Manchester United capitulated to David Moyes’ swinging sabre falling to a famous defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday in their Premier League Matchday 18 fixture.

United has now gone well over six hours of total football without scoring as the Old Trafford fell by two goas to nil to a Lucas Paquetá inspired West Ham side.

Exactly at a time when Manchester United looked by far the more likely to score, Jarrod Bowen struck on the 72nd minute to give the Hammers the lead.

Bowen got on the end of a Paquetá outside-of-boot spooned pass down the inside-right area, then brought the ball down on the right-hand corner of the six-yard box, before opening his body, and bundling the ball through André Onana and into the corner of the net.

Six minutes later, Paqueta again provides another assist, rolling a first-time pass down the middle of the park for Kudus to take a touch to the right to evade Jonny Evans, before pivoting and whipping a shot into the bottom left corner in the 78th minute.

Both teams had huffed and puffed to a goalles first-half ending that saw some rather defensively inclined cagey play from the home team, and an offensive boogey effort from the visitors.

The second half began on same footing with United upping the ante in an increased effort to break their scoreless streak. But it was not to be.

Two quick-fire goals by Bowen in the 72nd minute and Kudus in the 78th, with the visitors also failing to respond, ensured that manager Erik Ten Hag’s side kept their now infamous scoreless record intact.

The London Stadium began to rocking soon after West Ham’s delivery of its second coup de grace against United. It had taken quite a while to happen, nonetheless, London has got its groove on.

Even if It had to take two stunning goals by the Hammers to get back this kind of feeling they always got from adoring fans here, the good is that the jive is back on, and it is just as well.

Manchester United are rocking too, but theirs is a very different type of groove in the away stand in London Stadium. There appears to be long faces, long forlorn looks, and long some long stares ahead into a nothingness in United’s fan area of the arena.

David Moyes has now gotten one over his former side as West Ham goes up to six spot on the Premier League table, leaving United down in 8th place, and once again, the second best in another Premier League fixture.

In all, Man ‘U’ has now lost the total of 14 matches-8 of them coming in the Premier League alone-this season. The rythym of United is more or less borne out of sadness.

Well, Manchester United has lost another Premier League match this term, and this time Ten Hag might not escape the chopper.

WMRA unwraps 2024 World Cup calendar

NEWS 23 DEC 2023

WMRA announces 2024 World Cup calendar

According to World Athletics, a calendar featuring 13 races spanning 10 events and eight countries has been confirmed for the Valsir Mountain Running World Cup in 2024.

Competition kicks off in June, when runners will head to Lake Tahoe in California for the adrenaline-pumping Broken Arrow Skyrace. Two Gold label races will take place across three days, starting with the short uphill on Friday 21 June before the classic 23km on Sunday 23 June.

July offers a frenzied month of activity, with races scheduled almost every weekend. Revisiting familiar courses, 7 July sees the return of the Grossglockner Mountain Run in Austria, while 14 July marks a return to Castro-Daire, Portugal, for the fourth edition of the Montemuro Vertical Run.

The Montee du Nid d’Aigle, introduced to the World Cup circuit in 2021, remains part of the programme and takes place on 20 July. This visually stunning 20km, 1850m+ classic from Saint Gervais to Refuge du Nid d’Aigle presents athletes with a breathtaking backdrop of the Glacier du Bionnassay.

As July draws to a close, an old favorite rejoins the World Cup circuit with a visit to Giir di Mont for the tour of the 12 pastures above Premana in Italy. This grueling 32km race, alternating challenging ascents with equally demanding descents, is set to captivate spectators and the atmosphere at the top of the mountain is something special.

Then, 10 August marks the Sierre Zinal race, renowned for its challenging trails through the Swiss mountains. The Race of the Five 4000s draws top-tier talent every year.

September sees the World Cup landing in Casto in Italy, the hometown of Valsir, for the Vertical and Trofeo Nasego events. This tiny town in the Brescia prealps is poised to witness a showdown among the sport’s elite.

Sky Gran Canaria enters for the second consecutive year hosting another Gold label race, and this year it is the longest of the entire season with its 44km 3344m+, 2453m- route on 22 September.

Just 10 days later, the focus shifts to Slovenia for the classic distance event at Smarna Gora.

Wrapping up the season, the final event takes place in Chiavena, Italy, continuing the tradition that commenced in 1986 as the inaugural officially recognized vertical kilometer.

