Report: Julian Nagelsmann, Germany bosses see a re-energized Leroy Sané at Bayern Munich

0
Bayern Munich has a deep, talented squad that will always see a handful of starting-caliber players left out of the starting XI reports SB Nation.

In the DFL-Supercup and the first game of the Bundesliga season, Leroy Sané was one of those quality players left on the bench. The former Manchester City man is not sulking, though. In fact, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann and important members of the German national team staff think Sané has been rejuvenated by the heated competition for playing time on the Rekordmeister‘s roster.

According to Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), those important people have been impressed by what they have seen from the Germany international:

Nagelsmann and the staff of the national team have noticed a change in Leroy Sané’s attitude and body language in the past few weeks. Through his short cameos, Sané is looking highly motivated and showing passion on the pitch — an effect of the competition for spots.

With his name bandied about in the transfer market of late, Sané likely wants to prove that he is, indeed, a player who should be in the starting XI.

As many have speculated, a good jolt of energy because of the squad’s stiff competition will not do anything to hurt his chances of getting back to a starting role.

Chelsea close to Barcelona agreement for Frenkie de Jong – Man Utd not yet given up

0

Chelsea are close to an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Frenkie de Jong but are not yet convinced he wants to leave his current club, 90min understands.

According to Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey of 90min, the west London side have in recent weeks joined Premier League rivals Manchester United in pursuit of the Dutch international.

United have already agreed a fee with Barcelona worth an overall €85m to sign the player, though have not advanced the deal any further due to the issue of deferred wages which are still owed to De Jong by Barcelona. Sources indicate United remain confident the player will join them if the issue resolves but Chelsea are now strong competition.

De Jong has spoken to United manager Erik ten Hag on a number of occasions and the Old Trafford club have still not given up on the player, even as they target deals for other midfielders – namely Adrien Rabiot, who is expected to join from Juventus.

Chelsea are now pressing ahead in their move for the De Jong and are close to striking a deal of their own for the player, though will not officially lodge a bid until it’s indicated that he will join them.

United have yet to agree to cover the entire cost of De Jong’s deferred wages – in the region of €17m – to push the deal through, and were hoping for either Barcelona to meet them in the middle or De Jong’s representatives to waive the remainder. Neither Barcelona nor the player’s party have moved an inch.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are prepared to cover the entire cost of the deferred wages to push the deal through. Their offer is set to be worth in the region of €80m, inclusive of the deferred wages and on the condition that Barcelona accept a lower transfer fee to resolve the issue. This bid will though only be lodged when they have an indication from De Jong that he will move.

United are waiting to see how Barcelona deal with the squad registration issue they must deal with ahead of their opening LaLiga fixture this weekend. As many as five new signings have not yet been registered to play in the game, with the Catalans attempting to cut costs in other places.

Barcelona are also interested in signing Bernardo Silva from Manchester City, though the English champions have denied they have agreed a deal for the Portuguese midfielder.

Anthony Joshua told “enormous” Deontay Wilder fight could be next despite Usyk result

0
Top heavyweight Joshua and Wilder have been in talks to fight each other for several years and the American’s manager is still confident the blockbuster clash can be made.
Deontay Wilder ‘s manager Shelly Finkel thinks a fight against Anthony Joshua could still be “enormous” even if the Brit loses his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk, reports the Mirror’s boxing and MMA writer, Harry Davies.

Joshua is aiming to become a three-time heavyweight champion by winning his belts back against Oleksandr Usyk later this month. ‘AJ’ has been on a collision course to fight Usyk for the second time ever since losing his belts to the Ukrainian last September, with the pair meeting again in Jeddah on August 20.

Wilder’s boxing future was unclear following his devastating knockout loss to Tyson Fury in their epic trilogy last October. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ finally broke his silence in May by announcing his return, stating he “must” continue his journey in the sport and win back his world title.

A clash between hard-hitting heavyweights Joshua and Wilder has been proposed for years and Finkel still thinks the fight has some substance. “I believe that fight is enormous even if he loses to Usyk,” he told The Sun. “I don’t know anyone else’s numbers or money, it’s not my business but I heard that the Saudis put up a lot of money for Joshua to fight Usyk over there.

“I don’t believe Joshua vs Usyk now is as big as Fury vs Usyk is and – being for all the belts – the Saudis may step up. Who knows? So there’s a lot of moving pieces but what I do know is there’s four big names at this point and that is Fury, Usyk, Joshua and Deontay. This month, two of those guys will be fighting and that will clarify what the future is.”

