Gombe Utd loses 3 points, goals

For assault on match officials

Gombe United has been fined N3m, and their stadium has been temporarily closed to fans, NPFL reports. The club was also docked three points and three goals from its total accrued for the season.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) says the move is to its zero tolerance for assault on match officials.

Davidson Owumi, the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, who signed the notice, warned other clubs to ensure the safety of match officials assigned to their games or face serious consequences.

Officials in the Matchday 26 fixture against visiting Akwa United were found to have been physically attacked by fans at the end of the match at the Pantanmi Stadium on Sunday, March 17.

The NPFL in a Summary Jurisdiction notice issued Gombe United said its findings included that Bright Nwosu, the Center Referee, Abdullahi Indabawa, the AR1, Friday Abu Emeje AR2, and Musa Hussainy Talle, the 4th Official were assaulted by the club fans.

Gombe United was charged with breach of Rules B13.52, B13.18 and C1.1 of the NPFL Frameworks and Rules, which arose from their failure to provide adequate and effective security, leading to access to restricted areas by unauthorized persons, throwing objects by their supporters at match officials and the visiting team, and assaulting match officials at the end of the game.

In addition to the points deduction, the NPFL also imposed a total fine of three million Naira on the club, made up of ₦1 million each for failure to provide adequate and effective security and throwing objects onto the field of play, and compensatory payments to the four-match officials at ₦250,000 each.

The NPFL also issued an order closing the Pantami Stadium to fans of Gombe United for the next three home games.

Gombe United has 48 hours from receipt of the sanctions to accept them in writing and submit to the rulings or face a disciplinary panel under Rule C26.

Police raid Spanish FA, six nabbed

In probe into RFEF deal for Super Cup in Saudi

Spanish police have arrested at least six people and raided the offices of the Spanish FA (RFEF) as well as a property belonging to former president Luis Rubiales as part of a corruption and money laundering investigation reportedly linked to taking the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia in a multi-million-euro deal, Andrew Warshaw reports for Inside World Football.

Spain’s Guardia Civil said that Rubiales, who stepped down in September and was banned for three years by FIFA after causing an international scandal for kissing Spanish World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso without her consent, was not among the six arrested and was out of the country.

The office for Spain’s state prosecutors said that a total of 11 premises were raided across the country, reportedly including in Madrid and Granada where Rubiales has an apartment, and that it expected the operation to conclude with more arrests.

The RFEF said it was “deeply concerned” by the search of its headquarters and has offered its full cooperation.

Four years ago, Rubiales, currently awaiting trial for allegedly sexually assaulting Hermoso – a charge he denies – angered football traditionalists by expanding the contest between the league champions and Copa del Rey winners to a four-team format, shifting the event from August to January and hosting it outside Spain – a deal reportedly worth €120 million.

Prosecutors opened a probe into the arrangement in 2022 following a leaked audio conversation between Rubiales and then-Barcelona defender Gerard Pique regarding millions of dollars in commissions.

The website El Confidencial published leaked audio recordings from 2019 that revealed details about a contract allegedly negotiated between the pair.

According to El Confidencial, the contract included Pique’s sports agency Kosmos receiving €4 million for each of six tournaments to be played in Saudi Arabia from 2020.

The revelations claimed Kosmos acted as intermediary in the agreement between the Spanish FA and the Saudis.

Rubiales vehemently denied at the time that there was anything improper and said the agreement signed with Saudi Arabia was done in a “transparent, honorable, legal” way and was “beneficial” for Spanish football.

AEW

CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Tonight’s doubleheader episode of AEW DYNAMITE & AEW RAMPAGE was broadcast live from the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, ON!

Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and “The Human Suplex Machine” Taz were the broadcast team for tonight’s event.

It’s Wednesday night, and you know what that means!

Tony Schiavone started the show in the ring to interview “The CEO” Mercedes Moné!

The fans chanted, “CEO! CEO! CEO!”

Mercedes: “Toronto, please say hello to your new CEO. I have been on such a high since last week at Big Business. I missed you guys, and I missed all of this! I am so excited to be here at AEW. Many of you guys don’t know this, but all of this almost got taken away from me ten months ago. I nearly had a career-ending injury in a match against Willow Nightingale.

