Nigeria’s U20 boys, the Flying Eagles, failed to reach the 17th Africa U20 Cup of Nations Final, falling by a lone goal to The Gambia’s Young Lions in the second semi-final played at the Cairo International Stadium on Monday evening.

Lanky forward Adama Bojang capitalized on a defensive slip by captain Daniel Bameyi to slot beyond goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso for the match’s only goal in the 7th minute. It was the only goal Aniagboso had conceded in the tournament.

Nigeria’s rapid raiders Ibrahim Muhammad, Samson Lawal, Haliru Sarki, and Francis Abubakar failed to get their strikes on target. In the second half, Belgium-based forward Ahmed Abdullahi struck the upright base from the penalty spot as the Flying Eagles put every foot wrong.

Defender Benjamin Frederick showed grit and intention in the 77th minute, but his efforts were foiled close to the goal line. Onuche Ogbelu’s rising shot rose too high two minutes into added time.

The Gambia will take on Senegal’s Young Lions of the Teranga in Saturday’s Final. The Group A winners sliced Tunisia to bits in a 3-0 win in the first semi-final played at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia earlier in the day.

Seven-time champions Nigeria will play for the bronze medals against Tunisia on Friday.

The 2023 edition of Mabel Madojiemu schools athletics championships has been slated for November 2-3 as organizers plan to make the event Zonal and to comprise six South-South regional states.

It was previously a Delta and Edo States affair after two editions hosted in Benin.

Speaking during a chat, the sponsor of the meet and former Nigerian international athlete, Princess Mabel Madojiemu, disclosed that the championship, now in its third edition, needs to spread to other states so that junior athletes can also benefit.

“In 2023, we want to come out in a big way; we want to do a different thing,” Princess Madojiemu began.

“the outcome of the 2022 edition was such a delight, and God willing, other kids from around the Zone should also benefit.

“We must continue to focus on grassroots development… if we don’t catch them young from the schools, then we would have no athlete to fall back on.”

Last month, Princess Madojiemu sponsored some of the talents spotted in the 2022 edition of the national school sports athletics meet, which inspired going national.

Technical director of the championships, coach Mutiu Oluwa confirmed that plans are in the pipeline to make the competition bigger and better.

Oluwa added: “We are aware of the financial constraints. But between now and November, we have time to work on the logistics of hosting the entire country.

“It would be fun, and we are working in advance to improve things for the participating schools.”

The first two championship editions were closed to schools within and around Benin city.

Over 500 junior AthIetes participated in the second edition of the Benin, Edo State competition. More are expected to participate when the event goes Zonal later in the year.

Nigeria through to FIFA U20 World Cup

Flying Eagles pip Uganda 1-0 for World Cup ticket

This is how we roll: Nigerian fans gyrate to their music and songs as Nigeria flies past Uganda to Indonesia for the FIFA U-20 World Cup

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Nigeria reached the 23rd FIFA U20 World Cup finals on Thursday evening after defeating Uganda by a lone goal in Ismailia in the second quarter-final of the 17th Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

Goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso, who has been huge for the Flying Eagles since taking over the sticks after the opening-day defeat to Senegal in Cairo, captained in the absence of the suspended Daniel Bameyi, but was unfazed by the band and gave another assuring performance for the seven-time champions.

As early as the 10th minute, he had to enact a reflex save to stop a bullet header from a corner kick.

Both teams continued to frisk for opportunities, with Nigeria’s Ibrahim Muhammad and Haliru Sarki probing deep but undone mostly by inaccurate passes and poor ball-holding in the final quarter.

However, on the dot of half an hour, Ibrahim Muhammad, who scored one of the goals that sank Mozambique on the final day of Group A attrition, latched onto a long ball from the defense, controlled well, and fired. His effort saw the ball hit the upright, and in his confusion, defender Ibrahim Juma helped the ball into his net for the match’s only goal.

Muhammad should have made it two to purchase a cruise for Nigeria only four minutes after the restart, but he put too much power behind his turn and shot.

On the hour mark and seven minutes after, Aniagboso saved a point-blank shot to sustain Nigeria’s lead. In the 80th minute, Samson Lawal spun the ball away from the Nigerian goalline from a 22-yard well-taken Ugandan free-kick.

The victory earned Nigeria a slot in Monday’s semi-finals and a ticket to Indonesia. The Flying Eagles will take on the winner of the clash between Congo and Tunisia, happening at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday.

Anyansi-Agwu decries fake News

NFF First Vice-President issues stern warning to perpetrators

Enyimba Board Members Pass 'Vote Of Confidence' On Chairman Anyansi-Agwu      Anyansi-Agwu

By Rasheed Adewuyi

First Vice-President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, has expressed dismay and disappointment with a recent publication in an online blog in which he was quoted as having denied Nigeria’s joint bid with Benin Republic to host the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement he signed on Wednesday evening, the respected football administrator strongly denied ever granting any such interview or chatting with any media person on the subject. He said he would not hesitate to drag future offenders to the law court.

