Marco’s Fulham slump to Arsenal defeat

0

Fulham go down at home 0-1 to narrow Arsenal loss

Mikel Arteta and Marco Silva pre-match

By Fulham FC

Fulham were narrowly beaten by league leaders Arsenal at Craven Cottage, with a Leandro Trossard header early in the second-half proving the difference.

Despite missing several key players due to injury, Marco Silva’s side looked more dangerous than their opponents for large spells of the game, and will feel disappointed to come away empty handed.

It was an electric atmosphere inside the Cottage and Fulham more than matched the tempo, starting fast against the table toppers.

Raúl Jiménez – returning from injury after being forced off away at Aston Villa a month ago – took just ten minutes to create problems. It was a defence-splitting pass from Harry Wilson to play the Mexico international in, and the shot had to be deflected wide.

From the resulting corner, Alex Iwobi found Tom Cairney, but the skipper’s first-time volley was blocked. Wilson then found a sight at goal when Sander Berge provided the ball through, but the Wales international’s curling effort went just beyond the far post.

Arsenal thought they had taken the lead when Trossard lofted the ball to Riccardo Calafiori, but the striker had strayed offside moments before his emphatic finish.

Joachim Andersen comes off with a knock

Wilson continued to be the Fulham dangerman after the break, first cutting inside and firing off target, and then volleying over when Iwobi found him in the middle.

But, despite being under the cosh for most of the game, the opener came for the visitors on the hour mark when Trossard tucked away a corner at the back post.

Leno prevented further damage, producing a fine save to divert Bukayo Saka’s effort away from goal when the forward had weaved through the Fulham defence.

The Gunners would have had the perfect chance to double their lead when referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot, but VAR correctly ruled that substitute Kevin had played the ball when challenging Saka on the edge of the box.

Fulham pushed right until the end, with most of the nine additional minutes taking place in the final third, but eventually ran out of time to find an equaliser.

Fulham FC: Leno, Castagne, Andersen (Diop 42′), Cuenca (Bassey 82′), Sessegnon, Berge, Cairney (Smith Rowe 64′), Wilson (Traoré 82′), King (Kevin 63′), Iwobi, Jiménez

Report: Sunderland 2-0 Wolves

0

Sunderland 2 (Mukiele 16, Krejci OG 90+2) Wolves 0

By Wolves FC

Wolves’ frustrating wait for a Premier League win continued as a goal in each half subjected Vitor Pereira’s side to defeat at Sunderland.

After a three-match unbeaten run, the Old Gold felt a corner was being turned, but once Nordri Mukiele’s first-half effort squeezed past Sam Johnstone, they needed to come from behind.

The Old Gold had much of the ball second half, and carved out a series of big chances, but couldn’t find a moment of quality when it mattered, and Ladislav Krejci’s unfortunate own goal late on compounded the misery at the Stadium of the Light.

The fixture was Wolves’ first visit to Sunderland since 2018 and, aside from the opening goal, it was a tight first 45. Both Marhsall Munetsi and Mukiele dragged shots wide for their sides in the opening five minutes.

The Black Cats then thought they’d grabbed the lead on ten minutes. Wilson Isidor thought he’d timed his run off the back of Santiago Bueno to perfection, before rifling into the top corner impressively at Johnstone’s near post, but up went the flag to let Wolves off.

However, they wouldn’t be denied and seven minutes later the hosts were in front. Trai Hume was given time and space to thread a through ball in for Mukiele, and his first time, side-footed effort squeezed between the legs of Johnstone and into the net.

It could have been two soon after as well. Mukiele’s long throws were causing Wolves problems and when Dan Ballard flicked the latest one on to the back post, Hume headed against the outside of the post.

Having ridden the storm, Wolves began to regain a level of control and Jhon Arias’ whipped free-kick from a tight angle was deflected on to the roof of the net by the Black Cats defence. Wolves continued to press as the half wore on but failed to turn possession into shooting positions.

Half-time | Sunderland 1-0 Wolves

The second half was a story of possession, big chances, but more disappointment for the Old Gold, who straight after the break had Joao Gomes drag wide following Munetsi’s chest down – the first of a series of big openings.