“I know this is in the past, and I’m in a new home at AEW. A lot of people may not know who Mercedes Moné is, so I asked the production truck to play a highlight video so you can get a taste of your new CEO.

“As you see, I was rocking and rolling, I was kicking butt all over the world, but then it got taken away from me. But I knew I needed to be back, and I needed to be here. Minor setbacks make for major comebacks, and now I’m here as your CEO. I am not here to lead a woman’s evolution. I’ve done that before. I am here to lead a women’s global revolution. I can be here to meet the very best women in AEW and all over the globe.

“About last week when Julia Hart and Skye Blue attacked Willow, they must not have heard that I have unfinished business with Willow. And anybody that messes with my business will go bankrupt. There’s a price you pay when you mess with Mercedes Moné.”

The arena lights went dark!

The lights returned, and Julia Hart stood in the aisle, smirking at Mercedes. Skye Blue tried to ambush Mercedes, but Mercedes dropped Blue! Julie Hart jumped in, and Mercedes hoisted Julia for the Money Maker, but Skye Blue pulled Julia to safety!

Skye Blue and Julia Hart pulled steel chairs out from beneath the ring. They were about to enter the ring to attack Mercedes with the chairs, but Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander sprinted to the ring with their own chairs and came to Mercedes’s aid!

The lights went dark again! When they came back on, Willow had a chair, and it appeared she was set to whack Mercedes with it, but she put it down.

“I think she was going to hit Mercedes with it,” said Schiavone.

Mercedes pointed at Willow and said she had her eyes on her.

AEW Continental Championship Match!

“Mad King” Eddie Kingston (c.) vs. Kazuchika Okada!

“The world is ready for this one,” said Tony Schiavone.

Kingston hit Okada with a flurry of offense and then blistered the challenger with chops. Okada hammered back with an elbow to the back of Kingston’s head. Okada spiked Kingston with a DDT on the arena floor!

Matthew and Nicholas Jackson watched backstage, wearing headsets and producing the match.

Okada nailed Kingston with a neckbreaker and followed up with a dropkick to the side of Kingston’s head. Kingston fired back with a double-over-hook suplex and then a back-heel trip. Kingston blasted Okada with machine gun chops in the corner. Kingston rocked Okada with a German suplex and then a sliding forearm. Okada rallied back with a dropkick.

Eddie stunned Okada with a spinning back fist for a near fall. Okada attempted to hit the Rainmaker, but Kingston raised his arms to block it. Okada gouged Kingston’s eyes. Okada planted Kingston on the mat and rocked Eddie with the Rainmaker, scoring the pin!

New AEW Continental Champions… “The Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada!

“History was made here tonight,” said Taz.

“Okada, wasting no time,” replied Excalibur.

“The Bastard” Pac’s music hit! Pac walked onto the ramp and stared a hole into Okada, making his presence known to the Rainmaker!

Renee Paquette was backstage to interview Swerve Strickland!

Renee said that Swerve went after AEW World Champion Samoa Joe and wanted to know his intentions.

Swerve: “The AEW World Championship, Renee. Samoa Joe attempted to embarrass me by choking me out. Unfortunately for him, I have a history of choking people out myself. I want to fight, so I will offer an open challenge tonight.”

Next, Renee Paquette interviewed Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale ahead of tonight’s street fight!

Mercedes Moné walked onto the scene and interrupted them.

Kris: “You know, I’ve been meaning to say this. Thank you for having Willow’s back last week.”

Mercedes: “Of course. That’s what a CEO does. You see, a CEO stands up for what she believes in. And I’m excited to watch your street fight tonight. Because you know what they say: payback’s a bitch. And thanks for having my back out there tonight, Kris. It was nice meeting you.”

Willow: “Mercedes, I just wanted to say—”

Mercedes: “You’ve done enough!

“Lionheart” Chris Jericho vs. FTW Champion HOOK.

Hook dumped Jericho on the back of his head with a T-bone suplex out of the gates!

