Herve Renard, the Saudi Arabia national team coach,  has dedicated his team’s group c opening match victory against Argentina to God.

Renard, who made this known in an interview with ESPN  in Qatar, said there are things you can’t explain in life, and since you don’t know how it happened,  you have to give the credit to God.

“It was obvious that Argentina was far better than us on paper and the field. Before the game, I  told my boys to try and do what will make football fans remember them for many years because they may not have another chance to do it again, and the rest is history,” he said.

Renard disclosed that it is not over yet because Saudi Arabia still has two more matches to play against better FIFA-ranked sides to qualify from the group.

The former Zambia and Morocco national teams coach said he ran down to the tunnel after the final whistle because he was jittery and needed to calm down.

He added: ” At the end of the game, I saw my players rolling on the field, I couldn’t hold my emotion, and I had to go elsewhere to cool off.

Argentina was one game away from equalling Italy’s 36-game unbeaten run, the highest so far at the international level.

Saudi Arabia is leading the pack in group C with 3 points from one match after Mexico settled for a goalless draw with Poland.

Japan players celebrate after Takuma Asano scored his side’s second goal during the World Cup group E soccer match between Germany and Japan at the Khalifa

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano scored late goals Wednesday to give Japan a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Germany at the World Cup.

Ilkay Gündogan had given four-time champion Germany the lead with a first-half penalty. But Doan, who plays for the German team Freiburg, pounced on a rebound to equalize in the 76th minute after Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer blocked a shot from Takumi Minamino.

Then Asano, who plays for the German team Bochum, sprinted clear of Nico Schlotterbeck and beat Neuer from a narrow-angle in the 83rd.

It was the first competitive meeting between the two nations.

Before the game, Germany’s players covered their mouths during the team photo in an apparent rebuke to FIFA following its decision to stop plans to wear armbands to protest discrimination in host nation Qatar.

Manchester ends Cristiano Ronaldo’s deal

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Premier League club Manchester United after the team terminated his contract on Tuesday, writes Clemente Lisi for Fansided

Manchester United gave Cristiano Ronaldo the boot on Tuesday after the Premier League club terminated the Portugal star’s contract following weeks of bitter bickering.

In a brief statement on their website, the team said, “The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.”

The statement said the decision had been made by mutual consent.

Ronaldo’s second stint at the club began in August 2021 when he forced a move from Italian side Juventus. Ronaldo had previously played at Man United from 2003 to 2009.

As a result, Ronaldo is free to join another club and will not have to wait until the January transfer window. He had tried to secure a deal at another club last summer but failed to do so.

Sources told ESPN that Man United had “been keen to resolve the situation quickly” and that they “were ready to sue for breach of contract if a mutual termination could not be agreed.”

Ronaldo is one of the best players of his generation. He is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and helped Portugal capture the European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

Osei Kuffour, Black Stars of Ghana assistant coach, has assured fans that the team will not be distracted by the fame and achievements of  Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo when both sides meet in the 2022 world cup Group H opener tomorrow.

Kuffour told Joy FM that the Black Stars are not going on the field to play against Ronaldo alone but the entire Portuguese squad adding that those who think Ghana would be intimidated by the soccer star don’t understand the game.

” The Ronaldo factor will not affect the team. There are other quality players in on their side. Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandez,  Diego Dallot, and Ruben Diaz are as deadly as Ronaldo. We would be beaten thoroughly if we focus on one player and leave the rest unmarked.” he said.

The former Bayern Munich FC of Germany defender explained that part of their game plans is perfect teamwork combined with vision and total concentration throughout the encounter.

Soccer fans and pundits in Ghana think Christiano Ronaldo has the charisma to wreak havoc on the Black Stars.

WORLD CUP NOW: THE ANALYSIS

THREE TAKEAWAYS FROM CROATIA’S SCORELESS DRAW WITH MOROCCO

World Cup Now: 3 takeaways from Croatia's scoreless draw with Morocco

The scoreless draws continued in the World Cup group stage on Wednesday, with Croatia and Morocco failing to find the back of the nets at Al Bayt Stadium. Former United States men’s national team players Jimmy Conrad and Sacha Kljestan give their takeaways from “World Cup Now.”

