Israel Adesanya on Jared Cannonier’s radar

As ‘The Last Stylebender’ seemed impressed with his old foe’s recent feats

Round three: Israel Adesanya escapes takedown, Cannonier lands heavy jabs - Punch NewspapersFirst cut is the deepest: But Adesanya vs Cannonier 2 can still happen

By Ed Emeanua

In a tale of two fighters on same war path to glory, one of them-Jared Cannonier-now has the other on his radar following recent feats; the other-Israel Adesanya-a rather pretty short reaction to his former vanquished foe’s recent performance against Marvin Vettori.

After securing the second of his now two-fight win streak over the weekend, Jared Cannonier foresees just two open choices in his next Octagon appearance consideration. It is either one more crack at the Stylebender’s title or another likely Number one contender to the title chase down with a fighter ranked above him.

Adesanya, the reigning undisputed middleweight champion and two-time UFC title holder, climaxed his initial championship hold-down with an undisputed decision victory against Cannonier in July of 2022, before losing his gold to Alex Pereira last November.

Something the ‘Last Stylebender is willing to reveal over his new thoughts for Cannonier following his foes victory over Vettori is a mixed reaction of subdued perplexity that can also be interpreted as being impressed.

Dismissing a likely showdown with the undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev – except a fight with the Chechen fetches him a title shot, Cannonier’s performance against Vettori seemed to shock former opponent, Israel Adesanya, who could only tweet, “bro” at the end of UFC Vegas 75 fight.

Cannonier currently sits at No. 4 behind Robert Whittaker, Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya. ‘Po Atan’ is out of contention having vacated the division he is leaving the ‘Reaper’ and the ‘Last Stylebender’. Whittaker is already billed for his No. 1 contender bout against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290, with the winner expected to get the next shot at Adesanya.

Should Cannonier leapfrog Vettori when the rankings is updated, Cannonier would only occupy the No. 3 spot behind Whittaker, Pereira and Adesanya. Cannonier is only concerned that his name is among the next opportunities the UFC may consider to go up against Adesanya.

“The way I see the immediate future going is Robert is going to fight Dricus, I know Israel wants to fight Dricus so bad, but I feel with my performance, as far as the guys who make that decision go, I’m sure that puts my name well up there in that area,” said Cannonier at his post-fight press conference.

“I’m not really concerning myself with what may or may not be. I’m just going to focus on the next fight. I’m going to get back in the gym and get back to making myself better, get back to improving on my skills and worry about the next fight.”

‘Send corrupt sports administrators to jail’

Athletics boss tasks the Federal Government to curtail administrative corruption in sports by sending a message

Ahmed Shuaibu Gara: The Trailblazer Of Inuwa Yahaya Administration

By Rasheed Adewuyi
The chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association Shuaib Gara Gombe has suggested that the Federal Government should start sending corrupt sports administrators to jail in order to reduce the level of corruption in the country.
Gara Gombe who dropped this hint on Football Doctors a program on Facebook live on Sunday, explained that the best and the only way to reduce the level of corruption in Nigeria is to send any administrator found guilty of embezzling to the prison.
“As long as we don’t set a good example by making some people scape goats, corruption will continue to happen. Other sectors have sent people to jail, why’s the sports ministry not doing the same thing” he asked.
” Some years ago, eight hundred thousand dollars was missing at the NFF secretariat and the then sports minister who was supposed to investigate the matter and ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book, didn’t do anything after collecting twenty million dollars and a casket to bury his wife from the burial committee members that he alleged stole the money.”
According to Gombe, the Sports Minister in his defense for receiving the money and the casket said:  “when you’re in grief, you don’t  chose who to cry for you,” Gombe stated.
“I was shocked to hear that from him.”
Gombe said the only time we were close to prosecuting corrupt officials in sports was when the EFCC arraigned Sani Lulu, Amanze Uchegbulam, and Bolaji Ojo Oba, but the then Sports minister was only interested in removing Sani Lulu and not in sending them to prison.
The former Gombe State Football Association chairman frowned at the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to use FIFA subventions to resuscitate all the aging facilities in the country due to corruption
“You’ll be shocked to see how countries like Gambia, Senegal, Morocco, and Egypt, used the FIFA subventions to develop the facilities  which helped them to improve the standards of the game.
It should be recalled that  Nigeria was banned by FIFA after its auditors found out that the NFF could not account for the eight hundred thousand dollars.

