Al Ahly, ES Tunis, others eye CCL progress

As stage is set for the second leg of the second preliminary round

As the second leg of the second preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League approaches, some of Africa’s top football clubs are poised to secure their places in the group stage.

Al Ahly, ES Tunis, and Mamelodi Sundowns, having registered commanding wins in their first-leg encounters, will look to complete the job this weekend.

Al Ahly vs Gor Mahia: Cairo Awaits Decisive Encounter

Defending champions Al Ahly enter their home tie against Gor Mahia with a comfortable 3-0 aggregate lead.

The Cairo International Stadium will host the clash on Saturday, where Al Ahly is expected to confirm their passage to the group stage.

Despite the formidable challenge, Gor Mahia coach Leonardo Neiva believes his team still has something to offer.

“We have to be realistic because our chances are slim in this confrontation,” admitted Neiva. “But we must try to win the game and adapt to this level of football. It’s crucial to maintain good ball possession.”

Neiva has described the matchup as an ‘unfair pairing’ due to the disparity between the two sides, but Al Ahly remains focused on their quest for a record-extending 13th CAF Champions League title.

Marcel Koller’s men, buoyed by their first-leg performance, will look to dominate from the onset and ensure they advance without any hiccups.

ES Tunis vs Dekedaha: Comfort in Hammadi Agrebi

ES Tunis will host Dekedaha at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi, taking a 4-1 advantage into the second leg.

The Tunisian giants were dominant in their previous encounter, with Youcef Belaili scoring twice and goals from Yan Sasse and Yassine Meriah sealing the victory.

The team will be keen to build on their impressive start as they seek another deep run in the competition.

With a potent attack and solid defense, ES Tunis are favorites to progress, but they will be wary of any complacency that could allow Dekedaha to stage an unlikely comeback.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Mbabane Swallows: Sundowns Look to Cruise

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, under coach Manqoba Mngqithi, are set to face Mbabane Swallows with a commanding 4-0 aggregate lead.

The match, scheduled for Saturday evening at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, sees Sundowns aiming to continue their pursuit of a second CAF Champions League title.

“We’ve made significant progress, but we must remain focused,” Mngqithi stated. “Our goal is to secure a convincing win and build momentum for the group stages.”

With a robust squad and home advantage, Sundowns are expected to dominate the match and secure their place in the next round comfortably.

Moroccan Clubs Seek to Capitalize on First-Leg Draws

In other fixtures, Moroccan representatives Raja Casablanca and AS FAR will both be looking to build on their respective 2-2 draws in the first leg.

Raja faces FC Samartex, while AS FAR takes on Al Merrikh. Both teams will be under pressure to perform in front of their home fans and ensure their spots in the group stage.

As the second leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary round unfolds, the stage is set for thrilling encounters with the continent’s best clubs aiming to assert their dominance and progress further in the prestigious competition.

Zamalek eases past Kenya Police

0

Secures CAF Confederation Cup group stage spot

Zamalek cruised past Kenya Police FC to secure their place in the next round of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, claiming a 2-1 victory in Cairo on Friday night and a comfortable 3-1 win on aggregate.

The Egyptian side, who entered the second leg with a slim 1-0 advantage, put on a solid performance to outclass their Kenyan opponents and move on to the next stage.

Kenya Police, fresh off their FKF Cup triumph, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match. Despite some promising moments, they were often wasteful in possession and failed to capitalize on key scoring opportunities.

Zamalek, however, took control in the second half. Ahmed ‘Zizo’ Sayed broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, expertly volleying a cross past goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to put the White Knights ahead.

Just four minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead in fortuitous fashion. A miscommunication between Police defender Musa Mohamed and Matasi allowed Nasser Maher to pounce on the loose ball and slot it into the net, extending Zamalek’s aggregate lead to 3-0.

Kenya Police briefly clawed their way back into the contest when Jesse Were headed in from a well-placed free-kick in the 65th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The visitors pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but lacked the composure needed to find the back of the net.