Wilder, 36, has been knocked out by WBC champion Fury in his past two fights. The American was in talks to face Joshua in a unification fight four years ago, but he went on to face Fury to kickstart their trilogy. Finkel said Wilder is in good spirits and has recently been training at the UFC’s Performance Institute in Las Vegas.

“I spoke with him on Tuesday, he couldn’t be happier,” Finkel added. “He’s having a great time and he’s getting more attention now than ever before. He’s out in Vegas training and he’s very happy.
“He’s at the UFC gym training, we’re not exactly sure where the next fight will be yet but I would hope to have that together in the next week or so. I think next week we’ll probably have an agreement and then an announcement.”

Who is Michael Knighton? Meet the man who wants to buy Manchester United from the Glazers

0

Former Manchester United director Michael Knighton has confirmed that he and a consortium are in the process of drawing up a bid to try and buy Manchester United from the Glazer family.

The Glazers, who bought United in 2005, are under increasing pressure to sell the club following a hugely underwhelming summer in the transfer window. The appointment of Erik ten Hag as the club’s new manager was supposed to signal the beginning of a new dawn at the club, but a lack of activity in the transfer market has increased pressure on the American family to sell up.

Hundreds of United supporters staged a protest against the Glazers ahead of Sunday’s Premier League season opener against Brighton, marching from MediaCity to Old Trafford. Once inside, anti-Glazer chants rang around the stadium, with Avram Glazer, attending for the first time in almost a year, watching from the directors’ box.

Their ownership of the club has become untenable, with supporters pleading with them to sell up. Perhaps music to the ears of United fans, Knighton has confirmed that he, with the support of a consortium, wants to buy the club. But who exactly is Knighton? Here is everything you need to know about him:

Who is he?

Knighton is a 70-year-old British businessman who started out in life by trying to become a footballer. He secured an apprenticeship as a youngster at Coventry City but was forced to cut his footballing career short because of injury.

Following that, Knighton moved into teaching, becoming a P.E teacher at what is now known as Huddersfield Grammar School. He would later go on to become headteacher at the school, before ditching a teaching career in 1984 to take up property interests.

Five years later, Knighton announced his arrival in the world of football, submitting a £20million bid to purchase United. At the time, it was a record offer to purchase a British football club and it was accepted by chief executive Martin Edwards, leading to Knighton, somewhat prematurely, announcing his arrival at the club by taking to the pitch in a full United kit prior to the team’s opening game of the 1989-90 league season against Arsenal.

Following several weeks of discussions and negotiations, though, key investors withdrew and Knighton abandoned his bid to buy the Reds, instead opting for a seat on the board of directors. After failing to buy United he went on to purchase Carlisle United in 1992 and left ten years later after the club was put into voluntary administration. He has not been involved in football since.

What would his bid mean?

Hopefully, better times, at the very least. Although he has not worked in football for several years, Knighton knows United inside out and clearly holds the club dearly to his heart, serving the club’s board between 1989 and 1992.

Knighton would not have the financial might to fund a deal to buy the club on his own and would require the support of a consortium to make his bid possible, which is the route he is going down.

What has Knighton said about buying United and the current state of the club?

“We are a club in crisis and we all know the reason why,” he told Man Utd The Religion this week. “We have inept and frankly useless ownership who know little about this game of football.

“Everyone knows that we need new ownership of this football club and that is my aim and my objectives. I am making good progress, continuing to talk to the people, I have got some good pledges and good finance.

When is Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk 2? Fight date and time information

0

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will share the ring again this month, as the heavyweights go head to head with the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO titles on the line in Saudi Arabia, Alex Pattle the Independent’s combat correspondence writes.

The pair’s rematch comes 11 months after their initial clash, which saw Usyk comprehensively outpoint Joshua in the Briton’s own backyard, taking the belts from “AJ” at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Now Joshua, 32, will seek to regain the titles for the second time in his career as he faces the unbeaten Ukrainian in Jeddah. In 2019, Joshua lost the belts to Andy Ruiz Jr at New York City’s Madison Square Garden with a stoppage defeat, before avenging that result with a decision win against the Mexican-American in Saudi Arabia at the end of that year.

Can Joshua replicate that feat by handing Usyk, 35, the first loss of the southpaw’s professional career?

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the seismic rematch.

When is it?

Usyk vs Joshua 2 will take place at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia on Saturday 20 August.

Ring walks for the main-event contest are expected to take place at around 9pm BST (1pm PT, 3m CT, 4pm ET).

How can I watch it?

Sky Sports Box Office will be the only place to watch the fight in the UK and Ireland.

