UFC 278 card: Usman vs Edwards and all fights this weekend

1

Leon Edwards will seek to avenge a loss to Kamaru Usman when the pair clash in the main event of UFC 278 this weekend, as the Briton also attempts to become Britain’s second ever UFC champion.

Usman earned a decision victory over Edwards in 2015 as part of an ongoing 19-fight win streak, which led the Nigerian-American to the welterweight title in 2019.

Usman, 35, has since retained the title in five straight bouts, with two wins against Colby Covington, two against Jorge Masvidal, and one against Gilbert Burns. As such, the “Nigerian Nightmare” has declared that he is “lapping” the opposition, a point that he would drive home with a second victory over Edwards.

Edwards, 30, has bounced back from his loss to Usman with nine wins in a row, most recently outpointing Nate Diaz in June 2021 after dominating the fan favourite for five rounds.

Here’s all you need to know about UFC 278.

Anthony Joshua ‘could retire’ if he loses Oleksandr Usyk rematch

1
It’s a career-defining fight for Joshua and one which could swing the direction of the long-time Tyson Fury rival#s career, reports Manchester Evening News boxing writer, Charlie Wilson.
Sky Sports analyst and former boxer Johnny Nelson believes Anthony Joshua may retire should he lose to Oleksandr Usyk this weekend.

The fight will take place at Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Super Dome and sees ‘AJ’ hoping to regain his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles after losing them to former cruiserweight Usyk last year. The Ring Magazine heavyweight title has also been added after Tyson Fury vacated the belt in the wake of his retirement decision.

Joshua has admitted that he was properly prepared for 12 rounds when he last faced former cruiserweight Usyk last year, he lost by unanimous decision to the Ukrainian. He has since replaced his coach Rob McCracken with American former Ring Magazine Coach of the Year Robert Garcia in an attempt to regain his titles.

The 32-year-old British fighter knows that this is a career-defining fight for him. Should he win, he’s back on the apex in the heavyweight division. But should he lose, where does he go from here – who could he realistically face to earn his way back towards a title?

Writing in an article for Sky Sports, Nelson said: “We’ll be looking at a completely different animal now because he knows what Usyk is capable of doing and he knows what mistakes he made.

“But if Usyk beats him, I reckon he’ll walk away. He’s not a backing dancer; it’s not in his DNA to want to be hanging on knowing that there’s a guy in that division that can beat you. It’s a fighter’s mentality.

“He doesn’t want to hang about to be a backing dancer; he wants to be the best guy. So, therefore with this fight here with Anthony Joshua, it’s so important for his career. He knows that this might be the last big fight he’s in. It’s not in his DNA to stand back and be a gatekeeper for anybody.
Nelson, like many others have stated that Joshua cannot attempt to outbox Usyk as he did in his last fight, but must try his size and strength to his advantage.

Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy Was “Predator” Pursuing Women, Rape Trial Hears

1
According to England based NDTV, an English court on Monday heard that Manchester City and France footballer Benjamin Mendy, on trial for rape and sexual assault, was a “predator” who callously pursued vulnerable women…..

An English court on Monday heard that Manchester City and France footballer Benjamin Mendy, on trial for rape and sexual assault, was a “predator” who callously pursued vulnerable women. Mendy, 28, is on trial at Chester Crown Court in northwest England, facing eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, relating to seven young women.

The Premier League star has pleaded not guilty to all the charges in a complex trial that is expected to last 15 weeks. The jury trial opened last week and the prosecution began their opening arguments on Monday.

Prosecutor Timothy Cray told the court that Mendy and his co-defendant, Louis Saha Matturie, were “predators, who were prepared to commit serious sexual offences” as they pursued women.

Cray alleged that Mendy behaved with “callous indifference” to women who were “vulnerable, scared, isolated”.

Matturie’s job was “to find young women and to create the situations where those young women could be raped and sexually assaulted”, he argued.

The men “turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game and if women got hurt or distressed, too bad,” the lawyer said.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place between July 2012 and August last year.

Matturie, 40, has also pleaded not guilty to eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault.

None of the women said to have been assaulted can be named under English law, which also places restrictions on what can be reported about the case.

Mendy joined Premier League champions City from French side Monaco in 2017. He has played 75 times for Manchester City, but his playing time was limited by injuries and a loss of form.

He was suspended by City after being charged by police in August last year.

The last of Mendy’s 10 international caps came in November 2019. The defender picked up a World Cup winner’s medal after playing just 40 minutes of France’s successful 2018 campaign in Russia.

The trial comes as former Manchester United star player and Wales manager Ryan Giggs is on trial at Manchester Crown Court on charges of assaulting his former partner by headbutting her and submitting her to controlling and coercive behavior.

Neymar ‘thinks Kylian Mbappe has stabbed him in the back’ as PSG tensions rise

1

NEYMAR and Kylian Mbappe have a rocky relationship at PSG, with tensions rising in their 5-2 win over Montpellier on Saturday night, Jack Otway reports.

The Express reports that Brazilian attacker, Neymar thinks PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe has stabbed him in the back, according to reports in Spain. The duo have been allies at the Parc des Princes ever since joining the club in the summer transfer window of 2017. But all isn’t well behind the scenes, with the pair involved in an argument during Saturday’s 5-2 win over Montpellier.

And, when the reigning champions were awarded another spot-kick towards the end of the first half, he insisted he should be the one to take it.

