Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain lead the chase for the prized forward

Victor Osimhen: Biography, Career, Marriage, Net Worth, Achievements and Controversy - NewsWireNGR Victor Osimhen: Can you see me now?

Manchester United FC of England must pay  £90 million (pounds) to sign Napoli FC of Italy and Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen when the transfer window reopens in June.

Osimhen is the Serie A leading scorer with sixteen goals from seventeen games.

A report monitored on Manchester United TV says the Red Devils are planning to replace Cristiano Ronaldo with Osimhen and opened talks with the management of Napoli before the end of the last transfer window in January.

According to the report, ” Osimhen’s name is on the list of forwards Manchester United manager  Erik Ten Hag wants to sign next summer. Also on the list are Harry Kane (Tottenham FC),  Boja Iglesias (Real Betis),  Mateo Retegui (Boca Juniors FC), and Anti Fati of Barcelona.

Sports Joust reliably gathered that of all the strikers mentioned earlier, Erik Ten Hag prefers Osimhen because of his efficiency in front of goal and his consistency since he joined Napoli for a club record fee of €70 million (Euros) from  Lille FC of France in 2020.

He won the Serie A  Best Young Player award in the 2021/ 2022 season.

Manchester United director of football John Murtough told Manchester united TV: “I was in Naples during the last transfer window in January because of Osimhen, but our negotiation was inconclusive. We have to wait and see what will happen when the window opens in the summer.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United will have to contend with Paris Saint-Germain FC of France, who also recently made their intentions of signing the Super Eagles attacker known.

Sports Joust reliably gathered that Osimhen’s current market value is between  32.1 million and 53. 6 million euros. Still, Napoli wants to cash in on the player by placing a 120 million Euros (90 million pounds) transfer fee on him because of the caliber of clubs jostling for his signature.

Who wants an Ogugua “O.G” Anunoby trade more?

The Grizzlies or Pelicans, who is more desperate?

NBA: New Orleans Pelicans at Memphis Grizzlies Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

After the Dallas Mavericks officially kicked off NBA Trade Deadline week with the first major deal of the “season” in Kyrie Irving, the reality of the time of year is kicking in. Despite Irving’s off the court distractions, he is more than capable of scoring the ball in bunches and alleviating the pressure on Luka Doncic, who is quite literally carrying the Mavs with a usage rate of 42.7 percent. Even for the 23-year-old that has been a professional for the better part of a decade, that work load is unsustainable. Irving can help.

But at what cost? Dallas just sent two good players — arguably two of the best they had in terms of trade value — in Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie to Brooklyn, as well as future draft picks, for who may amount to a three or four month rental. There’s no guarantee Kyrie Irving wants to stay in Dallas … or that Dallas will want Irving to stay when the season concludes. There’s baggage there, of course – and just how much that is worth is a question that eventually long-term must be answered.

But clearly in the short-term we know the answer. Kyrie has been bet on by Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and general manager Nico Harrison. But is it worth it for three other Western Conference squads to place a similar bet?

Here are two leading “all-in” candidates heading in to Thursday’s deadline – and a prediction on who pulls the trigger.

The young trying to ascend

Don’t look now, but Memphis has lost eight of their last nine games and the Grizzlies are only 2.5 games in front of the Sacramento Kings for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. There are reasons for this – injury, especially to the surprisingly important Steven Adams, for example – but a large enough sample has accumulated to start reasonably saying something is wrong in Memphis.

They’ve given up multiple fourth quarter leads during this current cold spell, committing silly turnovers and executing putrid half-court offense. The rotations have been suspect as well, as Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins tries to find lineups to help cover up the reality that Memphis has limited scoring options off the bench. Young players like Ziaire Williams have not developed the way initially hoped to this point, and beyond the starting five of Ja Morant/Desmond Bane/Dillon Brooks (limited offensively in his own right, but still a defensive master)/Jaren Jackson Jr./Steven Adams the Grizzlies simply do not have enough fire power to be a full-fledged title contender worthy of Celtics or Nuggets level of praise.

