‘Enact laws to keep politicians off sports’

Former African triple jump champion and vice president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Rosa Collins-Okah tasks lawmakers to help make sports thrive

Rosa Collins Okah

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Former African triple jump champion and vice president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Rosa Collins-Okah has urged the incoming National Assembly to enact laws that would aid sports development in the country by keeping politicians out of sports administration.

One of such laws, according to Collins, should be to prevent career politicians and their cronies from contesting for positions in the various sporting institutions and federations in the country. She said during an interview on Eagle7 FM that only ex-internationals, sports men and women and technocrats should be allowed into the nation’s sporting bodies.

“To avoid some of the crisis we have in sporting federations, the national assembly should look into the possibility of making laws preventing politicians from occupying our federations,” she said.

“Former sportsmen and women should be in the helms of our sports. This is what we see in many countries that are doing well in international sports, some countries have even made it a law.

“In fact, the President, Bola Tinubu, in his consideration for a sports minister should think about having an accomplished sports person in that position.

“ Bringing people who know next to nothing about sports who come and buy everyone with their money, has more than anything contributed to the decline of sports in the country.”

Collins noted that the country, corporations, and individuals should invest massively in sports, particularly in women because female sport stars have made the country proud more than their male counterparts.

“We have more potential world record holders like Tobi Amusan out there. That girl is cooking in the house, the girl carrying jerry cans of water and those hawking in the streets could be the next world champion. We have to bring them to the stadium and train them. We need to encourage parents to allow their girls to come for sports,” she said.

“We need to have track facilities in almost every local government of the country to make it available to these raw talents, if we can do close to half of what America is doing, we would surely have more champions.”

She called on the government to create a conducive environment for corporate and individual sponsors to come into sports.

She also lamented the lack of women participation in administration and coaching. “In Nigeria, once a woman tries to be head of a department, they are resisted by men, the men feel threatened, women need to be respected and allowed to be in authority” she said.

“In athletics for instance, before I became vice president, it was only Violet Odogwu-Nwejei that was the woman president of the AFN and the men kicked her out. She was allowed only one tenure.

“Women are born leaders and I’m encouraging women to come out, be respectful and also, be stubborn when necessary. Don’t allow anyone to bully you”

Uruguay pegs back Italy 1-0

line-ups

Uruguay (4-4-2): Randall Rodriguez; Rodrigo Chagas, Sebastian Boselli, Facundo Gonzalez, Alan Matturro; Fabricio Diaz, Damian Garcia, Franco Gonzalez, Juan de los Santos; Luciano Rodriguez, Anderson Duarte, Andres Ferrari.

Italy (4-3-1-2): Sebastiano Desplanches; Samuel Giovane, Daniele Ghilardi, Gabriele Guarino, Riccardo Turicchia; Cesare Casadei, Matteo Prati, Tommaso Baldanzi; Giacomo Faticanti, Francesco Esposito, Giuseppe Ambrosino, Simone Pafundi.

Uruguay edged out Italy 1-0 on Sunday at the Estadio de la Plata to be crowned champions the just concluded FIFA U-20 World Cup championship in Argentina.

The game began with a measured crescendo for a goal rush as the opponents sought to gain early advantage. Italy’s Samuel Giovane robustly challenged a boisterous Uruguayan player as early as the thrid minute and the Ascoli player was lucky to escape without a card.

By the 10′ both teams strongly exerted their wills with Uruguay more poised to take the lead on the scoreboard. The sides continued to make their play on the surface against the difficulty of the ball persistently skipping off the uneven surface.

At the 7th minute mark, Allan Matturro attempted a strike as the Uruguay left back latches on to a long field ball beautifully but failed to hit the mark.

Three minutes later, it was the turn of captain Fabrizio Diaz to try his luck but his effort only went so close for La Celeste who are really posing a major nuisance for Gli Azzurrini as the ball clips the back stanchion.

