Anthony Joshua tipped to quit boxing if he suffers rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk

0

David Hayes believes Anthony Joshua could retire from boxing if he loses his rematch with Oleksander Usyk.

The 32-year-old will attempt to win back his world title belts for the second time when facing the Ukrainian in Saudi Arabia next month.

A potential unification fight with Tyson Fury could present itself to Joshua if he can secure the victory, but former champion Haye reckons defeat could spell the end of his fighting career.

“If he doesn’t win, I am not sure AJ wants to be in a sport where he knows he is not the best,” said the 41-year-old.

“He got out-hustled by someone he knows he can beat; he just got it wrong. If he brings a great game plan, and does everything he’s supposed to do to beat Usyk, and Usyk still beats him, then what more is there to do?

“He’s then not number one. He is such a winner… does he regroup? I’m not sure. At the moment he believes he has all capabilities to beat Usyk, and I think physically he has. All he needs to do is tactically get it right and he should be able to beat Usyk.

“Hopefully his team give him the right instructions, and he can go out there and fulfill what most of us believe is his destiny.”

Anthony Joshua targets ‘comeback king’ title as he vows to recover from ‘blip’ and win Oleksandr Usyk rematch

0

Anthony Joshua insists he will be “the comeback king” for a second time when he takes on Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on August 20.

Joshua was outclassed and outpointed in 12 rounds against Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September for the second loss of his professional career.

But he is adamant he will win back his heavyweight world titles when the rematch takes place in Saudi Arabia as he had done against Andy Ruiz Jr.

“I’m the comeback king,” he said on Tuesday. “You can put me down but it’s difficult to keep me down. Even through my tough times, everything will make sense in the long run.

“The hunger’s still there. Blips happen, things happen in life but resilience, mental toughness, consistency will always prevail. I’m still on the road to undisputed [heavyweight champion]. This is just a little blip on the road. I’m focused on the target and goal and, God willing, I’ll perform and became three-time heavyweight champion of the world.”

Antonio Conte talks up Lucas Moura as ‘good option’ at wing-back for Tottenham with Victor Moses comparison

0

Antonio Conte believes Lucas Moura could prove a useful option at wing-back for Tottenham this season.

The Brazilian started in the position against Sevilla on Saturday as Spurs brought an end to their tour of South Korea with a 1-1 draw, getting the nod ahead of both Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal.

With Djed Spence’s move to the club effectively done, it’s a position that Tottenham have already have strength in depth in, though Conte has hinted Lucas may get more opportunities in the future.

The Spurs boss has worked with a number of wingers in the past and turned them into effective wing-backs, including new signing Ivan Perisic, and his comments after the Seville match suggest there could be a new name to add to the list.

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me,” Conte said.

“In the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option.

“The most important thing is that the player has to be 100 per cent sure to do it, but he is available and Lucas Moura for us is a great resource because he can play in many roles. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing back.

“I’m very happy for his commitment for what I’m seeing in the training sessions and tonight I think he played a good game.”

Diaspora Sports: Basketball

The fifty-eight 2022 NBA draft features seven new recruits who fully or partially fly African national flags.

The 76th edition of the annual draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York saw Ochai Agbaji of Nigerian blood emerge a No. 14 pick after leading Kansas to their first NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament since 2008.

Agbaji, 22, is a Nigerian American picked by Cleveland Cavaliers will team up with another Nigerian-born star on the upstage, Isaac Okoro, drafted by the same team in the 2020 NBA draft.

Though, listed as a French national, Dieng definitely sounds Senegalese. While the Knicks draft Dieng and Ochai are first-round picks, the others are second-round choices.

The Clippers’ number 43 draft Moussa Diabate is of Malian and Guinean blood, though he also represents France like Dieng. Ismael Kamagate is the Piston’s pick at number 46. He is of Ivorian heritage, though he represents France.

Newcastle looks elsewhere as Isak’s wage bill stalls transfer

0

When one door is closed, look elsewhere. That is Newcastle United’s modest approach as the club backs away from the Alexander Isak deal after learning that their Real Sociedad striker target is insisting on a staggering £200,000-a-week wage to make the move to Newcastle.

The Magpies were initially considering a club-record bid for a striker, with the Sweden international top on their wanted list. Desperation for a striker is mounting in Newcastle as the English side struggles to balance the team having adequately fortified their defense during the ongoing transfer.

A winger was the main focus with Moussa Diaby the target but a deal for Bayer Leverkusen superstar was always going to be extremely expensive. This forced the Tyne Castle side to turn their sight to signing a striker.

At £110,000-a-week, Kieran Trippier is top earner in Newcastle meaning that Isak is demanding close to the double of Trippier’s weekly wage, smashing the side’s salary setup.