This penultimate race on 12 October will ultimately determine the final podium positions after the preceding 12 races of the 2024 Valsir Mountain Running World Cup, leaving the Val Bregaglia Trail the following day to conclude the World Cup points tally. This is where the World Cup winners will be presented with their prizes.

As well as working in collaboration with esteemed mountain races worldwide, the World Cup’s continued partnership with Valsir has paved the way for several upgrades to this season’s series. All Gold label races will have WADA-accredited anti-doping measures. In a bid to bolster athlete support, there will also be increases to travel assistance and the overall prize pool, with the Valsir World Cup champions set to claim €5000 in 2024.

Florida State Seminoles Want ACC exit

Because New Members make conference weaker

The Florida State Seminoles believe the ACC has become weaker due to the new additions, reports for Gridiron Heroics.

The Florida State Seminoles have had a frustrating 2023 college football season. Despite going undefeated this year with a 13-0 record, they were left out of this year’s College Football Playoff. As the reigning ACC champions, there are question marks as to whether they will remain in the conference.

Now, we are starting to get a better idea of how they feel. Florida State has made some of its frustrations with the ACC known. Read on to find out exactly what that is.

Florida State Seminoles Think New Additions Weaken ACC

The Florida State Seminoles filed a 38-page lawsuit to challenge their obligation to the ACC. Rather than remaining with the conference through the 2035-36 season, they could try to leave the conference as early as 2025. Florida State is filing an official complaint in circuit court in an attempt to sue the ACC and allow the Seminoles to leave the conference.

There was one part of the 38-page filing that stood out. That section discussed the impact of the three newest members of the ACC. The three newest members are Stanford, California, and SMU respectively.

However, in the filing, Florida State essentially claims that those additions weaken the conference. Florida State wrote that these three additions will diminish the value of the conference rather than add to it. There are two notable reasons for this.

The first is that all three schools are deferring payouts as ACC members. One school is forfeiting its entire payout while the other two are forfeiting 66% of that potential payout for several years. The other reason mentioned for this is the strength of schedule.

Weaker Strength of Schedule

As mentioned above, the Florida State Seminoles missed this year’s College Football Playoff despite winning the ACC with a perfect 13-0 record. While scheduling was not the main factor, the lack of top-tier teams in that conference this year did them no favors.

Then, we need to take a look at what the new schools bring to the table. Admittedly, SMU had a pretty good regular season. However, they were not even in a Power-5 conference this season.

Stanford and California were in a very strong Pac-12 conference. However, they were two of the weaker members of that conference. California barely made a bowl game with a 6-6 regular season record. As for Stanford, they had an abysmal 2023 season with a 3-9 record.

Florida State is using the current status of the ACC and the new schools next year to essentially say that they are holding the Seminoles back. Would they have made the College Football Playoff if they won a stronger conference? We will never know. However, that combined with lost potential revenue seems to be influencing this lawsuit.

The Atlanta Falcons and head coach Arthur Smith have finally received their penalty for violating the NFL injury report policy in Week 7. Per the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the league and Roger Goodell have fined the Falcons $75,000 and Arthur Smith $25,000 for failure to disclose a sickness that limited running back Bijan Robinson for a contest in late October, Alec Musa reports for Gridiron Heroics.

Atlanta Falcons: Handed Heavy Fine for Limiting Star Rookie Bijan Robinson in Week 7

The Atlanta Falcons, alongside head coach Arthur Smith, will now need to pay a monetary penalty for their inability to disclose an illness for running back Bijan Robinson in Week 7. Robinson, the eighth overall pick in last year’s NFL draft, logged just one carry for three yards in the eventual 16-13 win. Robinson entered the game with double-digit carries in his first six NFL contests. Instead, the Falcons leaned on the duo of Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson to run the football. Allgeier logged 21 rush attempts for 59 yards, while Patterson took ten carries for 56 yards.

In a postgame presser, Smith said Robinson wasn’t feeling well, limiting him to a reserve role. However, the Falcons and Smith never disclosed the information before kickoff.

Arthur Smith and Atlanta Falcons: Subpar 2023 Season

The Atlanta Falcons have lost back-to-back games and sit near the bottom of the NFC South standings. They have yet to receive much from second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder, with the signal-caller throwing ten touchdowns to ten picks this season. Arthur Smith and the Falcons announced earlier this week that backup Taylor Heinicke will start. The Old Dominion product has tossed 37 touchdowns to 25 picks in six NFL seasons.