Soon after, Diaz returns with another testy hit but his attempt goes wide. Uruguay are at this stage, really pressing hard and Rodriguez Lucas in the Celeste goal, continues in effect, a mere observer this far.

On the 15th minute stage of the first half, Italy breaks and Damian Garcia fouls Tommaso Baldanzi, leaving Simone Pafundi free with the ball. The Empoli player crosses as Italy appealed for handball.

The ball does appear to have clipped Sebastien Boselli on the arm but with the complexity of the handball rule these days, it is understandable why the Italians feel undone by the officiating.

The next two minutes saw the Italians with the better of the exchanges as they began to press and for the first time in the game, Gli Azzurrini have La Celeste on the backfoot.

At the 20′ mark, it was 4 shots from Uruguay against nil from the Azzurri. Despite La Celeste being the better side on the offensive, it’s Italy dominating the possession stats with 63% for the European side as opposed to the 37 (%) for the South American side.

Around the 28th minute, Sebastiano Desplanches produced a save made heaven for Italy, as he palms away a fine Anderson Duarte header, both players delivering the medley of excellent effort by the Uruguayan attacker and a stunning stop from the Italian stopper. This was arguably, the best chance of the night so far.

Despite the huff and puff, the sides retired for the first half with the game in a scoreless stalemate.

La Celeste restarted the second half and Italy’s Giuseppe Ambrosino was yellow carded almost immediately as he feigned a foul and a great spot from the Swedish official.

In the 48th minute, Uruguay pressed again and win the first corner of the half. Italy managed to clear the danger but already it is appearing a similar pattern to that of the first 45’… Uruguay press and Italy on the backfoot.

On the 85th minute however, there was a major breakthrough as Rodriguez gets the goal that Uruguay deserved to win the game.

Djokovic overpowers Ruud in straight sets

French Open win makes him the first man to win a record 23 grand slams

By Ed Emeanua

Novak Djokovic overpowered Casper Ruud in three straight sets in 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, and 7-5, in the French Open final to become the first man to win a record 23 grand slams.

Djokovic’s victory against the Norwegian on Sunday raises him a step above ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal in the all-time list of grand slam winners, in the absence of the Spaniard who missed the tournament through injury.

Few, before the match, considered Ruud as capable of carrying out the artful quest of stopping Djokovic from achieving his third French Open title.

The win against Ruud also makes the Serbian the first man to win each of the four grand slam tournaments at least three times.

The defeat cost the underdog the opportunity to capture his first grand slam and progress beyond his showing at last year’s Roland-Garros final, when he could only take six games away from Nadal.

After battling to take the first set 7-6, Djokovic started the second in ruthless mode. A vicious double-handed backhand across court leaves Ruud in no man’s land. The Norwegian answered back with just his second ace of the encounter to tie at 30 all and goes on to hold.

Djokovic then responded using power and angle with a forehand winner from Djokovic that sped across court, bringing his team on their feet applauding, 30-0.

Ruud slipped on edging a return at the next play and Djokovic was three set points up. Needing just one, the Serb drilled a backhand down the line. Now, the 36-year-old was one set away from history for the.

Ruud allows a forehand sitter to go astray to fall 15-30 behind and put undue pressure on himself. Djokovic then delivers a top-notch return right into Ruud’s feet that Norwegian fails to check and the Serb has two set points.

A Djokovic mistake allows Ruud to save one and then the second with a incredible forehand out wide. Ruud recoups his calmness to hold and make Djokovic to at least serve for the second set.

At this stage Ruud seems to be just hanging in there with his own serve, often looking miles off getting close to breaking Djokovic. But brilliant energy around the court propels him to 15-30 after some interesting mixes.

However, Djokovic is back on top through two unforced errors from Ruud and the Serb gets a hold. Djokovic is now one game away from a two-set lead.

The third set was only a routine walk through the park as the Serb closes down the game to make history.

