Manchester United gets $6.2B final bid

Qatari Banker Sheikh Jassim’s monumental last offer

Qatari and British billionaires, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Jim Ratcliffe made their third and last bids to acquire Manchester United on Friday-a monumental $6.2 billion deal-reports claim.

Sheikh Hamad Al Thani and Sir Ratcliffe tendered revised offers of their two earlier bids for the English Premier League (EPL) giants yesterday. The Billionaires are embroiled in a bidding war following their emergence as the leading competitors to purchase the EPL side from current owners, the Glazer family.

The Glazers, owners of the club since 2005, must now make a crucial choice whether to sell all 69 per cent shareholding of the club or become a minority investor in the business.

Friday’s cutoff point for the third round of bids was put in place at 10pm UK (5pm ET), with the two primary groups and the bulk of collective bidders-Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe-tendering their deals to Raine Group before the deadline. Whereas Sheikh Jassim’s newest deal is said to be above £5 billion ($6.2 billion), the scale of Ratcliffe’s revised offer is yet to be disclosed at the close of Friday’s deadline for the third round of bidding at 2100 GMT.

Reports claim that Sheikh Jassim’s offer for total control of Manchester United includes the commitment of noteworthy supplemental provision for transfers and infrastructure. The investment would involve either demolishing the club’s archaic Old Trafford stadium or erect a new one, in line with with modernizing the club’s practice amenities.

Manchester United takeover: Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe submit revised bids

Sheikh Jassim’s offer also commits to payoff the club’s $620 million debt. INEOS chemical company owner Ratcliffe, a boyhood Old Trafford fan who fell short in his effort to purchase Chelsea last year, intends to buy a managing holdup in United worth over 50 percent, according to reports.

This proposal allows United’s executive co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to continue as owners with a 20 percent investment, which troubles a section of United’s fanbase who are fatigued by the Americans’ controversial rule. The Glazers reports say, demand a world record £6 billion payment for United before agreeing to let go their ownership of the club, heightening the likelihood they may not welcome either Sheikh Jassim’s deal or Ratcliffe’s proposal.

Very unpopular among United’s fans from the time they yoked down United with debt in a £790 million leveraged ownership in 2005, the Glazers seemed prepared to offload their investment at a huge profit when they initially opened the door to outside investors in November.

But, Elliot Investment Management and The Carlyle Group are among the special equity firms in the market for a minority stake that could allow the Glazers to keep their control and provide the money for investment in the club’s infrastructure.

Avram and Joel Glazer are said to be keen to hold on to their investments in Old Trafford, but siblings and codirectors Kevin, Bryan and Edward Glazer and Darcie Glazer Kassewitz are open to selling their claims.

Sheikh Jassim’s third bid through his Nine Two Foundation is reported to be more than £5billion ($6.3bn) and will give him total ownership of United. Sources close to the Qatari Banker claim it will also be his final bid and, if it sails through, it would be a world-record amount paid for a sporting charter, shading the $4.65billion (£3.7bn) paid by the Walton-Penner family for the Denver Broncos in the NFL in August.

Sheikh Jassim, the Qatari royal who is the son of the former prime minister and chairman of QIB (Qatar Islamic Bank), is reported to be a lifelong Manchester United fan.

Golden Eaglets prepare for Zambia game

Golden Eaglets arrive in Algeria ahead Under-17 AFCON - News ...

Five-time world champions Nigeria will begin her quest for honors at this year’s Africa U-17 Cup of Nations when they take on their Zambian counterparts in the Algerian city of Constantine on Sunday evening.

The Golden Eaglets flew into Constantine on Tuesday night, after MRI tests conducted on the 26 players in Algiers following their arrival in the North African country from Egypt.

Nigeria, two-time winners of the continental championship, have won the world titles in 1985 (China), 1993 (Japan), 2007 (Korea Republic), 2013 (United Arab Emirates) and 2015 (Chile).

The Confederation of African Football launched the U-17 event as a tournament in Mali in 1995, with the Golden Eaglets finishing behind rivals Black Starlets of Ghana. The Eaglets did not qualify for the 1997 finals, and lost out in the group phase in Guinea in 1999.

Nigeria were champions of the 4th CAF U-17 Tournament in Seychelles in 2001, easily defeating Burkina Faso 3-0 in Victoria. The Golden Eaglets won again in Togo in 2015, and went on to win the FIFA World Cup in Korea Republic.