Anthony Joshua “looks scared”

As Deontay Wilder addresses potential fight

Wilder discussed his planned fight against Joshua at the press conference ahead of their respective fights on Saturday night and fans have now labelled the Brit as “scared,” Harry Davies, Boxing and MMA writer reports for UK Mirror.

Fans are convinced Anthony Joshua is “scared” of Deontay Wilder after the American addressed their planned mega-fight.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Joshua is hoping to set up a long-awaited fight with Wilder when he fights Otto Wallin on Saturday night at the ‘Day of Reckoning’ event in Saudi Arabia. Wilder is also in action on the card and will have to keep up his end of the deal by getting past Joseph Parker.

Wilder discussed his potential fight with Joshua at the press conference earlier this week as ‘AJ’ paid close attention to his rival’s words. “I see a man that has been focused on what task lies at his hand, the same as I,” Wilder said. “I’m not in his head so I can’t speak for himself. A lot of people have been asking me about his mannerisms and his demeanor, the way he’s been reacting to the media and the questions he’s been asked about him.”

“I can’t speak for him, we’re on the outside looking in so we’ll see. He has a big task to complete and so do I as well. When it’s all over with, we can talk about it. This moment in time, it’s getting close to the fight and we are both focused on the same task. That’s the win, I’ll leave it at that.”

Joshua (251.0 pounds) has over a 12-pound edge over Otto Wallin (238.6 pounds) for their main event clash.

“I’m a serious fighter and a serious businessman as well. Without Saturday night, there is no future. Saturday night has been my main focus. I need to get this win. I hope everyone is supporting me, putting me in their prayers, and let’s go out and handle business,” Joshua said.

Meanwhile, Deontay Wilder will be giving up serious weight for his co-main event clash against Joseph Parker. Wilder will be giving up more than 32 pounds for his fight, 213.0 pounds to 245.3 pounds for Parker.

“My new nickname is Dr. Sleep, and I’ve adopted that name. I have NyQuil in my right hand and I told him to bring a blanket and a pillow because it gets chilly over here,” Wilder said.

After his weigh-in, Parker shared some advice from his training partner Tyson Fury about the Wilder fight: “Don’t get hit with the right hand.”

Osimhen’s now or never Chelsea move dilemma

It’s Winter move to Stamford Bridge or bust for the man from Naples

Todd Boehly admits to 'mistakes' as Chelsea co-owner after ...Todd Boehly is gradually coming to terms with the wisdom that money alone, can’t buy you everything in football

By Ed Emeanua

Victor Osimhen will commit to a Chelsea move in January only for the right price and stipulations, as the Premier Leaguers now face a summer move or bust dilemma in their quest to land the Napoli maverick in Stamford Bridge.

Sources close to the Nigeria forward say Osimhen could sign for the ‘Blues’ brand, but would reject a Summer transfer to the club should Chelsea fail to secure UEFA Champions League football qualification for next season.

The Super Eagles forward may be open to sign for Chelsea in January and help the Club push for Champions League football qualification in the Premier League next season, rather than sign in the Summer transfer window when all hopes for continental football is lost.

“For the right fee and conditions of service, it is clear that Victor Osimhen could be persuaded to move to Chelsea in January and help his new team qualify for the Champions League,” one of our sources who is very close to the player said.

“It is clear that the problem in the Chelsea lineup is in the striker’s position. Osimhen could be the type of player that Chelsea need at the moment to resolve this issue.

“With the right price to Napoli, and the proper conditions attached to the deal, Osimhen might be willing to move to Chelsea in January and help his new team to gain more traction in achieving club ambitions this season. Moreover, he has already tasted Champions League football this season with Napoli and has scored in the competition. That should be enough for him.”

However, another source close to the player opined that Chelsea could probably encounter resistance from Osimhen to move to Stamford Bridge during the Summer transfer window if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. “I don’t see Osimhen moving to Chelsea during Summer transfer without the assurance of playing Champions League football for the side,” our source insisted.

“In this regard, Manchester United will definitely secure his signature next season if they come for him, and in addition to if they (Manchester United), also qualify to play in the Champions League next term.”

Chelsea currently lie tenth on the Premier League table and are distant from the UEFA Champions League qualification margin by the day as their forward line continue to misfire.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly may have also expended quite a significant portion of his £1billion improvement expenditure on his Club following his acquisition of the club on effort to sign a topnotch striker for Chelsea, but it appears he’s learning the hard lesson that there are just a few things that money can’t buy in contemporaneous football.

