Potter, Klopp, Guardiola, Ten Hag

Graham Potter now joins the ranks of Premier League top-earning coaches becoming the League’s fourth highest-paid head coach following his landing of a huge deal from Chelsea, Edwin Emeanua writes for Sports Joust.
According to GIVEMESPORT, Chelsea appointed the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager as head coach yesterday.
Potter now replaces Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by Chelsea following Chelsea’s Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.

How much is Potter earning at Chelsea?

Chelsea has handed Potter a huge contract reportedly worth about £60m.
He has signed a five-year contract worth £ 12m a year according to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph.

What has Chelsea’s owner, Todd Boehly, said about Potter?

Boehly was ecstatic after Potter’s move from Brighton to Chelsea was confirmed.

“We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea. He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the Club,” he told Chelsea’s official website.

“Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, but he also has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful Club.

“He has had a major impact at his previous Clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea. We look forward to supporting him, his coaching team and the squad in realizing their full potential in the coming months and years.”

Chelsea slump to shocking Zagreb Defeat

Football London single out Mason Mount for blame
Let the blame game begin and Mason Mount should take this one for the defeat in Zagreb. That is the chilling verdict of Football England which has singled out Mount for major blame for The Blue’s stunning 1-0 loss away to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League yesterday, Edwin Emeanua writes for Sports Joust.

To further show their disgust, the group also awarded a shocking 4/10 for Mount’s poor effort in the Zagreb fiasco.

Mislav Orsic spearheaded an early counter-play goal that turned out to be the only screw needed by the hosts to latch in their famous defeat for Chelsea.

The defeat is a befitting reward for a Chelsea side that left little to be desired other than a paper-tiger rating prior to their disgrace in Zagreb.

The Blues were so bad on a fateful evening that calling them to piss poor would be an insult to the concept of piss-poor. Team Chelsea that travelled to Croatia was nonexistent in Zagreb, that too is another understatement about how Chelsea was in Zagreb.

Paris, Man City, Real Madrid win

Mbappé and Haaland set new records

Paris, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Dortmund, Benfica and Shakhtar all recorded opening-night UEFA Champions League wins, while Dinamo Zagreb stunned Chelsea in Croatia, UEFA.com rounds up all the action from the opening set of group stage fixtures in 2022/23.

Group E

Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 Chelsea

Mislav Oršić was the match-winner as Dinamo stunned Chelsea. It was the Blues’ first ever game against a Croatian side and it proved one to forget as Oršić skipped clear to score the only goal early on. The home side almost doubled their lead but Kepa pushed Stefan Ristovski’s shot onto the bar. Chelsea finished strongly, Reece James hitting the post, but it was not to be for the 2021 winners.

Key stat: Oršić has scored five goals in seven appearances against the English opposition.

14/09: AC Milan vs Dinamo, Chelsea vs Salzburg

Salzburg 1-1 AC Milan

Two fine goals meant the points were shared in an entertaining encounter. The game started at pace, and the home side took the lead through Noah Okafor, who skipped past Fikayo Tomori and fired under Mike Maignan. Milan levelled when Alexis Saelemaekers finished a fine team move. The second half lacked the verve of the first, but Fernando blazed over for Salzburg and Milan almost won it when Rafael Leão’s deflected effort hit the post in added time.

Key stat: Milan has lost only one of their 15 Matchday 1 fixtures, while Salzburg is unbeaten in their five.

14/09: AC Milan vs Dinamo, Chelsea vs Salzburg

Group F

Celtic 0-3 Real Madrid

The holders began their defence with a strong second-half showing in Glasgow. Celtic came closest to opening the scoring before the break when Callum McGregor’s fierce drive struck the post, but Los Blancos regrouped and two goals in the space of five minutes through Vinícius Júnior and Luka Modrić turned the tide. Eden Hazard, a first-half substitute for Karim Benzema, added a third with a close-range finish following a neat move.

Key stat: Modrić (36 years and 362 days) is the oldest player to score for Real Madrid in the European Cup since 38-year-old Ferenc Puskás in September 1965.

14/09: Shakhtar vs Celtic, Real Madrid vs Leipzig
Leipzig 1-4 Shakhtar

Shakhtar began their campaign with a win after a fine performance in Germany. After containing early pressure, they went ahead when Marian Shved capitalized on Péter Gulácsi’s mistake to roll into an empty net from distance. The hosts drew level through Mohamed Simakan’s rising finish, yet Shved stuck again almost immediately to restore the lead before a classy third on the break from Mykhaylo Mudryk. Lassina Traoré added late gloss.

Key stat: Shakhtar’s win is just their second in 11 attempts against German clubs in the Champions League and ends their run of seven games without a win in the competition.

14/09: Shakhtar vs Celtic, Real Madrid vs Leipzig

Group G

Sevilla 0-4 Man City

Haaland continued his charmed start to life at City as he scored twice in an impressive victory in Spain. Haaland took his tally to nine goals in his last five games midway through the first half, tapping in from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross, and after Phil Foden made it 2-0 before the hour the Norwegian struck again. Rúben Dias sealed the biggest win of the night in added time.

Key stat: Haaland has taken just 20 appearances to score 25 Champions League goals, eclipsing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s previous record of 30 games. The Norwegian is also the youngest to reach the landmark – surpassing Mbappé by 33 days.

