Tyson Fury plans WWE ringside invasion

0

Morecambe’s world heavyweight champion announced on Instagram he will be ringside for ‘Clash at the Castle’ at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Adam writes for Lancashire post.

The show represents WWE’s first UK stadium show in 30 years and is headlined by Scottish star Drew McIntyre taking on WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

Fury is of course no stranger to wrestling having competed at WWE’s 2019 Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia, defeating fellow giant Braun Strowman by count-out.

It would therefore be no surprise to see the ‘Gypsy King’ get involved in the action, something that hasn’t been ruled out by WWE official Triple H.

“‘I’m going to put cameras on him and see what he does. Which is usually something magic,” ‘The Game’ told BBC 1Xtra.

“Look if it’s physical, it’s going to be because in that moment he decides he wants it to be physical. If it’s not, it’s because in that moment he decides it’s not physical.”

Fury’s Instagram video was shot while out running in Morecambe, as he continues to stay in shape in preparation for a likely super fight with Oleksandr Usyk to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion.
Having been eyed for December, the fight now looks set to take place early in 2023, with Saudi Arabia the front-runner to host the biggest fight in boxing.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that as of now, Rousey isn’t set to appear.

Rousey had previously been used for promotional material, and fans speculated that she would be involved in the match between Morgan and her fellow MMA Horsewoman Shayna Baszler.
WWE Clash at the Castle will take place this Saturday at the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff, Wales.

Manuel Akanji reveals role Erling Haaland played in Man City transfer from Borussia Dortmund

0

Manchester City’s newest signing will be reunited with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland at the Etihad.

Manuel Akanji has detailed a conversation he had with Erling Haaland before he sealed his deadline day switch to Manchester City, Daniel Murphy writes for the Evening News.

Akanji has become the third former Borussia Dortmund player to arrive at City this summer following the signings of Haaland and Sergio Gomez after the Blues moved to snag the centre-back for a cut-price fee. Pep Guardiola is low on options at the back due to injuries to Aymeric Laporte, Nathan Ake and Luke Mbete and the 27-year-old will alleviate that problem after penning a five-year deal.

Akanji knows Haaland well from their time together at Signal Iduna Park and the Swiss have revealed that the free-scoring striker was the first person to text him once the deal came to light.

“He [Haaland] was actually the first one who texted me,” he told City’s in-house media. “It was a couple of days ago he texted me and that’s when I told him I would really like to come here. And also Sergio Gomez, I play with him as well in Dortmund.”

Akanji has plenty of experience coming up against Haaland in training and he explained why the big Norwegian — who already has nine Premier League goals to his name — is so difficult to play against. “He has an amazing combination of skills,” he continued.
“He is fast and physically very strong, but he is also technically skilful. With the combination of both, he is a striker very difficult to stop. The way he uses his body makes him very hard to stop him. He keeps on working on his skills, he is still young and has

Akanji also admitted he never saw Gomez turning into a left-back after coming through at Dortmund as a forward. When asked for his opinion on the Spaniard as a footballer, he replied: “It’s hard to tell for me now because when he was at Dortmund he was a No.10 and now he’s a left-back so I don’t really know how he plays right now. It was a different play style but I want to see how he’s doing, and how he is in training and I’m looking forward to meeting both of them.

“Not really [did he think Gomez would go to left-back] I thought the way he was playing there, No.10, was the perfect position for him but he just didn’t get as many minutes in Dortmund because we had some other really good players there so he needed to make a step somewhere else where he could develop and obviously it helped him a lot otherwise he wouldn’t be here.”

so many years in front of him, but I think he will only get better.”

Serena Williams defies self-announced retirement

0
Serena Williams announced that her imminent retirement from the game that has brought her so much fame and fortune would happen at the US open weeks ahead, setting off wild expectations, Edwin Emeanua writes for Sports Joust.

The general reckoning following her sensational announcement was that the most famous Black women tennis star was just a match-set and point away from leaving the glamorous sports world.

The announcement also heralded a spate of tennis attendance records, among others, being shattered on day one of the US open events.