Tyson Otieno squandered a golden chance, sending his effort over the bar from close range, while Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamad Sobhi made crucial saves to maintain his side’s lead.

Despite a spirited late surge from Kenya Police, Zamalek held firm and secured a deserved victory.

The Egyptian giants will now turn their attention to the group stage, while Kenya Police shift focus to their domestic campaign.

Meanwhile, Stade Malien also secured their place in the group stage on Friday with a commanding 3-1 victory over Paynesville FC in the second leg of their second preliminary round clash.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the Bamako side overturned the deficit early, thanks to Moctar Cisse’s 10th-minute opener.

Soumaila Magassouba and Souleymane Dramé added two more before the half-hour mark, sealing a dominant display.

Despite a late goal from Paynesville’s Mark Paye, it wasn’t enough to prevent Stade Malien’s progression with a 3-2 aggregate win.

Ivan Toney’s answer for Ange Postecoglou

England striker scores first Al Ahli goal in stunning fashion  display

Toney’s goal was a trademark finish from close range Credit: SSC

Ivan Toney sent a clear message to his doubters after scoring twice for Al Ahli – his first goals for his new club, Phil Spencer reports for talkSport.

The England striker was making his third appearance for the Saudi Pro League side and grabbed a brace and an assist in a 4-2 win over Damac.

Toney showed his poaching qualities as he prodded the ball home to make it 2-1 with his first goal for the club.

The striker was denied the chance to open his account earlier this week when Riyad Mahrez claimed a penalty against Persepolis in the AFC Champions League. – only to miss from 12 yards.

Damac drew the game level, before ex-Liverpool star Roberto Firmino put Al Ahli back in front in injury time.

Amazingly, 15 minutes into added on time, Toney got his second of the game after VAR ruled that he was not offside for his poacher’s effort that wrapped up the win.

The result means that Al Ahli now have seven points from four games, putting them closely behind Saudi’s elite.

Toney’s stunning goalscoring bow came on the same day that Ange Postecoglou spoke out on Tottenham’s pursuit of the player.

Toney joined Al Ahli for £40m after Tottenham opted to sign Dominic Solanke instead Credit: Instagram @alahliclub.sa

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the Brentford forward, but ultimately decided to pay £65million to sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth instead.

Explaining Tottenham’s decision not to sign Toney, Ange Postecoglou said in his press conference: “We looked at him, but the reality was that Dom [Solanke] is the one that I wanted.

“It took the whole summer to get him in, but he was the one that fitted the profile that we wanted.”

Solanke is currently without a goal in three appearances for Tottenham, but his move to north London paved the way for Toney to complete his £40million move to Al Ahli.

After the same number of games for his new club, Toney now has a goal and an assist to his name.

Based on his performances so far, it feels like Toney is going to be very popular indeed in Saudi Arabia.

Algeria’s CR Belouizdad marches on

0

Secures fifth TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group stage appearance

Algeria’s CR Belouizdad FC became the first side to secure a place in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group Stages on Friday evening, after a dramatic tie against Burkinabe side AS Douanes in Algiers, CAFonline reports.

Belouizdad had to dig deep against the west Africans who came into the clash at the back of a 1-0 first leg win at home.

With home ground to their advantage, the Algerians grabbed the lead with a wonder-strike by Abderrahmane Mesiane just before the break to level the aggregate score.

Coming back from the break, both sides had a go at each other in desperate search of the all-important winning goal but were each met by quality defending and goalkeeping from either side.

The tie would eventually end 1-1 on aggregate, with the only decider having to be the lottery of penalties, which saw the hosts advance 4-3 on penalties and become the first side to book a place in the group stages of Africa’s premier club football competition.

CR Belouizdad’s qualification means they now have qualified for the group stages of the competition five times as they gradually build a name for themselves on the continent.

TotalEnergies CAF Champions League action continues over the weekend with interesting ties set to take place across the continent.

