THE BIG EVENT: WWE BACKLASH

Backlash-WrestleMania 39 fallout, making of match cards, bad blood, and more

WWE Backlash 2023 to take place in Puerto Rico

WWE Backlash 2023 to take place in Puerto Rico

By Ed Emeanua

WrestleMania 39 may have come and gone, but its fallouts needs to be evened, reconciled or avenged for all parties to move on.

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is taking sports entertainment on a roller-coaster trip to the Land of the Boricuas-Puerto Rico-on Saturday, for its WWE Backlash on May 6, with one of the Island’s most famous sons, Bad Bunny, also set to event. The events and schedules in San Juan are notable fallouts from WrestleMania, or confrontations among WWE Gladiators that needed to be addressed.

The previous two years, the show was called WrestleMania Backlash, but has now gone back to “Backlash” for this episode. WWE made the the event public on March 8, 2023, and rolled out tickets on sale on March 24, 2023. By March 28, the event was already sold out.

The choice of Puerto Rico for this weekend’ Backlash should not be lost to history. More than a decade ago, the Company consolidated its association with Puerto Rico when it staged New Year’s Revolution on the Island. “In 2005 when I was a kid, I wasn’t able to attend New Year’s Revolution at el Coliseo,” Bunny stated in a WWE company press release last week.

“Finally, 18 years later, WWE returns to the island with a massive event and this time I won’t miss it.”

In the same communique, WWE executive, Paul Levesque also tried to hype up the event: “We’re excited to bring Backlash to San Juan as the demand for WWE premium live events outside of the continental United States continues to grow,” said WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque.

“Bad Bunny is one of the world’s most-popular entertainers and nowhere is that more evident than in his native Puerto Rico.”

Backlash will go on air live from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The music icon Bunny, a Grammy award winner on two occasions, will showcase his hosting talent on the night. This weekend’s event establishes the very first WWE high quality live event in Puerto Rico since January 2005.

The WWE Backlash is a unique combat sports content that demonstrates the spirit of resilience as well as the sport’s remarkably reactionary attitude that is its distinctive element. The event’s intent is for a targeted participation in a landmark panorama of the demonstration of the comeback phenomenon by an all inclusive WWE Universe and a selected segment of the company’s star election.

Now in it’s 18th edition, Backlash has with each coming year, been fueled by the whiff of vengeance from fallouts from past events that stubbornly clings to the ominous sports entertainment air, or the foreboding feeling for a necessity to even a score.

The event is therefore a stage for the Brand’s Superstars to either try to reclaim lost grounds, or consolidate on gains from a recent pay-per-view event in which the challenged was a victor and the challenger, the vanquished.

The more complicated or trivial the manner and nature of the loss is, the better. Sometimes, the prelude to a WWE Backlash confrontation may not carryover from the pay-per-view gone by. For instance, the antecedent of the Brock Lesner matchup against Cody Rhodes on the grand platform of the weekend’s Backlash event in Puerto Rico, is of particular noteworthiness.

Lesnar’s brutal beating beating of Rhodes few weeks earlier served as the prelude for making the fight at Backlash. The confrontation on live TV has now set the stage for their impending faceoff at this weekend’s backlash. Both the events leading to the making of the fight and actual announcement for it happening served as preparatory jimmying to rev up fans’ excitation before the gladiators go to war.

Bad Bunny vs Damian Priest – Street Fight

It came to the end of the cliff when on the April 21 episode of SmackDown, Zelina demanded that Adam Pearce should match a match against Ripley for the SmackDown Women’s title happen.

Zelina invoked her status as the only woman from Puerto Rican descent in the women’s division and her resolve to prove all doubters of her abilities wrong. The match was later made official. Rhea and Zelina were involved in the mixed tag team match between Judgment Day and LWO on RAW event on May 1, where Judgment Day triumphed but Zelina stole the show by flattening Rhea out with a Meteora on the floor.