But is this the time for Memphis to push their proverbial chips to the middle of the table?

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies at Toronto Raptors Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

When rumored wings like O.G. Anunoby get discussed – who theoretically would be perfectly aligned with the likes of the Grizzlies – it isn’t just Memphis who is mentioned. A team perhaps a bit closer to the “all-in” edge, at least in terms of precedent, is the New Orleans Pelicans. Coming off a blowout win Sunday night over the aforementioned No. 3-seeded Kings, NOLA is primed for a post All-Star break run as they return to fuller health. Unsurprisingly, the currently play-in bound Pelicans also would love to acquire the services of a great defender who can score the ball at 6’7” in Anunoby .. .but they’d also have to pay a price.

Aside from the pretty obvious leak from Toronto of that information, it does beg the question – at what cost? For Memphis? It’d likely come at the expense of future draft flexibility – the kind of movement that the Grizzlies and their GM Zach Kleiman have come to thrive in over the last few years. Memphis has made a move in the NBA Draft every year Kleiman has been at the helm of the Grizzlies franchise. In the absence of talented depth like the Pelicans have, it’d be the precious Memphis draft capital – perhaps upwards of three first rounders – that the team would have to part with.

Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, O.G. Anunoby, and Jaren Jackson Jr. is a hell of a new “Core Four”. But the way this team has been built would be altered for the remainder of the Ja Morant Era. Is this the time for one of the youngest rosters in the NBA to make that choice?

The Pelicans have better (or at least currently more productive) young talent to choose from – Trey Murphy III, Jaxson Hayes, Dyson Daniels, Herbert Jones – as enticing pieces to make a Anunoby trade happen. They also have a glut of draft capital thanks to their deals for Anthony Davis with the Lakers and Jrue Holiday with the Bucks. If NOLA wants Anunoby, it’s fair to say that they can get him and outbid Memphis in terms of current talent PLUS a couple of future first round picks.

But outside of the pressure of trying to prevent Memphis from acquiring Anunoby (and vice versa, of course), with the health of the roster still in question, as tantalizing as a CJ McCollum/Brandon Ingram/O.G. Anunoby/Zion Williamson/Jonas Valanciunas is … does blocking a Grizzlies all-in move mean NOLA is better prepared to win a title now? The Grizzlies are five games ahead of New Orleans for the No. 2 seed, and losing out on depth in the here and now could hurt the Pelicans and their chances to make up ground if something were to happen to Ingram or Williamson again.

Both Memphis and New Orleans are young teams with bright futures. But the present could be much more luminescent if either franchise is willing to outbid the other for Anunoby. Toronto will have its choice of offers, if they choose to trade Anunoby at all. But does O.G. make the Grizzlies or Pelicans possible NBA Finals combatants? That’s what both the Memphis and New Orleans front offices will have to try to answer over the next three days.

Grizzlies, Pelicans NBA trade deadline prediction

The Grizzlies need a shake-up, but go the route of adding bench assistance in some combination of Alex Caruso, Malik Beasley, Alec Burks, or Josh Richardson. Those names can be helpful without costing Memphis that draft flexibility they covet. New Orleans combines draft assets with young players and matching salaries better than Memphis is willing/able to do, and acquires O.G. Anunoby for Dyson Daniels, Devonte Graham, and two future 1st round picks.

Dallas Mavericks complete Tyrie Irving trade

Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and draft picks all in the bargain

Dallas Mavericks v Brooklyn Nets Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

The Brooklyn Nets have traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The Nets are getting back Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected 2029 first round pick, and second round picks in 2027 and 2029 in the deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Irving requested a trade from the Nets on Friday after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Irving’s current deal expires after this season. The Nets currently sit at 32-20 overall and No. 4 in the Eastern Conference on the day of the deal, while the Mavericks are 28-26 overall and the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference.

