Nigeria’s U-17 Boys, Golden Eaglets have not come as far as the quarter-finals of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations to be dumped out of the competition without earning a World Cup ticket, says Head Coach Nduka Ugbade.

The Golden Eaglets and their officials arrived in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria on Monday, three days ahead of their quarter-final clash with Burkina Faso’s Young Etalons at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

“We had an interesting match with South Africa and it has prepared us well for further challenges in the competition. We learnt a lot playing Zambia, Morocco and South Africa – all strong teams – in the group phase, and that was good furnace for us to be a better squad, ” Ugbade said.

“The quarter-final matches will be very hard nuts to crack because that is the step that earns you the World Cup ticket. None of the four games will be easy. Our interest is Burkina Faso and we are working hard towards achieving success.”

Burkina Faso had an interesting last match of the group phase, coming from behind to defeat and dump out Cup holders Cameroon 2-1 in a truly fascinating encounter.

Nigeria also came from behind twice to edge South Africa 3-2 in a memorable encounter in Constantine, with the five goals scored by different players on the night.

Ugbade added: “We have not come this far to drop out. My boys are focused hard on the World Cup ticket. After that, we can then focus on other objectives.”

The match between Nigeria and Burkina Faso begins at 8pm on Thursday.

Victory over the Young Etalons will earn Nigeria the opportunity to go for a record-extending sixth FIFA U17 World Cup title.

As AFN amends its constitution

Athletics Federation of Nigeria national congress postponed - Sports Leo

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN) Congress has given the board of the federation power to convene board meetings in its amended constitution.

The earlier amended constitution gave only the President of the federation the power to convene board and Congress meetings.

However, in the newly amended constitution, the Congress, at its first meeting since the board of the AFN was sworn in June 2021, agreed that both the board and the President can convene meetings of the federation.

Article 10.1.2 of the Amended constitution reads inter-alia: “The President or 2/3 of the board of AFN shall direct the Secretary General to convene the meeting or the Congress.”

The Congress also agreed on a four term tenure limit for board members as well as a change of the federation’s logo.

Tafida Gadzama, the AFN first Vice President and Sydney Olympics 4 x 400m gold medal winner, says the decision of the federation’s Congress is supreme and can only be changed by it.

Gadzama also revealed that the AFN constitution did not contain any recall clause. “Once a member is elected or nominated into the board of the federation, only the Congress has the power to sack such a member after all the constitutional procedures have been met,” Gadzama said.

Nigeria athletics contingent to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Under 18 and 20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia, are back to the shores of Nigeria.

On hand to receive the youngsters at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Lagos, was the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, and some top officials of his ministry and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

It was a moment of joy, ecstasy and jubilation as the nation’s Junior Athletics team touched down in Lagos.

Team Nigeria finished second position, behind South Africa, at the 2023 African Under 18 and 20 Athletics Championships, winning 17 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze medals, in Ndola.

The U18 team’s performance was headlined by the Championships record set by sprinter Faith Okwose, triple jumper, Precious Ugo Irivi and 400m runner, Samuel Uchenna Ogazi.

Okwose, double sprint silver medalist at the National Sports Festival last year in Asaba, Delta state ran 11.53 and 23.31 in the 100m and 200m respectively to successfully complete a sprint double at the Championships.

Irivi set a new 15.70m Championships record in the girls triple jump event while Ogazi ran 46.01 to also set a new competition record as he also successfully completed a 200m/400m double.

The U-18 came second on the medal table behind South Africa with 19 medals comprising eight gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

For the U-20 team, World U20 finalist and reigning Nigeria U20 record holder (11.09), Tima Godbless was the star of the championships.

The 2022 National Sports Festival 100m and 200m champion replicated the feat in Ndola as she also successfully complete the sprint double.

Horizontal jumper, Grace Oshiokpu also completed a rare long jump/triple jump double at the championships.

The Nigerian U-20 team also came second behind South Africa in the medal table with 15 medals comprising nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals

The performance is a huge improvement on the team’s performance in 2019 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast where they won 13 gold, 6 silver and 13bronze medals

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles hit Buenos Aires

Argentina 2023: Ahead of this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup finals

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The delegation of two-time runners-up Nigeria have arrived in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina for a 10-day camping programme ahead of this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup finals.

