Yankees collapse getting so bad

The New York Yankees’ collapse is so noteworthy, that even WWE commentator Michael Cole took a shot at them during the Clash at the Castle event, Scott Rogust writes for Fansided.

In the first half of the 2022 season, the New York Yankees looked like unbeatable World Series contenders. Ever since they returned from the All-Star break, they have entered a downward spiral, and a once mighty lead in the AL East has dwindled down to five games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

 

Things are getting so bad for the Yankees, that they were even receiving shade from the WWE. Specifically, lead commentator Michael Cole at the in Cardiff, Wales on Sept. 3.

 

Malakai Black Wants Out Of AEW, Triple H-WrestleMania 38

If the reports are true, it seems Malakai Black wants out of AEW…and is being denied. And, there were big plans for Triple H and WrestleMania 38.
According to a report, Malakai Black wants out of AEW.
And, according to the same report, Tony Khan declined to grant the star his release.

To be honest, if the report is credible, this could be a really tricky situation. Khan’s decision to decline the release is also concerning.

 

According to PWInsider, Malakai Black wants out of AEW due to unspecified mental health concerns. On top of that, he has concerns about his character and usage.

 

Put it all together, and Black wants out of AEW.

 

An additional report from the Observer provided more insight. There was no confirmation that it was indeed Black who asked out.
Meltzer actually left it open, implying that at least one star, and possibly more, asked out.

There is a lot to unpack there.

 

First, the dynamics within WWE have changed in a big way. Now, Superstars want back in a way that they have not wanted in years.

 

Khan knows this. Seems a bit concerned, actually.

 

So concerned that he’s actually behaving in contradiction to prior comments. He had always said that he would not stand in the way of talent that didn’t want to be in AEW anymore.

 

Now, he is.

 

What is even more concerning? According to Raj Giri (the initial source), Black is so stressed about his health concerns that he’s actually considered an extended time away from the ring.

 

However, it was noted that Tony Khan declined the request for a release.

 

Khan, it would seem, might be concerned about releasing a talent who would then quickly show up on WWE television.

Up to and including walking away for good.

 

Competition is damned, if someone has that kind of issue that he’d give up his career…maybe you need to honour his request for release.

 

Triple H-WrestleMania 38

 

While it ended up never having a chance, there were big plans for triple H at WrestleMania 38, at one point.

 

Triple H had a wide-ranging interview with BT Sports’ Ariel Helwani, and the topic of a WrestleMania 38 match came up.

 

Per the interview, had Hunter’s cardiac issues not popped up, there were big plans for him and a possibly rising young Superstar.

 

I say possibly, because…well…he’s had a lot of hype, but not much else thus far.

 

The match would have had something to do with former NCAA Champion Gable Steveson.

 

Per Hunter, the intent was for him to have worked on something with the Olympic champion, likely putting over the young talent in the process.

Triple H, instead, ended up leaving his boots in the ring, formally retiring from competition.

 

Steveson did miss out on a match but did get into the WrestleMania ring anyways. He was able to toss fellow Olympian Chad Gable around and pop the crowd.

 

WWE Clash At The Castle Cards

Grades Are In!

 

WWE finally returned to England for a PPV with Clash At The Castle. The event is over and here’s how each match scored on our report card, Joe Lisnow reports for Wrestle Newz.
 
Before we get to the main card, WWE tossed in a few names for a six-person tag team match. First off, both teams are kind of an odd couple.
 
The Street Profits were there to get the crowd buzzing and they accomplished their job. Austin Theory was a great source of heat and it reminded fans the MITB briefcase is in England.
As expected, the match was decent and could have been saved for the halfway point of RAW. Montez Ford continues to look like a future singles champion. Grade: B-

SmackDown Women’s Championship: Liv Morgan vs Shayna Baszler

Heading into the match, Shayna Baszler was getting a renewed push because of Triple H. Liv Morgan entered the match with a bad arm and shoulder.
Obviously, Baszler was focusing on the arm as it helps with her MMA background. For the most part, Baszler had the upper hand and that adds up.
Although, give Morgan credit as she continues to improve and shows true passion. Morgan retains as this amazing journey continues. Grade: B

Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss & Asuka vs Bayley, Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky

 

 

Clash Castle Report Card

SummerSlam opened with several shocking returns. Putting Damage Control together was a great idea by WWE.
A fun opening match, featuring singles action and the teams working together. WWE was focused on Bianca Belair, making her seem almost unbeatable.
Unfortunately, that is not what happened with the RAW Women’s Champion. Thanks to teamwork, Bayley pinned the champion and is likely getting a title shot. Grade: B

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre

For two years, nobody could defeat Roman Reigns and he claimed both world titles at the same time. With the event coming from Europe, Drew McIntyre had the best odds of everyone to defeat “The Tribal Chief.”