The Mavericks have been searching for another star to pair with Luka Doncic after losing Jalen Brunson in the free agency to the New York Knicks over the summer. The Lakers, Heat, and Suns were also rumored to be interested in Irving.

Irving has an another controversy filled year for Brooklyn. After sitting out most of last season because he refused to get the Covid vaccine, Irving demanded a trade over the summer after failing to reach a new contract agreement as he entered the last year of his deal. Superstar teammate Kevin Durant also requested a trade, but Brooklyn decided to keep both players coming into this season. The Nets fired head coach Steve Nash after a 1-5 start, with Irving drawing national headlines again for sharing antisemitic propaganda on social media. After a team suspension, Irving returned to the court and played well enough to earn a starting spot in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.

How does Kyrie Irving fit the Mavericks?

Irving gives Dallas a dynamic ball handler and knockdown three-point shooter next to Irving. His on-court skill set feels like a perfect fit next to Doncic … but of course with Irving, there’s always more to worry about off the court.

Doncic was putting up one of the highest usage rates in league history this season without Brunson next to him. The Mavericks had been searching for another star to pair with Doncic after they bailed out of their Kristaps Porzingis experiment at last year’s trade deadline.

The Mavericks are loaded with offensive firepower now. Dallas currently ranks No. 9 in offensive efficiency this season despite Doncic having less support than any other superstar in the league. Dallas’ defense, which currently ranks No. 24 this season, could be even more of a problem now. Irving is not considered a good defender, and Dallas is trading its best wing defender in Dorian Finney Smith in the deal.

Irving is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game on 37.4 percent shooting from three-point range this season. He’s an excellent offensive player as long as he keeps the focus only on basketball. At this point, Irving isn’t getting the benefit of the doubt from anyone in that regard. This feels like an awfully risky move for the Mavericks, especially when you consider they will have to re-sign Irving to a max extension over the offseason.

Clearly, Doncic was putting a lot of pressure on the team to improve the roster while he’s enjoying an MVP caliber season this year.

Where do the Nets stand after trading Kyrie Irving?

The Nets are acquiring a couple solid veterans in this deal in Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith.

Brooklyn knows all about Dinwiddie, who emerged as a quality lead ball handler during the five seasons he spent with the Nets from 2016-2017 to 2020-2021 before he signed with the Washington Wizards in free agency. Dinwiddie has had a nice year playing off Doncic this season, averaging 17.7 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game on 40.5 percent three-point shooting. He gives the Nets a 6’6 ball handler who can run pick-and-roll, hit spot-up threes, and help run the offseason.

Finney-Smith is also a good addition for Brooklyn. He’s broke out as a key piece during the Mavericks’ run to the Western Conference Finals last season by defending the best scorers on the opposition. Finney-Smith is a pure 3-and-D wing who won’t create much off the dribble, but can defend a variety of matchups at 6’7, 220 pounds, and has generally been a solid three-point shooter. His three-point percentage has fallen from 39.5 percent last season to 35.5 percent this season.

The unprotected 2029 first round pick going to Brooklyn could also be a big deal. Imagine if Doncic eventually demands out of Dallas or leaves in free agency … suddenly that pick would be looking very juice.

The big question for Brooklyn after this trade is what happens to Durant. Durant requested a trade over the summer, but the Nets didn’t give him his wish. Durant has responded by having an MVP caliber season and carrying the Nets up the East standings this year. Durant and Irving have always been very close, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if KD eventually asks out again after this move. Both Durant and the Nets were reportedly caught off guard by Irving’s trade demand.

The Mavericks are taking a huge risk with high upside in trading for Irving. The Nets now have be concerned about how Durant is feeling. This is a major NBA trade, and it’s going to impact the top of the standings in both conferences.

‘You need fate to win Super Bowl’

Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott, and the luck of winning a Super Bowl

Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl XXVII

The beauty of football lies in its complexity. A lineman doesn’t block, a receiver drops a pass, a running back can’t find the hole, and the play is over. It takes near-perfect execution from all eleven players on the field for a play to work. Then consider that a team has to do this roughly 150 times a game to win, Aidan Davies reports for SB Nation.