English Premier League Matchweek 5 fixtures

0

Ten BIG questions for the weekend’s matches

Alex Keble takes a close look at the main talking points for each of the Matchweek 5 fixtures for premierleague.com

Football writer Alex Keble analyses where the weekend fixtures could be won and lost, including:

– Can Haaland be the king of the chess match?
– How Brentford could put pressure on Postecoglou
– Will Villa sink teeth into struggling Wolves?
– Can Kudus capitalize on Gusto’s absence?
– Is Slot going to inspire positive response to setback?
– Can in-form Vardy or Calvert-Lewin strike decisive blow?
– Will Martin or McKenna enjoy first Premier League win?
– Can Palace kickstart their season against Man Utd?
– Will Brighton get sucker-punched by Forest’s direct attacks?
– Can Howe’s Newcastle eclipse Keegan’s “Entertainers”?

Can Haaland make the difference in another cagey chess match?

There was a time when Manchester City versus Arsenal was full of goals, when high-intensity encounters ending in 5-0, 4-1 and 3-1 wins for Pep Guardiola’s side showcased some of the best of the Premier League’s attacking flair.

But last season that all changed. Mikel Arteta had seen enough action, enough defensive mistakes, and decided to shut up shop. Arsenal sat deep and dug in, keeping clean sheets home and away.

How do you break down a low block as good as Arsenal’s? When Guardiola was asked that question after the 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium in March he puffed out his cheeks and offered the only solution he could think of: “Kill someone?!”

And so begins a new phase of this emerging rivalry, one that takes its cues from the Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho years in the mid-2000s. Get ready for another chess match on Sunday.

MCI  ARS

The thing is, chess doesn’t have to be boring. There will still be intensity, quality and tension.

More than that, as Arsenal showed in a similarly defensive performance at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, in the second half they could open up a little and go for the win.

Meanwhile, Guardiola has had five months to come up with a better idea than the one he had in March’s meeting with Arteta, although he may not need it. With Erling Haaland in this form, Guardiola does have a killer, and that might be the difference.

Best attack v best defence: Who will win Man City v Arsenal?

Adrian Clarke analyses the Gunners’ away form and how Gabriel and Saliba can stop Haaland this Sunday

Will Brentford put Postecoglou under pressure?

The pressure is – ever so slightly – building on Ange Postecoglou, who this week bullishly reasserted that he “always” wins things in his second year.

Spurs have been on the slide for a while now. Since that brilliant first 10 matches of last season they have won only 44 points from the last 32 Premier League games, including four from four this campaign.

It’s their fewest at this stage of a season since 2015/16 and the club have not lost three of their first five matches since 2008/09, when Juande Ramos ended up leaving the club just eight winless matches into that campaign.

There’s no reason to compare Postecoglou to Ramos but nevertheless the Spurs head coach cannot afford to drop more points on Saturday against Brentford.

TOT BRE

Postecoglou’s team have lost seven of their last 11 Premier League matches. Only Wolverhampton Wanderers, with eight losses, have suffered more defeats since that run began on 13 April.

Brentford could make it eight in 12. Thomas Frank’s side know how to sit deep and soak up pressure and how to counter-attack quickly behind a high line. They will copy the Arsenal blueprint, not least by targeting Spurs’ well-documented problem defending set-pieces.

take-ons completed

Since the start of last season only Everton have created a higher Expected Goals (xG) total from set-plays than Brentford. That should worry Postecoglou.

Can Villa reset their home form against struggling Wolves?

Aston Villa’s impressive 3-0 victory at Young Boys in their inaugural UEFA Champions League match this week makes it four wins from five in all competitions at the start of the new campaign – and laughs off any concerns about a six-match winless run that ended last season.

But if any part of that slowdown is still lingering, it’s Villa’s home form.

Unai Emery’s side haven’t won back-to-back league matches at Villa Park since early December. They have won only three of their last eight games at home, and have conceded 26 goals in their last 12 home contests.

Villa have conceded at least twice in 10 of those 12 matches, keeping just one clean sheet: a 2-0 win against this weekend’s opponents, Wolves.

