Still enraptured by their 7-0 spanking of the Niger U-20 girls in the opening match of Group B of the ongoing WAFU B U-20 Women Championship in Kumasi, Ghana, Nigeria’s Falconets cannot wait for Wednesday to fire from all cylinders once more, against their Togolese counterparts, in order to reach the tournament’s semi-finals before their match against Burkina Faso on Sunday.

Forward Opeyemi Ajakaye, who won a FIFA U-17 World Cup bronze medal with the Flamingos in India last year, turned up with a hat-trick, and defender Jumoke Alani, and midfielder Chinyere Kalu were also among the goals as the World Cup quarter-finalists steamrolled the girls from Niamey on Sunday.

Victory over the Togolese on Wednesday will assure the Falconets of a place in the semi finals, which is why they will pull no punches right from kickoff by 6pm at the Baba Yara Stadium.

On Sunday, the Falconets will be up against Burkina Faso in the last match of Group B, scheduled for the Paa Joe Stadium also in Kumasi.

Hosts Ghana head Group A which also has the Republic of Benin and Cote d’Ivoire.

Bosso expresses confidence in Flying Eagles

Argentina 2023: Bosso, Eguavoen optimistic Flying Eagles will not crumble against Italy

Nigeria's Flying Eagles Beats Dominican Republic 2-1 In U-20 World Cup [Watch Highlights] | Kanyi Daily News

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Head Coach Ladan Bosso says Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will not be immersed in admiration for the Italian team but would take the fight to the youthful Azzurris in Wednesday’s clash as the Nigeria prepares to face Italy at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

The Italians went on rampage in a wrapped first half blitz that saw Brazil eventually capitulate to a 2-3 defeat in Mendoza, Sunday, and the conversation at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina has been over them.

The Italians quickly erected a fantastic framework and buoyed by the support from near-capacity attendees at Estadio Malvinas Argentina, they overwhelmed the Brazilians, scoring three goals in just 45 minutes.

However, Bosso says his team will take a totally different approach against the Italians in their clash at the same venue tomorrow.

“We stayed back after our match against the Dominican Republic to watch the Italy match against Brazil, and we took a lot of notes from there. The Italians have the midfield machinery to outrun any team that is flustered by their pace and organization, but we will know how to deal with that,” Bosso said.

“We have the boys who can neutralize their mortal armory and help us deliver some blows of our own. Wednesday’s encounter will be interesting. We will respect them but we don’t fear any team at this championship.”

Technical Director of the NFF, Augustine Eguavoen told thenff.com that the manner in which the Flying Eagles set up on Wednesday, and the level of concentration and adherence to game-plan, would matter a lot on the day.

“The Italians are a good side but nothing is given in football until a match is played and ends. It is about the set-up, about the structure of your team and how much you bring to bear what you have noticed about the other team. I’m happy our coaches saw the Italians play the Brazilians and it is now left for us all to put our heads together and devise a winning plan.”

The Italians top Group D ahead of the Flying Eagles only as a result of having scored more goals, and the race to the Round of 16 is already fierce with Brazil most likely to edge the Dominican Republic in the other match of the pool on Wednesday evening.

“Our mantra is full concentration and once we achieve that and follow through with our game-plan, we will get a result,” Bosso insisted.

Argentina 2023: Nigeria wins opening game

Edges out Dominican Republic for first three points in Mendoza

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles earned the first three points of Group D of the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina after an own goal by Guillermo De Rena and a smart finish by Samson Lawal steered them beyond Dominican Republic in Mendoza.

Ibrahim Muhammad’s shot had been firmly held by goalkeeper Xavier Valdez and Jude Sunday and Tochukwu Nnadi had threatened in the defense of the opponents within the first quarter-hour, before Japanese referee Yusuke Araki opted to consult the Video Assistant Referee and then awarded a penalty to Dominican Republic in the 20th minute, after a tackle by Daniel Daga.

The resultant penalty was brilliantly converted by Edison Azcona to give the Dominican Republic the edge in the first half of the game.