Tom Watson wants answers from PGA Tour

For the Tour’s Saudi ‘hypocrisy’ in open letter

By Ed Emeanua

Tom Watson, one of the Golf’s most renowned legends, has asked the PGA Tour for answers following its contentious alliance with the Saudi-backed fund behind LIV Golf.

Watson, an eight-time major winner wrote an open letter to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour Policy Board. The letter, which was published by Golf Digest on Monday, asked for answers on the many lingering questions following the Tour’s decision to join up with LIV just to establish a brand new entity that will now obtain vital funding from the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

In the missive, Watson remarked about the “hypocrisy” of receiving Saudi funds following the Tour’s messy financial predicament, while also citing Saudi Arabia’s implication in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Monahan, 53, has for the time being, surrendered responsibility following disclosure he is in convalescence from a confidential “medical situation.”

He has become the subject of major controversy over the past week when news broke about the unexpected union with the Saudis after the two golf bodies were embroiled in antitrust litigations with each another.

Monahan encountered back-blasts from family members of 9/11 victims who complained of being “betrayed” by the commissioner’s decision for striking a deal with the PIF.

LIV Golf buckled professional Golf the previous year by enticing top stars like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson with nine-figure contracts, which resulted in a ban for the involved Golfers by the PGA Tour.

Below is Watson’s letter in full, as published by Golf Digest:

First, I wish Jay Monahan a complete and speedy recovery. I respect the leadership he has shown in the past for our Tour. It can’t be an easy job. With the recent high hurdles in dealing with LIV poaching Tour players and the legal battles presented as a result, I have a sense of the complexity of the issues which he presently faces as a leader.

Unfortunately, in the wake of recent news, I also understand the cries of hypocrisy. Because he is a smart man, I know Jay does too. In my opinion, the communication has been mishandled and the process by which the Tour agreed on a proposed partnership with PIF was executed without due process. As a group of players and stakeholders who represent the face and the brands of the Tour, what are our choices?

Clearly, the Tour’s traditional business model was threatened by LIV. The upstart tour created unprecedented obstacles and battles of both moral and financial consequence.

While I wasn’t in the player meeting on Tuesday, June 6th (ironically on the anniversary of D-Day), for Jay’s PIF partnership/Tour announcement, I’ve watched enough to know that it was certainly unlike any of the player meetings I’ve been involved with in my 50-plus years as a member of the Tour. The Commissioner and the PGA Tour Board, on which five Tour players sit, are going to have to do a lot of firsthand explaining to comfortably coax acceptance with our membership on this partnership with the PIF. The Tour’s stakeholders: the players themselves, the broad span of global media, as well as the tournament sponsors and independent Tour partners, require an explanation of the benefits of forming this partnership.

There are many unanswered questions to date, which I hope will be addressed with the players by Tour management at this week’s Travelers tour event. What does acceptance of this partnership mean to the Tour? What do we get? What do we give up? Why was this deal done in such secrecy and why wasn’t even one of the players who sits on the Tour’s Policy Board included? A matter this profound deserves thorough vetting by a representative group of stakeholders which include those, who in the end, define the public image and emotional connection with the PGA Tour.

I have a basic understanding of the role Saudi Arabia’s PIF plays in the world’s economy and that PIF money is invested in U.S. brands and businesses that are part of our everyday lives. I realize the United States has diplomatic relations with the Saudis and they have occasionally been allies of ours in the Middle East. It is my further understanding that many businesses, including some professional sports leagues have strict guidelines on the percentage of investment they will accept from sovereign funds. Before this agreement is finalized, I wonder, does the PGA Tour have guidelines? Have we, as a body, defined an acceptable percentage of PIF funding in the proposed partnership?

These questions are compounded by the hypocrisy in disregarding the moral issue; a position which for a long time was publicly highlighted by Tour leadership. While it is accepted that players on all levels would value the opportunity to make more money, it has also been illustrated that not all of our players are in search of money at all costs. Those who stayed true to the Tour for whatever personal reason or position of moral conscience are more than a few outliers. There are widespread rumors on the Tour offering financial reparations to these players who rejected offers from LIV and remained loyal to our Tour. Surely, that alone misses the larger issue of context here? And in a related question, what if any, are the plans to reinstate Tour players who defected and now want to return to the PGA Tour?