Rodrigo Gomes then shot over at the near post, before Munetsi lashed over at the back post, following a Joao Gomes cross. Robin Roefs was then called into action to palm away a Munetsi volley, which he connected well with on the fall.

Jackson Tchatchoua was one of a number of introductions as the half wore on, but when he was sent clean through on 86 minutes, he lacked the composure and scuffed his shot wide.

Both Tolu Arkokodare and Jorgen Strang Larsen had half chances to net themselves late on, but the sucker punch arrived. On the counter attack, Chemsoine Talbi’s cross was inadvertently put into his own net by Krejci, who’d done so well to make up the ground, but wrong-footed Johnstone for the crucial second.

Full-time | Sunderland 2-0 Wolves

Okoye returns into Udinese waiting arms

Set to jump right into action against Cremonese Monday

By Ed Emeanua

Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye returns from his two month unfair betting ban right into the waiting arms of coach Kosta Runjaic.

Okoye is set  to return to active football on October 20, 2025, following completion of a mandated two-month hiatus for betting-related offense.
The Nigeria international is back to training with his club, Udinese, and will be available for selection in their next Serie A game against Cremonese on Monday.
Okoye is also set to return into the waiting arms of Udinese boss Runjaic, who continues to speak of the Nigerian in glowing terms.
In his pre-Cremonese presser Saturday, the Udinese manager pointed  out Okoye’s importance to his team was never in doubt even when officially unavailable.
Excerpts

Runjaic: “We’ve worked on intensity. Mentality crucial”