1. Kljestan: The key players didn’t get it done

Hayim Ziyech coming off of that right side, didn’t have a great game, had a few turnovers early in the match, and wasn’t overly dangerous creating chances or getting shots off himself. Luka Modrić was fine. He played in the midfield but wasn’t his usual buzzing-around self, making plays on both sides. I saw him drop in deep a little bit and try to get in on the ball more often. I’d like to see him more box-to-box, closer to the goal, and setting up plays in the final third.

2. Conrad: Josko Gvardiol is worth the hype

I thought he was excellent. He’s 20 years old and just so cool and calm. I know why Chelsea wanted to buy him for $90 million this past summer. I wasn’t doing that at 20. I was playing many video games and hanging out with my friends, not being courted by one of the biggest clubs in England. I’m very curious about his future, but I think he showed maturity beyond his years, and I think he’s going to be one of the breakout stars of this tournament, so keep your eye on him.

3. Conrad: The goalkeeping was incredible

I thought both sides were excellent. There is something to be said about having a nice, steady presence behind you in that field area, and I don’t think you can win anything of consequence unless you have a hot goalkeeper. I felt that Yassine Bounou for Morocco and Dominik Livaković were both excellent. All of the goalkeeper unions out there that don’t think they get the love and respect they deserve, I’ll give it to you right now.

Qatar 2022: Denmark 0-0 Tunisia

Tunisia earned a deserved point against Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark to kick off their World Cup campaign in Group C and could even have had all three with slightly better luck, writes Jamie Spencer for 90 Min.

The Danes, billed by many as dark horses in Qatar, disappointed on the whole.

Tunisia was more loudly supported inside the stadium and got off to a bright start that seemed to catch the Danes a little cold.

The first big chance went their way, too, with Mohamed Drager’s shot taking a deflection off Andreas Christensen and only narrowly flashing wide of the post.

Denmark seemed to finally catch their breath and get a foothold in the game around 20 minutes in. There was a decent chance for Joachim Andersen at a set piece, while Christian Eriksen also flashed a dangerous ball into the penalty area.

Not long after, Tunisia did have the ball in the net as Issam Jebali raced onto a long through ball and finished past Kasper Schmeichel. But the flag went up as Jebali turned to celebrate, with replays showing he had been around a yard beyond the last defender when he began his run.

After Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Aissa Laidouni had traded efforts, the best chance of the first half also went the way of Jebali. But Schmeichel channeled his father’s spirit into spreading his body as wide as possible and palming the ball behind for a corner as Jebali attempted a dinked finish.

Another offside flag chalked off a goal early in the second half, this time for Denmark.

Substitute Mikkel Damsgaard had been beyond the last line of the defense in the build-up, rendering Andreas Skov Olsen’s finish at the second time of asking meaningless.

During a brief spell in the second half, the Tunisia goal lived a charmed life, which saw Aymen Dahmen make a flying save to deny Eriksen.

From the resultant corner, Mathias Jensen’s back-post traveled agonizingly across the goal, with fellow sub-Andreas Cornelius somehow managing to head it onto the post from virtually on the line.

Substitutions and yellow cards disrupted the rhythm of the final quarter of the contest, but it was still pretty end-to-end without much in the way of clear chances.

Dahmen, who had been great all game, survived a nervous moment in stoppage time when he did just enough to parry a swirling cross-cum-shot, while Tunisian hearts were also in mouths when the referee was waved over to the pitchside monitor to review a potential penalty. The ball had dropped onto the arms of Yassine Meriah. But the official decided there wasn’t enough in it.

Denmark versus Tunisia: Player ratings

Tunisia (3-4-2-1)

GK: Aymen Dahmen – 8/10 – Did everything that was asked of him to keep a clean sheet. He made four saves overall.

CB: Dylan Bronn – 7/10 – Passed the ball forward well to try and get Tunisia onto the attack.

CB: Yassine Meriah – 7/10- Repelled everything that came his way. Survived a stoppage time handball incident that was flagged by VAR.

CB: Montassar Talbi – 7/10 – A similar story to Meriah. He made himself physically difficult to play against.