 

 

Karrion Kross was at ringside, so he was another factor fans needed to watch. The match was about blunt force being thrown by a pair of heavyweights.

 

 

I wish McIntyre won as he deserved a title win in front of fans. Solo Sikoa is now part of the bloodline and is the only reason Reigns is still champion. Grade: B+

Edge & Rey Mysterio vs The Judgement Day

A major question heading into the bout was Dominik Mysterio, who could join The Judgement Day. Still, that would not take away from the actual match.

 

 

Before the match started, I remembered Edge & Rey Mysterio were former tag champions and a great combo. Man, what a massive pop for Edge too.
Awesome teamwork from everyone as they elevated the match. I want a rematch, but Dominik turning on Edge and his own father scrapped those plans. Grade: A-

Intercontinental Championship: Gunther vs Sheamus

We all knew Gunther would be there, but not Imperium. A nice addition made by Triple H to help balance The Brawling Brutes.

Cool opening as Gunther and Sheamus did not take their eyes off each other as everyone battled around the ring. Heading into the match, you knew both were left with bruises.

 

 

Both men certainly needed ice and heat as their bodies looked like a mashed burgers. What a slugfest where Gunther somehow walked-out still champion, but Sheamus felt like the real winner. A-

Matt Riddle vs Seth Rollins

Matt Riddle taking on Seth Rollins is something we thought would happen at SummerSlam. Instead, WWE waited and the feud intensified.

 

 

This was not the normal Riddle, who likes to crack jokes. Riddle was all business at first before Rollins took advantage.
You knew the match should be good, but they made it fantastic. Riddle won with a pair of huge curb stomps, with both men looking like major stars out there. Grade: A-

Magomedov to “Smash” Adesanya with Wrestling

After well over a year since his last fight, and months upon months of waiting, Abus Magomedov finally made his octagon debut at UFC Paris on Saturday, Jay Anderson writes for Cageside.

 

 

He did so in style, winning a Performance of the Night bonus for his front kick knockout of Dustin Stoltzfus in the pair’s middleweight bout.

 

 

“I’m very happy for my debut, that I finally get the chance to fight here. I can’t say, I don’t have words to describe what I feel,” Magomedov (25-4-1) told media outlets including Cageside Press following the fight. “I’m just happy.”

 

 

With time spent in KSW and the PFL, where he went to the million dollar final in 2018, Magomedov is an experienced fighter with a high ceiling in the UFC. No doubt due to this, the idea of fighting champ Israel Adesanya was floated on Saturday.

 

 

 

“I will wrestle him. I will smash him in wrestling, yeah,” Magomedov replied when asked how he would handle the champ. “If he wants to stand up, I can also fight in the stand-up. It’s not [something] I’m afraid of, a stand-up fight. But you have to be smart and know how to smash this guy.”

 

 

Ahead of his long-awaited debut, Magomedov did admit that despite his big-fight experience, there were nerves to contend with.

 

 

“Of course. This is why I work all my life, for UFC. Everybody knows UFC is the biggest organization of the world. For me, personally, it’s like Olympics. There is nothing more. I know everybody around the world look at UFC. It was a little bit [of] pressure, of course. But I’m a long time in this business, and I know how to manage it.”

 

 

As for his return, Abus Magomedov is hoping to fight on the UFC 280 card in Abu Dhabi, which is roughly six weeks from now.

 

 

“I hope the UFC will call me and say ‘hey Abus, let’s go, Abu Dhabi,’” he stated. “I’m ready.”

Southgate to watch Abraham and Smalling

Smalling and Abraham each have a goal to their name this far into the season’s campaign.

 

 

Bets are off the table that ‘The Special One’ will shuffle his line-up ahead of the impending Europa League group stage encounter against Ludogorets on Thursday.

 

 

Abraham was signed into the Giallorossi brand last summer and is the most productive rookie in Roma’s history with 27 goals in 52 games in all appearances.

The Roma attacker was handed his senior England debut by Southgate in 2017, scoring three times in 11 games for ‘The Three Lions’.
Abraham’s last goal for England’s senior national team for men came in a Nations League encounter versus Italy’s ‘The Azzurris’ in June.

 

 

Smalling, played his 31st and last game for the Three Lions in 2017.

