The Athletics Federation of Nigerian, AFN, has named 42 athletes to compete for honors at the combined 4th African U-18 Championships and the 15th African U-20 championships scheduled to start this weekend in Ndola, Zambia.

The list is made up of 23 U-18 girls and boys as well as 19 U-20 men and women.

Nigeria U-20 women’s record holder, Tima Godbless is spearheading the country’s challenge for podium places in the U-20 category while National Sports Festival 100m and 200m silver medalist, Faith Okwose tops the list of 23 U-18 athletes listed for the Championships.

Some others listed in the U-18 category are Ewa Peace, Eyakpoeyan Justina Tiana, Saibu Yetunde Olayinka, Israel Okon Sunday, Monday Ebuka, Francis James, Musa Jimoh, Justin Osigwe, and Abujei Chinedu.

For the U-20, Sule Rejoice Adijatu, Oke Opeyemi Deborah, Usenbor Osaretin Joy, Bright Ada Princess, Ajayi Kanyinsola, Adebisi Musbau, Musa Nurain Kola, Unorji Kingsley Emeka, and Caleb Joshua, also made the team.

AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku says the federation has selected the best athletes that will do Nigeria proud in Ndola and to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors who launched their way to stardom at the Championships.

‘The AFN has selected the best crop of young athletes who will not only be medal contenders in Ndola, but will grow to become one of the best in their events,’’ Onikeku, a former Nigeria international athlete, said.

Onikeku revealed that the last edition of the combined championships held four years ago in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, produced stars who have grown to become Nigeria and African record holders today.

‘’Enoch Adegoke cut his teeth at this championships. He ran a 10.29 Championships record in the 100m in Ivory Coast four years ago and two years after that, he became the first Nigerian man to run in the final of the Olympics,’’ Onikeku who also revealed that Favour Ofili sped to fame with double championships records in Ivory Coast, said.

‘‘Favour was exceptional in Ivory Coast, setting two Championships records in the 200m (23.38) and 400m (52.28) events in the U-18 category. Today she is the African record holder in the 200m indoors and Nigeria’s 200m record holder outdoor.

‘‘Rosemary Chukwuma successfully completed a sprint double in Ivory Coast in the U-20 category and she is today, the fastest over the two events so far this year.

‘’The Javelin thrower set a championships record of 74.71m to win the gold and he is today the Nigerian record holder in the event after breaking Pius Bazighe’s over two decades record.’’

The AFN Technical Director is confident the athletes going to Ndola to compete are as good as those who went to Ivory four years ago and urged Nigerians to expect the birth of a new generation of superstars.

Meanwhile, Mrs Rosa Collins, a former Nigeria and African triple jump champion and record holder, who is also the second Vice President of the AFN, is the leader of delegation.

Gusau denies meeting with norther referees

‘This report is most uncharitable’ he fumes

By Rasheed Adewuyi

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has denied a report going round the social media that he has held a meeting with football referees from the northern part of Nigeria ahead of upcoming elections into the Nigeria Referees Association.

“This report is most uncharitable because I was nowhere near the meeting that was said to have been held in Kano by the referees. I am the president of Nigeria Football and the father of all, and cannot engage in reductionism. If there has been any interaction at all with referees, it has been with every one of them from across the length and breadth of the country, and with the noble intention of charging them to do their job professionally and to be morally upright in the discharge of their duties,” Gusau fumes.

“I have no interest whatsoever in who becomes the President of the referees as long as the person is the choice of the majority. I understand that the referees from the northern zone had a similar meeting in Kano before the NRA elections in 2019. It is befuddling that so much ado is being made of their recent meeting.”

Gusau reiterated that referees are a key component of the process in the strategy to reposition the Nigeria League, and their fair, professional and diligent performances will also go a long way in getting Nigerian arbiters back into reckoning for consideration for continental and global championships.

“My charge to all Nigerian referees is to be upright and professional in the discharge of their duties in the League, and the same for those who get appointments for continental events and global championship qualifiers. We have the personnel with the capacity and sagacity to do much better than we are doing now in the refereeing world. It is all about being more diligent, working harder and working right, and being above board.”

De La Hoya would’ve knocked out Stone Cold

Oscar De La Hoya Would Have Gone To WWE, Says He Could Have Knocked Out Steve Austin

Oscar De La Hoya speaking

Oscar De La Hoya is one of the most famous names in the world of boxing, in a new interview with Bally Sports, De La Hoya was asked about the possibility of stepping into a WWE ring, especially in his heyday of the late 1990s, Ross W Berman IV writes for Wrestling INC.

“It was never put in front of me but I would’ve done it. Why not?” De La Hoya said. “Knock out ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin? That would’ve been fun.”

According to De La Hoya, he didn’t just grow up a fan of professional wrestling but remains a fan to this day.