As the world eagerly awaits the occurrence of this historic exit of one of the game’s most flamboyant and sensational stars, Serena continues to defy the odds.

Yesterday, she upset Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 to postpone yet again the inevitable, by progressing to the third round of the U.S. Open.

Her feat is enhanced by the fact that her opponent on Wednesday is the number two seed of the year’s edition of the event.

It was another defiant show, a classic impression, and a reversion to the diurnal era when she conquered tennis and developed into an international idol.

Yet, her recent feats at this year’s last tennis majors event were never meant to be.

No! No! No! Especially at age 41, and well past her prime, it was least expected, most of all, against the number two, ranked star of the event.

It is apparent that Serena is all out to push imaginations beyond their wildest dreams. As push begins to turn to shove, expect these imaginations to also shove aside self-doubt as self-belief continues to grow.

Maybe, Serena might just hang on to bow out of the game in style, and as a champion of the 2022 version of the US open.

This might be the jaw-dropping news on the very last night of Serena’s sensational tennis career.
What a script that will be. Who would have thought this a possibility?

Vinesh Phogat: India’s quintessential wrestling queen

0

Confirming her World Wrestling Championships spot, 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat defeated her newfound Indian rival in teenager Antim Pangal to maintain her national fiefdom at the WFI trials, Aditya K Halder reports for Firstpost.

Lucknow: One could sense the excitement in the air at the Sports Authority of India facilities here on Monday when three-time Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh Phogat arrived at the venue earlier than most of her juniors for the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) trials for the World Championships.

The 28-year-old decorated athlete arguably had a point to prove against a 17-year-old Antim Pangal, who gave her senior rival a tough time during the CWG trials back in May.

Vinesh had to use all her experience to clinch the bout by the virtue of picking the last point as the contest ended 3-3. Vinesh’s three points came in the last 15 seconds but weren’t convincing enough for the stature of the undisputed queen of the 53kg category.

Monday’s bout, in fact, couldn’t have asked for a better plot set up to the climax as both Vinesh and Antim, who became the first Indian girl to win the U-20 Worlds gold medal, reached the trials scripting histories.

However, all those doubts were laid to rest at the SAI centre on Monday when a seasoned Vinesh put daylight between her and Antim with a dominant 7-0 win.

Functioning as a piece of well-oiled machinery with her movements being too quick for her inexperienced opponent to grab, Vinesh showcased why she is the quintessential queen of Indian wrestling.

“It was a satisfying performance from a personal perspective as I felt I have peaked well this season,” said Vinesh after the bout. “If I compare this performance with the last trials, I was in much better shape today while in May the season was just starting for me and getting challenged by a new opponent left me confused.”

Praising a talent like Antim, Vinesh felt it was her years of experience that proved to be decisive against the teenager.

“Just looking at today’s result, it will be wrong to say she is not good. She’s actually a very strong wrestler and today it was my experience that helped me get better off her,” said Vinesh.

How Vinesh prepped for the bout

However, it would be wrong to assume that it was the 2019 World Championship bronze medallist’s sheer experience and intensity that got her over the line. Taking the bout seriously, Vinesh did all the homework she could on Antim before the bout.

“Vinesh was very aggressive today and that’s because of the criticism she faced after the last trials,” said WFI women’s chief coach Jitendra Singh. “There was further psychological pressure on her after Antim won the U-20 gold medal and that’s why she never took the preparations lightly. Vinesh watched all the videos of Antim’s bouts this year and studied her moves as her homework.”

The star wrestler showed what it means to be an international wrestler as she gave away no freebies during the two trials she competed in.

Speaking of her performance, Vinesh admitted she has peaked well for the season as she never felt tired after bouts.

“I was personally pleased with my performance because I felt I was recovering well after every bout. Never felt that I am getting tired in between or after the bouts. It shows that I have peaked well for the season,” said Vinesh.

‘CWG wasn’t enough, World is the big prize’

Most of the women’s medallists at the CWG, including Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, seemed to be content with their success for the year and gave Monday’s trials a miss. Being scheduled right after the CWG didn’t help the case either but Vinesh was determined about her ambitions for the season.