The last time the Golden Eaglets met Zambia at this level was in 2015 in Niger Republic, when Nigeria triumphed 3-1 in Niamey with two of the goals from Victor Osimhen, who would go on to become the record goalscorer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup (with 10 goals), allowing Nigeria to win her fifth global title in Chile later that year. Interestingly, Zambia’s lone goal in the match was scored by Patson Daka, who would go on to dazzle at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations hosted and won by his country two years later.

For this 14th edition of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, the Eaglets will also play Morocco and South Africa in Group B. Hosts Algeria will tackle Senegal, Congo and Somalia in Group A, while Cameroon duel with Mali, Burkina Faso and South Sudan in Group C.

The four top-placed teams at the end of the tournament will fly Africa’s flag at this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup.

FIFA U-20 World Cup: Ambassador confident of his country’s readiness to host the world

The Ambassador of Argentina to Nigeria, His Excellency Alejandro Herrero on Friday expressed confidence that his country will organize an excellent FIFA U-20 World Cup finals despite receiving the hosting right less than five weeks to the championship.

“We are a footballing country with citizens who are very passionate about the game, and despite the late award of hosting rights, we will give it everything we have to deliver a smooth and superb tournament. Nigeria is one of the qualified teams and we must attend to the visa requirements of the NFF delegation promptly and as within the regulations,” His Excellency Herrero told a delegation of NFF chieftains led by the President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau on Friday in Abuja.

FIFA formally announced on 17 April that the finals, earlier billed to be staged in Indonesia, had been moved to Argentina, with the same competition period maintained.

Earlier, the NFF President had commended Herrero and his team for receiving the NFF team at short notice, and stated that Nigeria would be looking forward to a championship in which to make history.

“Our two senior teams have enjoyed close contests at the FIFA World Cup level so many times, but I remember that at U-20 level, we met in the Final in 2005, which Argentina won by a slim 2-1 margin in The Netherlands. This time, we want to go all the way and we believe Argentina will provide that warm and cordial environment to achieve our target,” Alhaji Gusau said at the occasion.

“I know Argentina is a great football nation and that she is fully aware of what is required before accepting the hosting right. Every football fan all over the world wants to be in Argentina because of the country’s pedigree. It will be an interesting FIFA U-20 World Cup for all teams including Nigeria.”

Argentina’s global icon Lionel Messi scored both goals (both from the penalty spot) when they edged the Flying Eagles 2-1 in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Final in Utrecht in 2005 – one of the six times that the South American nation has won the championship. Argentina also hosted the finals in 2001.

This year’s tournament will see the Argies compete in Group A, alongside Uzbekistan, Guatemala, and New Zealand, while Nigeria trade tackles with Italy, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic, in Group D. The Flying Eagles will play their first two matches (against Dominican Republic and Italy) in Mendoza, before flying to La Plata to play Brazil on 27 May.

La Plata, Santiago del Estero, San Juan and Mendoza are the four host cities for the 24-nation championship.

Also present at the occasion were the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi; Deputy Consul Nicolas Perazzo; NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire; NFF’s Chief Protocol Officer, Emmanuel Ayanbunmi; Consular Official, Ms. Ifesinachi Odeh, and Special Assistant to NFF President, Abubakar Barde.

Joshua versus Wilder: “It’s Happening”

Anthony Joshua Confirms He’s ‘Throwing Down’ Against Wilder

Joshua returned to the ring at the start of April against American Jermaine Franklin. Although he got the victory, some pundits were underwhelmed by his performance after hoping to see a return to the aggressive ‘AJ’ style that fans saw earlier in his career.

After the Franklin fight, the former champion announced he wanted to be back in the ring within 12 weeks, with most tipping him to face former foe Dillian Whyte.

Those plans were thrown into doubt when he released a post saying his next fight wouldn’t be until December, with most assuming talks for a clash with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ were well under way – and that certainly appears to be the case now.

Wilder had been expected to face Andy Ruiz Jr after knocking out Robert Helenius in the first round back in October. The WBC ordered the fight as a final eliminator for a shot at Fury’s belt, but negotiations dragged on and then seemingly fizzled out.

Mayweather, McGregor, Joshua: Highest-paid boxers

Fury, Tyson are among the 25 highest-paid boxers per punch since 2010 revealed in fascinating new study

A list of boxing’s earnings per punch has been released, and it makes for fascinating viewing, Alex Gendler Smith reports for GIVEMESPORT.