Then, on the episode of RAW of April 17, 2023, Cody called out Brock to the middle of the ring, but Adam Pearce emerged and agreed to book the proposed match to calm down Cody as Brock was walking down to the ring. Sandi Lovric turned the hopes of Napoli fans into despair when he scored the opening goal with a well-placed shot that hit the top-right corner of the box after just 13 minutes from kick-off, .

In the 53rd minute, Osimhen sparked life back into jubilant Napoli fans when he fired in the equalizer off a rebound.

Fanny Amun won’t write off Eaglets

Believes technical crew can make improvements

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Former Golden Eaglets coach Fanny Amun says it is too early to write off the country’s U-17 national team at the on going Africa cup of nations in Algeria.

The Golden Eaglets lost their second group B match by a loan goal to Morocco on Wednesday.

Amun in a chat with Sports Joust disclosed that it would be totally wrong to criticize the country’s flag bearers because the competition is still very young, adding that he believes the technical crew are working hard to make the team better.

” To be honest with you, It won’t be fair to conclude that this is a bad team. If you can recollect, my team lost the opening match in Japan and we won the cup at the end of the competition,” he said.

He added ” I think we should allow them return from Algeria after which we can start to look at what went wrong and how to solve the problems to prevent them from happening in future. I still believe they will qualify ”

It should be recalled that Fanny Amun led the Golden Eaglets to win the U17 world cup in Japan in 1993.

Nigeria will take on South Africa in the last group B match on Saturday. The Golden Eaglets must win the match convincingly to advance to the quarter final of the competition.

Morocco is leading the pack in group B with maximum points from 2 matches. As of the time of filing this report, South Africa is playing against Zambia in other group B encounter.

Tima Godbless

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) technical director, Samuel Onikeku says junior Athletes came for the competition in Zambia to garner necessary exposure, describing the outing of the Nigerian team to the Confederation of African Athletics in Ndola, as a rewarding experience.

He further emphasizes that the Athletes were in the competition for exposure but had to perform beyond expectations despite difficulties they experienced while coming to Zambia.

“Majority of them are travelling for the first time. All those that have competed have won medals, and the middle, and long distance athletes we brought have gathered enough exposure,” Onikeku says.

He added that winning medals was not the priority of the federation, but the priority was to expose the junior athletes to many competitions since that is where the future lies.

“This is a youth competition is not all about winning but giving them the necessary exposure for the future. It’s purely developmental at this stage. Winning medals is just an additional bonus,” he says.

Meanwhile, the juniors AthIetes have won 7 gold medals and are expecting more as the Championships draws to a close, and according to Onikeku, the athletes, despite all the difficulties they went through on their way to Zambia, have put up an excellent performance.

In some of the events concluded Tuesday, Faith Okwose running in the U-18 category, clinched the 200m gold to win a sprint double. She had won the 100m with 11.53 seconds, and ran a personal best of 23.31 seconds while winning the 200m event.

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has inspired the Golden Eaglets to go for another three points in tomorrow’s clash with Morocco’s U-17 team in order to book an early spot in the tournament’s quarter-finals.

The NFF supremo, on a visit to the team camp in Constantine on Monday night, in company with Member of NFF Board, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, reiterated that the boys need to give their all to defeat group leaders Morocco, and climb to the top of the pool ahead of the final Group B matches on Saturday.

“Let me start by congratulating you on your victory over Zambia on Sunday. It was a tough game, but your quality showed in your ability to pick the three points. However, nothing has been won yet. You must go all out against Morocco to achieve victory and bounce back to the top of the group.

“It is important to assure of your qualification to the knock-out rounds early so that you avoid all kinds of permutations before the last match of the group phase. Nigerians are watching and supporting you in scores of millions and you cannot afford to disappoint our people.”

Favour Daniel’s strike from a goalmouth melee, 14 minutes from time, handed the five-time world champions all three points against Zambia at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui on Sunday evening. Morocco defeated South Africa’s Amajimbo 2-0 hours later to leap to the top of the group on a goal advantage over the Eaglets.