And for someone, who has been for a long seen as arguably the best women’s wrestler in the country, it’s not hard to guess why she took the risk to participate in Monday’s trials. Just one World Championship medal and alluding Olympic success, can’t be enough for the cousin of the Dangal-famed Phogat sisters.

Vinesh affirmed the same, saying World Championship is the biggest prize of the season.

“Commonwealth Games is important but it was never the biggest prize of the season. And For someone, who has a senior career of 10 years, just one World Championship medal (2019 in Nur Sultan) can’t be satisfying. I have 4-5 years of wrestling left in me and I want to win as many medals at big tournaments as possible in this period so that by the time I leave the sport, I feel satisfied,” said Vinesh.

Chelsea: Fofana in, eye Gvardiol

0
Chelsea are closing in on signing Wesley Fofana and are in ‘advanced talks’ over a deal to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, writes Phil Spencer for talkSPORT.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports the Blues are in discussions over a deal worth in the region of £77million for the RB Leipzig starlet.

However, a move for the 20-year-old would see him go back to Leipzig on loan and officially join the Stamford Bridge outfit in the summer of 2023.

A centre-back by trade, Gvardiol started his career with Dinamo Zagreb before working his way through the club’s youth academy.

After making his professional debut in October 2019, the defender made 52 appearances for the Croatian side before moving to Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

Since then he has made 50 appearances for the German outfit, leading to Chelsea’s interest.

The Premier League giants are determined to strengthen their defensive line, but with Gvardiol unlikely to join until next summer, they’ll be delighted to have progressed in the deal to sign Wesley Fofana.
Romano has also revealed that Chelsea‘s move for the Leicester star is ‘all completed’ after he passed a medical in America.

Romano added it’s expected that he’ll be formally unveiled on Wednesday.

Fofana has got the move he desires but the way the French defender has conducted himself hasn’t sat well with talkSPORT’s Graeme Souness.

“I’d fall out with him,” Souness said after Fofana played no part in Leicester’s defeat to Southampton.

“That’s possibly the wrong thing to do. At the end of the day, Brendan is walking a tightrope.

“People will be looking at him now. They’ve not had a good time, they are sitting near the bottom of the league and that’s the thing he has to deal with.

“He should be focusing on trying to win the next football match.”

Napoli: ‘No loan move for Osimhen’

0
Manchester United have been heavily linked with Napoli star Victor Osimhen this summer, but he reportedly will not be allowed to leave the Serie A side on loan. The Nigerian has kickstarted the new campaign in flying form, scoring two and acting one in three league appearances, Charlie Parker-Turner reports for Express.
The Red Devils’ attack has been the centre of attention for plenty of this summer, with numerous transfer sagas leaving many pondering as to who Erik ten Hag would want to bring in this summer. With Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to leave and many expecting Anthony Martial to be sold, prior to his electric pre-season campaign, it appeared United would need an overhaul in the final third.

And that does not appear to have been ruled out despite the two aforementioned players remaining at Old Trafford. United have recently reached an agreement to sign Antony from Ajax worth £84million, and now signing a striker appears to be being explored with time running out this summer.

According to Jonathan Shrager, Napoli are not ‘willing’ to let Osimhen go to United on a loan deal this summer. The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford – with Arsenal and Chelsea also linked previously. They may still entertain a permanent transfer at the right price, however.

Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti has also revealed that the player is not particularly keen on the move, with United’s lack of Champions League football cited as the reason why. He told DAZN: “Osimhen gave his response, via his agent, saying he wants to play the Champions League and he wants to play it with this squad.

The news of not being able to sign Osimhen on loan could lead to United exploring a permanent transfer for the former Lille star, assuming he could be convinced to sacrifice Champions League football for a season, at least. And their pursuit of the striker could be intensified if Ronaldo is finally granted his wish to leave the club.

The 37-year-old is exploring all his options to find an exit, with his agent Jorge Mendes holding talks with numerous different clubs, including Chelsea and Bayern Munich, to find potential suitors for his client. Ronaldo’s former club Sporting has also been linked with the striker, though a concrete offer is not reportedly on the table from the Portuguese club.