Agwu-Agwu said: “My attention has been drawn to a malicious publication on an online blog, with the misleading title, NFF Denies Joint AFCON 2025 Bid with Republic of Benin, in which I was quoted to allude to being unaware of Nigeria’s bid for the hosting rights of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The entire article is built on falsehood and mischief, as I have never granted an interview to any media outlet on the subject. It is shocking that the writer, with a flagrant disregard for the ethics of journalism, could so falsely attribute such a quote to me.

Sadly, this is not the first of such calumny as there have been previous publications in other online platforms suggesting division within the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.

While I have always maintained a cordial relationship with members of the press and have consistently stood firmly for progressive and ethical journalism, it is most condemnable that some persons have rather chosen the untoward path of using their platforms to malign and create unnecessary tension.

Consequently, I wish to sound a warning to perpetrators of such practices to desist, as I will not hesitate to take appropriate legal actions against writers/editors who deploy their platforms to spread false and malicious content aimed at smearing my reputation and straining my professional relationships.”

Kelechi Iheanacho embarasses Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City boss worried by teams’ unreliable form

Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester City, FA Cup, RoversBrendan Rodgers is sick of the form of Kelechi Iheanacho and his Leicester City teammates

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Leicester City FC Manager Brenden Rodgers is unhappy with Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho and his teammates following the team’s 1-2 FA Cup loss to lowly Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday at the King Power stadium.

Rodgers, who described the defeat as an embarrassment, said his boys did not do what was expected against Blackburn.

“We just didn’t perform well. It’s as simple as that. We won 4-1 a couple of weeks ago, and to do well and constantly well, is to take that mentality and that courage into the game, this would be a tough game, but we would get through. But we didn’t, ” Rodgers told Leicestershire live.

“Congratulations to Blackburn Rovers. They were the better team. We presented them with a couple of goals; we gave the ball away cheaply for the first (goal). Likewise with the second (goal). The player gets through the middle of our defense far too easily. Then you’re chasing it.”

“Two-nil, it’s an easy scoreline to go freely in. We showed spirit and drive then, but you must show that when it’s 0-0 and impose your game. We weren’t able to do that, sadly.”

The former Liverpool manager, who is seriously worried about his players’ lackluster performances this season, told his team at their post-match meeting to buckle up or risk losing their places to players with the right mentality to improve the team’s current standard.

Leicester City currently occupies the 14th position with 24 points from 24 matches. The Foxes are just 3 points above the relegation zone.

Leicester City was relegated from the Premiership in the 2003/ 2004 season with 38 points, along with Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Africa U-20 Nations Cup Action: Nigeria captain, Daniel Bameyi fends off a Senegal U-20 attacker in Nigeria’s opening game of the tournament

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi will be missing in action when Nigeria takes on Uganda in one of the quarter final matches at the on-going African U-20 Nations cup in Egypt.

The Center back will observe a one match ban due to the accumulation of two yellow cards. Bameyi was booked in the group matches against Senegal and Mozambique.

Speaking on Bameyi’s one-match ban, Flying Eagles coach, Ladan Bosso, admitted that though his captain would be missed on Thursday against Uganda because of his work rate and quality leadership in the team, the side must find a way to weather the storm.

“Suspension is part of football. Other competent players can fit into his position. There’s no cause for alarm,” Bosso said.

On Nigeria’s chance of qualifying for the semi final, Bosso added: “Before we left our training camp in Morocco, NFF president, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, told us clearly that the the first objective should be getting a ticket to the FIFA World cup. We are at the most important stage of the championship, and we can not afford to falter.”

“We know that Nigerians are watching and looking up to us to deliver. While our mission remains to bag the world cup ticket, we are also eyeing the trophy, which is still several matches away. For the moment, we are working hard to see that we control proceedings on Thursday.”

In other quarter-final matches, Group A winner, Senegal will take on Benin Republic at the Cairo International stadium, on Thursday. Gambia will trade tackles with South Sudan while Congo will slug it out with Tunisia.

The four Semi finalists will represent Africa at the U-20 FIFA World cup in Indonesia between May 20 to June 11, 2023.

Egypt 2023: Peseiro commends Flying Eagles

After two rocket goals see off the Young Mambas

Watch highlights of Nigeria U20 versus Mozambique U20

Super Eagles Head Coach José Santos Peseiro said he was impressed after scorching shots from the boots of forwards Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad gave Nigeria all three points and a deserved quarter-final ticket at the 23rd Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt on Saturday.