“I’m a huge fan of any combat sport,” De La Hoya said, noting that he not only enjoys WWE, but UFC as well. “Yeah, anything combat, I’m all for it. It’s in my blood.”

De La Hoya says that he feels a certain kinship with all athletes.

“I respect every athlete [that] steps in whether it’s an octagon or a squared circle.”

De La Hoya’s respect for the UFC comes despite once challenging UFC president Dana White to a fight in 2018, asking for a three-round exhibition fight against the fighting impresario. De La Hoya’s love of combat is likely invigorated by the fact that WWE and UFC will operate under the same corporate umbrella, as they are set to be merged into a new company under UFC parent company Endeavor in a $21 billion deal that was made public during the weekend of WrestleMania 39 at the beginning of the month.

Chelsea topples Man Utd in Osimhen chase

Uses Hakim Ziyech as major  trump card to force Napoli’s hands in the move for the Nigeria forward

Chelsea appears set to topple Manchester United in the chase of wantaway Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, as Gli Azzurri (The Blues)  interest to sign Hakim Ziyech could now be used to push across the transfer to Stanford Bridge, the Daily Mirror reports.

The Blues plans to shed close to 10 players this summer and have already signaled that Morocco winger Ziyech is also up for sale. Premier League rivals Chelsea and Man United are now set to for a major head-to-head battle to sign the Nigeria international this summer, reports Metro News UK.

The 30-year-old thrived in four glorious terms at Ajax before a £33m transfer brought him to Stamford Bridge in 2020 but has failed to match his value in England.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter was hellbent on dispatching Ziyech on loan to Ligue 1 last January, however, a deadline-day transfer to Paris Saint-Germain was derailed by paperwork log jams.

Chelsea feels Osimhen could be the solution for their poor goals hurl, having depended on Kai Havertz for much of the season following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Italy on loan in 2022.

The 24-year-old Osimhen is having a dream season in Naples, scoring 26 times in 31 appearances to propel Luciano Spalletti’s to a sumptuous 14 points lead ahead of all Serie A title contenders.

Chelsea contracted former skipper of Arsenal Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on deadline-day but his west London sojourn has been calamitous and all parties cannot wait to severe the knots at the end of the season.

However, Chelsea are up for fierce challenge from Manchester United in the sprint to sign Osimhen, with United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, said to be very focus driven to pluck the goalscorer over to Old Trafford.

United are knee-deep in the market melee for a new striker having let go Cristiano Ronaldo earlier in the season and playing Burnley loan acquisition Wout Weghorst as a top 9 in the second-half of the current season.

Chelsea are getting set for a summer off-loading of redundant players mainly to recover some of the £600m owner, Todd Boehly, has invested on new deals, but equally due to the agreement within the club that several players on the club’s payroll has made it untenable for the side to flourish this term.

The west London club have dipped into the tail-end of the English League table and were eliminated from the Champions League last week by Real Madrid.

On the other hand, Osimhen has been one of the in-form players in the world this term, though his efforts could not deter Napoli from also getting eliminated from the Champions League by Serie A rivals AC Milan.

Given the huge interest in Osimhen, it is believed that Napoli will want a fee of more than £100m to part ways with the striker this summer.

Romelu Lukaku’s career in grave danger

Rejected Chelsea forward likely to be dumped by Inter Milan

Lukaku double at Empoli ends Inter's winless run | SuperSportLukaku double at Empoli ends Inter’s winless run last weekend

By Ed Emeanua

Romelu Lukaku’s once vibrant football career is in serious danger as both Chelsea and Inter Milan dillydally over the Belgian forward’s likely destination next season.

Mauricio Pochettino is the prime target for the Chelsea job, but his coming could portend very bad news for Romelu Lukaku’s center forward position at Stamford Bridge. The Argentinian tactitician is being rumored to likely prefer Armando Broja, 21, who missed out on the second half of the season to a knee problem, in the central position role. Broja had enough time to put on show the type of physicality that Chelsea lacks up front before his injury.

Meanwhile, Lukaku has again made it crystal clear to Chelsea that he wants to stay put at Inter Milan in extension of his current loan spell in Italy, Metro News UK reports.

However, Inter have equally shown that they have no intentions to hand the forward a permanent transfer to Italy, with Inter Milan’s CEO, Giuseppe Marotta, alleging last month that the forward is ‘not at his best or the player we got to see in years gone by’.

The 29-year-old forward was handed to Inter on loan last summer following his inability to make an impression at Stamford Bridge in his first season at Chelsea after his £97.5 million transfer to West London in 2021.

However, Lukaku has been limited by injury in Italy this season and has only started 13 Serie A matches so far.