The boss’s pre-Cremonese conference

Kosta Runjaic held a press conference on Saturday ahead of Udinese’s visit to Cremonese on Monday evening. Here’s what he had to say…
Back from the break
“It’s always good when the players come back from the break with no injuries. What’s more, some players like [Vakoun] Bayo have improved their fitness in the last fortnight and are now fully fit. Overall it’s been good. We’ve made the most of the break to work on intensity and the players are motivated. We want to play well against Cremonese and pick up points, but we know they’re a very solid team who move well as a unit and are dangerous from set-pieces. Their players have a lot more Serie A experience than ours and it’s a difficult ground to play at. They’ve been the surprise package so far this season and were unbeaten until the last round of matches. It’s going to be difficult but we’re ready for it. We’ll need to give our all for 90 minutes if we want to get a result. Our mentality and desire to win the duels will be crucial.”
Okoye and Sava
“[Maduka] Okoye has always been our number one even when he wasn’t available. I’m happy to have him back. I can’t tell you if he’ll play in Cremona but he’s ready. He’s been training well and he’s used this time for some self-reflection. He’s come out of it even stronger. We’re glad he’s available again and we believe in him. [Razvan] Sava has produced some solid performances. He replaced Okoye last year too and it’s a great challenge for him. He too has all my confidence and he’ll get better. The last few months have been an opportunity for him to develop personally and as a goalkeeper.”
Intensity
“There’s always room for improvement, in every area. We want to increase our intensity so that we can press high while staying tight as a unit. We know there are risks to playing this style of football but we want to continue on this road, defending with a high line and pressing with intensity. We want to spend as much time attacking as possible during the game and to do that you need good fitness levels and understanding between the players. We also want to improve our possession play. We need to move the ball more quickly, but against defensive teams you need the right timing and movement to open up spaces. We know we need to up the pace in certain areas but you have to take the opponents into consideration too. When you have less of the ball, you play more on the counter and it looks like you’re moving the ball faster; when you’re up against a team that sits deep you have to wait for the right moment to play the final ball. We’re working on all these things and we can get better. You need ten games before you see the real tempo of a team. We’ve played eight so far so we’re close to getting up to full speed. I’m not worried because I can see how much desire the lads are putting into it. We have lots of new players. [Nicolo] Bertola and [Saba] Goglichidze are new in defence and they played a different way at their previous clubs. [Alessandro] Zanoli is new too but he adapted to our playing style immediately. They’ll all get better with every game.”
Criticism
“Criticism is part of the game. You can’t have football without criticism. I’m very self-critical. We all are. We analyze every mistake much more than people on the outside, leaving out all the emotional factors. When you watch a game five or six times, you consider lots of things. You have to take criticism on the chin, but we’re relaxed and focused. We don’t let ourselves be influenced by it, but you can take input from the outside and use it. We have to be positive too and I often look at the numbers. In the last 10-12 years Udinese haven’t won a lot at home, so I can understand the fans, but two years ago the team only had one home win and last year we had seven. It may not sound like a lot but Udinese have only done better twice in the past 10-12 years. We want our stadium to be a fortress; we want our opponents to feel uncomfortable playing here. We must work hard to get to that point and we need the fans’ support, although that doesn’t mean they can’t criticize us. If we look at Serie A, 70% of teams have spells when they don’t get the results they want. We have to accept that and remember it – both ourselves and our fans. We’re not a top team. If you’re an Udinese fan, you know you have to suffer at times, but you should also know that it’s important to us to play with the right energy and get results at home. We didn’t manage that last time, although we played well. We must keep working to achieve that.”
Iker Bravo
“I don’t know how much he’ll play. We have lots of good, different options in attack. The most important thing is we work well as a team, regardless of who plays. I can’t predict who will play in future. I’ve spoken to Iker. The World Cup was a great experience for him and he came back uninjured. He’s trained with the team two times and he’ll be available on Monday. We’ll see whether or not he plays. It depends on lots of things. It’s the same for other positions where we have a wealth of options. I can only pick 11 starters and five subs so I have to make decisions. Sometimes they work, sometimes you don’t get the desired result, but that’s how it is – it’s a process. Last year Napoli rarely changed their team and I’m sure that there there were people who asked why this or that player wasn’t playing. We have lots of players and we’ve often rotated, but it’s not possible for everyone to play a lot. Those who aren’t playing have to use the time available to improve. For this match I have everyone available except [Thomas] Kristensen.”
Gian Luca Nani’s comments
“I read what Nani had to say in my defence, but he’d told me beforehand. I have a lot of respect for journalists and throughout my career I’ve never had problems with the media. Everyone does their job the best way possible and I don’t judge journalists, since I’m a coach and not one of them. When you coach, you’re judged on your results. Football is very popular in Italy so it’s normal to be in the spotlight and to hear lots of opinions. On the outside you look at the league table and see the games, not the work done on the training ground. But we work hard to grow and improve so that we can get results. You don’t always see that work during the match but the idea is for the work to come out on the pitch. We want to have the chance to win in every game. I’m happy that Gian Luca Nani made those comments. We know we need to do better but we’re not panicking here. We have eight points and could have had nine or ten. That’s a good enough average to stay up comfortably. Everyone here is very conscientious. You can never rest on your laurels in football. You have to work constantly. Winning two games doesn’t mean you’re good enough for Europe. Three years ago Udinese won six games in a row at the start of the season but they ended up with just three points more than we did last season. We have to learn from the criticism, but that doesn’t mean I always agree with it. We want to improve our results at home. We took a first step towards that last season. Now we want more.”

Chelsea captain Reece James made his 200th appearance for the Blues in this afternoon’s commanding win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, and marked the occasion by scoring!

A boyhood Chelsea supporter, James started training with the Blues at just six years old. He progressed through our development centre programme and then moved into the Academy ranks at Cobham, where he enjoyed success.

He lifted the FA Youth Cup as Under-18s captain during the 2017/18 campaign and was named Academy Player of the Season. An impressive loan at Wigan Athletic followed before James was integrated into the first-team set-up by Frank Lampard.

A goal on his Chelsea debut was struck against Grimsby Town, and further highlights from an impressive debut season included a memorable equaliser in a 4-4 draw with Ajax in the Champions League.

Reece James | Best Moments 🌟

As our club captain makes his 200th Chelsea appearance, re-live some of Reece James’s best moments in Blue…

James went from strength to strength during his second campaign in the senior squad, establishing himself as one of the world’s standout full-backs. And he ended the 2020/21 season as a Champions League winner after starring in the final victory over Manchester City in Porto.