According to Gazzetta, Abraham is the focus for Southgate’s visit to Dacia Arena, but could also glance over his compatriot who has had an outstanding beginning to the season with Roma.

Osimhen torments Lazio as Anguissa Assists

Napoli’s duo of African stars gave the Metropolitan team’s frenetic supporters a full dose for their money, by tormenting and assisting in a 2-1 away win over Lazio, yesterday, writes Edwin Emeanua for Sports Joust.

 

 

Napoli came form a goal down at the Stadio Olimpico after only four minutes into the fray to hand Lazio a famous home defeat.

 

 

Mattia Zaccagni broke the deadlock aided by a Felipe Anderson assist at the fourth minute mark of the tie.

 

 

However, Zaccagni effort gingered reactions from two of Luciano Spalletti’s newest additions in his lineup-Kim Min-jae (first half) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (second half).

 

 

Kvaratskhelia’s first half effort was thwarted by the woodwork before technology affirmed Kim Min-jae’s header scuttling across the line from a corner kick in the 38th minute.

 

 

Kvaratskhelia missed a clear sitter, but replied with a scorching propellant, from just inside the box in the 61st minute from a Zambo Anguissa assist, to win the game for the visitors.

 

 

Victor Osimhen’s tormenting header rocketed off the woodwork saving Lazio a significant additional goals deficit. Both goalkeepers were kept on their toes with saves on Osimhen and Felipe Anderson.

 

 

Lazio came close to levelling the scores before time with a Pedro Ledesma’s effort, but it was not to be. With the win, Napoli has garnered 11 points to temporarily sit atop of Serie A in tandem with Milan, while awaiting Roma and Atalanta to play their outstanding ties.

Serena Williams ends legendary career

Serena Williams has bid farewell to tennis after defeating to Ajla Tomljanovic at the US Open, although she has left the door ajar to pick up the racket again in future.

 

The 40-year-old was in tears after a 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 defeat to the Australian, which looks likely to be the final contest of her absolutely incredible 27-year pro career.

 

The American has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 more in the doubles with sister Venus, as she goes down as not only one of the greatest to ever play tennis but one of the finest sportspeople ever to perform.

 

On Friday night at Flushing Meadows, she was keen to thank people who had helped her reach this point, including the lucky few who saw her final match in person.

I thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side for so many years, decades. Oh my gosh, literally decades,’ said Williams.

 

‘But it all started with my parents. And they deserve everything. So I’m really grateful to them. And I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you, Venus. She’s the only reason that Serena Williams ever existed.

 

‘It’s been a fun ride, it’s been the most incredible ride and the journey I’ve ever had in my life. And I’m just so grateful to every single person that’s ever said “go Serena” in life. I’m just so grateful because it got me here.’

 

Serena fans who are sad that this is the last time they will see her on the court may be boosted by something of a tease from the GOAT.

 

Asked whether this was indeed the end, she said: ‘I think so, you never know.’

 

However, she also spoke of what she now plans to do with tennis behind her, adding: ‘I’m ready to be a mom and explore a different version of Serena.’

 

‘And technically in the world, I’m still super young so I want to have a little bit of a life while I’m still walking.’

Premier League wrap: Chelsea, et al

Chelsea beat West Ham United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge as goals from substitutes Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz cancelled out Michail Antonio’s opener – but they also had the VAR referee to thank after an apparent Hammers equaliser was ruled out, reports RTE News.

 

The Blues, looking to improve on their stuttering start to the Premier League season, was rocked in the 63rd minute when they failed to clear a corner and Declan Rice squared the ball for Antonio to convert on the goal line.

 

Thirteen minutes later the hosts were level when Chilwell squeezed between two defenders to get his head on a long forward pass by Thiago Silva and deftly angled the ball between the legs of West Ham goal-keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

 

Havertz completed the comeback in the 88th minute when he connected with a cross by Chilwell to make it 2-1, moments after West Ham substitute Maxwell Cornet had headed against the post when he should have scored.

 

In the dying moments, Cornet thought he had levelled it for West Ham but his goal was ruled out after a VAR check ruled that Jarrod Bowen had fouled Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

 

 

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their impressive start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Fulham that did not do justice to their best-attacking display so far.

 

Goals in each half by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane earned Tottenham a fourth win in six games but in-form Aleksandar Mitrovic’s effort set up a nervy finale.

 

For the first time, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte unleashed Richarlison from the start to form an attacking trident with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min and it proved an exciting formula.

 

But after almost constant Tottenham pressure it was midfielder Hojbjerg who finally earned Tottenham the lead they deserved with a neat 40th-minute finish.