“I don’t think Jericho expected that,” said Schiavone.

Hook battered Jericho in the corner. Jericho fired back with chops. Hook sent Jericho for a ride once again with another T-bone suplex. Hook dodged Jericho and planted Jericho with two more suplexes. Hook folded Jericho in half with another suplex!

“We are witnessing a lopsided affair. Hook is dominating Chris Jericho,” said Excalibur.

Jericho booted Hook in the face and rammed Hook with a shoulder block. Jericho jumped off the top turnbuckle, but Hook caught and suplexed him. Jericho tried to rally back with a lion sault for a near fall.

Hook charged at Jericho, but Jericho countered by throwing Hook. Jericho put Hook on the top turnbuckle, looking for a top-rope hurracanrana, but Hook managed to apply the Red Rum on Jericho! Chris Jericho broke the grip and was looking for the Walls, but Hook countered by rolling up Jericho and pinning him!

“What an inside cradle out of nowhere!” said Taz.

“That might be the biggest victory of Hook’s career thus far. Hook just pinned the first-ever AEW World Champion,” said Excalibur.

Jericho fist-bumped Hook after the match, and both men displayed mutual respect for one another.

We heard from the Undisputed Kingdom’s Adam Cole!

Cole: “I hate the feeling of being disappointed. Last week, Wardlow, I felt disappointed. You challenged Samoa Joe for the AEW World Championship, and you failed. Wardlow, you had one damn job, and you failed. And right now, I should be—you should be—the AEW World Champion.

“Instead, you have a new goal: to ensure the Undisputed Kingdom holds onto our gold. You’ll ensure that Taven and Bennett keep those Ring of Honor World Tag Team titles and Roderick Strong keeps the AEW International Championship. And then maybe we’ll forgive you.

“Wardlow, I’m not saying this out of anger. I’m saying this because I care about you. I want what’s best for you. I want you to reach your true potential. So don’t screw it up.”

Renee Paquette interviewed Chris Jericho backstage!

Jericho: “Last week, I said I wanted to face Hook individually for a reason. I was hoping he did what he did tonight. Hook, you showed me something I haven’t seen in a long time. You are a future World Champion. You are every bit of a bad, bad man, as everyone says you are. And after tonight, you’ve got my respect. And next week, Hook, on Dynamite, I’ve got a proposition for you.”

Tony Schiavone interviewed “The Aerial Assassin” Will Ospreay in the ring!

Ospreay: “I’ll clear the air right now. The last time I was here, I was a little naughty boy. I’ve changed. I’m here to improve AEW. I am here to give you guys Elite levels of professional wrestling.

“I said what I wanted to say about Bryan Danielson until I saw Collision. I hope all the lads studied his match against Shibata on Collision. That was pro wrestling. Bryan, in one breath, you said you were grateful to be stepping into the ring with me, but in the other breath, you said I couldn’t walk in your shoes.

“Maybe he’s right because when I would go to Japan, I’d see his shoes, and there’s no way I could fit into them because they’re too small for me. What I did in Japan was elevate professional wrestling. But apparently, I can’t walk in your shoes. Want me to prove it? All right, Shibata, long time no see. Seven years ago, I wrestled Shibata, and he beat the piss out of me. But the 23-year-old me is different than the 30-year-old me because I’ve got a point to prove. So next week on Dynamite, Shibata, meet me in this ring. Danielson, sit home and watch, and let me show you what I’m all about.”

Swerve rocked Butcher with the House Call kick, crunched Butcher with the Swerve Stomp right on target, applied a submission hold, and forced Butcher to tap!

“That may be Swerve’s first submission victory in an AEW ring,” said Excalibur.

Swerve: “Samoa Joe, before I met you, I had nothing but respect for you. But then I felt a little indifferent when I got to know you. Then, after a while, I started disliking you. And now I’m getting close to hating you. And as I stand with this chain in my possession, every day I think about wrapping it around your neck and hanging it from the post, but I don’t have enough chain for that big ass neck.

“You’ll keep sending security to watch your back. Every week I will take them out until you give me what I want!”