A contingent of 20 players and 10 officials departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Saturday night aboard a Turkish Airline flight, and travelled through Istanbul before heading to the “land of the Pampas”.

With a record of having finished with the silver medals in 1989 and 2005, and with the bronze medals in 1985, the Flying Eagles are hoping to break the duck and collect the top prize in their 13th appearance at a tournament they first graced in Mexico 40 years ago.

That year, they stunned then Soviet Union 1-0 through a well-taken goal by Tarila Okorowanta in Monterrey, but then lost 0-3 to Brazil in their second game in Guadalajara. Needing victory to reach the knock-out round, the Flying Eagles could only draw with the Netherlands in their final group game in Monterrey.

Nigeria has been slotted in Group D for this year’s championship and will play the Dominican Republic, Italy, and Brazil in that order in the group phase.

Their first two games will hold in Mendoza, in the far west of Argentina, against the Dominican Republic on 21 May, and against Italy on 24 May, before they fly to La Plata to play Brazil on 27 May.

La Plata, Santiago del Estero, San Juan and Mendoza are the four host cities for the 24-nation championship.

Algeria 2023: Ugbade says his boys want to go all the way after sweet victory over Amajimbo

Nduka Ugbade captained the first Nigerian squad to win a FIFA World Cup, in 1985, and was assistant coach when the Golden Eaglets won the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates 10 years ago. He also took a FIFA U20 World Cup silver medal in 1989. Now, he is looking to lead the Nigeria U17 team to win the Africa U17 Cup of Nations as preparatory to giving the FIFA U17 World Cup a shot later this year.

“These boys have now picked up the confidence they needed following the defeat by Morocco and they are now looking forward to going all the way here,” Ugbade said on Sunday following the Golden Eaglets’ 3-2 win over South Africa in their last match of Group B in Constantine on Saturday.

Vicky Mkhawana steered the Amajimbo ahead in the 6th minute of the encounter, from South Africa’s first corner kick of the match, and Nigeria equalized in the 33rd minute also through a corner kick as Charles Agada powerfully nodded into the net with the Amajimbo goalkeeper stranded.

Much against the run of play, the Amajimbo restored their lead with a fabulous solo goal in stoppage time by Siyabonga Mabena.

Undeterred, the five-time world champions restored parity when Light Eke finished coolly from a low cross by Charles Agada, two minutes into the second period.

The Nigerians were completely in control afterwards, and Abdullahi Abubakar scored his first goal of the competition with a calm finish in the 63rd minute.

“This victory has restored the boys’ confidence. We needed such a win going into the knock-out rounds and it is our belief that we can handle the pressure there.

“The loss to Morocco was also a good lesson for us. When you’re at a championship, you need a winning mentality, but also a match that provides good lessons along the way. Both factors make for a very strong and ready squad.”

The Golden Eaglets will play the winner of the clash between Cameroon and Burkina Faso (Group C) in the quarter finals on Thursday.

Nigeria breezed into the last eight of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Algeria with a 3-2 defeat of South Africa’s Amajimbo in an interesting encounter in Constantine on Saturday night.

Five-time world champions Nigeria, who pipped Zambia 1-0 in their opening match but then lost by the same margin to Morocco in their second game, fell behind as early as the 6th minute when Amajimbo drew the first blood by converting their very first corner kick in the tie.

The Eaglets had the ball in the net four minutes later but it was ruled off-side. They continued to knock as Tockukwu Ogbadibo’s shot proved too weak to trouble the opposing goalkeeper, and Light Eke’s header missed the target.

Charles Agada, who also had been knocking on the door, brought Nigeria level in the 33rd minute when he nodded into the net from a corner kick with South Africa’s goalkeeper in no man’s land.

South Africa shot ahead once more with their last kick in the first half, but Light Eke restored Nigeria into the game two minutes after the restart.

Abubakar Abdullahi shot Nigeria into the lead for the first time in the match in the 63rd minute, and it remained that way till the end of the match as the Eaglets finished with six points and in second place in Group B, behind Morocco who also ended with six points but with a superior goals difference.