14/09: Man City vs Dortmund, Copenhagen vs Sevilla
Dortmund 3-0 Copenhagen

Two goals towards the end of the first half from Marco Reus and Raphaël Guerreiro set the dominant German side on course for a comfortable win. Jude Bellingham’s late strike afforded the scoreline a truer reflection of the one-way traffic for much of the sun-drenched early evening, with Copenhagen’s disappointment with a first ever Matchday 1 defeat compounded when Rasmus Falk’s late effort was chalked off for offside.

Key stat: Goalkeeper Alexander Meyer marked his first Dortmund appearance with a clean sheet. The 31-year-old, one of two thirty-somethings making their Champions League debuts in the German side’s line-up, has never played a top-flight game.

14/09: Man City vs Dortmund, Copenhagen vs Sevilla

Group H

Paris 2-1 Juventus

Mbappé scored twice in the opening 22 minutes to set Paris on course for victory. The France striker volleyed Neymar’s deft chip beyond Mattia Perrin and added a second with a first-time clinical strike to complete a dazzling passage of passing. Substitute Weston McKennie headed a 53rd-minute reply and Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Juventus an equaliser by clawing away Dušan Vlahović’s header.

Key stat: At 23 years and 260 days, Mbappé is the youngest player to reach 35 Champions League goals. He surpasses Lionel Messi by 47 days; Cristiano Ronaldo was 27 years and 59 days.

14/09: Juventus vs Benfica, Maccabi Haifa vs Paris
Benfica 2-0 Maccabi Haifa

Two goals in five second-half minutes were enough to take Benfica past Maccabi Haifa in Lisbon. The hosts dominated the first half but it was not until five minutes into the second that dangerman Rafa Silva tucked in a close-range volley from Grimaldo’s cross. Five minutes later Grimaldo turned goalscorer, unleashing a fizzing drive which flew past Josh Cohen and in via the underside of the crossbar.

Key stat: This was Benfica’s first Matchday 1 win in the UEFA Champions League group stage in their last six attempts.

Strowman returned to the WWE more than a year after being released

Dexter Lumis traps The Miz inside a steel cage

Braun Strowman is back. The behemoth picked up right where he left off in 2021 by carving a path of destruction through WWE Raw on Monday night, writes Shakiel Mahjouri for CBS.

Strowman returned to the company after 14 months away from the WWE bubble. The former universal champion disposed of eight WWE superstars and promised to lay more waste on SmackDown.

Elsewhere on the program, The Miz attempted to find refuge from Dexter Lumis inside a steel cage, but instead found himself trapped with his worst nightmares on Monday night. A U.S. championship match between Bobby Lashley and The Miz headlined the show.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City, Missouri

Braun Strowman strikes with brute force, Dexter Lumis executes with meticulous planning

A fatal four-way tag team match took place to determine the No. 1 contenders for The Usos undisputed tag team championships. American Alpha, Los Lotharios, New Day and Street Profits competed admirably but none of them emerged victorious. Strowman made his WWE return by clearing the field and flattening most of the superstars before driving Angelo Dawkins through a table.

Later in the evening, a cameraman approached Strowman for comment. “The Monster Among Men” celebrated his return, assured that no one was safe and announced that he would appear on Friday Night SmackDown this week. It was Strowman’s first WWE appearance since being released on June 2, 2021, as part of reported budget cuts.

The Miz and Ciampa arrived at Raw early in the program. Miz refused to address his kidnapping by Lumis when questioned by an interviewer. The villainous duo investigated a mysteriously upturned car before moving on.

Later in the evening, the pair were again approached for an interview. The Miz was short about Lumis, but the interviewer insisted that Bobby Lashley was the subject of the story. Miz promised to dethrone Lashley for the U.S. title in Monday’s main event.

U.S. championship — Bobby Lashley (c) def. The Miz via pinfall to retain the title. Miz blindsided Lashley before the match started and took advantage during the early portions of the match. The challenger’s attempts to escape the cage gave Lashley the opening he needed to take over. Lashley repeatedly tossed his foe across the ring, punishing him with power movers and hunting for a pinfall. The Miz repeatedly nailed Lashley with signature moves — such as a running knee and the Skull crushing Finale — that elicited near falls. Lashley was footsteps away from victory but was intercepted by Ciampa when attempting to exit the cage door. The Miz repeatedly smashed Lashley’s head against the cage door before scaling the side of the cage to escape. Mid-escape, The Miz spotted Lumis’ top half sticking out from under the ring. Miz fled back inside of the cage. Lashley took advantage of the moment and blindsided his opponent with a spear to score the pinfall and retain his title.

Post-match, Lashley trapped Miz in the cage with Lumis. The stalker choked his victim unconscious and stroked his head to close out the show.

The scars of years of uneven and unfinished storytelling will take time to heal. Until then, I will continue to applaud consistent, multi-layered storytelling. The restraint to slowly unravel the mystery of Dexter Lumis is refreshing and exciting, even if the premise is hokey. The main event’s in-ring action was fine. The real highlight is how The Miz’s attempts to evade Lumis ultimately trapped him in a prison with the unhinged predator. Strowman’s return was also refreshing news. WWE heavily invested in their Strowman pet project and it was disheartening to see him released last year. Strowman is supremely athletic for a man his size and a believable threat at all times. Grade: B