Mozambique’s Young Mambas were the victims of Nigeria’s junior side this time.

Buoyed by the win over host nation Egypt on Wednesday that redirected their sail back on track, the Flying Eagles played with commendable self-assurance. They dominated large swathes of a game played under floodlights at an impressive facility in northeastern Egypt.

Ayuba Francis failed to put enough purchase price on his strikes in the 6th and 24th minutes on the Suez Canal Authority Stadium turf in Ismailia. Still, Lawal, after receiving a pass from the nimble-footed Haliru Sarki, glided past two defenders before releasing a fierce shot that nestled safely in the net, beyond the groping arms of Kimiss Zavala in the 32nd minute.

With five minutes to the interval, Muhammad ran rings around the Mozambican rearguard several times, got into a vantage position for a high strike that flew past Zavala, and found the top right corner for Nigeria’s second.

In the second half, Nigeria’s safe hands Chijioke Aniagboso, was his imperial self as he denied substitute Edson Mucuana from close range in the 55th minute. At the other end, another scorcher from Lawal rocked Zavala, but he parried it for a corner kick.

In the 76th minute, substitute Adams Olamilekan failed to find the net after a sweet lay-on by Ahmed Abdullahi. With three minutes to go, Aniagboso again came up big when Jose Rabelina Zavala thought he was in a position to reduce Mozambique’s deficit.

Victory took the Flying Eagles to six points. With Senegal pounding host nation Egypt 4-0 in Cairo to finish top with a maximum of nine points from three matches, Nigeria finished a comfortable second. Flying Eagles will play Uganda, who topped Group B via the ballot rule, in the quarter-finals on Thursday at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia.

Goals-blazing Nigeria international striker wants Serie A and Africa Nations cup wins so bad

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen says winning the Serie A this season and the African cup of Nations slated for Ivory Coast next year are his main priorities.

Napoli is leading the pack in Seria A of the Italian football league with sixty-five points from 24 matches, scoring fifty-eight, and conceding just fifteen goals, with Osimhen already scoring nineteen times this season for his club.

Osimhen told CBS sports that he has dreamed of winning the two competitions since moving to Italy.

He joined Napoli for a club record fee of 70 million Euros from Lille FC of France in 2020 and immediately won the 2021/2022 Serie A young player award.

“The Serie A and the Afcon are on my mind. I will be very happy if we can win the league at the end of the season. After that, the next thing is to help my country win the African cup of Nations,” Osimhen told CBS Sports.

Nigeria currently leads the Group A of the CAF Nations Cup qualifiers with 6 points from two games.

Osimhen adds, “I’ll start thinking about playing in the next world cup if I can win the league and the Afcon. I felt bad that Nigeria failed to beat Ghana to qualify for Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

The Super Eagles played a goalless draw with the Black Stars at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi. They settled for a 1-1 draw at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, ceding Ghana’s advantage to qualify for Qatar 2022 on the away goal rule.

Nigeria international forward Osimhen’s 19th goal of the season for Napoli matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring record in eight successive Serie A games.

On the Map: Gombe Athletics Grand Prix is now on the athletics map

Nigeria marathon legend Colonel Abbas Mohammed (retired) has warned against athletes engaging in multiple yearly full marathon races, a trend that could lead to Athlete burnout.

Mohammed, one of the coaches from Army University that participated in the ‘Training the trainer’ seminar in Gombe this week, said it is dangerous having an athlete participate in more than three full Marathon races in one year, adding that this could lead to sudden death.

“Certainly, in this country, I’m one of the foremost marathon runners and have the right and experience to advise up-and-coming runners on how to deal with multiple long-distance races for their good,” Mohammed said.

“I discovered that due to increasing prize money in marathon races nowadays, athletes are lured into participating in more than three races per year without considering the health implications.

“Training alone takes a lot from an athlete; then they have to contend with the actual competition, which is also very strenuous.

“Most athletes today can’t afford the services of experienced nutritionists and, therefore, train and compete without good preparation; this could lead to sudden death.

“The full Marathon (42.5) race is about 45 km, and organizers of these races and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) should be mindful of Athletes’ health before allowing their participation.”

However, a resource person at the just concluded Athletes’ Seminar in Gombe, Dr. Alex Sule Mana, advises runners to choose their races carefully and not be greedy for money to the detriment of their health.

“That is why it is advisable for runners always to take insurance policies,” Dr. Mana added.

He warned that experienced runners should not go for competition that won’t add up to their well-being, insisting that three full marathon races a year,  with adequate preparation, would be enough for runners.

The Chairman Gombe State Athletics Association, Alhaji Ahmed Gara Shuaibu Gombe, sponsored Tuesday’s one-day NAATO Seminar in his State capital.