Having become an integral figure at Stamford Bridge, James was named captain of our men’s team ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. He has worn the armband ever since and proudly lifted the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup trophies last season.

Congratulations on reaching another Chelsea landmark, Reece!

Taiwo Awoniyi makes cameo Forest start

Ange Postecoglou sacked by Nottingham Forest after 39 days

By Ed Emeanua

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was handed a cameo start at City Ground in “The Reds” 3-0 defeat by visiting Chelsea Saturday.

Joshua Kofi Acheampong headed Chelsea ahead on 49′ only for Pedro Neto to double ‘The Blues’ on 52′ and Reece James adding security on 84′.

For the sixth match this season, another Chelsea or manager was sent packing. Malo Gusto was issued his marching orders-a red card on 87′.

In a match whose major aftermath was the sacking of Manager Ange Postecoglou after only 39 days in charge, the Nigeria international could not have asked for less.

Postecoglou, hired by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis on September 29, now becomes the manager with shortest reign in the Premier League.

He is just a day short of Les Reed’s 40-day stint with Charlton Athletic in 2006 which spanned out between November 14 to December 24.

Awoniyi’s start in Postecoglou’s last match in charge saw the Nigerian prosper to his first 45 minutes of action in the current Premier League season.

Awoniyi gave way at halftime to Igor Jesus a 46th minute substitute for the Super Eagles striker.

The cameo appearance was his first this League season with his only other listing in Forest lineup being on August 17, 2025 against Brentford in which he was on the bench.

Awoniyi’s presence on the pitch on Saturday was eventful for his side as his involvement added his physicality accounting for all the first half spark for Forest.

The Nigerian was freed up by a defensive mix up by Chelsea backline in the early minutes of the tie only to succumb to pressure stretching his short awfully wide of the Chelsea post.

In another superb moment, his pass sent Morgan Gibbs-White clear only for the Forest support striker to blaze his shot into the sky.

Semi Ajayi to play against Birmingham

Nigeria international faces late assessment for away clash

Semi Ajayi will face further assessment before Hull City away clash against Birmingham.

The Nigerian featured for the Super Eagles against Benin’s Cheetahs on Tuesday in an Africa FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Uyo, Nigeria.

Ajayi, who recently returned after a lengthy injury layoff has only played for ‘The Tigers” twice this season, totaling just 98 minutes of top footballing action.

It’s good that he (Semi Ajayi) played, and he played a good game. Nigeria has a very good national team with a lot of very good players on a high level, and I’m happier because of that, so we will see how he feels.”

However, faced with fewer defensive options due to injuries and loss of form, Eric Chelle’s side threw Ajayi into the crucial WCQ in which he excelled.

The Tigers center back played the entire game against Cheetahs for Nigeria in which Super Eagles booked a playoff spot following their 4-0 spanking of Benin’s team.

Ajayi was seen as a standout in Super  Eagles defense in the match in which Nigeria also kept a clean sheet.

Tigers boss Serjev Jakirovic feels the Nigerian merits consideration for the away clash with Birmingham on Saturday.

“It’s good that he (Semi Ajayi) played, and he played a good game,” Jankovic said ahead of his side’s trip.

“Nigeria has a very good national team with a lot of very good players on a high level, and I’m happier because of that, so we will see how he feels.”

Birmingham City have beaten Hull once in their recent 10 league encounters against Hull City (D4 L5) and are without  a victory in their last three games (D1 L2).

Tigers are undefeated in their previous five league visits to Birmingham City (W2 D3), even holding down a clean sheet in their last three visits.

One more victory.

With it, the Nuggets would’ve advanced to last season’s West Finals. But it’s also how the Thunder reached the next stage, defeating that very opponent, en route to winning the title.

Now it’s one last preseason contest for each of these West powerhouses when they clash tonight at Paycom Center in OKC (8 ET, NBA TV).

The league’s most recent MVPs will go head-to-head as the Nuggets and Thunder meet for the first time since the West Semis.