The pay-per-view event will cost £26.95 in the UK and €31.95 in Ireland.

2022 World Cup in Qatar set to start day earlier than originally planned

0
Qatar’s game with Ecuador, originally scheduled for Monday 21 November, is now expected to be moved to the Sunday

The World Cup in Qatar is set to kick-off a day earlier than originally planned to allow the host nation to play the first game of the tournament, the Independent reports.

The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar’s game on 21 November against Ecuador – which created the unusual situation of two matches being held before the ceremony.

Normally the ceremony is conducted before the kick-off of the first game of the tournament.

The Group A match between Senegal vs Netherlands and the Group B match between England and Iran were scheduled to take place before the ceremony on the Monday.

The plan has to be voted on by the heads of Fifa’s six regional confederations and president Gianni Infantino but, despite the late notice, is expected to win support.

The switch to an opening ceremony and game on Sunday 20 November would allow the Senegal vs Netherlands match, scheduled for 1pm local time on 21 November, to kick off later in the day.

The Group B matches on that day, which also include the United States vs Wales, would be unaffected.

Chris Eubank Jr battles Conor Benn on Oct.8th on DAZN pay-per-view in London

0
Brian Webber reports that British fans are over the moon with yesterday’s announcement for the Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn catchweight fight on October 8th on DAZN PPV at the O2 Arena in London.
According to the Boxing News 24 writer, there’s no word yet what the catchweight will be for the Eubank Jr-Benn fight, which is odd because that’s something that the boxing public would like to know.

The catchweight will likely be one that greatly favors the 24-year-old Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) because he’s moving up in weight from 147, and he’s a big money-maker for Matchroom. 156 is the probable number, but it wouldn’t be a shock if it’s set even lower at 155.

Again, Benn is the guy that is bringing in money for Eddie Hearn, and that gives him the A-side advantage to call the shots when it comes to the catchweight.

Both of these fighters have taken advantage of the popularity of their more talented fathers, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. Those guys were real warriors throughout their careers and didn’t need to resort to catchweights for their fights.

Most would agree that if former IBO super middleweight champion Eubank Jr. (32-2, 23 KOs) isn’t weight drained, he’s going to win an easy decision or knockout against the far less experienced Benn.

Eubank Jr has been in with bigger punchers than Benn during his career, and he won’t be phased by his power coming up in weight from 147.

Chris Jr is ranked #1 WBA, #2 WBO, and #3 WBC at middleweight and poised to get a title shot against one of the champions. It would be interesting to see Eubank Jr take on WBC champion Jermall Charlo or IBF/WBA champ Gennadiy Golovkin soon.

“He has walked the same path as I have. I know his struggle. Living in the shadow of a legend and trying to break out of that shadow and make his own name,” said Eubank Jr about Benn. “If he can beat me, his name will be made, and he will never walk in his father’s shadow again.”

Eubank Jr vs. Benn will interest British fans, but likely not the U.S public because neither guy has done much during their respective careers. Although Eubank Jr started his career with a lot of anticipation from fans, he’s been a disappointment because of his failure to step it up against elite-level opposition.

For his part, Benn has been fighting older fighters that were never elite in their youth, and it’s becoming clear that he’s never going to fight the best.

In other words, Benn appears to be heading down the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr path in choosing safe fights for easy paydays rather than taking risks.

Benn is ranked #4 WBA, #4 WBO, #5 IBF, and #5 WBC at 147, but his opposition has left a lot to be desired.

Conor’s best wins:

  • Chris Algieri
  • Samuel Vargas
  • Adrian Granados
  • Chris Van Heerden
  • Sebastian Formella

“This fight is for the legacy and was an opportunity I felt I couldn’t pass up,” said Benn. “I’m looking for a World Championship fight very soon.”

PGA Tour wins first legal battle against LIV Golf as players are denied restraining order, kept out of FedEx Cup Playoffs

0
According to Golf Digest’s Joel Beall, a judge in U.S. District Court denied a motion Tuesday afternoon to three LIV Golf members seeking to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, giving the PGA Tour the first victory in the legal battle between the tour and the Saudi-backed circuit.

As part of the lawsuit filed by Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and nine others against the PGA Tour last week, three players—Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones—attempted to get a temporary restraining order to play in this week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Gooch, Swafford and Jones had argued that the tour had inflicted “irreparable harm” by keeping the players, who had been suspended by the tour for their participation in LIV Golf events, out of the tour’s postseason.

However, in a San Jose courtroom, Judge Beth Freeman sided with the tour.