Betsperts have published a list of boxers and the amount they earn per punch, calculating how much they made from fights and how many punches they threw. They have used boxing information since 2010 and the list covers fights that have over one million buys worldwide.

Manny Pacquiao is the man with the most punches landed since 2010. However, he only finds himself in seventh place on the list for money earned per punch, earning just over £96,000 for every punch he landed.

The highest placed Brit on the list is not Tyson Fury, who finds himself in 22nd, earning £36,909 per punch. It is in fact Anthony Joshua who leads the way for the British boxers, earning a staggering £208,743 for each one of his 443 punches landed since 2010.

What boxer has earned the most money per punch since 2010?

Unsurprisingly, Floyd Mayweather Jr has earned the most money across the 13 years, just under £450 million, nearly double that of anybody else. He has also earned the most per punch, cashing in nearly £240,000 every time he hits the opponent.

‘Money’ Mayweather has a 50-0-0 record and has fought Pacquiao and Conor McGregor. Interestingly, McGregor finds himself second in the list after his one and only fight against the American, taking away £225,160 per punch he landed on his opponent that day.

The other three fighters who have earned over £100,000 per punch are Mike Tyson (£124.3k), Wladimir Klitschko (£115.2k) and Alexander Povetkin (£106.3k).

Victor Ortiz has landed the least punches in the top 25, with only 26 landed, earning £64,084 for each one, putting him 12th on the list.

Deontay Wilder finds himself in 14th place, even after his three major clashes with Fury, earning £63,173 per punch.

Andy Ruiz Jr, who beat Joshua back in 2019 in one of the greatest shocks in boxing history, is 17th, earning £52,775 per punch landed.

AFN Boss accused of lack of transparency

Lambasted for his dictatorial leadership style

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The Tonobok Okowa-led AthIetics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been enmeshed in crisis as board members allegedly accused the President of unilaterally leading the federation.

Investigations revealed that 80 percent of members are calling for urgent emergency meeting with a view to keeping the records straight.

Sources close to the federation said that board members were displeased with the crisis as the president has sidelined them in making decisions.

The source also informed that Okowa had resorted to using those considered as outsiders for major assignments, while also not involving the members in sponsorship deals that involves the AFN.

The members alleged that Okowa had concealed the monetary deals involving the federation, as well as Premium Bank, which organizes the Lagos City Marathon.

They also accused Okowa of denigrating them in manners unbecoming of a leader, while also accusing the president of deploying moles to undermine the board members.

“Imagine, AFN President was elected president for Africa Zone 2 and none of the board members was informed or have knowledge of it” an aggrieved member of the board of the Federation complained.

“The magnitude of ignorance exhibited by the AFN president through his style of administration has caused the federation enough disregard and disrespect from most international athIetics bodies.

“Okowa didn’t organize any athIetics competition or attracted any sponsorship deal to the federation in two years, but claimed to be spending his personal money which was understandably sourced from the government of Delta State,” the source further claimed.

Investigation also revealed that all AFN sub-committees are not functional, while the majority of board members are ignored by the President, and are not involved in team selection or assigned responsibilities.

The appointment of AFN national coach was done without the board’s approval, a development that was displeasing to the board members. In addition, there is no accountability and transparency in governance as there are no documents to back up loans, endorsements and World AthIetics (WA) funds that accrue to the federation, leading to hardships faced by coaches and lack of competitions for athletes.

The AFN President recently sourced money to actualize the Nigerian junior athletes’ trip to Zambia for the CAA Championship, none of the board members were notified of the funds drive.

Also, the team to Zambia was selected unilaterally by the President and the Technical Director, with majority of the athletes coming from only two geographical zones.

“We have serious issues at the AFN and the earlier these issues are addressed the better for the progress of athletics in Nigeria,” a federation source told TheNicheng.com.

Chelsea’s new coach wants Osimhen at all cost

Focuses on two vital positions after his unveiling as Chelsea manager

Pochettino Available - Solskjaer Struggling: Man United Need To Make A Decision Now

By Ed Emeanua

Mauricio Pochettino will take over Chelsea FC manager’s role next season having verbally committed to the position according to talkSPORT, and has tasked the club to transfer Victor Osimhen and Jude Bellingham over to Stamford Bridge at all cost this summer.