AEW World Champion Samoa Joe walked down to the ring!

Samoa Joe: “Well, what do you do with someone like you, Swerve? Logic should dictate that I ignore you entirely because, contrary to your belief, I beat you at Revolution and shoved you down the championship ladder.

“You still believe that the impossible is possible. You still believe that if you stand toe-to-toe with me, you can box with a god. The problem with that belief is it becomes an infection. All these people believe they can be great, too. And that’s all fine and dandy until someone like me shows up, smashes you in the face, and takes everything you have. And it was at that realization that I knew exactly what to do with someone like you. And that is to give you exactly what you want!”

Don Callis: “Whoa, whoa, whoa guys. It strikes me, Swerve, that I guess when you’re in Swerve’s House, you can just put yourself in a World title match. And Swerve, it strikes me that you and Takeshita have the same amount of wins. The difference is Takeshita is undefeated outside the Don Callis Family. So, Swerve, I think Takeshita needs to show you what it tastes like to lose to the family.

“And if you’re feeling good about that Swerve, I’m happy to teach you a lesson I’ve taught many people: This is not Swerve’s House—this is the Don Callis House!”

Swerve: “If I had more time and I wasn’t distracted by what I’ve got going on, I’d burn the Don Callis Family Tree down to a crisp. But you know what? I accept. I will take on Takeshita. And when I’m done with him, I’m coming for you again, Joe.”

Excalibur: “I’ve been informed that next week on Dynamite, Konosuke Takeshita is officially going against Swerve Strickland!”

The kits are linked by a unilateral design language that has modernized and augmented each nation’s traditional identity and regalia through what Nike refers to as the “metaprism”—an artistic lens that has helped push each one into brave new realms of color and detailing.

Inspiration has mainly been taken from national flags and emblems. However, more esoteric sources have also been employed, such as flora and fauna, geography, traditional ceramics, ancient Asian pearl inlays, and even 1990s ice hockey.

Here, we go through each federation’s new home and away kits, analyze the various thematic and prismatic concoctions, and assign them all a cast-iron rating out of 10.

UNITED STATES HOME

The United States will be positively dripping in patriotic symbolism as it prepares to host the 2024 Copa America. Trinity Rodman shows off a home jersey that is primarily white, with a textured knit to the fabric and matching collar and cuff trim that borrow heavily from the Stars & Stripes, the national flag.

Rating: 6.5/10

UNITED STATES AWAY

The away kit is altogether more outlandish. The old red, white, and blue are used to create a glitchy, spiked graphic that splits the jersey into three distinct diagonal bands of color. The shirt, worn by Sergiño Dest, also carries the slogan “One Nation, One Team” around a rosette printed inside the back of the collar.

Rating: 7.5/10

ENGLAND HOME

After failing to win wholesale approval from fans with the unusual blue gradient that adorned the shoulders of the 2023 home kit, England returned to traditional fare in 2024. Jude Bellingham & Co. wore a classically styled jersey with minimal blue-and-red trim adorning a field of pristine white, which in turn has a crinkled pattern woven into the fabric. Quintessential, maybe, but not particularly interesting. And that folded collar looks downright uncomfortable.

Rating: 6.5/10 (including a bonus 0.5 marks for the sash)

ENGLAND AWAY

Lauren James will look dapper in a chalky navy/indigo hue. The away kit is lifted above the average by a speckling of tasteful trim that includes a beautiful inverted colorway of the Three Lions badge, various golden accouterments, and an artsy side panel filled with abstract stripes and shapes inspired by the cross of St. George.

Rating: 9/10

BRAZIL HOME

Brazil has been furnished with its traditional yellow, green, and blue palette, though on closer inspection, the jersey to be worn by Vinícius Júnior contains much more subtle detail. The lemony yellow base is mottled by an all-over pattern that includes elements of the Brazilian flag, fern trees, and even jaguars, while stylized ocean waves roll gently around the sleeve cuffs.

It’s also worth noting the high, folded V-neck collar that Nike has used as a template for several of their latest international kit releases — a curious design that is certain to divide opinion.