Amanda Nunes quits MMA fighting

After retaining her UFC women’s bantamweight gold

Amanda Nunes easily defended her UFC women’s bantamweight title on Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia against Irene Aldana, and then called it quits after their one sided affair.

The UFC 289 main event bout at Rogers Arena, saw Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC) beat Mexico’s Irene Aldana (14-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-43) to record her seventh career title defense.

The encounter was mostly lopsided, the exception being a wallop of a punch that Aldana landed on Nunes within the opening minutes of the fight. Afterwards, Nunes usurped complete domination of her Mexican foe.

Using sharp boxing skills and comportment, ‘The Goat’ clearly showcased an element her game that was way beyond the talent of her opponent.

Nunes jabs and mixture of takedowns were weaponized and effectively used to bash, bruise and bloody Aldana for most of the 25 minutes that the bout lasted.

However, the highpoint of the encounter followed the official fight decision when Nunes told her in-cage interviewer Daniel Cormier, Nunes of her decision to call it quits on the trade that has brought her so much fame and fortune.

“My mom has been asking me so much to do this for so long,” Nunes said.

“She can not take it anymore, my family, as well. Nina has been around me for so much with me, my whole career. She’s pregnant now. We’ve been in this road for so long.

“I decided right now, I’m still going to enjoy everything that I’m making. I’ve got to travel a little bit with my family. I’ve got to spend more time with my family in Brazil as well.

“I left them so young to come here and chase this dream and everything. It was never a doubt in my mind that I’d become champion. But when I became a champion it was unbelievable – a double champion, as well.”

Nunes also called on her fellow Brazilians both men and women to win UFC gold. She is the only Brazilian fighter currently holding UFC gold. “I have one more thing to say,” Nunes said.

“I come from a small city in Brazil. The name is Pojuca. Nobody knows where it is in Brazil, but I made it here. I’ve become a champion and the only champion Brazil has right now.

“So, Brazilian fighters, get your sh*t together. Come get a belt, all right? I’m leaving. Thank you.”

Nunes, retires as the fighter seen by many as the greatest female MMA combatant of all time aged 35. Her impressive career record includes victories over former UFC title holders Cris Cyborg, Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm, Germaine de Randamie, and Julianna Peña.

Nunes lost just two bouts in the company to Cat Zingano in September of 2014 and to Peña in December 2021.

City complete their treble trophy triumph

Defeat Internazionale 1-0 to become European club football champions

By Ed Emeanua

Manchester City claimed the Champions League title after overcoming Internazionale with a 1-0 win at Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

Rodri was on target following a scoreless first half, scoring the only goal of Saturday’s epic final, and enabling Pep Guardiola’s City to a treble-trophy climax, having earlier captured the Premier League shield and the FA Cup this season.

Substitute Romelu Lukaku fluffed a golden Inter chance for a leveler late in the game as City goalkeeper Ederson managed to block his header.

The Italians were in a spirited rush for a goal as the game dragged to its end but City stoically rebuffed their onslaught to emerge a first-time Europe champions.

Manchester City lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury with Phil Foden taking the place of the Belgian in the 36th minute.

City commanded the first stanza of the season’s climax of Europe’s most prestigious football final but both side failed to score despite both teams creating opportunities at either end.

Lautaro Martinez effort to score well inside the box was thwarted by Manchester City’s goaltender Ederson with a rescue  in the 59th minute.

Manchester City finally broke the stalemate in the 68th minute when Rodrigo finished at close-range from a Bernardo Silva assist.

Two minutes later, Inter Milan scuffed a chance to equalize with Federico Dimarco crashing his header into the crossbar. Substitute Foden then missed an opportunity to increase City’s lead in the 78th minute.

ROAD TO THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL | Man City v Inter | Every UEFA Champions League goal so far

In the 88th minute, Ederson conjured up an astonishing save to prevent Lukaku’s header from sailing into his net.

