Transfer Talks – 19/7/2022

Newcastle United hunt for Dennis signing

From: Watford

To: Newcastle United

Fee: £20m

Newcastle United are focusing on strengthening the team’s attack before the start of the new Premier League season.

The club told Manager Eddie Howe to sign one of Maxwell Cornet of Burnley, or Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis.

Club sources claim the Magpies’ gaffer would prefer the signature of a Nigerian international.

Dennis scored ten times and helped create six additional premier league goals for Watford last season. Watford has placed a £20 million valuation on Dennis this summer.

Newcastle is likely to go into the market for such a modest price for a top-rated forward.

Cameroonian-born Jules Kounde could seal Chelsea or Barcelona move this week

From: Sevilla

To: Barcelona/Chelsea

Fee: €60m

Sevilla re-entered into negotiations with Chelsea and Barcelona for their star player Joules Kounde making it likely that another defender could be on the move this week.

Kounde’s preference is a move to Barca but the Catalans may be cash strapped for a deal after the exorbitant purchases of Robert Lewandowski and Raphael Raphinha.

Chelsea is determined for talks for Kounde after failing to sign De Ligt and is the most likely destination for the Frenchman.

The Peoples Club of Nigeria International, Dallas Fort Worth (PCNIDFW) is supporting the provider role of Houston Texans’ offensive lineman, Cedric Ogbuehi, in building homes for the underprivileged in Nigeria.

The veteran offensive lineman is a founder of Destiny Foundation, a giving group devoted to constructing households for Nigerians who are too poor to own a house.

The Destiny Foundation was conceptualized after Kelly, Ogbuehi’s mother, made a vow to help the poor in her place of origin, Nigeria, as she battled breast cancer in 2006. Ogbuehi acceded to actualising his mom’s solemn promise of becoming co-founder of the foundation.

The Texan’s offensive lineman’s dad, Chris, is also not new to philanthropy. Chris is the first vice-chairman of PCNIDFW, a Dallas, Texas-based nonprofit organization steeped in giving out to the communities.

Through Chris’ connection, PCNIDFW has become a source of moral and financial backing for Destiny Foundation.

Destiny Foundation has been instrumental in changing lives for the poor in Nigeria, where Ogbuehi’s parents originate.

Ogbuehi signed for his newest NFL franchise, Houston Texans, as a free agent on March 18, 2022, where he now unites with Texans offensive lineman coach George Warhop, with whom he worked at the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.

He attended and played amateur football for his school Texas A&M. Ogbuehi was a number 21, the first-round draft of Cincinnati in the 2015 NFL Draft. He then devoted his first four seasons in the NFL (2015-18) with the Bengals covering for quarterback Andy Dalton.

In 2019, Ogbuehi signed for the Jacksonville Jaguars and joined Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in March 2020.

Sublime skills aplenty are unparalleled by officiating and administration in semi-finals games of the women’s Africa cup of nations

0

The WAFCON semi-final games yesterday in Morocco mirrored the yawning chasm between the various levels of football administration and the standard of the game in the continent.

While the games produced jaw-dropping sublime soccer displays from the sides, the officiating and administrative side of African football was abysmal.
The ineptitude of the host nation in crowd control and the elusiveness of the confederation of African Football (CAF) stalwarts to be malleable to manage the game and competitions in the continent effectively, were evident.

The semi-finals games-Zambia versus South Africa and hosts Morocco versus Nigeria-both ended with major refereeing controversies.

The Video Assistant referee (VAR) played a controversial role in deciding both encounters. In the first semi-final encounter, a controversial VAR decision awarded Bayana Bayana of South Africa what most believed was a soft last-minute penalty kick.

Linda Motlhalo gleefully dispatched the stoppage time booboo spot kick into the Zambian net paving a pathway for the South Africans into a highly contentious WAFCON 2022 final.

“Shame on you CAF. Thanks for using VAR to ruin women’s football in Africa. Against Zambia and as well against Nigeria. If this was a Nigerian, it would have been a Third Red Card. But VAR never called the referee. Hope CAF legalized the green lasers used on Super Falcons.” -Fan

A few hours later, at important moments during the semi-final play between host nation Morocco and Nigeria at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay-Abdellah yesterday, it appeared as if invincible hands were again at work; this time, to make sure that the hosts should progress at all costs.

Sure, the home support for the Moroccans was overwhelming, but Super Falcons appeared to successfully shut out the deafening noise of Moroccan supporters of the Atlas Lionesses from the stands by standing their ground.

The first half of the encounter ended in a stalemate. In the second stanza of the match, however, VAR seemed to have taken an ugly hold on the encounter, twice reversing the central referee’s yellow cards to Halimatu Ayinde (48th minute) and Rasheedat Ajibade (70th minute) for red cards.

The same VAR starkly ignored an earlier tackle by a Moroccan player that everyone agreed is a red card offence even failing to give the incident a review.