Neymar then proceeded to argue with Mbappe and eventually dispatched the effort himself, before netting again in the second half.

And with the duo’s relationship worsening, Mundo Deportivo has now provided an intriguing update on the situation.

It’s claimed that, back in the summer, Mbappe tried to ‘force’ PSG into selling Neymar after he decided to turn down Real Madrid in order to stay in France.

There had, previously, been the expectation the 2018 World Cup winner would move to the Bernabeu after much speculation.

Yet Mbappe, after being promised he would be the main man at PSG ahead of both Neymar and Lionel Messi, then decided to stick – rather than twist.

The report says Neymar now feels as though he’s been ‘stabbed in the back by his teammate due to Mbappe trying to get him to leave.

And the Brazilian apparently criticized his attacking partner for what he perceived to be a ‘dirty game’.

Neymar has added further fuel to the fire by ‘liking’ a social media post that criticized Mbappe for trying to take the penalty, despite missing his previous effort.

And it’s clear the PSG duo will have to resolve their differences as they look to win every possible trophy with Christophe Galtier at the helm.

Mbappe also went viral during the match with Montpellier for appearing to give up on an attack, with the France international just stopping as his team-mates went forward.

Galtier has now explained that incident, however, with the 55-year-old defending his talisman by saying: “Kylian played his last game three weeks ago so I knew it was going to be tough on a physical level for him.

“He’s a competitor. He wants to be good and he wants to be good quickly, but a top footballer is not on and off like that; it takes a little time to regain 100 per cent of his athletic abilities.

“When he’s at 100 per cent, he’ll make the difference even more.
“These are players who like to score, who want to score, who attack.
“It’s a bit normal for him to be disappointed at being a little short physically compared to his teammates.”
Galtier also refused to name PSG’s first-choice penalty taker, too.
Speaking after the row between Neymar and Mbappe, the Frenchman said: “For this match, the order was chosen thus.
“Kylian shot first, so it was logical that Neymar went next. We’ll see in the future.”

PSG star Marco Verratti, meanwhile, insisted Mbappe’s sulk was ‘normal’.

“With the penalty, he sulked a bit but that’s normal. He’s a great player, he wants to make a difference,” said the Italy international.

“It’s good when he’s angry, it means he cares about this team.”

Barcelona transfer chaos as new signings Christensen and Kessie could leave for FREE if not registered by Saturday

0
BARCELONA pair Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie could sensationally LEAVE as free transfers without playing a competitive match writes The Sun’s reporter Jake Lambourne.
Both men arrived for nothing at the Nou Camp earlier in the window after running their contracts down at Chelsea and AC Milan respectively.
But with three days to go until the start of the new LaLiga season, they are yet to be registered with the Spanish league.

It was claimed last month how the Blaugrana were unable to register the duo due to financial fair play restrictions.

And according to ESPN, they could now leave for free if they aren’t registered before Barca’s opener against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

They state that they may decide to execute a clause in their deals in Catalonia that will see their contracts ripped up.

It has also been said that fellow new arrivals Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde are also yet to be registered.

But their situation is different as they were not snapped up on free transfers.

The news outlet has declared that while Christensen and Kessie have an option to leave, there is no suggestion it will come to that.

And if that looked to be a possibility, the club would speak to their team to avoid such an embarrassing outcome.

As well as Barca’s new arrivals, they also haven’t been able to register Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto after they penned new deals.

With Barca struggling for funds, they are hoping to offload Frenkie de Jong, despite the midfielder wanting to stay.

It has been claimed how Chelsea are closing in on a £67.6million agreement for the Holland international.

Manchester United are said to be refusing to give up hope of landing him with Erik ten Hag making the ex-Ajax ace his No1 target.

Robert Lewandowski makes Thiago admission after Barcelona transfer deal

0
Liverpool partly has Robert Lewandowski to curse for Sadio Mane calling time on his Anfield career this summer, after Bayern Munich identified the Senegal international as the perfect replacement for their prolific striker.

Having burst onto the scene in Germany with Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund over a decade ago, the Poland international joined Bayern in the summer of 2014. And despite being on the verge of his 34th birthday, he has shown no signs of slowing down as he continues to plunder goals for fun and remains one of the planet’s deadliest finishers.

Scoring 447 goals from 562 games during his 12 seasons in Germany, winning every major honour on offer to him along the way, Lewandowski was understandably hungry for a new challenge and, having always wanted to play in La Liga, forced through a move to Barcelona last month as a result.

Liverpool had tentatively been linked with Lewandowski in the past but there was never any possibility of a reunion with Klopp for the striker, with the veteran deciding Barcelona was the only move for him. And while his own wantaway desires ignited a transfer merry-go-round including Mane, there were no hard feelings back on Merseyside.
Quoted by Sport , the 33-year-old revealed that his former Bayern team-mate, Thiago Alcantara, had been in contact with him after he joined the Catalans, with the Reds midfielder starting his own career at Camp Nou. However, he admits he didn’t speak to his former manager Pep Guardiola about the switch.
“Guardiola’s philosophy and his style of caring for and managing the team I think basically were Barca at Bayern Munich,” he said. “Xavi is very similar to Guardiola. They were both ‘6’, they worked together. They think about football in the same way. With that memory in mind, Barca was the only option for me and it was a great preparation when I was there.