Koulibaly arrives London for Chelsea Move

Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly begins his hastened entrance into the English Premier League with his arrival in London for his medical test ahead of completing his summer switch from Napoli to Chelsea.

The Senegal international is nearing the completion of his frenetic transfer to the Blues following the unexpected but escalated transfer interest of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who is under intense pressure to refurbish his back line with the departure of Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid this Summer.
The 31 year old Senegalese defender will seal a 5 year contract with Chelsea that will cost the ‘Blues’ £30m if he passes his medical. Koulibaly will then fly out from Cobham to the USA where he will connect with his new teammates on their ongoing oversea training tour.

Super Falcons hangs on to hope to win WAFCON

The Super Falcons sealed their qualification for the 2023 Women’s World Cup with the victory against Indomitable Lionesses at the Complexe Sportif Mohamed V in Casablanca in the ongoing African women’s football championship in Morocco.

The defending champions depended on in-form attacker Rasheedat Ajibade’s lone strike in their quarter-final tango to oust the Indomitable Lionesses and set-up a semifinal showdown with Morocco.

Should Nigeria’s Super Falcons overpower the host nation on Monday, this could lineup a rematch of their opening Group A encounter with South Africa’s Bayana Bayana, who must equally defeat Zambia’s Copper Girls to make such a finals match-up realistic.

The earlier encounter between the Nigerian women’s national side and their South African counterpart in the group stages ended in an upset 2-1 defeat for the Super Falcons.

Randy Waldrum brought in Francisca Ordega, Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde in place of Uchenna Kanu, Peace Efih and Nicole Payne to his Super Falcons squad that beat Burundi 4-0 few days ago.

On the other hand, Gabriel Zabo kept fate with his team that defeated Tunisia 2-0 in their previous match keeping Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene, Ajara Nchout Njoya, Michaela Abam and Aurielle Awona in the lineup.

Napoli makes plans for life without Osimhen

0

Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly known as Napoli, are gradually accepting the realities of a future life without star striker Victor Osimhen.

The Calcio Serie A giants are weighing available options as replacement for their Nigeria international striker should he leave for greener pastures.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja who is the current apple of the eye of premier league side West Ham, is seen by Napoli as a top option to replace the Nigerian, as the added transfer interest of English side Arsenal force Napoli into a reality check.

According to the Italian publication Il Mattino, Napoli are likely going to view the Albanian striker with keener interest should any club match their £80m asking price for the 23-year-old Nigerian striker this summer.

Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli will however be forced into a contest with David Moyes’ West Ham as the Hammers have stepped up their endeavors to recruit Broja this summer.

Neymar posts euphoric vacation photos amid Chelsea link

0

The Talented Brazilian forward has come under criticism in the past few seasons following his underperformance, failing to meet expectations since joining the French side.

Neymar, who left Barcelona for a record fee of €222m in 2017, believing he was under the shadow of Lionel Messi, seems to have been graced by a giant shadow in Paris Saint-Germain.

The 30-year-old has fallen in the pecking order in the eyes of the fans, rated below young French star Kylian Mbappé, who has consistently delivered for the Ligue 1 champions.

Since he moved to Parc des Princes, Neymar has managed to score 100 goals in all competitions for the Les Parisiens, less than Mbappé’s 171.

Despite making 144 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, the gifted attacker has drawn criticism from many pundits and has been labeled an inconsistent player.

Neymar is linked with a move away from the French club this summer, with reports mentioning Chelsea as his next destination.

Image of Neymar and his girlfriend Bruna Biancardi

The Brazilian international appears unfazed by the news surrounding his future after posting a photo of himself on vacation with a Brazilian sprinter, Paulo Andre, and his girlfriend, Bruna Biancardi, with the caption, “The most beautiful little blacks in Brazil.”

According to reports, Paris Saint-Germain is open to selling Neymar at a fair bargain, which has linked him with a move to Chelsea, guided by his former manager, Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea wants to bolster their attacking options this summer following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan on a season-long loan.

The Premier League club endured a mixed season without a goal poacher after Romelu Lukaku failed to deliver for the Blues on his return from Inter Milan for a £97.5m record fee.

After missing out on trophies and losing two finals against Liverpool last season, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is looking for attackers to help his team compete in the coming campaign.

The Premier League club is currently pushing to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha after hijacking the deal from Arsenal, who were considered the front runners to submit a £60m bid for the Brazilian, which the club has accepted.

Chelsea is also in advanced talks with Manchester City for England’s winger Raheem Sterling, and Neymar has appeared as the third player to be linked with Chelsea.

Chelsea needs players that can score goals to compete with other clubs, and Neymar could be the ideal player for Thomas Tuchel’s side if he stays fit.