Sunday, Nnadi, Fago Lawal, Samson Lawal, and Muhammad, all doubled their efforts with onslaughts launched towards the opposition, but goalkeeper Valdez was brilliant on the day, especially in tipping over Sunday’s dipping shot from outside the box in the 37th minute.

Defender Solomon Agbalaka, who headed-in the goal that sank hosts Egypt at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in January, attempted a similar effort in the 58th minute but found Valdez capable. From a dashing run in the 61st minute, substitute Emmanuel Umeh should have done more than place the ball in the keeper’s waiting hands.

Daga, Sunday and substitute Haliru Sarki all tested the keeper in a second half dominated by Nigeria, but Samson Lawal was very alert to smell blood and capitalize on a defensive lapse by the boys from Dominican Republic to score Nigeria’s winner in the 68th minute. This was a minute after Jude Sunday had the ball in the net from a flowing team move, but it was ruled offside.

“We are happy with the three points though we wanted the boys to win by a higher margin as goals advantage do matter along the line in a competition such as this. The next two matches will be much tougher and I expect the Flying Eagles to also show sterner stuff,” said NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi who watched the encounter at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.

Next up for the two-time runners-up of the FIFA U-20 World Cup is a clash with Italy at the same venue on Wednesday evening. A draw will most certainly guarantee a place in the knockout rounds for the Flying Eagles, ahead of their final group phase encounter with Brazil in La Plata on Saturday.

Forest beat Arsenal to hand Man City the Premier League crown

By Ed Emeanua

Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi saved Nottingham Forest from relegation jaws making Manchester City a three consecutive premier League champion in the process.

Thanks to Awoniyi, the Reds secured their Premier League status next term, just as Arsenal surrendered their ambition to regain the shield to Manchester City, as Forest sucker-punched the Gunners 1-0 at the City Ground on Saturday.

Awoniyi’s solitary first half goal against an insipid Arsenal side at City Ground was all that it took to turnaround a topsy-turvy season for Forest’s record signing this season.

Only Manchester United, City’s arch-rival have won the Premier League on three consecutive seasons. The Red Devils have actually performed the feat twice in their history.

City also could win the FA Cup final when they take on struggling Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, and are rest assured of no reason to keep on looking over their shoulders on their Premier League account, as Arsenal will now only settle for second no matter what happens in their game.

The defeat steamrolls Arsenal on 81 points, four points adrift of the already crowned-three-time reigning Premier League kings, who also have two outstanding games to be played, with just a solitary match remaining for the rival.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have 37 unassailable points from the four bottom-of-the-table teams, and are mathematically safe from relegation.

Nottm Forest 1-0 Arsenal: Sub-par Gunners suffer shock FA Cup exit versus Championship opposition

Yet, the season of the Nigeria international who made this happen was largely unsung before now.  since his arrival at City Ground, Awoniyi was blighted by either poor form, the outcome of  an injury plagued football term.

But things began to happen for the former Liverpool academy starlet during the tail end of the season when relegation survival became all that mattered in the struggling Reds Camp.

His couple of braces here and there soon after began to give Steven Cooper’s side hope of a possible relegation lifeline when all seemed but lost for Forest. But the African savior saved the best for almost the last, securing his side the relegation safety route with a game left to play.

Once again another limp Arsenal outcome on the weekend– a shock 1-0 capitulation to Nottingham Forest and Awoniyi’s 19th minute brilliance– has established Man City as champions of England for the third season in a sequence, and the fifth time in the last six terms.

FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists, Falconets of Nigeria will be up against the U-20 girls of Niger Republic in the first match of Group B of this year’s WAFU B U-20 Women’s Championship in Kumasi, Ghana on Sunday.

The Nigerian girls landed in Kumasi on Thursday afternoon, and trained at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday morning.

Coach Chris Danjuma has picked a number of the ladies who steered the squad to a last-eight finish at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Costa Rica in August last year, and included as well some members of the bronze medal-winning U17 girls from last year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India.

The Nigeria against Niger Republic clash will commence at 3pm, while the second match of the group between Burkina Faso and Togo, begins at 6pm.

On Wednesday, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso will commence their hostilities at 3pm, before the Falconets tango with Togo from 6pm.