Throw in the fact that to win the Super Bowl, a team has to muster enough of these performances to land among the top 44% of the league. That punches your ticket to have the opportunity to try and string together 12 to 16 straight quarters of flawless football. If you can do all of that, a banner is raised, and you can claim a Super Bowl title. Considering all of that, doesn’t it seem like a large chunk of victory can be credited to getting lucky at the right time?

The luck of winning a Super Bowl

There is no debating that winning in the NFL takes skill. Patrick Mahomes has proven to be a generational talent, and not coincidentally, he has appeared in the AFC championship every season he was the starting QB. But to assume that winning a Super Bowl simply comes down to which team has the more talented roster, or more talented QB, is an incorrect assumption.

Let’s start with what is already the most hotly-debated topic of the Cowboys’ offseason, their quarterback. Since entering the league in 2016, Dak Prescott has yet to reach an NFC Championship, so surely he is to blame for the team’s lack of postseason success, right? Well, since his rookie season, Prescott ranks eighth by EPA per play among quarterbacks in the postseason. That beats out names like Tom Brady, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Jared Goff. All of those names have appeared in a Super Bowl, yet played worse in the postseason over that stretch. Seems odd?

While quarterback is the most important position on the field, it takes a full roster to win it all. That is why names like Nick Foles, Joe Flacco, Brad Johnson, and Trent Dilfer all boast a title belt. If the Super Bowl was simply gifted to the best quarterback in the league, then the NFL would not be on a 23-year slump of the MVP failing to hoist the Lombardi in the season they win it.

There is no denying Prescott could have been better in the playoffs in recent years. However, it’s not as if the Cowboys were shoe-ins to be crowned champions, and Prescott simply blundered it away. Here is the likelihood of the Cowboys winning it all entering the postseason since Dak arrived on scene (probability based on betting lines):

  • 2022: 6% chance (+1600)
  • 2021: 8% chance (+1200)
  • 2018: 4% chance (+2500)
  • 2016: 22% chance (+350)

The only year where you could argue the Cowboys were even given a fighting chance was 2016, and even then, it was roughly one in five. Based on these odds, the Cowboys had a 35% chance to win in just one of the previous four postseasons they appeared in. And if you exclude 2016, they had just a 17% implied probability of raising a banner.

If you believe Prescott is not a good enough quarterback, that is reasonable. However, his lack of postseason success shouldn’t be used as the primary argument against him because he was never expected to win it in the first place. Davis Mills isn’t criticized for missing the playoffs this year. But the Texans had better odds of making the playoffs before the season started, per Vegas, than the Cowboys did of winning the Super Bowl when the postseason started. Evaluating a player based on their ability to hit a long shot will always lead to incongruities in measurement.

But let’s step further back. Putting aside a quarterback’s impact, the recent Super Bowl winners seem even more random. There is no “formula” for a winning team. Since 2006, here are the offensive and defensive rankings of each champion (offensive rank/defensive rank):

  • 2006 Colts: 2/23
  • 2007 Giants: 14/17
  • 2008 Steelers: 20/1
  • 2009 Saints: 1/20
  • 2010 Packers: 10/2
  • 2011 Giants: 9/25
  • 2012 Ravens: 10/12
  • 2013 Seahawks: 9/1
  • 2014 Patriots: 4/8
  • 2015 Broncos: 19/4
  • 2016 Patriots: 3/1
  • 2017 Eagles: 3/4
  • 2018 Patriots: 4/7
  • 2019 Chiefs: 2/18
  • 2020 Buccaneers: 5/5
  • 2021 Rams: 8/9

Granted, there is a pattern. Most winners are found in the top ten by at least one of the two metrics. That is enough to punch your ticket into the playoffs, so if you don’t fall inside the top ten on offense or defense, there is a slim chance you’re playing in January.

