CLBRIBERY: Enyimba's Afelokhai Reveals How He Rejected Bribe From Sudanese Club - Sports - Nigeria

Nigeria’s professional league players languish in abject poverty

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Theophilus Afelokhali, a goalkeeper with Kano Pillars FC earning a meager wage of 14.4m Naira ($32,953) yearly, and Godwin Ogbaje of Abia Warriors FC, a player that takes home a paltry monthly salary of 1 million Naira ($2,288), represent the richest Nigerian based players.

Sports Joust can now authoritatively report that only these two players currently enjoy the recommended basic salary in the Nigerian professional football league (NPFL), which many soccer pundits say is not commensurate with the economic reality in the country.

More than eight years after the disbanded League Management Company (LMC) ordered club owners in Nigeria to pay a minimum wage of 12 million Naira basic annual salary to professional league players, only two players are currently enjoying the official wage nationwide.

Sports Joust’s investigation also reveals that even though 99 percent of the professional players who ply their trades in the Nigerian premiership league earn below the seven-digit number recommended by the suspended league company, only less than 10 percent of football players receive their salaries when due.

In contrast, most local-based players are owed as much as seven to eight months salaries in advance.

During the 2019/ 2020 season, which saw players of Hartland FC, Sunshine Stars FC, and Rivers FC go on strike in protest over unpaid salaries, forcing governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state to set up a standing committee to resolve Rivers FC’s unpaid wage bill deadlock.

A source close to Aba-based Enyimba FC told our reporter that it would be very difficult for Nigerian clubs to pay the official salary rate without a vibrant marketing and sponsorship drive.

“The LMC did not consider all these economics before asking us to pay one million Naira minimum wage in Nigeria. I don’t think it will work,” our source added.

The Interim League Management Committee will be inaugurated by the NFF chairman Ibrahim Gusau this weekend.

Victor Osimhen snubbed Manchester United’s advances

‘My boy had clear ideas, ‘ Agent says

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen rejected a proposed move to Manchester United in the summer, .

This is according to the player’s agent, Roberto Calenda, who spoke to Kiss Kiss’ show Radio Goal via SportWitness.

Osimhen was a legitimate target for United in the summer transfer window and was tipped to be United’s replacement in case Cristiano Ronaldo ended up leaving.

United’s Boss, Erik Ten Hag

It is an open secret that Ronaldo was looking to engineer an exit away from Old Trafford but failed in his efforts as no elite club was interested in his services.

The 37-year-old’s agent Jorge Mendes, proposed a swap deal involving his client going to Naples and Osimhen the other way.

This did not materialize due to Aurelio De Laurentiis, president of Napoli, demanding outrageous sums to €130m for the striker late in the window.

As well as Ronaldo staying with his club, Osimhen also remained with the Gli Azzurri. The Serie A giants are currently top of the league and are flying in the Champions League under Luciano Spalletti.

Calendar, while alluding to United’s failed pursuit, revealed, “Victor is the object of interest of many teams, it’s certainly not a mystery.”

“I would add, however, that things are done in three: who sells, who buys, and the player. I was clear this summer because I knew that a fuss would happen for news coming out of those who perhaps had other interests.”

He added, “Me, the boy, and Napoli had clear ideas. Victor never had the will to leave Napoli. He always had one desire, that of playing a great season between the league and the Champions League.”

The agent, however, did not close the door for his client to move to the Red Devils and other potential suitors, and the facilitator remarked that the market was still dynamic and things could change at a moment’s notice.

United should be alert to the Nigerian’s situation and, should he become available in the market, ensure they are in contention for his signature.

Neymar denies alleged Barcelona corruption charges

He says: ‘I did not participate in the Barcelona transfer

talks’

An investment firm has called for Neymar to face a five-year prison sentence when he stands trial this week on fraud and corruption charges relating to his transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013; the Brazil star denies all wrongdoing- Skysports.

Neymar on his way out of the trial on Tuesday

Neymar is on his way out of the trial on Tuesday.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar Jr told a court on Tuesday that he did not participate in negotiations over his transfer to “childhood dream” club Barcelona from Santos in 2013 but had signed what his father had told him.

Neymar’s parents, former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and representatives for the Spanish club and the Brazilian team have also appeared in court after a complaint brought by Brazilian investment group DIS regarding the amount of the player’s transfer.

Along with Neymar, 30, eight other defendants are on trial on fraud and corruption charges over the transfer, including his parents, representatives of the two clubs, former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, and former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

All defendants have denied wrongdoing.

“I didn’t participate in the negotiations. My father always took care of it and always will. I sign everything he tells me to sign,” Neymar told the court in Barcelona in his first testimony in the trial that began on Monday.

“Playing for Barcelona was always my dream, a childhood dream.”