Chelsea has lavished well over £1billion on a total of 29 new players since the American took over the club. However, so far, very few of those signings have actually proved to be successful.

Following a comparative inaction during the initial months of Boehly’s takeover, Chelsea managed nine buys in under two months before ultimately, closing the summer day end of trading of the 2022 transfer window.

The Stamford Bridge side then added another eight signatories to their fold in the winter window, to take their season total signing to 18 players at the end of January 2023.

All in all, and in brief, 30 Chelsea transfers under Todd Boehly catalogued – from Mykhailo Mudryk to Raheem Sterling-in fifteen months, and under a scandalous three transfer windows, Chelsea has made 30 first team signings, and has also spent well over £1billion ($1.2bn) in so doing.

The Chelsea Football Club brand under the Boehly-Clearlake Capital leadership, has also been grossly inadequate on quality manpower acquisition, but very visually pulsatile on lavish spending in the transfer side of football, so far.

Part of that wastefulness on manpower was on Senegalese Nicolas Jackson’s €37 million signing from Villarreal and on the £52m the club splashed on the acquisition of France striker Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. The pair were purchased for the sole purpose of curbing Chelsea’s poor form of misfiring forward line.

While Nkunku succumbed to injury in pre-season football, Jackson has managed only 7 goals in 16 premier league outings, with just three of those involvements as substitute. His signing has not only failed to help the West Londoners curtail the continuing marksmanship problem at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea may again fail to land Champions League football next term.

With the prospect of Champions League football next term looking rather elusive, Chelsea’s best chance to sign the hot and in demand Napoli striker may be during the fast approaching January transfer season, just as the top priority for the Nigeria forward is UEFA champions League football. Osimhen will not be inclined to move to a team that will not feature in Champions League competition, sources close to the player claim.

‘Algeria aims to win Cup of Nations’

Everything you need to know about TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations

Algerian star, Youssef Belaili, opened up exclusively to CAFOnline.com about his remarkable experience with the Desert Foxes at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2019 when they clinched their second continental title.

The Mouloudia Alger star is the current top scorer in the Algerian league with 10 goals and eight assists in just 10 matches.

He reflected on his highs and lows with the Algerian national team during the African football extravaganza in Egypt in 2019 and two years later in Cameroon.

Belaili also shared insights into the ambitions of the Desert Foxes for the upcoming tournament in Cote d’Ivoire that starts next month.

CAFOnline.com: Several strong teams will participate in the TotalEnergies AFCON Cote d’Ivoire2023. How do you anticipate the level of competition?

Youssef Belaili: I expect the level to be good. African teams rely on physical aspects of the game, and we, in turn, have an excellent team. We will give our all to go far in the upcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

How do you see Algeria’s chances in AFCON, being placed in a group with Burkina Faso, Angola, and Mauritania?

We have an excellent team, and we will travel to Cote d’Ivoire to achieve a good result, and why not win the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of the Nations.

What can you say about the goals set by the coach of the Algerian national team for the TotalEnergies AFCON Cote d’Ivoire2023?

As you saw in the TotalEnergies AFCON Cameroon 2021, the pitch hindered us, and our participation was not successful. But in the Cote d’Ivoire edition, winning the title will be our goal, and we hope to win our third title.

If we go back to TotalEnergies AFCON Egypt 2019, how did you manage to win the title back then?

We were a united group and set winning the title as our goal. We gave everything to make the Algerian people happy, and by God’s grace, we succeeded. We aim to go far again in the Cote d’Ivoire finals.

You were one of the best players for the Algerian national team in the TotalEnergies AFCON Egypt 2019 edition. How was that experience?

It was a good experience, and it delighted our people. That is always our goal—to bring joy to the Algerian people. We tell our fans that good things are coming, and we will make you happy in the future.

What is your fondest memory of TotalEnergies AFCON Egypt 2019?

My fondest memory is the goal I scored against Senegal. It was a beautiful goal, especially as it officially secured our qualification to the second round of the competition at that time.

What do you remember about the penalty shootout you missed against the Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals of the 2019 edition?

There was pressure, and I took the last shot. I kicked it well, but it hit the post. I felt that the Ivorian player who was going to shoot behind me would miss his shot, and what I expected happened. We qualified for the semi-finals against Nigeria, and in the end, we won the Africa Cup and made our people happy.
