Britt Baker Appears To Take Shots At Debuting WWE Act On AEW Rampage

0
Earlier this week, AEW announced that at All Out, Thunder Rosa would defend her AEW Women’s World Championship against her ThunderStorm tag team partner, Toni Storm. One AEW talent, however, didn’t exactly support this announcement, and on last night’s “AEW Rampage,” Dr. Britt Baker, DMD, let her distaste be known — while also taking a not-so-subtle dig at the competition, Tyler Miller writes for Wrestling INC.
“If we are not at the pay-per-view title match, there’s nothing more I rather do than sit back and watch the s*** unfold that is ThunderStorm,” Baker said, referring to herself and her companions, Jamie Hayter and Rebel.  “I can’t think of a more toxic tag team in all of professional wrestling.” Hayter followed up by saying that their own group was definitely not toxic.

This was almost certainly a reference to Gigi Dolin and Jacey Jane of Toxic Attraction, who made their main roster debut on “WWE SmackDown” mere hours before Baker’s segment was aired. Serving as a last-minute replacement for Zoey Stark and Nikkita Lyons, the former “NXT” Tag Team Champions took on — and defeated — Natalya and Sonya Deville to advance to round two of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament. While Dolin and Jayne appear to have made the jump to the main roster, Toxic Attraction’s leader, Mandy Rose, is still running “NXT 2.0” as the reigning “NXT” Women’s Champion.

Baker lost the AEW Women’s World title to Rosa earlier this year and has been chasing it ever since alongside Hayter and Storm, with Storm coming up short at AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door and Hayter losing her shot at Battle of the Belts III on “AEW Dynamite.”

Independent Wrestling Star Arrests Ronda Rousey On WWE SmackDown

0
Ronda Rousey was once again arrested on WWE television this past Friday. The former UFC Champion has refused to pay a fine recently levied against her and Rousey attempted to hijack “WWE Smackdown” this past Friday. General Manager Adam Pearce sent security after the former WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, but Rousey made quick work of the gang of officials, leading to Pearce sending two “officers” to arrest Rousey, writes Ross W Berman IV for Wrestling INC.
Former wrestling promoter Dave Boyce pointed out on Twitter that one of the “officers” arresting Rousey — Officer Davis — was none other than Canadian independent wrestler KC Spinelli. A 13-year veteran of the independent wrestling scene, Spinelli is the current Acclaim Pro Wrestling champion and has made numerous appearances on Impact Wrestling. She’s also wrestled for the former SHIMMER and Global Force Wrestling promotions. Spinelli was also featured on the 2011 Canadian “World of Hurt” television series under wrestling trainers such as former ECW Television Champion Lance Storm and WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper.

Wrestling Inc. has not been able to confirm the identity of the male “officer” — whose uniform nameplate read “Sawyer” — involved in the on-screen arrest.

Igwebuike’s late TD, 2-point stop lead Lions past Indy 27-26

0

Godwin Igwebuike’s 2-yard scoring run gave the Detroit Lions a late lead and the defence stopped a 2-point conversion attempt in the final minute Saturday to hold on for a 27-26 victory in a preseason game at Indianapolis, Michael Marot writes for AP News.

Igwebuike’s tiebreaking score came with 4:03 to play. He had seven carries for 32 yards as the Lions earned their first preseason win.

But most of the attention was focused on quarterbacks David Blough and Tim Boyle.

Lions coach Dan Campbell and Colts coach Frank Reich did not play most of their starters following two joint practices between the teams earlier this week.

Blough got the starting nod one week after his late turnover cost the Lions a win and rebounded nicely. He threw a 5-yard TD pass to tie the score at 13 as time expired in the first half and finished 16 of 22 with 76 yards and one interception while rushing three times for 18 yards.

But Sam Ehlinger connected with a wide-open Dezmon Patmon, who rolled over and stretched the ball across the goal line for a 50-yard score to make it 20-20.

Rookie Jack Coan gave the Colts a chance to win it in the waning minutes when he connected with Samson Nacua on a 26-yard score with 38 seconds left but Coan’s 2-point conversion fell incomplete in the end zone.

STAT PACK

Lions: Boyle was 12 of 15 with 99 yards and one TD. … Tom Kennedy had five receptions for 24 yards and two scores. … Craig Reynolds started at running back and had seven carries for 37 yards including back-to-back 11-yard runs in the first half. … Maurice Alexander had successive kickoff returns of 61 and 45 yards.

Colts: Nick Foles started in place of Matt Ryan and was 5 of 6 with 56 yards in one quarter. … Patmon had five receptions for 103 yards. … Michael Strachan had three catches, 45 yards and one TD in his first preseason action. … Indy allowed 99 of the Lions’ 174 yards rushing in the first half and ran 18 times for 30 yards.

INJURY REPORT

Lions: Devin Funchess did not play after suffering a stinger in his right shoulder during practice this week and defensive lineman Eric Banks limped off the field with what appeared to be a right leg injury.
Colts: Linebacker Brandon King left the game in the first half with a hamstring injury and did not return. Defensive end Kameron Cline left late with a concussion.