Rating: 7.5/10

BRAZIL AWAY

The ocean motif takes a prominent position in the design of the away kit, with the green and blue wavy pattern that adorns the sleeve cuffs of the home shirt being plastered all over Brazil’s secondary strip and is accented with a bright turquoise trim to cap off the aquatic theme.

Rating: 7/10

FRANCE HOME

It’s unlikely to be the only new shirt worn by Kylian Mbappé this season.

Looking like it was lifted directly from the 1970s, France’s new home shirt is a retro-infused offering that features little in the way of detail beyond a deliberately asymmetrical tricolor collar, a faux “knitted” texture to the material, and a genuinely monstrous FFF federation crest—tres bonne.

Rating: 7/10

FRANCE AWAY

France’s change strip is predominantly white, with simple blue-and-red block trim on the collar and cuffs and that same enormous cockerel emblem affixed to the chest. Pinstripes run vertically down the entire strip and subtly change from blue to red across the latitudinal plane. Unfortunately, the pinstripes also continue onto the shorts, rendering the whole thing a bit of a retina-pummeling mess.

Rating: 4.5/10

PORTUGAL HOME

Could this be the last Portugal jersey worn by Cristiano Ronaldo?

Portugal‘s new home kit is nothing revolutionary, though the red used is much lighter and “redder” than the deeper maroon tones we’ve seen in recent years. The design is routine, straightforward, and template-driven, but at least the base color is bright and bold.

Rating: 6/10

PORTUGAL AWAY

For the second consecutive year, Portugal will play in an away kit inspired by traditional ceramics. The 2024 edition specifically emphasizes the ornate glazed patterns of the Azulejo tiles, which have been widely used to decorate churches, palaces, homes, and even restaurants for centuries. The white shirt has a faded, deliberately shabby blueprint that lends the “tiles” a well-worn look.

Rating: 7.5/10

NETHERLANDS HOME

After being mellowed and rumpled for the 2023 home kit, the Oranje has been reinvigorated for 2024. The Netherlands’ historic national colors are amplified to a particularly vivid hi-vis tone that gives off a low hum and has even been officially listed as “Safety Orange.” The trim is a relatively straightforward set of royal blue blocks and bands elsewhere.

Rating: 6/10

NETHERLANDS AWAY

2024 doesn’t look like a vintage year for the Netherlands (at least as far as their kits are concerned), with the away strip falling some distance short of the great Dutch alternative jerseys of yore. A dark blue base is a canvas for a reasonably ugly, muddled rectangular pattern that looks suspiciously like it might have been taken from a sample book of 1980s public transport seat upholstery. Grim.

Rating: 4/10

NIGERIA HOME

Swapping their primary colorway around for the first time in several years, Nigeria has been plied with a white home kit for 2024 that is imbued with the “Naija” spirit, which is printed across the chest and housed inside an enormous Eagle motif woven into the fabric. The unorthodox look bestowed upon Victor Osimhen is then topped off with a strange square neckline, which we honestly can’t recollect ever seeing on a football jersey.

Rating: 7/10

NIGERIA AWAY

Using black as a base color, Nigeria’s away kit is covered in a blotchy graphic print to represent the connection between the African country’s creative communities. We’ll have to take Nike’s word for that, but it certainly looks the part, regardless.

Rating: 7/10

NORWAY HOME

Having failed to qualify for Euro 2024, Norway can at least take solace in the fact that they will be looking fantastic while they sit at home watching the tournament unfold in Germany. The new home shirt is a wild, striped affair cobbled together using elements of the national flag and the sharp, cleaving edges of Viking swords. It’ll look sharp on Erling Haaland.

Rating: 7/10

NORWAY AWAY

A lot of thought has been put into the away kit, which is a white-out design inspired by the Arctic Circle’s snowy tundra and icy floes. The ribbon-like ripple of the graphic also references the Northern Lights and will be worn by Caroline Graham Hansen and Co.

Rating: 6/10

CANADA HOME

Intended as a celebration of Canada‘s sporting DNA, the most notable aspect of the red home shirt is the unique inverted, two-tone Nike swoosh, which is lifted directly from retro ice hockey jerseys.