AVL WOL

Here is a chance to reset, then. Wolves have won just one of their last 14 matches in the Premier League and are winless in seven, while only Everton have conceded more than the 11 goals of Wolves.

Coming off the back of an emphatic victory against Young Boys, Villa are well positioned to win consecutive home matches for the first time in nine months. But Emery won’t be satisfied unless the success also comes with a rare clean sheet.

Will West Ham and Kudus punish Chelsea where Bournemouth could not?

The early kick-off on Saturday could be the highlight of the weekend.

WHU CHE

West Ham United have faced 73 shots in the Premier League this season – more than any other side – mainly because they are struggling to compress space in the early days of their major tactical transition from David Moyes to Julen Lopetegui.

Chelsea can be pulled into end-to-end matches if there are chances to tear through the opposition, as we saw in their recent 6-2 victory over Wolves but also, to a lesser extent, in last weekend’s 1-0 win at AFC Bournemouth which could have been higher-scoring.

The Cherries amassed an xG of 1.78 to Chelsea’s 0.78, primarily by targeting right-back Axel Disasi. Marcus Tavernier completed six progressive carries, more than any other player on the pitch, while Disasi missed both of his attempted tackles.

It was a clear mismatch, and in Malo Gusto’s continued absence this weekend, West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus will be licking his lips. No player has had more successful take-ons in the Premier League this season than the 16 of Kudus, who has also created more “big chances”, with two, than any other Hammers player.

If this does indeed become a stretched encounter with chances at both ends, Kudus versus Disasi will be the key battle to keep an eye on.

Can Liverpool bounce straight back after Forest defeat?

Losing to Nottingham Forest was quite the body blow. Everything had been running smoothly for Arne Slot but the nature of his first defeat at Anfield – Liverpool, slow and unsure, never looked like scoring – has raised a few questions about the new regime.

There’s no need to get carried away. There were always going to be bumps on the road in this transitional year post-Jurgen Klopp, although one or two Liverpool supporters might have needed to re-calibrate their expectations after last weekend’s defeat.

But we can legitimately get worried if they lose again on Saturday.

LIV BOU

Liverpool haven’t lost consecutive home Premier League matches since March 2021, when they infamously went on a run of six losses in a row in the stunning low point of the Klopp era.

It would be a significant concern should Liverpool make a habit of losing at Anfield – and AFC Bournemouth could be tricky opponents. Only Brighton & Hove Albion and Man City have had more shots than Bournemouth’s 65 this season.

top 10 shots

Then again, Forest are arguably the worst kind of opponent for a Slot team because they sit so deep and counter-attack so effectively. Bournemouth are more open, more progressive and – in theory – more vulnerable to Liverpool’s attacking play.

Will Vardy or Calvert-Lewin come out on top in crucial six-pointer?

This weekend provides the first and second “six-pointers” of the 2024/25 Premier League season. Southampton host Ipswich Town while Leicester City play Everton at the same time on Saturday.

LEI EVE

The King Power Stadium is likely to be the higher-quality encounter, chiefly because there are two in-form strikers on the prowl.

Jamie Vardy, who has already scored twice this season, has been involved in 12 goals in his last eight league starts against teams starting the day bottom of the table. Even more ominously for Everton fans, Vardy has seven goals in 14 appearances against the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin also has two Premier League goals to his name in 2024/25 and was Everton’s best player in last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Villa Park, scoring in the first half before hitting the crossbar after the break.

Either Vardy or Calvert-Lewin will likely provide the moment of lift-off.

DCL v Vardy

Will Martin or McKenna will get their first Premier League win?

Between them, Southampton and Ipswich – both winless – have scored only three goals in eight Premier League matches this season.

SOU IPS

This looks a key duel because current evidence suggests it will be difficult for BOTH of these promoted clubs to stay up.

Kieran McKenna‘s Ipswich are on their longest winless start to a top-flight season since 1984/85, while Southampton are yet to lead for a single minute of a match and have spent a league-high 208 minutes in a losing position.