 

Kane made it 2-0 in the 75th minute and the superb Richarlison was denied by the woodwork and had a goal disallowed for offside as he did everything but open his account.

 

Mitrovic struck a superb reply in the 86th for his sixth league goal of the season but Tottenham sealed the win that put them on 14 points from six matches. Fulham has eight points.

 

 

Newcastle United had a second-half goal ruled out after a VAR review as they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in a game that was full of chances but somehow yielded no goals.

 

After netting against Liverpool in midweek following his arrival from Real Sociedad for a reputed £59m, record signing Alexander Isak came close to scoring in the first half, robbing Joachim Andersen to create a one-on-one but failing to get his chip over Palace keeper Vicente Guaita.

 

Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron went even closer, firing through a thicket of bodies and hitting the base of the post to send his side into the break somehow still level, despite a slew of chances.

 

The home side thought they had taken the lead six minutes into the second half thanks to an own goal from Trick Mitchell, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review found that Joe Willock had fouled Guaita.

 

Palace created plenty of opportunities of their own but many of them were fired straight at Newcastle keeper Nick Pope, who had little trouble dealing with them.

 

Despite the two sides racking up 38 shots between them, the game finished scoreless to leave Newcastle in 11th position in the table on seven points, with Palace 15th on six points.

 

 

Jaidon Anthony came off the bench to hand Bournemouth a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest as they bounced back from two goals down in a thrilling clash of the promoted sides.

 

Cheikhou Kouyate and Brennan Johnson gave Forest a 2-0 lead at half time but Bournemouth produced a terrific performance in the second half, rallying through goals from Philip Billing, Dominic Solanke and Anthony.

 

With the score 2-2, Anthony scored the winning goal in the 87th minute as he coolly side-footed a finish past Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson following a pass from Solanke.

 

Earlier, Senegal midfielder Kouyate put Forest in the lead in the 33rd minute as he rose highest in the box to power home a header from Morgan Gibbs-White’s corner kick.

 

Forest doubled their lead before the break when forward Johnson scored an ice-cool penalty, following a lengthy VAR review after a handball incident by Bournemouth skipper Lloyd Kelly.

 

Bournemouth responded quickly in the second half, with central midfielder Billing finding the target in the 51st minute with a stunning strike from around 30 yards out.

 

Forest wasted a chance to add a third goal and it proved costly as striker Solanke made it 2-2 for Bournemouth in the 63rd minute, pulling off a superb acrobatic effort which flew into the net via a slight deflection off Scott McKenna.

 

 

Ivan Toney struck a sensational hat-trick to earn Brentford a thrilling 5-2 home win over Leeds United.

 

Toney sent Illan Meslier the wrong way from the penalty spot to open the scoring in the 30th minute after being fouled by Luis Sinisterra and doubled Brentford’s lead with a sublime freekick from just outside the box in the 43rd.

 

He completed his sixth career hat-trick in stunning style in the 58th minute, rounding Meslier and floating the ball over two defenders and into an empty net from distance after the Leeds keeper was forced to charge out to clear his lines.

 

Sinisterra pulled a goal back for Leeds just before halftime with a fine bit of skill, but Leeds then lost their manager Jesse Marsch to a red card for arguing with the officials shortly after Toney’s third goal.

 

Marc Roca scored a second for the visitors in the 79th, but it was Brentford who had the last word when Bryan Mbeumo slotted home a minute later to restore the two-goal cushion before Yoane Wissa added the home side’s fifth in injury time.

 

The win moved Brentford up four places to seventh in the table, while Leeds dropped to ninth.

 

 

A Daniel Podence goal on the stroke of half-time gave Wolverhampton Wanderers a 1-0 win over Southampton, their first victory of the season.

 

Matheus Nunes broke down the right and picked Podence out with a low ball to the back post although Saints keeper Gavin Bazunu should have done better to keep out the low drive.

 

After the break, Che Adams had the ball in the net for Southampton but it was ruled out for handball on what was a frustrating day for the forward.

 

Adams had a Stuart Armstrong cross against the bar as Wolves held on for a win that moves them up to 14th on six points.

 

Southampton fell to 12th place with seven points from their opening six games.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford ‘wow’ Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Jordan Pickford after the Everton goalkeeper denied Liverpool and earned the Toffees a point in the Merseyside derby, Louis Sealey writes for Metro 50 News.

Pickford made a string of saves – denying Darwin Nunez, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah – to frustrate Liverpool in an eventful but goalless derby at Goodison Park.