The group stage comes to a close on Sunday, with Nigeria up against Burkina Faso at the Paa Joe Stadium from 4pm. Togo and Niger Republic will play simultaneously at the Baba Yara Stadium.

A confident Nigerian team says it will not underrate the opposition but will go with full confidence into picking all three points when it takes on Dominican Republic at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on Sunday evening.

Head Coach Ladan Bosso, his assistants and the players were at the match venue on Friday evening for a familiarization visit ahead of Sunday’s encounter, which is their first in a pool that also includes Italy and Brazil.

“As I stated earlier, we are happy with the results from the two friendly matches we played in Buenos Aires. We won one against an Argentina club and then drew with the Colombia U-20 team that’s also taking part in this tournament. Those are not bad results.

“More than anything else, what the results have done is to give us confidence that we can get the job done. Victory over Dominican Republic on Sunday will stabilize our winning mentality. It is a factor that matters in championships and that is why we are determined to win on Sunday.”

On Thursday, the seven-time African champions held their first training session in Mendoza, with Coach Bosso supervising a programme that lasted two hours. There was another session on Friday.

Italy-based youngster Victor Eletu, eventually joined the squad a couple of days ago, and will strengthen the team’s engine room from where the forwards will expect the supplies to down the opposition.

Bosso will most likely opt for the squad that started the friendly against Colombia in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, with Chijioke Aniagboso in goal, Daniel Bameyi, Solomon Agbalaka, Abel Ogwuche and Benjamin Frederick-in defense, with Ibrahim Muhammad, Samson Lawal and Jude Sunday, upfront. However, Emmanuel Umeh, who was among the scorers in both friendlies, could start against the Dominican Republic.

Iwobi plots Everton relegation escape route

Sees winning remaining games as Everton’s safest bailout from relegation jail

Alex Iwobi - latest news, pictures and video on the midfielder

By Ed Emeanua

Alex Iwobi has mapped out what he considers as the most plausible escape route from being relegated to Championship football at the end of the season for his troubled Everton team.

The Everton midfielder insists the players target of two wins from their last two games should help safeguard their Premier League pedigree.

“We can’t be too down but there is a saying in football that you can’t be too high, like against Brighton, and then too low about City. We just need to kick on and go again,” Iwobi said.

“The mindset is to have the belief that we can stay up and get maximum points – get six points.

“We have to prepare, analyze and see Wolves’ weaknesses and how we capitalize against them.”

The Toffees received a crucial psychological-boost from their unexpected victory at Brighton two weeks ago, but lost six days later to defending Premier League champions Manchester City at Goodison Park. But, the heavy defeat to the current league leaders was very expected, and has not in anyway altered the calculations for Sean Dyche’s team to survive their current relegation struggles.

A win from their last two matches with other results elsewhere aligning with Everton’s ambitions would almost likely stretch their top-flight continuum into a 70th term but winning away to Wolves and at Goodison Park against Bournemouth would certainly seal premiership status for the Toffees.

A year today, Everton avoided possible relegation in their penultimate game, nailing shut the relegation coffin in the last home encounter against visiting Crystal Palace, but with a much more compact Premier League table bottom raucous playing out this term, it is very possible that the determination of one or both remaining relegation allotment will tarry till the last day and likely the last kick of the season.

Thus, like Iwobi calculates, a total win for Everton will absolutely be vital to avoiding relegation, at least this season.

Despite the defeat by City, some Everton’s fans still remained at the fast-depleting Goodison Park arena eager to express encouragement to the players.

Iwobi sees this gesture as critical for the final day of the season against a Bournemouth side that has been assured of Premier League football next season. The Everton midfielder believes that the fans’ attitude was a vital tonic for a team going to Molineux before that, particularly in a season that has been testy between supporters and the organization.

“To have the fans having our back after a disappointing result shows how much the fans care and want us to do well,” Iwobi continued.

“We use that as motivation to go into the next game. If they can fight for us, it is only right that we can fight for them as well.”

Right-back Nathan Patterson is still edging towards rediscovering his groove in the squad having battled with conditioning problems and it has been rather tasking for the defender to break into a lack-lustered team, beginning the last two games because of Seamus Coleman’s injury status.