Just as the 48th minute sending off for Ayinde completely swung the momentum of the encounter in favour of the Moroccans from then on, such could have been the fate of the Nigerians had VAR been a wee bit considerate to them.

Senegal and Cameroon book their places in next year’s FIFA women’s world cup playoff

0

Senegal and Cameroon have qualified for the inter-continental play-offs for next year’s FIFA women’s world cup following their hard-fought victories over Tunisia and Botswana at the ongoing women’s Africa cup of nations (WAFCON) taking place in Morocco.

Senegal beat Tunisia 4-2 on penalties on Sunday at the Total Energies women’s Africa cup of nations in Casablanca on Sunday.

Senegal and Tunisia finished their encounter scoreless. In the ensuing spot kicks, while Tunisia’s substitute goalkeeper Nesrine Zizi saved Hapsatou Malado Diallo’s penalty she could not deny Mama Diop, Mbayang Sow, Nguenar Ndiaye and Korka Fall from burying their kicks from the spot in her net.

Sabrine Elouzi and Samia Ouni responded positively for Tunisia from their spot kicks but their efforts fell shot of preventing Senegal’s progress to the playoffs.

Moments later, Cameroon also booked their place at the playoffs following their 1-0 win over hard fighting Botswana through Ajara Njoya’s lone strike.

Senegal and Cameroon must now join eight other countries from other continents in the inter-confederation playoffs scheduled for February next year where two slots for the world cup are up for grabs.

Can Nigeria’s clean sheet queen, Chiamaka Nnadozie, extend her current record at WAFCON?

0

Churning out clean sheets is not a new feat for Nigeria’ women’s national team goalkeeping sensation, Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The expectation is whether Nnadozie can maintain her ongoing clean sheet record when the Super Falcons engage hosts, the Lionesses of Atlas on Monday in their WAFCON semi-final play.

Nnadozie extended her clean sheet record to three games out of three at the ongoing women’s African cup of nations (WAFCON) in Super Falcons’ win against the Indomitable Lionesses.

She was not in goal in Nigeria’s 1-2 loss against South Africa in her team’s opening group game as she served out a one match suspension.

The loss to South Africa’s Bayana Bayana remains the only occasion that the Nigerians have conceded any goal at the ongoing WAFCON tournament in Morocco

Nnadozie currently holds the record as the youngest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at a FIFA women’s world cup tournament.

Just shy of her nineteenth birthday, she was in the post as Nigeria scored a major 2-0 upset against South Korea Republic in their second Group A encounter at the Stade des Alpes in Grenoble, on Wednesday, June 12, at the 2019 women’s world cup in France.

Aged 18 years and 186 days, Nnadozie was then keeping goals for Rivers Angels back home in Nigeria when she pulled off the upset against South Korean.

In her debut in the French D1 Arkema the following year, Nnadozie helped her team, Paris to a 5-0 thrashing of Issy on Saturday, October 10, 2020.

WAFCON 2022 leading goal scorers faceup to decide semi-finals and golden boots winner showdown

Rasheedat Ajibade and Ghizlane Chebbak faceup tomorrow to decide the semi-final joust involving Nigeria and Morocco at the 2022 women’s Africa cup of nations (WAFCON) taking place in Morocco.

Nigeria’s Ajibade and Chebbak, her Moroccan opposition, both have three goals apiece before Monday’s epic showdown in a match that could also decide the Golden Boot winner of this year’s African senior women’s championship.

Zambia will engage South Africa to decide the other semi-final pairing where the winner progresses to the final to meet the victor of the Nigeria versus Morocco encounter.

South Africa’s Jermaine Seoposenwe and Zambia’s Grace Chanda, as well as Chanda’s teammate Avell Chitundu, are their national team’s leading scorers at the championship. The trio have two goals apiece.

Chanda, Seoposenwe, and Chitundu remain in contention for the golden boot winner prize as well. Same goes for Nigeria’s Uchenna Kanu who has also scored two goals so far in the tournament.

Current 2022 WAFCON top scorers:

1. Rasheedat Ajibade (Nigeria), Ghizlane Chebbak (Morocco): 3 Goals.

Bayley – WWE SummerSlam Update

0

According to an exclusive report from PWInsider, Bayley is scheduled to be in Nashville for SummerSlam weekend.

Bayley suffered a torn ACL while training at the WWE Performance Center last July. Initially, the timeline of her return was set at nine months.

One of Bayley’s last televised matches took place on “WWE SmackDown” in June 2021. She was in a mixed tag match with Seth Rollins. The pair had defeated Bianca Belair and Cesaro (now AEW star Claudio Castagnoli).

Bayley isn’t the only WWE Superstar that has been out of action that will be in Nashville for SummerSlam weekend.

As noted, Big E will be making his first public appearance since suffering a major injury on “WWE SmackDown” on March 11. Big E will be working with WWE between July 27-29 in Nashville at a talent tryout for current and graduated college athletes.

WWE Superstar Omos praises AJ Styles for being a ‘great teacher’

0

AJ Styles is regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the world — but according to WWE Superstar Omos, he’s also a great teacher.