Chelsea enjoys the fifth scare amount of goals in the Premier League this season, with 30 strikes from 31 encounters, notwithstanding expending over £200m on the acquisition of strikers under the tenure of Todd Boehly.

Romelu Lukaku is on his way back to Stamford Bridge from his loan spell at Inter Milan, while Napoli’s forward Osimhen has been strongly associated with the Blues.

Chelsea have the unenviable task of trimming down a tumefied troop in west London before the 2023/24 season following their current proprietorship’s decision to splash a landmark £600 million in a campaign.

Despite the amazing spending, there are in some ways yet glaring cracks in the team also, which the new manager will be tasked to plug.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager will likely commence his Chelsea duty by singling out two vital areas subsequent to his selection as Chelsea boss.

Pochettino will become Chelsea’s fourth boss inside one year, with incumbent part-owner Todd Boehly, already sacking Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, before hiring Frank Lampard on a short term arrangement.

So far, Chelsea icon Lampard has lost all the four games he has prosecuted on his return to the Stamford Bridge dugout, but is anticipated to end the season at the club, even with his lack of success.

Transfer commentator Fabrizio Romano informed Caught Offside when asked to analyze the areas of improvement at Chelsea: “For targets, it’s still early to mention names but for sure Chelsea will go for new number 6, new striker and the rest will be discussed in the next weeks, including the Mason Mount situation.”

In the number six role, or defensive midfield, Chelsea have so far, shattered the English transfer fee record to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £107m, but look set to lose N’Golo Kante with his contract about to run out.

The Club are expected to be in contention to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, just as West Ham’s Declan Rice remains a subject of interest.

Ex-Premier League star beats up cousin

Ex-Premier League star and boxing champ beats up family member in brutal pub brawl

Former footballer, non-league manager and boxing champion Curtis Woodhouse has incurred costs of almost £9,000 after pleading guilty to assaulting a family member at a Yorkshire pub last year, reports Mark Whiley and Mark Naylor for Daily Star.

Footballer-turned-boxing champion Curtis Woodhouse has been left with a hefty court bill after attacking a man in a pub.

Woodhouse, who played for Birmingham City in the Premier League before turning to boxing and winning the British light-welterweight title, admitted assaulting the man by beating in an east Yorkshire boozer on August 20 last year.

The 43-year-old has now been fined £6,500 and ordered to pay £300 compensation at Hull Magistrates’ Court following a violent incident in Driffield, in which it’s claimed he punched and kicked his cousin. As well as the fine and compensation, District Judge Mark Daley ordered Woodhouse to pay a Government-imposed £2,000 victims’ surcharge and £85 costs. His total court bill amounted to £8,885.

The assault occurred after tempers flared at the pub, reports HullLive, with words allegedly being said in the toilets before escalating in a beer garden. His guilty plea was accepted by the prosecution on the basis of punching and kicking by Woodhouse.

Defense solicitor Mike Farr said that Woodhouse pleaded guilty at the very first opportunity in the magistrates’ court on the first listing of the case. He made admissions and regretted his behavior during the assault. The victim was a member of Woodhouse’s extended family.

Woodhouse now ran his own company, said Mr. Farr. The sportsman had previous convictions, including being convicted at Bridlington Magistrates’ Court in 2006 of assaulting a police officer and using threatening words or behavior.

That incident happened after the policeman was called to a Bridlington pub where Woodhouse had become drunk and aggressive. Woodhouse was given 120 hours’ unpaid work and was ordered to pay £100 compensation.

Woodhouse played for a number of clubs during his football career, including Sheffield United, Hull City, Peterborough United and Grimsby Town. After becoming disillusioned with the game, he switched to boxing with great success.

Since hanging up the gloves, he has managed at non-league football level with Sheffield FC, Goole, Bridlington Town, Gainsborough Trinity and, most recently as boss of Marske United, who sacked him earlier this year.

UFC Fight Night: Song vs Simon

Ultimate showdown in which the Usurper and the Underkeeper must go for broke

Ricky Simón MMA record, career highlights and biographySong Yadong will face Ricky Simon in the main event of UFC Vegas 71. | IMAGO / Imaginechina

By Ed Emeanua

On Saturday April 29, 2023, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) presents its Fight Night 223 featuring a Song Yadong versus Ricky Simón headliner, in a matchup where the underkeeper dukes it out with the usurper.