As a 12-nation tournament, the first two top-placed teams in each of the three groups will advance to the quarter-finals, alongside the best two third-placed teams. The quarter-final matches will produce the four semi-finalists, who will also automatically qualify as Africa’s representatives at this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup finals.

On Sunday, just before they left the hotel for the stadium, the delegation received Nigeria’s Ambassador to Algeria, Mrs Aisha Muhammed Garba who came with some top-ranking officials of the Embassy of Nigeria, all the way from Algiers. She encouraged the team to aim for the trophy as more than 200 million Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora are rooting for them to triumph at the continental fiesta.

Reveals why she is jealous of Rhea Ripley

WWE Raw Womens Champion Bianca Belair has made an incredible impact since joining WWE, Mike Plume reports for Inside Ropes.

Belair initially made her name as an elite college track and field athlete, becoming an All-American and All-SEC selection at the University of Tennessee in 2012. After approaching WWE in 2016, she was signed by the company after a successful try-out and assigned to the Performance Center.

Making her NXT debut a year, later she would make her breakthrough with her participation in the inaugural Mae Young Classic before embarking on an unbeaten streak on the yellow brand that lasted 367 days. Belair also competed in the first ever women’s War Games match and made her first main roster appearance as a surprise entrant at Royal Rumble 2020, eliminating 8 competitors in a staggering debut.

After wrestling alongside The Street Profits at WrestleMania 36, Belair would be drafted to SmackDown and would last 56 minutes en-route to winning the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble. The win would hand Belair a shot at the SmackDown Women’s Champion Sascha Banks at WrestleMania 37, a match which saw history made as two black women faced each other for the first time at WrestleMania.

With all those achievements under her belt in such a short time it may be surprising to learn that Belair has declared that she is jealous of current SmackDown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley.

During an interview ahead of WrestleMania 39 with Ring The Belle, Belair revealed that she was jealous of Ripley’s recent feud with WWE Hall Of Famer Beth Phoenix:

“I wanted to hang out with Beth Phoenix. I mean, Rhea’s have a great year. She’s done a lot of amazing, great things. I’m just like, ‘I wanted that.’ Beth is amazing. She’s great. Whenever I came into WWE, my answer [for which legend I would want to face in a dream match was always] Beth Phoenix.

So I’m excited for Rhea. She’s doing amazing things, and I’m excited for her WrestleMania match, but I was a little jealous when she got to wrestle Beth Phoenix.”

Former Eaglet Babajide Ogutuwase advises Country’s Football Federation on way forward for national team development

Coach Babajide Oguntunwase

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been advised to promote the present U-17 squad to the Flying Eagles to allow continuity and stability in the country’s national teams in future.

Former Golden Eaglets forward Babajide Oguntunwase who gave this advice in an interview with Sports Joust disclosed that the Flying Eagles will perform better if the present Golden Eaglets are given automatic promotion to the junior national team.

” This is why the European and South America teams are doing well in all competitions. I think we should also emulate their style for the betterment of football in Nigeria. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in letting this U-17 squad graduate to the U-20 and the Super Eagles in the future ” he said.

He added “Without being told, it is very obvious that there will be cohesion and understanding in a team that stays together for a long time. All the NFF need to do is to replace players who failed to meet up to the required standards in the camp.

On the chances of the Golden Eaglets qualifying for the world cup at the ongoing U-17 Africa cup of nations in Algeria, Oguntunwase said he believes that the Nigerian flag bearers will pick one of the world cup tickets to represent Africa at the U17 world cup in Peru.

“The truth about major tournaments is about winning your first match which the Eaglets have been able to achieve. This victory will surely boost their morale ahead of their next match. I think they stand a chance to progress to the next round.”

Nigeria tamed the Junior Chipolopolo of Zambia by a lone goal in their Group B opening match on Sunday. Morocco and Nigeria are leading group B with 3 points each, while Zambia and South Africa have no point.

Four countries will qualify to represent Africa at the U-17 world cup in Peru from November 10, 2023 to December 10, 2023.