On the latest “Out of Character with Ryan Satin,” 7-foot-3 Jordan Omogbehin (better known as Omos) praised Styles for passing on a wealth of knowledge during the year they spent together as a team.

“I could go on about how amazing and wonderful that man is. He has been such a blessing to me, not only in the ring, but out of the ring he has become my big brother,” Omos said of his mentor.

“I can talk to him about anything. We have long talks and, even us being separated now, I actually sit back on everything — because I truly have reverence for him.”

The duo first joined in forces in October 2020 and eventually captured the Raw Tag Team titles at WrestleMania 37 in April of last year. They then held the belts for 133 days until losing them at SummerSlam to RK-Bro.

Unlike other teams, however, this pairing wasn’t strictly for cameras.

AJ Styles took Omos under his wing in real-life by becoming a coach to the main roster rookie. From life on the road, to lessons in the ring, Styles was an open book.

“He knew when to be stern. He knew when to be empathetic. He knew when to back off and just listen and let me talk,” the Nigerian-born Omos explained. “He’s a great teacher.”

Much to the surprise of Omos, their on-screen relationship came to an end in December. Styles moved onto a program with Edge and Omos would eventually become the new protégé of MVP in a program with Bobby Lashley.

Looking back on the split, WWE’s “Colossus” says he had initial reservations about breaking up. Not because he didn’t think he could make it on his own, but because the 27-year-old felt like they had more to give as a team.

“I personally thought there was a lot more we could’ve done, but also understood that it was time for me to go my own way,” admitted Omos. “I thought we could’ve done some really, really cool stuff.”

Thankfully, with a bright future ahead, Omos isn’t dwelling on the past.

“I’m a believer of the moment you stop learning, you stop progressing, so I’m always learning,” he explained. “This business is so nuanced, that I think even the people you think of as the top of the top are always learning, because you always have to keep on learning.”

According to Omos, AJ Styles is a learner too — which explains why their teacher/student relationship worked so well together.

“He can learn from anybody, no matter their experience. He always wants to learn, and learn, and learn. For someone that’s accomplished so much in this business, that is so inspirational and admiring to see.

“He’s truly phenomenal. No pun intended.”

Derek Chisora edges split decision victory over Kubrat Pulev to claim career-boosting win inside the O2 Arena

0

Derek Chisora enacted revenge on Kubrat Pulev by claiming a split decision victory over the man who defeated him six years ago.

The 38-year-old had not won a fight since beating David Price in 2019 and a rematch with Pulev was described as “must win” by Eddie Hearn only minutes before the ring walks.

Pulev had won the first meeting by a split decision but was second best for much of the 12 rounds, with Chisora connecting a number of times with his right to make his 45th professional fight one to remember back in the capital.

It earned Chisora success after the judges scored the bout many predicted would send him into retirement 112-116, 116-112 and 116-114.

The combined age of the duo was 79 but Chisora had faced Oleksandr Usyk in 2020 while Pulev was knocked out by Anthony Joshua at the end of the same year to show their desire to still go toe-to-toe with the best in the business.

It was a welcome return to London for ‘Del Boy’ after bouts with Joseph Parker in Manchester and the former Finchley amateur boasted a strong record of six wins from seven at the O2 Arena.

After he walked out dripping in gold glitter to Elvis Presley’s ‘Always on my mind’ and accepted the acclaim of the home crowd inside the O2 Arena, Chisora set about working on Pulev’s body with several early shots landing during the opening round.

Referee Marcus McDonnell had to warn both about grappling after barely a minute and moved quickly to avoid a big right from the British boxer in the second round.

Pulev, who had only ever lost to Wladimir Klitschko and Joshua, started to earn more success in the third before Chisora was able to connect with his black gloves with a right over the top

The 38-year-old produced his best moment in the sixth when a succession of left jabs caught the Bulgarian in the face and were followed up with a hefty body shot.

McDonnell had warned Pulev about rabbit punching at the end of the same round and buoyed by a near-enough full O2 Arena, Chisora set about ending his losing streak in the seventh.

A right hook left its mark on his fellow veteran, who had blood streaming from his left eye and was only saved by the bell, but the tables quickly turned.

Pulev came out with better intent for the eighth and had Chisora wobbling with a sweetly struck right uppercut.

On the ropes, Chisora came out swinging and with both realizing retirement potentially lay in wait for the loser, a thrilling ninth occurred.

Chisora lived up to his “War” moniker by launching two venomous right punches before a flurry of lefts saw Pulev firmly on the back foot.

Blood was coming from Pulev’s right eye now but the 10th concluded with the older boxer landing a punch after the bell, which saw the Londoner respond in kind.

Tiredness seemed to set in during the penultimate round but Chisora made sure of the 33rd victory of his 15-year professional career with a beautiful straight right early in the final round and a brilliant combination to the body that was enough to earn victory via two of the judges’ scores.