This weekend’s main event involves two rising stars with their eyes set on the future. It is a fight in which Song is bent on making a comeback to winning ways following his devastating TKO loss off a doctor prescribed mercy-stoppage to Cory Sandhagen at UFC Fight Night 210 on Sep. 17, 2022. This clash represents the big event in UFC Vegas 72 fight card which will air live on ESPN+ from UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, for over five-rounds.

Ranked number 8 in his class, the underkeeper-Song (19-2-1, 1 NC)-who fights by way of China, will attempt to keep his spot on the ranking log against the usurper-Simón (20-3)-who hails from the United States. Simón, in turn, will reciprocate by doing almost everything possible to takeover his opponent’s place on the bantamweight catalogue for who is who in world Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), when all is said and done.

UFC Fight Night

Before his September 2022 loss, Song won two of his previous fights via TKO against Marlon Moraes in the first round and Julio Arce (in round 2), and defeated Casey Kenney via a split decision. Simón will be gunning for his sixth straight win in the impending grandstanding and beefing with Song on Saturday. Song on his part, is ridding on a confidence building wave of five-fight win streak in which he has notably successfully snuffed out three oppositions and is hoping to stretch that confidence with another win on Saturday night.

In his past appearance in July, the American was able to subdue Jack Shore in a second round submission win via an arm triangle choke at UFC Long Island on July 16, 2022. The victory came after his second-round knockout of Raphael Assuncao and an undisputed win over Brian Kelleher via decision. Ranked tenth in the bantamweight class, Simón’s last memorable loss was to Rob Font by a unanimous decision at UFC Washington on Dec. 7, 2019. Simón is aware that a victory against Song could force the organization to approve a Simón versus Font rematch.

This bout was originally scheduled as the co-main event for last weekend’s UFC Vegas 71, but was moved to this week as an upgrade and mostly to headline UFC Vegas 72. Simón seized the opportunity to voice his appreciation over the change following the announcement last Saturday.

“Bantamweight is the best division right now,” he said via Twitter. “5 round, main event!”

Though this fight will be Simón’s first in the five-round UFC fighting duration, he is not new to going into uncharted waters during bouts. In 2017 before coming to the Brand, Simón endured five rounds of blood letting with Chico Camus to win the LFA Bantamweight Championship. Half of his UFC violet dates have also lasted the entire duration of the bouts.

In the co-main event, middleweight and Brazil star, Caio Borralho (13-1), will tryout for retaining his unblemished UFC record when he tangoes with Michal Oleksiejczuk from Poland. Also on the main card, Rodolfo Vieira (8-2) of Brazil will fight with Cody Brundage (8-3) of the United States in another middleweight face-off, while Brazil’s Marcos Rogerio de Lima (20-9-1, will) take on Waldo Cortes-Acosta (9-0), who fights out of his native Dominican Republic in the heavyweight division, and Josh Quinlan (6-0) of the United States will do battle with Ange Loosa (9-3) of Congo at welterweight.

The lead of the preliminary card features Slovakia’s heavyweight Martin Buday (11-1) clashing with fellow heavyweight and American, Jake Collier (13-8). In other bouts, the American, Julian Erosa (28-11), takes on Mexico’s Fernando Padilla (14-4) in a featherweight joust, as Natan Levy (8-1) of Israel tackles USA’s Pete Rodriguez (5-1), at lightweight, as well as Cody Durden (14-4-1), who will engage fellow-American, Charles Johnson (13-4) at flyweight.

In other bantamweight challenges, Stephanie Egger (8-3) from Switzerland goes up against Irina Alekseeva (4-1), Brian Kelleher (24-14) and Journey Newson (10-4) will duke it out in an all-American face-off, and Hailey Cowan (7-2) of the United States goes up against Jamey-Lyn Horth (5-0) of Canada.

Saturday 29 April – UFC Fight Night – UFC Apex, Las Vegas, US

What time does it start?

The prelims will begin at 9pm BST (1pm PT, 3pm CT, 4pm ET) on Saturday, with the main card following at 12am BST on Sunday 30 April (4pm PT, 6pm CT, 7pm ET on Saturday).

How can I watch it?

The card will air live on BT Sport in the UK, with the broadcaster’s app and website also streaming the fights.

In the US, ESPN+ will stream the action live, as will the UFC’s Fight Pass.