Rating: 6/10

CANADA AWAY

The away shirt is a basic color swap of the home shirt, with a white shirt adorned with 13 thin red pinstripes: 10 to represent the modern-day provinces of Canada and an additional three for the federation’s original territories, which were unified in 1867. Other than that, it’s all a little bit underwhelming.

Rating: 6.5/10

CHINA HOME

China‘s home kit is a simple design with a predominantly red shirt and austere yellow-and-black trim on the sleeve cuffs. The twin dragons on the national crest are repeated as a decal inside the back of the collar.

Rating: 4/10

CHINA AWAY

The away shirt is similarly stripped down with a white shirt and the same colored cuff trim found on the home jersey. There is nothing more to mention here.

Rating: 3/10

CROATIA HOME

While the fundamentals of Croatia‘s latest kits remain largely unchanged, the famous red and white checks (taken from the national coat of arms) are much larger than usual and thus dramatically change the design’s appearance. We feel the oversized tiles make the jersey look a little too sparse.

Rating: 5/10

CROATIA AWAY

We much prefer the look of the away kit, which sees the ever-present Croatian checks rendered in shades of blue and tilted diagonally to create a diamond pattern, complete with flashes of red pinstriping.

Rating: 7/10

SOUTH KOREA HOME

South Korea‘s shimmering new shirts are inspired by the Asian nation’s artistic traditions. The usual red palette of the home strip is updated with a pinkish, almost metallic blush. The pattern is supposed to reflect Korean architecture, and the bright, contrasting turquoise trim makes the whole thing pop.

Rating: 7.5/10

SOUTH KOREA AWAY

The iridescent marbling pattern on Korea’s away jersey is drawn from the country’s famous mother-of-pearl lacquerware—the ornate inlays used to decorate furniture, ceramics, and jewelry for centuries. The effect is splendid and will look best sparkling beneath the floodlights on match day.

Rating: 8.5/10

POLAND HOME

As usual, it’s thoroughly dull stuff from Poland, which has been lumbered with the same painfully boring plain white/basic red trim design they’ve been toiling away in since the late 1930s. We’re aware that there are only two colors on the national flag; thus, options are limited, but it wouldn’t hurt to experiment with the Eagles’ primary strip once in a while.

Rating: 4/10

POLAND AWAY

Surprise, surprise. Poland’s new away strip is red with white trim. However, it does at least feature an all-over dot graphic that gives the material a shimmering effect. Robert Lewandowski and Co. They haven’t qualified for Euro 2024 yet (they could make it through the playoffs later this month), but judged solely on their kits alone, it’s hard to imagine anybody noticing either way.

Rating: 5/10

TURKEY HOME

Unfortunately, we are again looking at bog standard stuff for Turkey, which will be the same kit configuration as they always do. The home is plain white with a broad band of red around the chest that houses the national moon and star crest.

Rating: 4/10

TURKEY AWAY

Alas, Turkey’s new away kit is even more devoid of interest. The very plain red shirts are decorated with nothing more than a large, white moon and star on the chest. Honestly, it looks like little thought, creativity, or effort went into designing it.

Liberia and Eswatini post away wins

Take control of TotalEnergies CAF AFCON preliminary ties

Liberia and Eswatini took commanding leads in their respective TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, preliminary round ties after claiming impressive away victories on Wednesday.

Liberia captain Murphy Dorley scored one of two first-half goals as the Lone Stars defeated hosts Djibouti 2-0 in the opening leg in  Marrakech.

Mohammed Sangare broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 23 minutes before Dorley coolly slotted home Sebastian Teclar’s cross 12 minutes later.

Djibouti struggled to lay a glove on their more illustrious opponents as the Lone Star side kept them at bay to take two away goals into next week’s second leg in Monrovia.

Eswatini also celebrated after demolishing Somalia 3-0 in the Moroccan city of El Jadida to put one foot in the group-stage qualifiers.

Striker Sabelo Ndzinisa was the hero, netting twice on either side of Felicio Figuareido’s 40th-minute opener for the visitors.