RWB: Mohamed Drager – 8/10 – Got forward to support the attack well and was an obvious threat. He defended well too.

CM: Ellyes Skhiri – 7/10 – It was important that he not lose the ball cheaply in areas Denmark could capitalize on and never did.

CM: Aissa Laidouni – 8/10 – He enjoyed a strong game where he seemed everywhere. More composure could have resulted in a goal.

LWB: Ali Abdi – 7/10 – Covered plenty of ground up and down the flank.

AM: Anis Slimane – 5/10 – Struggled to get invovled in open play. He took Tunisia’s corners while he was on the pitch.

AM: Youssef Msakni (c) – 6/10 – His shooting radar was slightly off.

ST: Issam Jebali – 8/10 – Worked Denmark back three hard for 80 minutes. They had the ball in the net but were flagged offside, forcing a world-class Schmeichel to save.

SUB: Naim Sliti (67′ for Slimane) – /10 –

SUB: Hannibal Mejbri (80′ for Jebali) – 6/10

SUB: Taha Tassine Khenissi (80′ for Msakni)

SUB: Wajdi Kechrida (88′ for Drager) – N/A

SUB: Ferjani Sassi (88′ for Laidouni) – N/A

Manager: Jalel Kadri – 8/10 – Took a much more considered approach than his opposite number and trusted his starters for longer. The game plan worked exactly as intended.

Player of the match – Aissa Laidouni (Tunisia)

Denmark began their Qatar World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Tunisia on Tuesday, .

The sides are joined in Group D by defending champions France and Australia, and this clash was seen by many as a chance for either side to prove their credentials as a team worthy of a place in the knockout stages.

But neither could break the deadlock at the Education City Stadium, with Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel pulling off a fine save after Issam Jebali went through one-on-one in the first half.

Up the other end of the pitch, Christian Eriksen was denied by a decent stop, and Andreas Cornelius somehow missed a header from a yard out.

Here is how the Denmark players rated in their Group D opener:

Kasper Schmeichel – 7

Denied Jebali with a terrific save when one-on-one, the stop being described somewhat hyperbolically by ITV commentator John Hartson as “one of the best I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Joakim Maehle – 7

The left-back threatened on his flank at every opportunity with some determined runs, neat interplay, and threatening crosses. Perhaps they should have been awarded a penalty in the final 10 minutes after several deft and clever touches in the Tunisia box.

Joachim Andersen – 5

He was a threat from set pieces but was caught out by numerous Tunisia breaks, as were his colleagues in central defense.

Simon Kjaer – 5

The captain should have done more to ensure his team’s high defensive line was adjusted after Tunisia broke through one-on-one multiple times. He was taken off with just over 20 minutes of normal time.

Andreas Christensen – 7

He used his face to block a fierce shot from Youssef Msakni in the early moments before needing a minute to gather his senses. Later made an important interception to stop a cut-back during a promising Tunisia break.

Rasmus Kristensen – 5

The space he vacated by surging up the right flank was exploited by Tunisia at times, and that space wasn’t worth Kristensen’s lack of end product.

Thomas Delaney – 4

Anonymous mostly, with Denmark’s better moves bypassing the midfielder. He was substituted just before half-time after injuring himself in a challenge.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6

He was motivated to get ahold of the game for Denmark, which he tried to do with some switched passes and eager tackles. Had mixed results, however.

Christian Eriksen – 7

He showed throughout the game that his touch, vision, and delivery exceeded those of any other player involved here. His teammates could not convert any of the chances he created, though. Almost put the ball in the top corner in the second half but was denied by a fine save.

Kasper Dolberg – 6

The forward pressed keenly to make the Tunisia midfield and backline uncomfortable. He was substituted on 68 minutes.

Andreas Skov Olsen – 6

In the first half, the winger couldn’t quite time his runs effectively, and his final product was also lacking. He improved after the break, though, and did drill a fine finish into the bottom corner – but the goal was ruled out for offside. He was replaced in 68 minutes.

SUBSTITUTES

Mikkel Damsgaard – 6

He replaced Delaney on 45 minutes and played a much different game than his teammate, playing higher up the pitch and making energized runs.