The visitors are the favourites.

Ipswich have been considerably more competitive than their hosts, drawing both of their league matches that haven’t been against one of last season’s top three teams. On the other hand, Russell Martin’s Saints have lost all four of their games and are yet to play anyone who finished in the top six last campaign.

What’s more, Ipswich beat Southampton home and away in the Championship last season, winning 1-0 at St Mary’s and 3-2 at Portman Road.

Can Crystal Palace kickstart their season?

Manchester United are not necessarily on the road to recovery.

Their last Premier League match ended in a simple 3-0 victory, but for half an hour Southampton were by far the better team at St Mary’s. Indeed, had Cameron Archer opened the scoring by converting his penalty the result might have been very different.

There is danger at Selhurst Park this weekend.

CRY MUN

Crystal Palace did the double over Man Utd last season, while United have lost two of their last three away matches at Palace. The most recent, in early May, was a thumping 4-0 win for Oliver Glasner’s side.

This might be just the fixture Palace need to end their winless start to the 2024/25 Premier League season and rediscover their spring form.

But this isn’t the same team as the one in May, not quite. Michael Olise, who scored twice in that 4-0 win, has been a huge loss. It’s up to Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has scored 15 goals in 17 matches for Glasner, to fill the void.

How will Hurzeler tactics fare against first fast-break opponents?

Nott’m Forest have already knocked Liverpool off their perch, and now they travel to Brighton looking to repeat the trick in very similar circumstances.

BHA NFO

Fabian Hurzeler’s side, like Slot’s, are built on controlled possession and a solid defensive record, and so, just like Liverpool, this fixture is a big test of Brighton’s ability to deal with an out-and-out counter-attacking team.

The evidence so far isn’t as good as results suggest. Brighton have conceded two goals from an xG of 4.4, suggesting they have got a bit lucky, while only West Ham have had more direct attacks against them than the 12 of Brighton.

Forest, meanwhile, have had 12 direct attacks, more than any other side.

It’s a pretty serious mismatch that suggests Brighton could get counter-attacked and sucker-punched – as Liverpool were.

Hudson-Odoi’s winner v Liverpool

Can Newcastle eclipse the start from Keegan’s “Entertainers”?

Taking 10 points from the first four matches of the season is Newcastle’s best start to a Premier League campaign since Kevin Keegan’s side won 12 points in 1995/96, the year they came so close to winning the title.

FUL NEW

Keegan’s team, dubbed “The Entertainers”, peaked that season, winning 78 points following a brilliant start but falling just short after a collapse in the second half of the season.

Yet even in 1995/96 Newcastle lost their fifth match of the campaign, meaning if Eddie Howe’s side win at Fulham on Saturday they will have more points at this stage than Keegan’s team.

If that isn’t motivation enough, Arsenal facing Man City on Sunday means that there is a possibility Newcastle could be top of the league come Monday.

Red Bull driver punished by F1’s governing body over press conference language

Verstappen was one of several drivers involved in Thursday’s press conferences Image credit: F1

Max Verstappen has been punished by F1’s governing body, the FIA, for using bad language during Thursday’s press conference in Singapore, with the Red Bull driver now obliged “to accomplish some work of public interest,” F1 reports.

Verstappen was summoned to the stewards after swearing in the pre-weekend conference, with the panel reviewing the audio transcript and hearing from the driver and Red Bull team representatives before reaching their decision.

FP1: Leclerc goes fastest from Norris and Sainz during first practice in Singapore

“It is the policy of the FIA to ensure that language used in its public forums, such as press conferences, meets generally accepted standards for all audiences and broadcasts,” read the stewards’ document.

“In particular this is true of statements made by participants in the World Championships and thus being role models both inside and outside the sport.

Now obliged “to accomplish some work of public interest” after the stewards’ decision Image credit: F1

“This is clear in the regulations of the FIA and has been reinforced through previous cases brought before the Stewards in Formula One, in particular in Las Vegas in 2023.