Somalia now faces an uphill battle to qualify when they travel to the Mbombela Stadium in the South African city of Nelspruit for the return on March 26th.

The opening leg victories give Liberia and Eswatini a huge advantage heading into the second leg. They are targeting a place in the group stage on the road to next year’s finals in Morocco.

Back from the locker room, Somalia still couldn’t play its game.

Worse, Eswatini widened the gap with Ginindza, who scored his double of the evening in the 56th minute. 3-0, the score remained unchanged on the scoreboard until the final whistle.

Victory for Eswatini will still have to perform in the return leg to ensure its qualification for the qualifiers.

Olympic soccer draw: USWNT gets Germany

U.S. men lumped with France

The United States women’s national soccer team will face Australia, Germany, and either Morocco or Zambia in Group B at the 2024 Paris Olympics, FIFA confirmed on Wednesday at the tournament draw at the Pulse Building near Paris, Jeff Kassouf reports for ESPN.

The tournament will mark the first competitive games in charge of the U.S. for incoming head coach Emma Hayes, who takes over the team following its worst finish in World Cup history last year.

Tournament play will begin on July 25 for the U.S. in Nice against Morocco or Zambia, who will compete in a two-leg playoff in April. The U.S. has never previously played either team.

The Americans won four of the first five Olympics to feature women’s soccer but are searching for their first gold medal since the 2012 London Games. They earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

The U.S. recently fell to No. 4 in FIFA’s rankings, its worst position since the rankings launched in 2003, but was one of three seeded teams for the tournament alongside World Cup champion Spain and host France. England, the No. 2 team in the world, failed to qualify (as Great Britain) for the Olympics.

The United States has a 23-5-7 record against Germany. The two teams have combined to win six of the nine Women’s World Cup titles. They have only met once in Olympic play, in a 2004 semifinal that the U.S. won 2-1 in extra time behind a goal from Heather O’Reilly.

Australia has defeated the U.S. only once in 34 meetings. The teams played to a scoreless draw in the previous Olympics’ group stage and met again in the bronze-medal game, which the U.S. won 4-3.

Morocco and Zambia each made their World Cup debuts last year. Morocco has never qualified for an Olympic women’s soccer tournament. Zambia made its debut in the game in 2021.

Defending Olympic women’s champion Canada will face Colombia, New Zealand, and host France in Group A of the women’s tournament. Spain will play in Group C alongside Japan, Brazil, and April’s Nigeria-South Africa playoff winner.

The men’s Olympic draw also took place on Wednesday, with the U.S. men set to compete at the Olympics this summer for the first time since 2008 after failing to qualify for the previous three editions.

The U.S. men were drawn in Group A alongside host France, New Zealand, and the winner of a playoff between Guinea, the fourth-place team from African qualification, and the fourth-place team from Asian qualifying.

The Olympic men’s soccer tournament is a U-23 competition. Each team is allowed three overage players.

NPFL bans administrators from technical bench

Warns against delays by ball boys

In another step to ensure a successful conclusion of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, which is nearing its final stretch, the league organizers have again issued two practice directives to guard against disruptive conduct, NPFL reports.

In two separate memos to clubs signed by Davidson Owumi, the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, protocols for sitting on the technical bench and the proper conduct of Ball Boys were addressed.

Frowning at the observed deviation from the established protocol for using the technical bench, the memo noted, “We would want to remind all clubs of the proper usage of the technical bench as regards those that are permitted to sit on it during matches.

“The Technical Bench is a reserved area strictly designated for substitute players, coaches, and backroom staff with defined roles to play during a match.”

The memo warned that club chairpersons and General Managers must refrain from sitting on the technical bench during matches.

On the untoward behavior of Ball Boys to disrupt the flow of matches, the NPFL called for a halt to this growing trend.

“Such actions, including withholding balls, delayed return of balls to the field, and other related disruptions, are entirely unacceptable.

“We must emphasize that these actions not only go against the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship but also constitute a clear breach of Rules 1.1 of the Frameworks and Rules”.

Clubs were reminded that by the rules, a fine of N1m would be imposed on erring clubs.