Saturday’s motors roundup: Chase Elliott wins Cup pole at Watkins Glen International

0
Chase Elliott won the NASCAR Cup pole on Saturday at Watkins Glen International, edging Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson for the top spot, writes Daren Tomhave for the Detroit News.

Elliott, a two-time winner at The Glen, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 10.477 seconds around the 2.45-mile natural terrain road course. Larson, who won last year’s race at The Glen, finished in 1:10.516, just ahead of Michael McDowell.

“I’m really proud of our team,” Elliott said. “We’ll try to give them a good run tomorrow.”

William Byron was fourth and Tyler Reddick, winner of the past two road races on the Cup schedule, will start fifth as Chevrolet took four of the top five spots.

AJ Allmendinger was sixth, followed by Chris Buescher, Austin Cindric, Daniel Suárez and Kyle Busch.

Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr., battling for the final playoff spot with just two races left in the regular season, will start side-by-side in Row 13.

“Definitely not the day we wanted, for sure,” Truex said. “We’ll just keep working on it, battle and fight through it and get all we can like we always do.”

Former Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen, who came out of retirement for the chance to enter NASCAR’S top series, qualified 27th in his Cup debut. Raikkonen is driving for TrackHouse Racing and its Project91 program designed to raise NASCAR’s international exposure.

“I wish there were more laps to put everything together,” Raikkonen said. “I thought I was pretty OK. It’s good.”

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell blew the engine during practice in the No. 20 Toyota and will start at the back of the 39-car field.

United for Eric Bailly loan move

0
Manchester United defender Eric Bailly is close to completing a loan move to Marseille, with an agreement between the clubs reached Phil Haigh writes for Metro 50.

The Premier League and Ligue 1 sides have settled on a loan with an option to buy for the 28-year-old, with personal terms still to be agreed upon, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

That is not expected to be much of a stumbling block, though, with the Ivorian keen to seek out first-team football elsewhere after being frozen out at Old Trafford.

The centre-back made just four Premier League appearances last season and has not been involved yet this season.

New United manager Erik ten Hag has brought in Lisandro Martinez at centre-back and Bailly is now behind the Argentinian, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order in his favoured position.

Bailly has been at Manchester United for six years now, signing from Villarreal in 2016 for £30m, but he has only made 70 Premier League appearances since then, often struggling to stay fit and maintain a spot in the first team.

His contract at Old Trafford runs until 2024, with the club holding an option for a further year, but it may well be that he has already played his last game for the Red Devils.

Bailly is not the only centre-back at Old Trafford who looks to have little chance of making it into the first team.

Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe also remain at the club despite links to moves away, with the latter linked to teams in Turkey, Italy and the Premier League but nothing coming of it yet.

UFC 278 card: Usman vs Edwards and all fights tonight

0

All you need to know about the main card and prelims

Leon Edwards will seek to avenge a loss to Kamaru Usman when the pair clash in the main event of UFC 278 this weekend, as the Briton also attempts to become Britain’s second ever UFC champion, writes Alex Pattle, combat sports correspondence for the Independent.
Usman (20-1) earned a decision victory over Edwards (19-3, 1 No Contest) in 2015 as part of an ongoing 19-fight win streak, which led the Nigerian-American to the welterweight title in 2019.
Usman, 35, has since retained the title in five straight bouts, with two wins against Colby Covington, two against Jorge Masvidal, and one against Gilbert Burns. As such, the “Nigerian Nightmare” has declared that he is “lapping” the opposition, a point that he would drive home with a second victory over Edwards.

Usman – 2/7

Edwards – 13/5

The big event: Anthony Joshua to clash with Oleksandr Usyk tonight

0

George Glinkski of EXPRESS SPORT gives you everything you need to know about Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk II, including the time the main event is underway.

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk are set to square off for a second time on August 20 at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In their last outing, Usyk comfortably outpointed ‘AJ’ at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London to claim the WBA (super), IBF, and WBO titles.

Now, Joshua will get a chance to rewrite the wrong with the added incentive of the lineal heavyweight title. Tyson Fury vacated the Ring Magazine strap following his re-retirement last week and it has now been added to the prize pool for this weekend’s blockbuster showdown.

The final missing piece – the WBC heavyweight title – is still in ‘The Gypsy King’s hands although Fury has been given until August 26 to decide whether he wishes to vacate.

What time will the fight start?

The main event is expected to start at 10.30 pm UK time. The main card will begin at 5 pm UK time while the rest of the undercard will take place much earlier in the afternoon.

The card will be shown on Sky Sports Box Office (Sky channel 491), Sky Sports Box Office HD (Sky channel 492) and in UHD (Dolby Atmos available) in the UK at a fee of £26.95. Both Sky and non-Sky customers can watch the fight.

In America, the fights will be shown on the streaming service DAZN.