The treble win of Premier League shield, FA Cup and Champions League crown all garnered in a football season affix the team into history and notch Guardiola his best accomplishment in a highly successful coaching career.

The latest Guardiola accomplishments are the products of a thirst for another Champions League medal that took 12 years to materialize.

The caveat that has trailed Guardiola’s path from Barcelona to Bayern Munich and now City, is if he could mobilize the cojones to win the champions league without a Lionel Messi in his team. Now the world finally has his answer.

The 1998-99 Manchester United squad were before now, just the English exception to the treble win, and the almost-25-year in the making for it to materialize demonstrates just how hard it is to accomplish.

Swiatek wins but Muchova’s more motivated

French Open runner-up now wants a slam of her own

Highlights

By Ed Emeanua

After beating back the formidable challenge of Karolina Muchova on Saturday, Iga Swiatek secured her position as the preeminent female tennis player on clay on earth, winning her third finals over four years at Roland Garros.

Swiatek becomes the first female tennis star after Justine Henin’s 2007 feat to defend her crown on the clay court of Paris also joining Naomi Osaka on four grand slam titles wins, and only Venus Williams with seven slams, remains the only still playing tennis star to hold more.

The 22-year-old Polish star has seen her professional fortitude mature after overpowering her opponent to capture her third French tennis Open championship.

Muchova missed upsetting Swiatek by just a few sets, in what is her initiatory Grand Slam title match at this year’s event of the French Open, battling to a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 loss to the number one ranked female tennis persona on the planet.

Undoubtedly, this would go down as the stiffest challenge that Swiatek has encountered in her grand slam finals rollouts, with the Czech titlist outsider roaring back from a set and 3-0 down to force a few moments of reckoning.

Twice, Muchova was a break ahead but Swiatek refused to go down, finally triumphing 6-2, 5-7, and 6-4 in two hours and 46 minutes of crunching tennis on the clay.

“I’m feeling all these different emotions right now,” Swiatek said moments after her triumph.

“It’s pretty surreal, everything. But the match was really intense, a lot of ups and downs. Stressful moments and coming back. So I’m pretty happy that at the end I could be solid in those few last games and finish it.

“But Karolina really played well. It was a big challenge. I’m happy and really proud of myself that I did it.

“This one, for sure, it was a little bit tougher in terms of injuries and the pressure, and also coming back to this tournament as a defending champion.

“I’m happy that I finished the whole clay court swing so well and that I kind of survived. I guess I’m never going to doubt my strength again.”

The champion’s Czech opponent, with a rock-solid 5-0 win-loss record over the top-3 foes coming into the tournament, had a lot of positives to take back home from Paris.

“Well, I think this is pretty soon after the match,” Karolina Muchova said.

“I still didn’t kind of like soak it up. But yeah, it’s very, it’s a big motivation, now that I know that, you know, Iga Swiatek is World No. 1 and I was so close.

“I think now that I can do it. Obviously I know it’s not like, you know, just like that (snapping fingers). It’s a lot of work and effort to do, but I’m willing to take that.

“Yeah, I’ll try my best in other two slams this year and next year, and I hope I will again get a chance to play for the title again (smiling).”

Conor McGregor’s punch hospitalizes Miami Heat mascot

As crazy stunt goes wrong

Report: Conor McGregor sends Miami Heat mascot to ER after stunt goes wrong - MMA Fighting

It all appeared to be part of the show when UFC star Conor McGregor punched out Miami Heat mascot Burnie on Friday during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. As it turns out, it wasn’t all an act, Nolan King writes for MMA Junkie.

During a promotion skit to announce a partnership between the team and McGregor’s TIDL Sport recovery products, the UFC fighter struck the mascot twice – one standing and once on the ground. The mascot was then dragged off the court by its feet.

As it turns out, the blows sent the man playing the mascot to the hospital, according to a report Saturday by The Athletic. The man was later sent home with pain medications and is resting comfortably. No further details were reported, and the team has not made a statement on the matter.