I still await Saudi acknowledgement of their role in the attacks of 9/11, which resulted in the loss of the innocent lives of 3000 of my fellow American citizens. I support 9/11 Families United and their efforts to release supporting exculpatory U.S. Government documents (See 9/11FamiliesUnited.org/Key Documents). That day, forever among the darkest in our nation’s history, is sadly not alone among the human rights violations we have seen employed by Saudi Arabia. I ask the Tour, how is a non-negotiable point for us one day one we negotiate around the next?

he reversal does appear to indicate a more desperate financial situation than has been previously revealed by the Tour. While last week I learned the significant news that litigation around the Tour/LIV conflict would be terminated with prejudice, that only solves one significant financial problem. It is important to understand how all of this has impacted the Tour’s Reserve Fund and the Tour’s overall financial solvency. Have funds been depleted to the point where the Tour needs an unprecedented capital injection to remain solvent now or for the future? Policy Board independent director Jimmy Dunne, (who helped broker the deal), has said the PIF is not investing money into PGA Tour, Inc. but rather into a newly formed for-profit commercial entity under the banner, PGA Tour Enterprises. Will PIF funds be invested only in PGA Tour Enterprises, not PGA Tour, Inc? What does that mean? What present and/or new assets go into this new partnership? What assets will be sold?

My overarching questions remain. Is the PIF the only viable rescue from the Tour’s financial problems? Was/is there a plan B? And again, what exactly is the exchange? We need clarity and deserve full disclosure as to the financial health of the PGA Tour and the details of this proposed partnership.

My loyalty to golf and this country live in the same place and have held equal and significant weight with me over my lifetime. Please educate me and others in a way that allows loyalty to both and in a way that makes it easy to look 9/11 families in the eye and ourselves in the mirror.

I am very grateful for our country, its abundant opportunities, and the wonderful life made possible by the PGA Tour.

Sincerely,

Tom Watson

Depleted Leone Stars plot Super Eagles’ fall

Coach John Keister takes a well mixed squad to attempt the disgrace of Nigeria in the showdown in Monrovia

Sierra Leone's Musa Noah Kamara looks dejected as Kei Ansu Kamara and Mohamed Buya Turay look on on January 16, 2022

By Ed Emeanua

Depleted and hard pressed to beat Nigeria more than ever before, Sierra Leone head coach John Keister confronts Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Monrovia on June 18 at the Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia with a well mixed squad of overseas and local stars.

The squad features the medley of 14 foreign based and 11 stars who ply their trade in Sierra Leone’s domestic football.

Hard done by Guinea Bissau’s spirited 1-0 defeat of Sao Tome and Principe few days ago, Keister’s Leone Stars must now tap into their inner reserve to beat Nigeria or missout completely in the qualified team list for Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Coach Keister’s team are already in Monrovia having arrived the Liberian capital city direct from Freetown, Sierra Leone on June 11 ahead of their final dress rehearsal for Sunday’s showdown against the Super Eagles.

The Leone Stars handed São Tomé and Principe a 2-0 beating in Group A’s match day four of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

It was coach Keister’s first victory for Sierra Leone in the qualifiers after managing the Leone Stars in two stalemated games and a loss in their preceding three appearances in qualifying play.

Keister’s side is without China based Issa Kallon who misses out because of difficulty with joining the national team from China, while The Netherlands based Alex Bangura will also not be in the Monrovia action having decided to take a break from the national team setup.

Also out is England domiciled Sullay Kaikai requested be excused for private reasons and Jonathan Morsey who plays out of Greece who needs a time off to rest.

England based Osman Kakay is on the injured list while Alhassan Koroma who comes in from Spain is serving time-out for suspension for being slammed for two yellow cards offenses in two previous appearances of the qualifiers.

Alie Conteh or N’zozi for short, the ongoing Sierra Leone Premier League top scorer will not feature in Liberia because of an administrative issue which needs to be sorted out by his club and his agent before he could the allowed to join national team.

Though Steven Caulker is included in the Keister’s list to face Nigeria on Sunday, nonetheless, he will have to be assessed for fitness to play as he is just returning from a surgery.

Sierra Leone has shown sterner qualities despite these absences posting an impressive 2-2 draw with Tunisia on June 8 at the Siaka Stevens Stadium Freetown.

Leone Stars starting line-up against Tunisia in Freetown  on June 8, 2013 are Sheriff Suma, Kei Kamara, Umaru ‘Zingalay’ Bangura, Mohamed ‘Poborsky’ Bangura, Ibrahim Tarawally, John Kamara Alhassan ‘Crespo’ Kamara, Mustapha Dumbuya, George ‘Kweku’ Davies, Mohamed ‘Medo’ Kamara, and Ibrahim ‘Obrey’ Kargbo.