“The Stewards reviewed the transcript of the FIA Thursday Driver Press Conference in Singapore and Max Verstappen, driver of car 1, used language to describe his car at the Event in Azerbaijan which is generally considered ‘coarse, rude’ or may ‘cause offense’ and is not considered suitable for broadcast.

“This is ‘Misconduct’ as defined in Art 20 of the International Sporting Code, and is a breach of Art 12.2.1.k.

“The Stewards noted that the language was not directed at anyone or any group. When summoned to the Stewards the driver explained that the word used is ordinary in speech as he learned it, English not being his native language.

MONZA, ITALY - AUGUST 29: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing looks on in

“While the Stewards accept that this may be true, it is important for role models to learn to be mindful when speaking in public forums, in particular when not under any particular pressure. Verstappen apologized for his behavior.

“The Stewards note that significant fines have been levied for language offensive to or directed at specific groups. This is not the case here.

“But, as this topic has been raised before and is well known by the competitors, the Stewards determined to order a greater penalty than previously and that Verstappen be ‘obliged to accomplish some work of public interest’ (Art. 12.4.1.d of the International Sporting Code), in coordination with the Secretary General for Sport of the FIA.”

Verstappen heads into the Marina Bay weekend with a 59-point advantage over Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, while Red Bull are now second to McLaren – and 20 points adrift – in the constructors’ battle.

Tony Bellew gives his verdict on intriguing clash

The pair meet on Saturday, Christopher Walker reports for DAZN.

Ishmael Davis has a huge opportunity against Josh Kelly this weekend, but Tony Bellew believes the fight may be coming to quickly for him.

The Liverpool man, a former world champion at cruiserweight, is a huge admirer of Davis’ potential, but he’s not sure he’s had enough preparation time for what is the biggest fight of his career.

Davis has replaced Liam Smith at less than a week’s notice and he’ll be hoping he can cause a shock when he goes in with Kelly.

The Sunderland man possesses plenty more experience thanks to his extensive amateur background, and Bellew thinks that the 2016 Olympian might just know a bit too much at this stage.

“Before i speak about the fight, a big well done to Ishmael Davis for backing himself,” said Bellew when speaking exclusively to DAZN.

“Chances like this, to fight on a huge show at Wembley, don’t come around often so Davis has to make the most of it because it might be his only shot.

“I like Davis as a fighter and I think he’s got a bright future, but this is the type of fight where I feel you need everything going in.

“This has come to him with just a few days’ notice and that might show at some stage in the fight. He’s got nothing at all to lose and I think he’ll give a good account, but it just be a fight or two soon and he’ll become a better fighter for the experience.”

Says ‘criticism of Brennan Johnson is justified’

The Tottenham star has faced criticism for performances since joining the club, DAZN reports.

Jamie O’Hara has hit out at Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson and claimed he hasn’t been good enough since he joined the club.

The former Nottingham Forest star has come under pressure from some sections of the Spurs fans for his performances after scoring just six goals in 39 games.

Johnson did net the winner in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Coventry, but talking to Grosvenor Sport, former Spurs midfielder O’Hara thinks there’s still room for improvement.

“I still think the criticism of Brennan Johnson is justified,” he said.

“He hasn’t been good enough since he joined Spurs. I was happy for him when he scored that last minute winner against Coventry, but the criticism still stands and he needs to improve.

“You need to perform at the highest level when you play for Tottenham – you’re not playing for Nottingham Forest anymore where you can have one good game in three and everybody says, ‘oh, he’s a good player!’

“I’d say every footballer in their career at some point as been affected by fans giving them stick. It’s part of the job and everyone goes through it – including me when I played. Players like Brennan need to be hard-nosed and thick skinned and play through it.

“I’ve got no problem at all with him scoring in the 90th minute and giving the middle finger to the fans – I was a big fan of that – but you can’t be too sensitive. You’ve got to be harder mentally to play for Tottenham.”

The North London side host Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow.