However, the player maintains his intention to stay at Inter once his loan spell ends at the end of the season. ‘’I have an excellent relationship with the fans and I’ve always tried to give everything for Inter because it gave me the opportunity to win two years ago,’’ Lukaku said after scoring twice in Inter’s 3-0 win against Empoli on Sunday.

‘This club has allowed me to become who I am today.’’ When asked whether he intends to remain at Inter, Lukaku said: ‘‘Yes, but guys you have to pay attention to those things because the others [talk]. My goal is to give my best for Inter.’’

Broja’s speed was also well demonstrated and appreciated. Though the Albanian forward managed to score only once in 294 minutes of football he brings quite a new dimension to the attacking options at Stamford Bridge with his head-on style of play.

Broja has just 17 senior league goals to his name at this stage of his career however, Harry Kane also tallied only 17 goals to his name before his first full season in the Premier League.

Another advantage for Broja is that Kane, who went on to score volumes of goals for Tottenham so flourished under Pochettino’s tutelage at White Hart’s Lane Pochettino, and when it comes to handing out tryouts to young players in a new environments, no coach does it better than the former Paris Saint Germain boss.

In the absence of a traditional No. 9 for most of the season largely out of distrust for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang central position abilities, it could be reasonable to hint that Broja will be given an huge chance to make a claim for the Chelsea striker’s role and by all considerations, Pochettino is the right coach to do just that.

Julian Nagelsmann dumps Chelsea job offer

Now tipped to coach Tottenham Hotspurs

5 contenders to replace Graham Potter as Chelsea head coachMauricio Pochettino (Left) and Julian Nagelsmann (Right)

By Ed Emeanua

Julian Nagelsmann has declined offers to become the next manager of Chelsea FC serious following serious concerns over the recruitment process in the West London club, according to the Daily Mail.

The German trainer was a major candidate to take the place of sacked Graham Potter at Chelsea before pulling out of the contention to for the Blues’ next managerial role.

Earlier reports from football.london this month indicated that the former Bayern Munich boss was in prime position to take the place of Potter and had held talks with the Blues’ representatives.

Nagelsmann has already distanced himself from the consideration for the role following having deep issues with Chelsea’s recruitment process, claims the Daily Mail.

The west London outfit have been forced to confine their consideration to only three contenders with Ange Postecoglou now replacing the German tactician, in addition to Mauricio Pochettino and Burnely manager Vincent Kompany in the final round of talks.

According to football.london, Chelsea have held productive discussions with Pochettino concerning replacing Potter. The West Londoners management are big fans of the former Tottenham Hotspur boss, 51, whose qualities and experience also enders him to the players at Stamford Bridge, who are willing to work with him.

The Daily Mail hints that Nagelsmann was convinced that the Chelsea role was his and that talks were only a routine. However, doubts started to escalate after Chelsea held series of discussions with Pochettino and Kompany over consideration for the same role.

The former Bayern boss chose to withdraw from further talks last Friday and has now taken prime position to coach the Spurs following Antonio Conte’s sacking. Nagelsmann also had ‘serious concerns’ over the Blues’ £600million recruitment drive on new signings in the last two transfer windows.

Nuhu expects Nigeria’s first sub-30′ race run

Athletics distance coach believes this is the year for Nigeria’s swan-song in Men’s distance running

2022 Okpekpe Road Receives Elite Label From World Athletics – Channels Television

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Vintage distance running coach, Stephen Nuhu says he expects the first ever sub-30 minutes run for men at the ninth Okpekpe international 10km road race next month in Okpekpe, Edo state.

Nuhu, who is in Pankshin, one of the coldest cities in Plateau state preparing the athletes for the World Athletics gold label race says performances in training have convinced him this will be the year Nigerians will see a sub-30 minutes run for the men.

”We are in Pankshin preparing for next month’s Okpekpe international 10km road race and I can tell you we are ready to break the 30 minutes barrier for men and 34 minutes for women,” said Nuhu.

Nuhu is not only encouraged by the performances in training, but also on how the athletes have fared in recent competitions they have participated in and around Nigeria, especially the first National Cross Country race in February.

‘The cross country race has helped in the training of the athletes and some of the athletes who took part in the race in Jos have been registered for the Okpekpe race,” he revealed.

Plateau state duo of Kefar Williams and Blessing Solomon made history as the first winners of the first National Cross Country race held at the Rhino Golf Course in Jos last February.

Kefar ran 31:38.30 to win the race ahead of 2022 National 3000m steeplechase champion, Stephen Joshua (31:51.69). and Emmanuel Gwang (32:01.77). who came second and third respectively.

Nuhu is confident that any or all of the trio who made it to the podium in Jos, running through that barriers. can run inside 30 minutes in Okpekpe.

”Running 31 minutes in a cross country race is not easy and when they run on an almost even surface, you can expect a faster time,” said the coach.