What is the background to the Neymar trial?

Neymar set to testify in fraud trial over Barcelona transfer postregister.com.

The case centers on an allegation made by Brazilian investment firm DIS, which owned 40% of the rights to Neymar when he was at Brazil’s Santos, that it lost out on its rightful cut from the transfer because the value of the deal was understated.

The alleged offense Neymar Jr and his family are accused of is also not punishable by law in Brazil.

Neymar and his father could face a prison sentence of up to two years if found guilty. They could also face a fine of more than £8.7m (€10m).

Rosell could face a five-year jail term and Barcelona an €8.4m fine.

A court document released in July alleges that Barcelona initiated negotiations in 2011 with the player, paying him €40m to ensure his move when his contract with Santos expired in 2014 and thereby preventing other clubs from signing him.

“Our intention was to prepare a career plan for him in Europe, where we had already established he could learn the language, etc. And knowing his dream to play for Barcelona, we signed that priority agreement with them,” the player’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, told the court.

None of the defendants who are representatives or former figures at the clubs have yet given their evidence. Neymar and his parents had the right not to testify but decided to do so, answering questions only from the prosecutor and from their own layers.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, appearing as a witness via video link, told the court his club had made offers of €45m in 2011 and €36m in 2013 to sign Neymar. Still, the player chose to join Barcelona instead.

Law firm Baker McKenzie, which is defending Neymar, who joined Paris St Germain in 2017, and his family, has said in a statement it will argue that the Spanish courts lack jurisdiction because the transfer involved a Brazilian national in Brazil.

Neymar’s lawyers say competition rules relate to products and services and do not apply to the transfer market.

The trial comes nearly a month before the World Cup opens in Qatar and is expected to last until October.

Alex Iwobi wants to be like Jay Jay Okocha

Everton’s star wants to be a role model, just like

his Bolton legend uncle

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi wants to emulate his uncle Jay-Jay Okocha and become a role model for youngsters, Carl Markham writes for the Independent.ie.

The Nigeria international has overcome a difficult start to his career at Goodison Park. It is the player who has arguably flourished the most since Frank Lampard took over in January.

Iwobi is not a naturally outgoing, self-confident person. Still, he has been nurtured by Lampard, who has made him comfortable with a defined position in midfield, and he is becoming a key player for his manager.

The 26-year-old grew up in awe of Okocha, a supremely talented attacking midfielder who lit up the Premier League with Bolton in the early 2000s, and hopes a little bit of family magic has transferred to him so he can inspire the next generation.

“He was an entertaining player to watch, and the skills he used to do were outrageous skills that you only see freestylers do,” he said.

“So, yeah, hopefully, the younger viewers will learn a bit more about him and understand why I chuck in some skills too.

“I mean, that’s what kids want to see, you know – people having fun. He was a fun guy to watch.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m just that same kid that wants to express myself and play football, but when I realize that ‘Wow, I have an influence on kids’. It’s mad. I just want to put positive things out there for them.

“It’s nice that kids look up to me and try to imitate me and play like me because I was once that kid who used to look up to my uncle.

“I find it weird, but I do enjoy it.”

October is Black History Month, and all Premier League matches last week were dedicated to No Room for Racism, and players took a knee in all 20 games to show their support.

Club captains decided at the start of the season to use the gesture more sparingly, using it at more significant moments like the round of Boxing Day games immediately after the World Cup, the final day of the season, and the cup finals.

There has been a debate about whether taking a knee still carries the same impact, but Iwobi is keen the message is still heard.

“Black lives do matter, all lives do matter, so it’s just embracing that no matter where we are in the world, we are one, and everyone can embrace it,” he added.

“Taking the knee, yeah, it’s big, especially for kids who don’t know what’s happening.

“If they look at the Premier League and players taking the knee, they will be interested to know the cause.

“By showing people out there that we support that and what it does for people, I’m sure it educates them.

“If they see people in the Premier League, or see other people speaking out, it will make them feel more comfortable to share their experiences, and hopefully get some help and some guidance through whatever they’re going through.”

The Liverpool star is to face months on the sideline

for a calf injury

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for months with a calf injury, Carl Markham writes for the Independent.ie.

The Portugal international was carried off on a stretcher late in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City.

“It’s not good news about Diogo. Yes, he will miss the World Cup,” said Jurgen Klopp.

“(It’s a) pretty serious injury in the calf muscle, and the recovery process starts. That’s it, pretty much.

“That is the first diagnosis, which was pretty clear, and all the rest will now follow in the next few days.

“It is sad news for the boy and us, of course (and) for Portugal. But no (he doesn’t need an operation).

“(It will have a) big impact. So, now we can say that we talk about months because he will not be in for a long time.

“So, we will see. I don’t want to put a number on it now because I always hope there is a very positive development in the middle of the rehab phase, and we can cut days off, but it will be long.”