“LIV contracts are based upon players calculation of what they were leaving behind,” Freeman said, adding they had not established a likelihood of success by their merits in the overall antitrust case.

In a two-hour spectacle, lawyers for both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour at times seem to be making cases for the other side. A LIV Golf legal representative called the FedEx Cup the “Super Bowl of golf,” while PGA Tour representation claimed the LIV Golf event at Trump Bedminster had more “elite” players than the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. And Judge Freeman appeared to be poking holes in both sides, taking exception with PGA Tour Comissioner Jay Monahan’s ability to have absolute say in suspending players while questioning if, someday, the tour would be the party filing antitrust action against LIV Golf.

In its response to the original TRO motion, the tour had argued that the LIV players were “fabricating an emergency” and questioned the timing of the filing. Judge Freeman did not agree, feeling the filing was timely. But Freeman also said the LIV players are making double than what they made on tour, thus hurting the case that the tour suspensions were truly causing harm.

Following the defeat LIV Golf issued the following statement: “We’re disappointed that Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones won’t be allowed to play
golf. No one gains by banning golfers from playing.”

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan sent a memo to players after the ruling was announced that doubled as a statement from the tour:

“With today’s news, our players, fans and partners can now focus on what really matters over the next three weeks: the best players in the world competing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, capping off an incredibly compelling season with the crowning of the FedExCup champion at the Tour Championship.”

After the ruling Judge Freeman set the timeline for the remainder of the Mickelson vs. PGA Tour lawsuit. The trial, in which LIV Golf asserts antitrust actions by the PGA Tour, is set to begin in September 2023.

Ligue 1 club Marseille have confirmed the signing of free agent Alexis Sanchez after rescinding his contract at Inter Mark Gallagher reports in 90 Min.

After weeks of negotiations between the forward and I Nerazzurri, the two parties finally came to an agreement to terminate the player’s contract on Monday.

“The Chilean international with 143 caps, who won 17 trophies in his career, will commit himself to Olympique in the next few hours after passing his medical tests.”

OM kickstarted their 2022/23 Ligue 1 campaign with a bang on Sunday evening, thumping Reims 4-1 thanks to a brace from Luis Suarez, an own goal from Wout Faes and a rocket from Nuno Tavares on his debut.

De Jong and Ter Stegen set to leave FC Barcelona as free agents after contracts annulled

0
FC Barcelona stars Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are set to leave the club as free agents after their contracts are annulled due to alleged criminal activity Tom Sanderson reports in Forbes.

Bombshell news reported on Monday saw it revealed how the club’s current board led by Joan Laporta have discovered that contracts signed by four players – De Jong, Ter Stegen, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique – during the rule of Laporta’s predecessor Josep Bartomeu have been found to show evidence of alleged ‘criminality’.

The club wants the arrangements agreed upon to be annulled, and the players to resort back to their old deals with the threat of potential legal action for all concerned if they don’t tow the line.

As Bartomeu scrambled to find ways of coping with Barca’s pandemic losses as the club sunk into debts of around $1.5bn, he had Pique renew until 2024, Ter Stegen until 2025 and Lenglet and Frenkie de Jong until 2026 on October 20, 2020 before then resigning in a cloud of controversy a week later.

While Pique has already agreed to drastically reduce his salary, Lenglet is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur and there hasn’t been much news about how his case will be dealt with.

As for Ter Stegen and De Jong, though, resorting back to their original arrangements would remarkably see them become free agents in June 2023 and 2024 respectively.
This means that if the German goalkeeper doesn’t get tied down soon, he will have permission to negotiate with other clubs from January onward to join them for nothing next summer, in what would be a catastrophic loss for the Blaugrana on a figure regarded as one of the best players in his position in world football and therefore able to command a high transfer fee in normal circumstances.
There is of course more time to play with when it comes to De Jong. But given the circus that he has had to endure this summer with his name linked to moves to Manchester United and Chelsea, he would be within his rights to go back to his old contract, wait the 2022/2023 season out to see how things develop, and then go into the last 12 months of his contract next term before testing the waters of free agency in the first six months 2024.

As the 25-year-old joined Barca from Ajax in a €75mn ($76.6mn) deal in 2019, and the Catalans were said to have agreed an €85mn ($86.8mn) a transfer for him with Manchester United last month, seeing De Jong walk free of charge is also unthinkable.

Should things turn out this way, it would be yet another example of Bartomeu causing the club further damage despite having exited Camp Nou some time ago.

Simultaneously, however, both men have shown that they love life in Catalonia, and therefore might be willing to cave in and reach a compromise when all is said and done.
