Colby Covington calls Edwards ‘Biggest Cheat’

Says: ‘Leon Edwards is the biggest cheater I’ve ever seen,’ next in line to face ‘The Londoner’

Colby Covington

Presented By Ed Emeanua

Colby Covington, who has lost twice to Kamaru Usman says he considers both Usman and Leon Edwards to be ‘cheaters.

“What I thought about the main event is, damn man, I thought Marty Fakenewsman was a cheater. Man, Leon Scott’s the biggest cheater I’ve ever seen,” Covington told Submission Radio.

According to MMA Weekly, after the Edwards versus Usman fight, Saturday, UFC president Dana White affirmed officially that Leone Edwards versus Colby Covington is officially on the table for any taker during the event’s post-fight press conference.

Covington who als0 weighed in for the Edwards versus Usman 3 as a possible backup for the main eventers as was expected, made championship weight.  He then sat cage-side watching Edwards successfully defend his welterweight diadem.

When asked about the UFC 286 main event that  Covington has twice lost to Usman, he said, “What I thought about the main event is, damn man, I thought Marty Fakenewsman was a cheater. Man, Leon Scott’s the biggest cheater I’ve ever seen,” Covington told Submission Radio.

“The guy talks about ‘headshot, dead’. Dude should be talking about, cage grab, nut grab, nut kick, short grab, this grab. I mean, the guy did everything you could possibly do to cheat in the fight.

“I mean, he made Marty Fakenewsman look like a choirboy out there. The guy’s just a f**king cheater. He’s a piece of sh*t, and I didn’t make much of the fight,” continued Covington.

“Honestly, Marty looked like a shell of his former self. I don’t know if it was the two fights that he had with me and the brutal beatings that he had to take at my hands or whatnot, but it just looks like he’s cashed out. He’s in movies, he’s trying to get to Hollywood, and he’s just not the same guy anymore. And that’s the truth. Everybody saw that.”

Covington dismissed any feat being attributed to Edwards against Usman during the encounter as a flash, hinting that his next mission is to ‘expose’ the champion.

“There wasn’t anything special from Leon Scott. And, you know, I’m excited to get my hands on him now. He’s got nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. And the best part is, you can already see how afraid he is. He’s afraid. You can see it in the way he’s going, ‘oh, Colby’s not…’ No, I’m next, bro. I’m number two in the world. I’m clearly the next contender,” insisted Covington.

“You’re talking about, oh, he hasn’t fought in this. Bro! You fought Nate Diaz, and before that you took off two years. You’re one of the most inactive fighters in the entire history of the company. So, the guy’s a f**king joke. He’s gonna get exposed, and he knows I’m coming to get that belt. He’s not the champion right now, he’s just a placeholder for me.”

Prince Babatunde Omisore: No stone will be left unturned to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for international events

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Nigeria volleyball Federation (NVBF), is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the male and female national teams qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in France and the All Africa Games in Ghana next year.

The first junior national team captain and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation board member , Tunde Omisore who made this disclosure in an interview with Sports Joust said the male and the female national teams are battle ready for the Africa qualifiers later this year.

“The teams are ready for the Africa qualifiers because we have commenced training since the beginning of the year. The Federation and the coaches want the players to be in good shape before the Africa Volleyball governing body releases the fixtures for the qualifying rounds. Foreign based players will join them as soon as we receive the fixtures” he said.

Omisore called on corporate bodies and benevolent Nigerians to assist the Volleyball Federation financially to enable the body prepare for the Olympic Games, Africa qualifiers, the local leagues and the male and female under 19 world cups in Argentina and Hungary.

“Lack of funds and sponsors are the reasons the federation’s league and the Premier league division one and two are not well grounded at this stage as planned by the Federation,” he added.

Omisore said all the 36 states of the federation including the federal capital territory Abuja would be given the opportunity to host the premier and the standard leagues once there’s is a sponsor.

Omisore represented Oyo state at the national Sports festival held in Ibadan in 1982. Oyo state defeated Lagos in the final of the Volleyball event to win the gold medal.

Tottenham players ‘want Antonio Conte fired

Antonio Conte could have a Tottenham Hotspur mutiny on his hands after his extraordinary rant, Patrick Austen-Hardy reports for the Daily Star.