  • Top Dogs: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (32.7 ppg, 6.4 apg in 2024-25) and Nikola Jokić (26.4 ppg, 12.4 rpg in 2023-24) have been the NBA’s best in the last two years. | Loud City: SGA named MVP

  • Bar Raised: The teams around them face similarly-high expectations, as the NBA GM survey for the West gave OKC 87% of 1st-place votes and Denver 53% of 2nd-place

  • Bench Ballers: Depth is a big reason why – Peyton Watson (12 points) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (10) produced off the bench in the Nuggets’ last outing Tuesday against the Bulls

  • Rolling Deep: That same night, the Thunder’s Branden Carlson and Brooks Barnhizer scored 17 and 10 points, respectively, despite not starting in the team’s victory in Milwaukee

DeMar DeRozan, Austin Reaves

The second act of tonight’s NBA TV doubleheader has the Kings paying a visit to their in-state rival Lakers (10:30 ET).

And on Wednesday, much transpired for Sacramento less than a week before the season tips off.

  • Here To Stay: The team signed Keegan Murray to a five-year extension after career highs of 56.6 2P% and 6.7 rpg last season

  • Late Splash: Russell Westbrook signed on a one-year deal, adding a proven scorer and former MVP to the mix. | Chris Haynes breaks down the deal on The Association

  • New Place, Familiar Face: The 18th-year guard still possesses the most all-time triple-doubles (203), including four last season when he averaged 13.3 ppg, 6.1 apg and 4.9 rpg for the Nuggets

  • Bigger Picture: Westbrook’s playmaking and athleticism brings a versatile, veteran presence behind the core of Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan

2. ON LEAGUE PASS: WEMBY SHOWING OUT IN PRESEASON

Victor Wembanyama

Last week, we chronicled Victor Wembanyama’s road back to the court after his second season was cut short due to a blood clot in his shoulder.

From China’s Shaolin Temple, to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas, to one-on-one time with Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, Wemby’s journey was both physical and spiritual as he looked to push the limits of what is possible for him to achieve.

On Oct. 6, he took the court for the Spurs for the first time in 236 days in San Antonio’s preseason opener, flirting with a triple-double (9 pts, 10 reb, 7 ast) in just 16 minutes.

Tonight, Wemby and the Spurs look to close out the preseason with an unblemished 5-0 record when they host the Pacers (8 ET, League Pass).

Before Wemby’s final preparation for his third NBA season, let’s look back at some of his best moments of the preseason.

Want more? We had an all-access pass to Spurs practice last week for a behind-the-scenes look at how they’re preparing for the upcoming season.

In addition to Spurs-Pacers, the final night of the preseason features five more games on League Pass.

  • Nets at Raptors (7 ET): After splitting two games with the Suns in Macao, the Nets return to North America with a stop in Toronto to face Brandon Ingram – who is averaging 20 ppg in the preseason – and the Raptors

  • Wolves at Sixers (7 ET): Philly coach Nick Nurse said there is “some chance” that Joel Embiid plays in the Sixers’ preseason finale against the Wolves. | NBA Insider Chris Haynes shared more on Embiid on The Association

  • Hornets at Knicks (7:30 ET): The Hornets put up an NBA preseason high 145 points in their last game – Wednesday’s win over Memphis that saw LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Miles Bridges each drop 20+ points

  • Grizzlies at Heat (8 ET): Both teams enter the final night of the preseason looking for their first wins of 2025-26

  • Clippers at Warriors (10 ET): LA’s off season additions – John Collins (24 pts, 6 reb), Brook Lopez (16 pts, 4 3pm) and Chris Paul (8 pts, 10 ast) – made big impacts on Wednesday. What can they do for an encore against Golden State?

3. MVP LADDER: 10 PLAYERS TO WATCH

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Steph Curry

Each Friday throughout the season, Shaun Powell will drop his latest Kia MVP Ladder on NBA.com, examining the race for the league’s most coveted individual honor.

Today, with opening night just four days away, Powell will break down 10 candidates on his MVP watch list for the upcoming season. Turn on your push notifications in the NBA App to be first to know when it drops.

The 10 candidates on the watch list are split into two categories — the usual suspects, and the potential surprises. We won’t give away the lists here, but we can offer a few hints.