Nuhu also pointed to the performances of the athletes at the eighth edition of the race in 2022 as another source for encouragement.

”Last year, Ismail Sadjo ran 31:12 to come in first as the first Nigerian man. In fact two of them ran inside 31.20 at the race, and this is a marked improvement from what we have been seeing in previous editions. This has given me the confidence that this year will witness the breaking of that 30-minutes barrier which can put them on the podium,” he said.

Last year Ethiopia’s Yasin Haji ran 29:05 to win the men’s race while the women’s race was won by Anchinalu Dessie, also of Ethiopia who ran 33.09.

Okpekpe road race is the first World Athletics label road race in West Africa and the first 10km road race in Nigerian to be awarded a gold label status.

Fresh from the partial reinstatement of 15 points deduction by the Italian FA following their appeal, Juventus hoped to catchup on runaway Serie A leaders, SSC Napoli at their Allianz Stadium on Sunday as the visitors pushed to increase their hold on winning a title that has eluded The Parthenopeans for decades.

Both sides held tight in midfield as neither wanted to yield ground nor be guilty for conceding the first goal. Napoli’s dangerman, Victor Osimhen in particular enjoyed the tightest of attention of all with at least two Fidanzata d’Italia (The Girlfriend of Italy) players provided enough shadow to keep him in check at all times.

Yet, it was Napoli that won the first corner kick in the fifth minute. Though nothing came out of it, Gli Azzurri (The Blues) also enjoyed most of the possession in the first half, with the home side often relying mostly on counter attacks hoping to catch the league leaders off guard.

The first half soon drew to a close with no side taking the lead. The second half started just like the first with Napoli again seizing the initiative. On 55′, Osimhen won the ball off Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli, locating his partner Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who was lurking at the edge of the box, but the Georgian’s shot flew over the bar.

Napoli continued to foray on in pack. On 71′, the Napoli striker managed to wriggle into space in the box and but his shot took a deflection and clipped the outside of the post. From the resulting corner, Osimhen rose brilliantly to meet to meet the ball but heads straight at Szczesny who in turn cuddles the ball gingerly like a newborn baby. Napoli are now roaring on.

Three minutes later, Giovanni Di Lorenzo whipped a superb pass around the corner and into the Osimhen’s path allowing the Napoli striker to take a first time shot, but his effort sailed over the bar.

When you spurn your chances in football, it will often come back to  bite you. In a swift counter in the 82nd minute, Angel Di Maria went scampering after a through ball and dribbles into the box before slotting a finish past Meret. VAR however ruled that Arkadiusz Milik on Stanislav Lobotka in the build-up.

The game became a ding dong affair as both sides tried to win it. Then, the dramatic end. Elif Elmas clipped the ball to the back post and Giacomo Raspadori was there alone with all the time and space to fire a volley under Szczesny and into the net to win it for Napoli.

Porsche Grand Prix: Iga Swiatek wins

Successfully defends title with win over Aryna Sabalenka

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has won her second consecutive Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title, Heinrich Griessel reports for Planet Sport.

Iga Swiatek claimed the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title for a second consecutive year, after Carlos Alcaraz cruised into the Barcelona Open final.

Back on her favored clay after a short break to heal a rib problem, the world number one produced a statement week, culminating in a 6-3 6-4 victory over her closest rival, Aryna Sabalenka.

It was a close battle throughout but Swiatek was rock solid in the big moments and saved the only break point she faced.

A break for 5-3 in the opening set put the Pole into the lead and she broke Sabalenka again to start the second before holding confidently to the finish line.

It was a second title of the season for Swiatek, who has seen her lead at the top of the rankings cut, and she said in the on-court ceremony: “I’m so excited. You could see after the match point.

“Congrats Aryna for everything, you’ve had such an amazing season. I’m really happy that we’re so consistent and can play so many amazing matches together because I think fans are enjoying it.”

Swiatek held her trophy aloft before driving her real prize, a new Porsche, around the court.

Australian Open champion Sabalenka could not hide her disappointment after losing in the final for a third straight year – she was beaten by Ashleigh Barty in 2021.

After congratulating Swiatek, the Belarusian said: “Can we make a deal that if I make another final I just get an extra car? I really enjoy playing here – not that much right now because I lost in a third final, it hurts. But it’s a great tournament. I will keep coming back until I get the car.”

Earlier, Carlos Alcaraz beat Dan Evans 6-2 6-2 in the Barcelona Open semi-finals.

The Spanish top seed is still yet to drop a set in the tournament after despatching the British number two in an hour and 21 minutes.

The 19-year-old world number two will face Stefanos Tsitsipas after he beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in three sets, 6-4 5-7 6-3, in the other semi.

The current US Open champion is now eyeing a third title this season to go with his Buenos Aires and Indian Wells victories.