The Italian manager erupted into a fit of rage after Spurs let a 3-1 lead slip to draw 3-3 against Southampton. Conte raged at his players, the Tottenham board, and the mentality of the club as a whole over the course of a jaw-dropping four and a half minute rant in his post-match press conference.

The Italian’s future at the club has been extremely uncertain, due to the fact his contract is up at the end of the season. But in the wake of the outburst, many players within his ranks are reportedly hoping he will be let go by the club before that point.

Reports from The Sun suggest Spurs players believe Conte could be sacked before their next Premier League match against Everton on April 3. The majority of Conte’s squad has departed the club for the international break, linking up with their respective nations.

This time period will be pivotal, if the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager remains at the club. As well as his players, the fiery Italian also appeared to hit out at Spurs owner Joe Lewis and club chairman Daniel Levy.

“They don’t play for something important,” Conte said about his players. “They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.

“It is easy this way. Tottenham’s story is this. For 20 years there is the owner but they never won something. But why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stays here?

“I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench. Until now I try to hide the situation but not now because, I repeat, I don’t want to see what I have seen today because this is unacceptable and also un- acceptable for the fans.”

While Tottenham are just about still in the top four, they went out of the League Cup, the FA Cup, and the Champions League without barely throwing a punch. They lost 2-0 against ten man Nottingham Forest to depart the Carabao Cup, were stunned by Sheffield United in the FA Cup, and failed to score a goal in either of their two legs against AC Milan in the Champions League round of 16.

Athletics underdevelopment in N.E Nigeria explained

School teacher blames it on culture, religion and ignorance

Gara Gombe Athletics Grand Prix

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The forces that are hindering the development of athletics in North-Eastern Nigeria have been traced to the lore of culture, religion and ignorance.

This was the opinion of Ahmed Yunusa Bako, a primary school teacher who attended the first Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe Athletics Grand Prix at the Pantami stadium in Gombe with his pupils in February.

Bako said that children between ages 10 and 13 years old are ripe to engage in sports of their choice but noted that the environment, culture, and religious beliefs often obstruct their aspirations.

“I brought these kids to Pantami Stadium to witness for the first time athletics events at this level. They love athletics, but due to faith, culture and the environment, their parents don’t allow them to participate in sports,” Bako said.

According to the teacher, another factor affecting the participation of young girls in athletics in Northern Nigeria is the sports attire which parents often link with the demeanor of gross public nudeness.

“As you know, culture and religious beliefs abhor such revealing attire for girls here (Northern Nigeria). I’m not an indigene of Gombe State, I came from Kaduna where sports for girls is viewed a lot more differently. I believe that with time, things will improve here in Gombe and the entire North-Eastern Nigeria,” he said.

Bako, who didn’t reveal the name of his school for obvious reasons, noted that students in most urban and state capitals in the North have access to sports facilities than their counterparts living in communities, rural-areas and villages, adding that cultural and religious values sometimes hinder the catch-them-young sports programme like the Gombe grand prix.

On Gara Gombe initiatives, Bako said: “He started well and if he continues, the result will manifest in the near future. These kids want to embrace sports despite the limitations some of them are facing.”

Bako insisted that before the kids could be genuinely attracted to sports, some incentive should be guaranteed such as more local competitions, scholarships, access to urban and model schools where sports facilities are available.

“The Athletics Grand Prix in Gombe State has rekindled interest in the kids, so we the games masters in the schools have to further it in our respective schools for the interest to grow. In our various schools we don’t have sports facilities or tracks where these kids can practice, but with this programme, a lot would be achieved,” Bako further said.

On what would be done to galvanize parents to allow their kids to embrace sports, Bako said: “Incentives are important while good relationship between teachers and their parents will go a long way in making parents understand what their kids are doing aside education. Government should also support the kids in view of ignorance, cultural and religious influences. It was not easy for teachers to bring these kids to the stadium as it took a lot of explanation for parents to allow them. But it is settled now.”

Oh no, Frenkie wants to stay!

Long coveted by Man U’, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, leaves door to Old Trafford summer transfer almost shut

Frenkie de Jong has played down talk of him joining Manchester United in the summer, Matt Verri reports for Evening Standard.

Ahead of the start of the current season, the Barcelona midfielder was linked with a move to Old Trafford for a number of months after Erik ten Hag, his former manager at Ajax, took charge at United.