 

Everton midfielder Tom Davies and Liverpool striker Nunez both hit the woodwork in the first half and Luis Diaz suffered the same fate after the break, while Pickford also tipped a strike from Salah onto the post in the dying seconds.

 

Former Liverpool defender Conor Coady thought he had scored a second-half winner when he turned home Neal Maupay’s effort but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.

The goalless draw means Liverpool have now dropped nine points this season and remain six behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, who play their game in hand tomorrow.

 

Everton, meanwhile, stay amid the relegation places but will be buoyed by their performance against arch-rivals Liverpool.

 

Reds boss Klopp said: ‘It was a real derby, super intense and full of really spectacular moments.

‘I think we hit the post three times and there were a few unbelievable saves from Pickford – wow, what can you do?

 

‘In this game, easy and free-flowing is not possible. You have to dig deep, that’s what we did. A 0-0 draw sounds strange, but that’s it.

 

‘It was a super intense week for us. We had a really tough game that went to the wire [against Newcastle on Wednesday], then a few days later you play here.

 

‘If you open up with a goal, the situation can look different. I don’t know how many derbies I’ve had now – quite a few – but it’s always difficult here.’

Everton manager Frank Lampard was also full of praise for Pickford after the Merseyside derby and said: ‘I thought we were brilliant. It’s one of the best 0-0s you’re likely to see.

 

‘Pickford made some great saves, you need your keeper to be on it in games like this. He got his fingertips on a few bits today which a lot of keepers don’t get and Allison the same, two top-class keepers.

 

‘I’ve relied on Jordan a lot he’s a fantastic keeper and we’re fortunate to have a player of this level.

 

‘It was a real game of two teams going for it. I can’t fault the players and the spirit. We played well, we’re getting better.

‘We’re trying to build up. You have to get personnel and work on the training ground. It feels like those wins will come.

While Liverpool’s frustrating start to the season continued at Goodison Park, Virgil van Dijk attempted to take the positives from the derby stalemate.

 

‘Obviously they had a couple of opportunities and an offside goal,’ he said. ‘They had two good saves from Alisson, I think we had a little more [chances] than that.

‘We should have won in my opinion. It feels like we lost two points. We wanted to stay calm. They wanted to be aggressive, feed the crowd.

‘We had to keep our cool and play quickly from side to side, because the spaces were so massive between the lines. Sometimes we did that, sometimes we didn’t and created unnecessary problems.

 

‘We changed system a little bit [at half-time] but it’s still the same principles. At times it went well, but at times we could have done better.

 

‘It feels like we lost points here, but it’s still early in the season. We have to stick together, focus on winning games and take it step by step. A clean sheet also wasn’t a bad thing at this stage.’

Alex Iwobi continues to Shine

Alex Iwobi and Jordan Pickford were outstanding for Everton as they shared spoils with Liverpool in their dreaded Merseyside derby today at Goodison Park, Edwin Emeanua writes for Sports Joust.
The Nigeria international midfielder continues to blossom under Frank Lampard’s limitless opportunities which have seen the former Everton cast-away become the cornerstone for the team’s relentless relegation survival push this season.
In a pulsating scoreless encounter against Liverpool, last season’s runners-up, whenever Everton was in peril to concede, Iwobi was there huffing to stave off the sporadic tempestuous moments for his struggling side.
Then, when the seesaw moves to the opposing end, or whenever Everton seems to be pushing for the upper hand, Iwobi is somehow also there puffing to make that happen for his team.
Pickford on his part, stood tallest between the sticks for Everton against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool attackers in commanding goalkeeping fashion like a Trojan horse.
At the end of the pulsating and highly entertaining derby, Lampard hailed the ‘incredible’ performance of his goalkeeper.

“An amazing game – very intense, good quality, lots of chances for both teams and incredible performances from both goalkeepers,” Lampard told BBC’s Match of the Day.

 

“It’s my first experience of a derby day at Goodison and the atmosphere was brilliant and the spirit and work of our players. Liverpool is a great team and we are at the beginning of the process, we’re working hard, with spirit, hard work and quality and we’re playing better, we will get better.
“We wanted to be more aggressive in our approach off the ball, we didn’t want to succumb to their pressure and I thought we did that well but they will always pin you back at times. But we stuck to the game plan, the desire to stay in the game and create our own chances. I’m happy with a point because of the events they had but I’m very happy with the team and how we’re going.
“Jordan [Pickford] gets fingertips on a few bits today which a lot of keepers don’t get and Allison the same, two top-class keepers. I’ve relied on Jordan a lot he’s a fantastic keeper and we’re fortunate to have a player of this level.