Iwobi stars in feisty Leeds stalemate

0

Chelsea-linked Anthony Gordon opened the scoring as Alex Iwobi helped Everton play out an enthralling draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, Football 365 reports.

Gordon’s smart finish made it 1-0 to the Toffees at the break but they were made to settle for a point as Luis Sinisterra equalised for Leeds.

This result keeps the hosts in fifth while Everton are now out of the bottom three. Frank Lampard’s side are now without a league win in five games, though.

Everton weathered the inevitable early storm without conceding any clear-cut chances.

Leeds’ crisp and accurate build-up play petered out on the edge of Everton’s penalty area and the visitors snatched the lead against the run of play with their first meaningful attack in the 17th minute.

Alex Iwobi picked out Gordon’s darting run with an incisive through-ball, which caught the Leeds defence flat-footed, and the latter raced in to fire a low shot under goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

It was the Everton winger’s second goal in successive matches and credit to the 21-year-old’s temperament amid intense speculation over a possible move to Chelsea.

Jack Harrison’s excellent ball across the face of goal just evaded Rodrigo, who headed Brenden Aaronson’s cross from the opposite wing soon after off target, as Leeds pressed forward again.

Rodrigo, and Leeds, were then dealt a blow in the 30th minute when the Spaniard was withdrawn after appearing to injure his shoulder in a challenge with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Joe Gelhardt replaced Rodrigo despite the return to the bench of Patrick Bamford after a groin injury and Leeds continued to chase an equaliser.

For all Leeds’ pressure, Pickford did not have a save to make before half-time, but the England keeper was forced into action within 60 seconds of the restart.

He turned away Aaronson’s curling goal-bound shot and comfortably held Harrison’s low effort as Leeds swarmed forward.

But Pickford was left helpless in the 57th minute when Leeds drew level.

Gelhardt set Aaronson scampering goal-wards and his pass wide found Sinisterra, who fired a low left-footed shot inside a motionless Pickford’s left-hand post.

Tempers then boiled over, on the pitch and in the dug-outs. Gordon and Kristensen leaned in with their foreheads and the subsequent melee was mirrored on the touchline afterwards had been exchanged between rival coaching staff.

Everton thought they had regained the lead through Demarai Gray’s angled shot, but VAR ruled he had been just offside.

Gelhardt flashed a shot wide at the other end and was denied by Pickford’s boot with another effort before being replaced by Bamford.

Both sides went in search of a winner. Leeds peppered Everton’s penalty area and Nathan Patterson’s late shot was saved by Meslier as the points were shared.

U.S. Open flourish on Luxury Packages

0
The U.S. Open is seeing a surge in demand for high-end experiences as it hosts the end of one of tennis’ most storied careers, reports Owen Poindexter for Front Office Sports.

New “Courtside Premier” ticket packages are becoming a hot item. The program was launched last year by the US Tennis Association and Elevate Sports Ventures, a sports experiences company backed by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Arctos Sports Partners.

  • Ticket packages can top $10,000 for certain matches.

  • In addition to courtside seats, the packages include food, beverages, and the chance to meet retired champions including Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, and Lindsay Davenport.

  • Hotels are charging inflated prices during the tournament.

Kirsten Corio, the USTA’s chief commercial officer, told Bloomberg that packages have been bought by cryptocurrency and luxury goods companies, among others.

The USTA is expecting $50 million in revenue from courtside seats and certain suites and mezzanine seats.

Serena’s Swan Song

Serena Williams has said she will retire from competitive tennis following the U.S. Open and focus on her business endeavours. She won her first match of the tournament in straight sets Monday night.

Her announcement caused a 40% jump in ticket prices on StubHub. Tickets were already hitting prices 60% above last year.

The legend’s VC firm, Serena Ventures, has invested in more than 60 startups, 16 of which are valued above $1 billion. She is also part-owner of the Miami Dolphins and Angel City FC.

She made $35.1 million in the last year, per Forbes, nearly all of which came from off-court earnings.