Outside of that, where is the pattern? Great defenses have won it, great offenses have won it. But also notice how 75% of Super Bowl winners didn’t have the best offense or best defense. They were good but were not leading the league on either side of the ball. In other words, 94% of Super Bowl winners since 2006 did not have the best offense in the league, and 81% of winners didn’t have the best defense. It is almost like winning comes down to getting hot at the right time and having the ball bounce your way.

And “having the ball bounce your way” should not be minimized. Unlike in hockey, basketball, and baseball, the winner in each round of the NFL playoffs comes down to one game. Meaning that an unfortunate turn of luck ends a season prematurely. Consider these scenarios:

  • What would have happened if David Tyree wasn’t able to pin the ball against his helmet in the 2007 season?
  • What would have happened if Santonio Holmes couldn’t get his second foot down in the 2008 Super Bowl?
  • What would have happened if the Seahawks ran it with Marshawn Lynch on the one-yard line in 2014?
  • What would have happened if the Falcons got the ball first in overtime in 2016?
  • What would have happened if the Rams didn’t get 7 “goal-to-go” plays with less than 2-minutes remaining in last year’s Super Bowl?

All of these moments changed the outcome of the game, likely sealing the victory for one team. And since one game decides the winner, these “flip of a coin” events were the difference between winning and losing. Sure, some of those plays took skill, but it would be foolish not to argue the impact of luck in crucial moments.

And speaking to Cowboys fans about the impact of luck should not be a difficult argument to make, for example:

  • What if Tony Romo didn’t fumble the snap on the PAT against Seattle?
  • What if the Dez Bryant catch was ruled a completion?
  • What if Jared Cook hadn’t got both feet in bounds in 2016?
  • What if the Cowboys’ run defense decided not to take a night off in 2018?
  • What if Dallas didn’t decide to run a QB sneak with no timeouts in 2021?
  • What if Tony Pollard didn’t get injured this year?

Would Dallas have won the Super Bowl in each of those seasons? Probably not. Would they even have won those games? There is no guarantee. But at least they would not have been on the wrong side of luck, which does play an impact.

There are several other arguments that point to luck being a huge factor in playoff success:

  • Injuries
  • Ease of matchups (Just ask this year’s Eagles)
  • Officiating
  • Weather
  • Scheduling

Now, this is not to downplay the impact of a team’s performance. Even with all the luck in the world, if a team is not ready to take advantage of the moments they are given, they will assuredly lose. There is a legitimate argument that Dallas, even with an incredible amount of luck, was not good enough to win the Super Bowl in any season since the 1990s.

But it should be noted that winning it all is an endeavor into how lucky you can get over a three to four-game stretch. The Cowboys simply haven’t been the luckiest team in the league over the last two and a half decades. But neither have 17 other NFL teams, more than half the league, and eight of those teams have had a Hall of Fame QB under center who could not deliver a ring. So, keep in mind that while it has been a long drought for the Cowboys, it could be worse.

Now, there is a lot to be said about the fact that they haven’t even reached the NFC Championship since their last Super Bowl win. While that is even more disappointing, a Conference Championship, or even a Super Bowl appearance, means very little when you don’t win it all.

Thus, the train keeps on moving. Next September, the Dallas Cowboys will attempt to snap a streak that has been hanging over their shoulder for decades now. To do so, they will need to find good fortune in one of the most complex sports around. Seems daunting, but such is life as an NFL fan. Here’s to luck.

Andriy Shevchenko. Diego Milito. Cristiano Ronaldo. Krzysztof Piątek. Romelu Lukaku. Ademola Lookman.

When looking at the complete list of players who scored 12 or more goals in their first 20 Serie A matches, it is certainly no surprise to see the first three, while Lukaku’s impact in his first spell at Inter is undeniable, Adam Digby writes for Forbes.