While Barcelona were keen to sell De Jong due to the financial issues facing the club, and United made it clear that the Dutchman was their top target, the 25-year-old was reluctant to make the switch to England and instead opted to stay at the Camp Nou and fight for his place.

De Jong has been successful in doing that, becoming a regular for Xavi’s side and he has made 24 La Liga appearances this season. He played the full 90 minutes on Sunday as Barcelona beat Real Madrid to go 12 points clear at the top of the table.

Asked after the game whether he was going to be joining United this summer, De Jong made it clear that was not on his mind.

“No, I don’t think so,” De Jong told Ziggo Sport. “You never know of course. But I’m very happy in Barcelona.”

Ahead of the match, he said: “I hope I will play at the new Camp Nou. Barcelona is the club of my dreams, so I plan to stay for many years.”

After missing out on De Jong, United instead made a big-money move for Casemiro and the Brazilian has had a huge impact in his first season at Old Trafford.

Whether the club therefore have the same desire this summer to bring De Jong to the Premier League remains to be seen, but Ten Hag has continued to speak about the “unique quality” of the midfielder and how much admiration he has for him.

“In 2019, there was a lot of fascination with that Ajax team,” Ten Hag said ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Barcelona earlier this season.

“Frenkie brought a lot of that fascination and he has developed over the following years in Spain. He’s a fantastic player and has become even better. Playing out from the back, he always has time.

“It was a pleasure working with him. He would strengthen any squad in the world. He’s got unique quality.”

Elena Rybakina finally captured her first title of the year, and her first WTA 1000 title, at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.

In a major upturn of January’s Australian Open championship match, Rybakina, the world’s Number 10 seed beat Number.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(11), 6-4 in the final, to emerge victorious at the initial championship of 2023’s Sunshine Double.

“Feels amazing,” Rybakina beamed after the encounter.

“It’s been tough but really good two weeks for me here.”

The win is Rybakina’s fourth career WTA singles title; her first since her historic Grand Slam singles title win at last year’s Wimbledon tournament.

Sabalenka entered the tie with a 4-0 meet record over her opponent, in which each of wins against  Rybakina went three sets. However, Rybakina crunched out the first-set tiebreak, then parried a late second-set rally by the World No.2 to capture her first victory over Sabalenka.

“We both had chances [in the first set], but in the end, it went my way,” Rybakina said. “So I think it was important this first set, and then it was a bit easier to start the second with an early break.

“This tiebreak was really epic, I would say, with all these double faults and nerves. So, in the end, it was just focusing on every point and try to fight till the end.”

Palace coup rocks Peseiro Eagles camp

‘Omo Alhaja’, Abdallah  called up to replace George, Shorunmu in Super Eagles Abuja Camp

Finidi George and Ike Shorunmu have been unceremoniously ousted as Super Eagles assistant trainers in manager José Peseiro’s backroom staff in a manner akin to a palace coup.
While Abiodun ‘Omo Alhaja’ Baruwa will replace ousted former Nigeria goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu in manager José Peseiro’s staffing position, Usman Abdallah, his third Assistant Coach moves up one notch in the ranks to take up former international winger George’s place in the ongoing Super Eagles camp in Abuja.
Their ouster of the former assistants was allegedly orchestrated by their Portuguese boss who recommended to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the the should be fired for lack of harmony in the Super Eagles workforce.
Shorunmu, 55, played 36 games for Nigeria from 1992 to 2002 and replaced Aloysius Agu as Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer when Paseiro became Nigeria’s newest Super Eagles manager.
While George who doubles as Enyimba FC manager can now fully rejoin his Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) outfit with his ouster from the Super Eagles assistant trainer position, Shorunmu will remain jobless in the interim.
Sources close to the Super Eagles teams disclosed that the players are largely unfazed by the sudden shake up in the team’s coaching staff with their African Nations Cup qualifying game against the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau at home only days away.
“The players in camp in Abuja are not particularly bothered by this recent development in the camp,” our source confided.
“As you this is Nigeria, so anything is possible. These players are Nigerians too, so they appear to be used to the idea that anything can happen at anytime in the team.
“But from what I have seen and heard so far, the players are just focused on the task of playing Guinea Bissau and getting the results they want”.
Nigeria clashes with Guinea Bissau, Friday, March 24 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja and travels to the Stadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Monday, 27 March to meet the Djurtus in the reverse tie.