However, because of the opportunity he’s been accorded, his focus is on the battle for survival as opposed to being distracted by his personal travails.

“You always have to be ready any time you are called upon and I feel I’ve done that in the last couple of games,” he said.

“We are making sure we are focused on the things we do and as long as we do our job and do our best I’m sure we will be fine.

“All season we’ve concentrated on ourselves, trying to not look at the table and anyone around us.

“We just have to make sure we are focused and everyone is on the right page.”

Everton await news of the gravity of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s groin injury, which forced the forward to be substituted as a safeguard at half-time with Everton 2-0 short against City.

Sean Dyche listened to the voice of caution following the injury-ravaged striker’s complaint of a worry in the first half and removed him from the frontline in the hope to use him to a greater advantage in the two games ahead.

While Calvert-Lewin has only managed to score once in five outings after two-and-half months on the injury layaway due to a hamstring, his coming back to the side has led to improved output with the striker as the focal point.

‘Eden Hazard is laziest player ever’

Midfielder John Mikel Obi tell-it-all on British radio sports program

When Eden Hazard was UNSTOPPABLE! | Premier League | Sunderland 3-4 Chelsea - YouTube

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed that Real Madrid midfielder Eden Hazard is the laziest player he played with all through his football career.

Obi and Hazard were teammates at Chelsea FC, where Obi spent eleven years at Stanford Bridge, while Hazard featured for the Blues for seven.

Speaking on Talk Sports a British sports program, Mike explained that there’s no place for a player to say I don’t want to train and get away with it, but Eden Hazard would not train with his teammates and still come up with brilliant performances on match days.

“I’ve never seen his kind before in my life,” he confessed.

“He is the laziest footballer I’ve ever seen in my life. Because of his lukewarm attitude to trainings, he would stand on a spot and ask his teammates to pass him the ball, but in most cases, we always ignore him because we want him to work hard too.

“We just allowed him do whatever he likes because on match days, he would come to the dressing room with the Man of the Match trophy and say hey guys, I’ve done it again.”

After featuring in over 190 appearances and scoring 50 goals for Lille FC in France, Hazard signed for English club Chelsea FC in June 2012.

The 21-year-old Lille playmaker joined the then newly crowned European champions for £32m on a five‑year deal worth £100,000 a week after tax.

He quickly became a key player for Chelsea, helping the team win the Europa League in his first season, and the Premier league title in both 2014/25 and 2016/17. He was considered a Chelsea legend, scoring 110 goals in 352 appearances for the Blues.

Hazard has also won two La Liga titles and one Champions league trophy with his current club Real Madrid FC in Spain.

Three years ago, Eden Hazard made his big-money move to dream club Real Madrid and it began to unravel for the Belgian talisman.

On arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Hazard struggled with fitness for games due to too many injuries which denied him consistency in La Liga games and Spanish football appearances.

Between August 2019 to November 2021, the Hazard missed 68 appearances for Real Madrid because of different musculature ailments, transfermarkt.co.in claimed.

This poor form pushed Hazard down the starting roster under manager Zinedine Zidane (2019-2021), who turned to Vinicius Jr to fill Los Blanco’s left-wing position.

The coming of Carlo Ancelotti, has even transformed Vinicius into a well polished performer which further removed Hazard from the regular discussions at the Bernabeu.

Stage set for Senegal and Morocco showdown in the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations Final at Nelson Mandela Stadium on Friday night

U17-final

The stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling final between Senegal and Morocco at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, Algeria in the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations 2023.

The two have been amongst the most consistent performers in the competition. The final will kick-off at 22h00 local time (21h00 GMT) and will be watched in several parts of Africa.

CAF TV partners including beIN Sport, SuperSport, Canal+, StarTimes will show the final live including 30 Free-to-Air TV stations in Africa.

In territories where there is no TV partner, CAFTV (YouTube) will show the final.

So far, the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations Algeria 2023 has been a resounding success attracting a number of top scouts from leading African clubs and also European clubs.

CAF and the Local Organizing Committee (“LOC”) have been working hard in the last few hours preparing for the final.