Andreas Cornelius – 4

Somehow failed to score with a stooping header from a yard out.

Mathias Jensen – 7

He was lively when he came on and knitted some decent passing moves together.

Jesper Lindstrom – 6

Put in a solid showing but could not make enough of a difference to change the game.

Saudi Arabia score wonder goal against Argentina

As Lionel Messi and star-studded Argentina rocked at World Cup

Nowhere to Hide: Lionel Messi hides his face from the reality of Saudi Arabia’s huge upset of Team Argentina at the World Cup

Saudi Arabia star Salem Aldawsari scored a stunner against Argentina at the World Cup to put his side 2-1 in front. The winger curled home an effort from the edge of the box to rock Lionel Messi’s side, who had previously taken the lead through the Paris Saint-Germain star, Jack Otway writes for the Express.

Argentina had taken the lead through Messi in the first half, with the PSG star scoring from the penalty spot after yet another dubious VAR decision. But Saudi bounced back to go 2-1 up, rocking the giants and Messi in the process.

Saleh Al-Shehri drew the underdogs level in the 48th minute, expertly finishing past Emi Martinez to spark wild celebrations in the stands. Al-Dawsari’s goal, however, was a thing of beauty.

The winger cut inside to unleash an unstoppable strike into the top corner, with Martinez getting a hand to it but was unable to keep it out.

It means Saudi has staged a memorable upset that would go down in the World Cup history books.

Argentina has, before this game, gone 36 matches unbeaten.

That’s just one shy of Italy’s record, with Roberto Mancini’s team managing a streak of 37 before losing to Spain in the Nations League this year.

While the Saudis fully deserve their goals, they’ve also been let off the hook, with Argentina seeing two goals disallowed.

Messi had an effort chalked off, with the PSG star just a fraction offside as he put the ball into the net.

BBC commentator Mark Scott reacted to Saudi taking the lead by saying Argentina ‘ looks lost’ in a match, they’re expected to win.

“Argentina has barely been able to get out of their own half in the second period so far,” he said. “They look a little bit lost at the moment.

“The head coach Lionel Scaloni looks completely perplexed. It doesn’t look like he knows what to do.”

And former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison said: “What a finish!

“It is good to play down the right-hand side. It is brilliant defending by Christian Romero initially, but that is a wonderful whipped finish.

“Saudi deserve it in the second half.”

Saudi boss Herve Renard, meanwhile, insisted his side wasn’t there to make up the numbers before the game.

“We didn’t come just to participate; our presence here is not for that,” he said.

“We try to be at the level of the event, and we want the Saudi people to be proud of us.”

How Ghana could line up against Portugal

Ghana line up

Ghana manager Otto Addo has no injury concerns heading into Thursday’s World Cup 2022 Group H opener with Portugal at Stadium 974 in Doha, writes Ben Knapton for Sports Mole.

The Black Stars picked up no issues in their impressive 2-0 friendly win over Switzerland last week, which they achieved with some big names warming the bench.

Keeping Cristiano Ronaldo and co at bay will be the responsibility of number one goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who plies his trade at club level with St Gallen in Switzerland.

Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu and Strasbourg’s Alexander Djiku are battling to join Daniel Amartey in the backline, and the latter’s greater experience could see him get the nod.

Two England-based full-backs, Tariq Lamptey and Baba Rahman, who represent Brighton & Hove Albion and Reading, respectively, will likely complete the Black Stars’ four-man defense.

Thomas Partey was rested for the win over Switzerland, but the Arsenal lynchpin should be a straight swap for Elisha Owusu in the middle as Lens man Salis Abdul Samed holds his place.

Only one of the Ayew brothers may start this one, with Jordan Ayew in line to feature on the left, but Andre Ayew – who now represents Qatari side Al-Sadd – could be edged out by Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Ajax star Mohammed Kudus will expect to fill the hole behind Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams, who prepares to spearhead the attack as he searches for his first international goal for Ghana.

Ghana’s possible starting lineup: Ati-Zigi; Lamptey, Amartey, Djiku, Baba; Partey, Abdul Samed; Sulemana, Kudus, J. Ayew; Williams