  • The usual suspects include four players that already have at least one MVP trophy in their case – and have combined to win the award eight times in the last 11 seasons

  • The potential surprises feature some of the league’s rising stars, including a player known for coming up clutch, players featured prominently in Sections 2 & 5 of today’s newsletter, a fixture on the Dunk Score leaderboard, and two players with a 70+ point game

4. ROCKETS, MAGIC, BULLS CLOSE PRESEASONS ON HIGH NOTE

Reed Sheppard, Kristaps Porziņģis

5. CADE & PISTONS TOP WIZARDS, JAZZ CLOSE OUT BLAZERS

Last season, the ascent of the Pistons ran parallel with the leap made by Cade Cunningham.

As Detroit made a 30-win jump and ended a five-year Playoff drought, Cade earned his first All-Star and All-NBA selections in his fourth season.

With Detroit looking to climb higher in 2025-26, Cunningham is looking to lead the way. And his preseason performances – averaging 20.7 ppg and 7.3 apg on 62.9% FG, 58.3% 3P, 91.7% FT shooting following Thursday’s preseason finale – show he’s ready to go.

Pistons 119, Wizards 98: Cunningham (16 pts, 12 ast, 3 stl) and Jalen Duren (20 pts, 6 reb, 3 blk) combined for 36 points to power the Pistons over the Wizards, who got a combined 37 points from Kyshawn George and CJ McCollum in the loss. | Recap

  • The Turning Point: After Washington overcame a 16-point deficit to take a one-point lead with 7:01 left in the 3rd quarter, Detroit responded with a 10-0 run to regain control and outscored the Wizards 50-28 over the game’s final 19 minutes

  • Cade Does It All: From finishing the nasty reverse layup off the drive (⬆️), to floating up the pinpoint alley-oop dime to Duren off the pick-and-roll, to protecting the rim with an emphatic swat, Cade was in his bag on Thursday

Nigeria winger is injury doubt for Arsenal clash

By Ed Emeanua

Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze is a major injury doubt for Saturday’s clash with Arsenal, even as Cottagers boss Marco Silva is upbeat despite likely depletion of his team by injuries.

Silva’s Fulham hosts league table-toppers Arsenal amidst a rising injury problem at Craven Cottage likely to rule out six major players.

Chukwueze sustained a calf injury on international duty with Nigeria against Benin and is among Silva’s soldiers likely to be sidelined against Mikel Arteta’s “Gunners”.

Saša Lukić, Rodrigo Muniz and Antonee Robinson will all be unavailable, but Chukwueze, Raúl Jiménez and Kenny Tete are doubts for Saturday’s fixture in south-west London.

“It’s the reality for us. We cannot change it,” Silva stated in his presser ahead of the Arsenal game.

“It’s up to us, our medical staff and our rehabilitation group to get them ready as quickly as they can because we need them.

“If you have all your players available, you’re going to be stronger. If you don’t have key players – not just one or two – you’re not at the same level. But it’s not going to be an excuse for us. We have to move on and we have to go.

“Of course, we cannot hide. When we’re talking about a player like Robinson, for example, you know the impact that he’s had in the last two or three seasons in all aspects of the game.

Marco Silva and Mikel Arteta pre-match at the Cottage

“Kenny is a key player for us, as you know. Every time he’s ready and at his best, he’s a key player in the way we want to play. And Saša Lukić has been one of the best players so far in the beginning of the season for us.

“I think we’re at a moment in the season where things are coming all at the same time. It is what it is.

“What I can say about Arsenal is that they have a very, very good squad. I think it’s shown in the way they’ve started the season and the way they’ve been playing.

“But the reality is that we have been very tough for Arsenal to play against and we want to show up and show that we are capable of competing, even without five or six players that have been very important for us.

“The reality is that before we started getting results against them, the story of Fulham Football Club for probably the last 10 or 15 years was that almost all the games were wins for Arsenal.

“In the last four games, for example, you see a really competitive side against them. It’s a different moment of the season for us in terms of not having our full capacity, but we want to compete at our best level.

“We don’t want to find excuses. With our fans, we need them definitely at their top level too because in these types of moments, we have to show the togetherness and connection even more.