The Leone Stars also defeated their Liberia in their friendly game in Monrovia on June 13, five days before facing the Super Eagles.

Sierra Leone setup two training camps ahead of the group A match with Nigeria. The home players commenced the foirst phase of the training in Bo on Tuesday, May 6, and were later joined by the foreign based players before the beginning of phase two of thier training schedule for the encounter with Nigeria.

Players that will be making Coach Keister’s final 25-man list will leave for Monrovia on June 11 for second and final training camp.

BIG-FIGHT NIGHT: UFC Vegas 75

Marvin Vettori vs. Jared Cannonier – UFC Vegas 75 | UFC Fight Night 2023 Live Stream

Live in 4 Hours: Don’t Miss It!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 75 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., June 17, 2023). UFC Vegas 75 will be headlined by the 185-pound showdown between Top 5-ranked middleweight contenders Marvin Vettori and Jared Cannonier. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, lightweight veterans Arman Tsarukyan and Joaquim Silva collide in UFC Vegas 75’s co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, middleweight mainstay, Armen Petrosyan, welcomes UFC sophomore, Christian Leroy Duncan, to his first UFC main card.

Marvin Vettori

Record: 19-6-1
Key Wins: Jack Hermansson (UFC Vegas 16), Roman Dolidze (UFC 286), Kevin Holland (UFC Vegas 23), Karl Roberson (UFC on ESPN 10), Cezar Ferreira (UFC Fight Night 155), Andrew Sanchez (UFC Fight Night 161)
Key Losses: Israel Adesanya (UFC 263, UFC on FOX 29), Robert Whittaker (UFC Paris), Antonio Carlos Junior (UFC 207)
Keys to Victory: Vettori is very much a Jack-of-all-trades. He’s not the best anywhere, but a rounded skill set and inhuman toughness have seen Vettori establish himself as a mainstay of the Middleweight Top Five.

In this match up, Vettori faces more of a specialist. Cannonier wins by out-striking opponents and/or knocking them out — that’s really it! Of course, if this fight remains just a kickboxing match, that specialization could easily favor “The Killa Gorilla.”

As such, Vettori has to mix it up. He has the cardio wrestle consistently without gassing in the process, an advantage over previous Cannonier foe’s like Derek Brunson. If he’s hiding those shots behind punches, he stands a fair chance at landing them or at least building up his offense with more follow up strikes.

In Vettori’s last bout, he demonstrated some improved distance defense and kicking activity. Both are going to be necessary tonight, because staying ahead on the points game will be key against a difficult man to finish.

Jared Cannonier

Record: 15-6
Key Wins: Derek Brunson (UFC 271), Sean Strickland (UFC Vegas 66), Jack Hermansson (UFC Fight Night 160), Kelvin Gastelum (UFC Vegas 34), Anderson Silva (UFC 237), Ion Cutelaba (TUF 24 Finale)
Key Losses: Israel Adesanya (UFC 276), Robert Whittaker (UFC 254), Glover Teixeira (UFC 208), Jan Blachowicz (UFC on FOX 26), Dominick Reyes (UFC Fight Night 129)
Keys to Victory: Cannonier is a fighter born with tremendous natural power and good patience — a rare combination. He’s hard to take down and harder to hold down, and he’s finished several opponents exhausted from the effort.

Maintaining distance is key here. At long range, his speed is going to be hugely useful, and his strikes from that distance are simply heavier. If Cannonier and Vettori are going kick-for-kick, it’s obvious who’s getting the better of that exchange.

If Cannonier can chop at his opponent’s base and keep his feet moving — his frequent stance switches should work well in that regard — his quickness is going to be so useful. Vettori tends to advance on straight lines, so taking angles and letting him walk into heavy counters is probably Cannonier’s best bet at cracking that granite chin.

UFC Vegas 75 FACE-OFFS: Vettori vs Cannonier

Bottom Line

The stakes are nearly identical for each man.

Both Cannonier and Vettori have proven themselves superior to most of the division, but they’ve also suffered clear-cut losses to Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya. Those fairly recent defeats limit their upward mobility, requiring a new champion or extensive win streak to get back in the title picture.

The only real difference is that Vettori is a decade younger. He has time to improve and remain in the title picture as the division changes. Cannonier, meanwhile, is surely closer to the end of his time as an elite Middleweight than the start.