Poland international Piątek may have faded after his incredibly bright start – and a big money move to AC Milan – but just being among such illustrious company shows just how good Lookman has been thus far for Atalanta.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has 12 goals (and three assists) in just 19 Serie A appearances, with five of those games seeing him introduced as a substitute. It is also worth noting that only one of his goals – his first – has come in a match where he began on the bench, while Lookman added two more goals in his only Coppa Italia start too.

Ademola Lookman and Atalanta B.C.

Making this feat even more remarkable is the fact that over the previous four seasons combined, he managed a total of just 10 league goals in 92 appearances. Obviously part of that is simply part of the maturation process, but a deeper look at his journey so far offers far more nuance.

After starting out with Charlton, Lookman moved to Everton in January 2017 in an £11 million ($13.41 million) deal, with Ronaldo Koeman in charge at Goodison Park. By the time the player moved to RB Leipzig on loan a year later, he had seen the Dutch boss sacked, played under caretaker boss David Unsworth and then the permanent new manager Sam Allardyce.

“As a young player it’s difficult going through that process, because you never know what the next manager is going to think,” Lookman told Sarah Shephard of The Athletic recently.

“But if you believe in your ability, you believe that whatever manager comes in, he’s gonna like you. But at the time, they were changing managers because the team wasn’t stable in itself. So they weren’t going to take a risk on putting me in.”

A £22.5 million ($27.44 million) deal would see Lookman return to Leipzig, followed by loan spells with Fulham and Leicester City, but eventually found himself craving some stability.

“I had a few offers in England and I was thinking, ‘what do I really need next season?” he continued in that aforementioned interview with The Athletic.

“I sat down with my family and with Atalanta coming in, we just made up our minds that this was another stage in the journey that we need to go through, because we felt like it was important that there was another layer added to me.”

One important factor in the deal was undoubtedly Atalanta director Lee Congerton, who was at Leicester with Lookman and who is responsible for scouting new players for La Dea.

But also waiting in Italy was Gian Piero Gasperini, who has been at the helm in Bergamo since June 2016, only seven months after an 18-year-old Lookman made his professional debut for Charlton.

It also means Gasperini has been Atalanta’s Coach for over six and a half years, when the second-longest serving boss in Serie A is Stefano Pioli who has only spent three years and three months on the bench at AC Milan.

No other Coach has yet managed two full years in charge, a statistic which underlines just how unique the situation is at Atalanta, something that their newest star has already fully embraced.

“We’ve an amazing team, a strong team, a team full of talent, a team full of hunger and passion, so there are big things on the horizon for the team,” Lookman told The Times.

“I’ve started eating a lot of plain foods like white pasta, like more fish. That’s my diet. No sauce. Some vegetables. Sleep’s very important, trying to get in eight hours. After games, I’ll do recovery, maybe going into the cryo chamber, doing some upper body work, some stretching.

“[Gasperini] is intense, a strong man, a top coach,” he continued. “He always wants us to attack, he loves seeing goals. But there’s a structure: he wants us to build through the thirds. I definitely have a defensive role, to help the team within the structure, but that defensive role also allows me to attack.”

That willingness to adapt, change, grow and improve has clearly served Lookman well, his 12 goals putting him behind only Nigeria team-mate Victor Osimhen – subject of this previous column – in the race to be Serie A’s top scorer.

It is an incredible return on the €15 million ($16.34 million) Atalanta paid Leipzig to sign him this past summer, and his new boss is clearly delighted with what he has seen so far.

“He has technique, pace, is a player any coach would be happy with,” Gasperini told Sky Italia back in October. “We realised pretty quickly what he was capable of, he was convincing from the start.”

So while those of us watching from the sidelines are stunned to see Ademola Lookman’s form putting alongside Shevchenko, Ronaldo and Milito, the man himself believes he is simply doing what he should be doing.

“Of course, I expected it,” he told Sky Italia when asked about his incredible scoring streak. “Maybe it’s a surprise to you, but I know what I can bring, I know what I can do.”

Now the whole of Serie A knows too.