While the 90 minutes will be the main event, a beautiful pre-event music and entertainment performance is being prepared featuring some top artists in Algeria.

The artists include the musical group Freelance, and the Algerian legend Cheb Bilal.

Tickets for the final can be purchased on the platform TADKIRATI and in all approved distribution points.

Road to the Final:

Senegal dominated Group A, defeating Congo (1-0), Algeria (3-0) and Somalia (3-0). The Lion Cubs of Teranga knocked-out South Africa (5-0) in the quarterfinals before facing Burkina Faso (1-1) in the semi-finals, where a penalty shootout (5-4) decided the match.

Morocco also had a similar path to the Final. They finished top of their group ahead of Nigeria who they beat 1-0, South Africa (2-0) and Zambia (2-1). In the quarter-finals, they eliminated hosts Algeria (3-0). In the semis, they were held by Mali 0-0 and needed the penalties to advance (6-5).

TotalEnergies U17 AFCON: We were patient and organized, says Morocco’s Said Chiba

Morocco head coach Said Chiba during the post match press conference after the 2023 Under 17 African Cup of Nations Semifinal match between Morocco and Mali held at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine

Morocco’s coach Said Chiba has paid glowing tribute to his players for executing their tactical plan to the latter, as they edged out Mali 6-5 on post-match penalties in Constantine on Sunday to qualify for the final of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Atlas Cubs held on for a barren draw in regulation time, shutting out a potent Malian attack, before goalkeeper Taha Benrhozil’s heroics saw them triumph on penalties.

“We knew that we were going into a difficult game and we needed to manage it well and to ensure Mali, which is a very high-level team, does not find its rhythm and channels to attack. We played compact as to how we had planned,” the coach noted.

He added; “We were patient and very organized and this was the only solution for us to win. We executed our plan really well and these players have demonstrated a lot of tactical discipline beyond their age.”

Morocco have had one of the meanest defenses in the tournament so far, and they have only conceded twice, against Zambia, in their last Group B match in which they changed almost the entire team as qualification to the quarter final was already confirmed.

Morocco have made it to the final for the first time ever, as their best performance prior to this was a fourth-place finish when they hosted the tournament in 2013.

“I am proud of the players and proud of this team. We have made everyone at home proud and now we hope for one more beautiful story,” Chiba added.

Morocco switch attention to next Friday’s finale when they take on Senegal, who have also qualified into the final for the first time ever.

Dia delighted to guide Senegal to its first ever TotalEnergies U17 AFCON final

Senegal head coach Serigne Saliou Dia during the 2023 Under 17 African Cup of Nations semifinal match between Senegal and Burkina Faso held at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba

Senegal prevailed 5-4 on post-match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. This is their third participation at the tournament and in the previous two editions they have played in, the Teranga Cubs have not made it past the group stages.

“I congratulate my players who fought hard to achieve this objective of going into the final. I also congratulate Burkina Faso because it was a great quality match between the two sides,” the tactician said.

He adds; “playing the final for the first time ever is a great achievement for Senegal and we are all proud as a team.”

Looking back to the match against Burkina Faso, the coach said it was a difficult duel, with tactical and physical prowess going head to head.

“We had two opposite styles with Burkina Faso. For us we try to progress with the ball from the back while Burkina Faso play with the long balls and attacking the second balls. They were also very strong in midfield. But as a team we put in a great effort,” Dia noted.

Meanwhile, he has paid a glowing tribute to academies and youth training centres in Senegal, saying this achievement was down to the work they have put in, to nurture talent from an early age.

“I want to thank the coaches of these players from all over Senegal as well as their training centres. We are trying to put things in place as a country and to give players the Senegalese identity from a young age, instill the values in them and we are now seeing the fruits,” Dia further added.
Senegal will now face off with Morocco in the final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Friday, where they hope to follow in the footsteps of other Senegalese national teams in winning continental titles.

Most recently, Senegal won the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) hosted here in Algeria, while they won the U20 crown in Egypt. In 2021 they won the senior AFCON and the Beach Soccer AFCON.

Can they make it five in a row?
