect capper to an insane shooting binge from Strus in the fourth quarter. Nonetheless, fumbling a game in quite the heartbreaking fashion will always leave a bad taste in the mouths of those on the losing end.