McGregor, 34, does not have a fight on the books, though the promotion continues to angle for a bout between him and Michael Chandler, the two coaches of “The Ultimate Fighter 31.” He has not competed since he suffered a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

The Miami Heat could suffer a knockout blow of their own Monday, as they are down 3-1 in the series against the Denver Nuggets and face elimination in Game 5.

NFF opts for normalization committees

FIFA extends TTFA Normalization Committee to 2024

By Rasheed Adewuyi

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has opted to immediately set up Normalization Committees for temporary administration of the Football Associations of Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa, Kogi and Kaduna States.

This followed flagrant disregard of directives from the NFF by the said State FAs not to proceed with conduct of their elections as a result of court injunctions and petitions, in varying cases, and various shades of irregularities in the processes leading to the so-called elections.

Ali Muhammad Abubakar, NFF’s Head of Member Associations, explained: “Normalization Committees will be set up for Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa, Kogi and Kaduna States. All four States have failed to uphold the Statutes and the electoral code in their processes. Article 85 of the FIFA-approved NFF Statutes, under Unforeseen Contingencies and Force Majeure clearly stipulates that: ‘the Executive Committee shall have the final decision on any matters not provided for in the Statutes or in cases of force majeure’.

“However, the NFF has decided to uphold the decision of the Edo State FA to pass a vote of no confidence on its chairman, Mr. Rowland Abu, and to have the vice chairman in the role of Ag. Chairman. He has been told to lead the charting of a roadmap to the conduct of free, fair and credible local football councils’ elections and subsequently, the FA executive committee elections.”

Thenff.com gathered that a monitoring committee set up by the NFF will be in Jos on Monday, 12 June 2023 to assess the current situation in the Plateau State Football Association, and subsequently take a decision on the swirling controversies in the FA’s situation.

A normalization committee was approved for Akwa Ibom State because elections were conducted in contravention of a court injunction, and subsequent advice by the NFF not to go ahead. The tenure of the executive committee had since elapsed on 23 May.

With regards to Nasarawa State, so-called elections were conducted into the FA executive committee without first conducting elections into the local football councils, and the identities of delegates were shrouded in secrecy. The tenure of the FA board had since expired on 27 May. The situation in Kogi State was similar, with the tenure of the Kogi State FA executive committee having expired on 28 May.

As for Kaduna State, the tenure of the board expired on 31 May without elections, either into the local football councils (which were dissolved nearly four years ago) or the State FA.

Flying Eagles out of World Cup

Argentina 2023: Unlucky Flying Eagles eliminated after extra time in Santiago del Estero

https://youtu.be/h40hiKyr78o

By Rasheed Adewuyi

Two-time runners-up Nigeria dominated for large parts of the game but were eliminated from the FIFA U20 World Cup by a single goal on Sunday as Korea Republic surged into the semi-finals for the second successive tournament.

The Flying Eagles, who eliminated hosts and six-time champions Argentina in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, created few chances despite passing the ball round the field quite well, with lack of punch in the final third the undoing of the seven-time African champions.

Victor Eletu, whose show of guts and grits led to the second goal that ended Argentina’s hope on Wednesday, curled a fine shot from outside the box on the half hour, but the Korean goalkeeper punched it out of danger.

In a highly cagey affair, both teams watched each other closely and only few risks were taken throughout the first period.

In the second period, Nigeria looked more adventurous with defender Daniel Bameyi striking from the edge of the box, only to see his effort stopped by the goalkeeper. In added time, Emmanuel Umeh’s dazzling run ended with a shot that was also smartly held by the Korean goal-tender.

The Asian vice champions got the winner five minutes into the first period of extra time, when substitute Sun Choi met a corner kick with a glancing header, and Nigeria goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso was in no man’s land.

Umeh, with a great chance to equalize in the 109th minute, blazed over the bar, and in the final minute, struck the side of the net.

The Flying Eagles will return to the country on Tuesday.