Nigeria Premier League players face redundancy

Nigeria professional league suffers indefinite Postponement

Players in the Nigerian professional league (NFL) face months-long redundancy following the disbandment of the league management committee (LMC).

The 2022/ 23 NFL season, billed to kick off last month, has been indefinitely postponed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to enable the soccer governing body to resolve its crisis with the LMC.

Sports Joust reliably gathered that the inability of the newly elected NFF board to set up an Interim League Management Committee (ILMC) to manage the competition, pending the time the clubs would be able to run it themselves, is one of the reasons the league may not start any time soon.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar next month may also hinder the commencement of the NPFL as the players, coaches, fans, and administrators will join the rest of the world to watch the one-month-long soccer Fiesta.

In mid-September, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry Of Youths and Sports Development, Ismaila Abubakar, announced the withdrawal of the government’s recognition of the LMC, citing several unpleasant incidents regarding the management of the Football league. At the same time, the Federation government is also set to open a probe of the LMC operations in the past ten years.

In response to the ministry’s statement, LMC also said on its Twitter handle that the league body has the legal backing in the Football laws and regulations constituted in both the NFF and FIFA, including the corporate rules.

Rivers FC won the 2021/ 22 league, while Kano Pillars, Hartland FC, Katsina United, and Mountain of Fire FC suffered relegation to the lower division.

Nigerian stars go up in world athletics ranking.

Nigeria’s track prodigies Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume have made a giant stride in the World Athletics ranking Women Chart.

Ranked 43rd in September 2021, Tobi Amusan is now in the top 10, moving up 38 places to be ranked 5th in the world, while her compatriot and friend Ese Brume moved up 32 spots from being ranked 93rd in the world to 61st within the same period.

Amusan and Brume have enjoyed a remarkable record with amazing results in all major international athletics meet this year.

Amusan set a new world record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.12s, became a World Champion in Eugene, Oregon, at the World Athletics Championships, and successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham. Earlier in the year, she won Gold for Nigeria at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius.

Ese Brume won a silver medal for Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships in Long Jump and struck Gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Both athletes were awarded national honors by the Federal Government for their remarkable achievement for Nigeria at the Presidential Reception held at the State House, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, on September 15th.

Olympic Eagles to Camp in Ibadan

Sports ministry secures campsite for Olympics games

Nigeria’s federal ministry of youth and sports development has secured a campsite for the U23 men’s national team or Olympic Eagles for their qualifying play for the Africa U23 Cup of Nations against Tanzanian this month, according to a communique from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

The ministry is responsible for camping and prosecuting qualifying games of the U23 men and women teams for the Olympic and All African games. Still, the President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, thanked the ministry for securing the camp, which will help the Olympic Eagles prepare for their qualifying joust.

Tanzania hosts the first leg of the contest in the weekend of 21st – 23rd October and travels to Nigeria to reciprocate the return leg duel on Saturday, 29th October. The NFF has announced the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, as the venue for the return leg.

Head Coach Salisu Yusuf has called up 32 players to report for camping in the Oyo State capital this weekend.

Nigeria won the Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Senegal in 2015 and the bronze medal at the Olympic Men’s football tournament in Brazil the subsequent year. However, the class of 2019 U23 Eagles did not make it to the knockout stage in Egypt and therefore failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics last year.

Nigeria won the men’s Olympics football gold medal in Atlanta, the USA, in 1996 and followed up that feat by winning silver in the event in Beijing, China, 12 years later.

Slow fix for Nigeria’s goalkeeper problems

Super Eagles should turn to the local league for new goalkeepers, says Ike Shorunmu

Ike Shorunmu, Nigeria’s goalkeeper trainer, says the problem needs a gradual fix.

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Ike Shorunmu is deeply worried about the team’s recent goalkeeping problem, and he is determined to solve it.

Shorunmu, in a telephone chat with Sports Joust, disclosed that though the technical crew had identified the problem, the coaches would gradually resolve it.

“The situation at hand is not something we can resolve immediately. The coaches are aware of the situation, and we’ll search all the nook and cranny to get the best for the country,” he said.

The former Besiktas of Turkey goalkeeper explained that the goalkeeping arm of any team is a very important area that needs to be fixed if it has the kind of problem the Super Eagles are currently facing.

“It took me five years to take over from Peter Rufa and Aloy Agwu because goalkeeping requires a lot of tutoring from experienced hands, and that’s why we need time to produce the best,” he added.

He also stated that three new goalkeepers would be invited for the next match to fight for the number one position ahead of Nigeria versus Portugal friendly match in Lisbon next month.

Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho’s mistakes have been very costly for Nigeria during the Afcon quarter-final and the 2022 Qatar world cup tickets.