“The players are going to need the 12th player at Craven Cottage.”

Brentford reviewed players’ form on international duty with Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka getting special rave after netting his second Super Eagles goal on Tuesday in Uyo.

On its website, ‘The Bees’ devoted time to celebrate the internationals who shone for country on national team assignments.

Mikkel Damsgaard provided a goal and an assist as Denmark defeated Greece 3-1; Nathan Collins and Caoimhín Kelleher picked up two further Republic of Ireland caps, with the latter saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty; Jordan Henderson helps England book their place at next summer’s World Cup with a 5-0 victory in Latvia.

Denmark remain top of Group C on goal difference with two games left to play in the November international break.

Rasmus Højlund capitalized on a defensive mistake to put Brian Riemer’s side in front midway through the half, before Damsgaard’s 40th-minute corner was headed home by Joachim Andersen.

A minute later, the Bees midfielder netted his sixth goal for his country, on what was his 36th appearance for the senior side.

Scotland, who beat Belarus 2-1 on the same day in the absence of Aaron Hickey, join Denmark on 10 points, but have an inferior goal difference, with both sides guaranteed at least a play-off place.

Caoimhín Kelleher‘s remarkable penalty record grabbed further headlines as he denied Cristiano Ronaldo from the spot for the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

The former Liverpool stopper’s last three penalty saves have come against Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Kylian Mbappé.

Portugal did manage to snatch a 1-0 win through a stoppage-time header from Rúben Neves.

Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side boosted their hopes of qualifying on Tuesday after defeating 10-man Armenia by the same scoreline in Dublin courtesy of Evan Ferguson’s second-half goal.

Nathan Collins captained the Boys in Green in both fixtures, with the Brentford duo playing every minute across the October international break.

England secured their place at next summer’s World Cup with a 5-0 victory at Latvia, with Jordan Henderson featuring from the bench to pick up cap number 87.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will round off their successful qualifying campaign with games against Serbia and Albania.

Norway continued their 100 per cent record in qualifying with a 5-0 win against Israel, with Kristoffer Ajer playing the full 90 minutes at Ullevaal Stadion.

They top Group I with six wins from six and are three points ahead of second-place Italy, who they face away from home next month.

Ajer was an unused substitute in Norway’s second fixture of the October break, which was a 1-1 draw in an international friendly against New Zealand.

It was also a successful October for Ukraine, who picked up two victories: a 2-1 success against Azerbaijan before winning 5-3 at Iceland.

Yehor Yarmoliuk started the first of those, with Hákon Valdimarsson not featuring in the defeat to Ukraine or Iceland’s 2-2 draw against France on Monday evening.

Kevin Schade was called up to Germany as a late addition but did not feature in the matchday squad for either of their wins, which came at home to Luxembourg and away at Northern Ireland.

In African qualifying, Frank Onyeka came off the bench to score a superb volley in Nigeria’s 4-0 win against Benin, securing the Super Eagles a spot in the play-offs for the World Cup.

Onyeka did not feature in Nigeria’s 2-1 win against Lesotho four days earlier, but Benjamin Fredrick started both games.

Elsewhere, Dango Ouattara started as Burkina Faso defeated Ethiopia 3-1 on Sunday thanks to a Pierre Landry Kaboré hat-trick.

Jamaica, having lost 2-0 to Curaçao in their first game, returned to the top of CONCACAF Group B qualifying with a 4-0 victory against Bermuda, with Ethan Pinnock playing the duration of both matches.

Ji-soo Kim was an unused substitute for South Korea in a 2-0 international friendly win against Paraguay.

Antoni Milambo sustained an ACL injury while away with Netherlands Under-21s and will undergo surgery, with the midfielder then set to be in rehabilitation for the remainder of the season.

Turkey U21s defeated Lithuania 2-0 before drawing 1-1 at Hungary, with Yunus Emre Konak featuring in the first of those UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifiers from the bench.

Brentford Under-18s midfielder Luka Bentt started for Belgium U19 in a 4-1 defeat against England before playing the second half of a 2-2 draw against USA.
