South Africa needed a decisive win against Italy to advance in Group G of the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and join Sweden in the round of 16-and win they did-snatching a 3-2 victory against Le Azzurre at the Sky Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, Wednesday.

In a game decided by mother luck, it was a tale of  contrasting fortunes for the pair of South Africa and Italy, as the winner were left to celebrate their luck, and the losers to rue their ill wind.

In the freezing cold in Wellington tonight (3 degrees !), Bayana Bayana snatched its win from the jaws of defeat as motherluck chose to smile on the Africans twice in the game in both halves of the match.

Mother luck began to show her hand early in Wellington when in the 10′, Beccari collected the ball skillfully with a neat initial caress that separates her from Dhlamini on the edge of the box, and who was unlucky to have slammed into her, gifting Le Azzurre a soft penalty.

Italy’s Caruso then stepped in, and while looking at the bottom right, craftily redirected her spot kick to the bottom left, with Swart in the South African goal, left glued in one spot on the goalline.

AT the same time in Hamilton, Italy resisted Argentina’s lush and fluid football, to hold on to their undefeated record record in the group as scores remained barren at the Waikato, while the Albicelestes continued to be resurgent.

In the 32′, Linari neat up a South African foray upfield, crosses to Orsi who swipes a backpass without checking whether her goalkeeper Durante was well positioned, to score an own goal, and aid the Africans to go level.

The first half ended 1-1 in Welling while in Hamilton, it was a goalless draw at the midway stage of the game there.

Then, finally came some equanimity and deft Swede play at the Waikato Stadium. Jakobsson received the ball in the 66′ on the right before teeing in a flawless square play for Blomqvist to nod in from a few yards for the Blågult’s first goal of the game.

As if on cue in the game in Wellington, Kgatlana broke away in the 67′, dancing forward, deceptive as ever, and swerving to an alluring rhythm that only her could hear, before ducking inside Orsi and slipping a nifty reverse pass into the path of Magaia, who in turn, drills a fine finish low into the far corner for South Africa to take the lead in Wellington.

As if undaunted, Girelli won a near-post header duel with an out-of-this-world vault, before flicking the ball from the corner into the middle which allowed Caruso to increase her body frame to shield the ball from her marker, before firing in the equalizer-it is now 2-2 in Wellington.

The referee pointed to the spot in the 89th minute in Hamilton after Blomqvist was toppled in the Argentine box by Chavez’s rugby-like tackle while defending a free-kick. Rubensson dispatched her penalty kick in the 90th minute after leaving the Argentine goalkeeper rooted to the same spot, and giving Sweden a deserved 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later in Wellington, it was mother luck again to the rescue for the South Africans. A ball appeared from nowhere down the right and Seoposenwe snatched it, before calmly making a cross that the near-flawless Magaia brushed into, before waltzing past her marker on the outside of the box, then squares for Kgatlana to stroke home from only a few yards.

South Africa’s 3-2 win is a historic first Women’s World Cup victory for Bayana Bayana. The shocking victory also afforded the Africans their first qualification out of the preliminary group stage of the tournament into the thrilling knockout segment of the competition.

Alex Pereira wants Israel Adesanya trilogy

Prefers it happening at middleweight, not light heavyweight

Alex Pereira has unfinished business with Israel Adesanya – at middleweight, reports Farah Hannoun and Ken Hathaway for the Miami Herald.

Pereira made good in his light heavyweight debut when he edged out Jan Blachowicz in this past Saturday’s UFC 291 co-main event. He expects to be fighting for the vacant 205-pound title next.

“Poatan” is 1-1 with middleweight champion Adesanya, who evened the score by knocking him out at UFC 287 in April. When asked if the rubber match would take place at Pereira’s new weight class, the former champion said he plans on dropping back down to middleweight to complete his trilogy with Adesanya.

“Before my last fight happened, when I made weight, I told the guys that for now I was going to be taking a break from the weight class,” Pereira told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at the UFC 291 post-fight news conference. “It was getting hard a little bit – too many cuts in a short span of time. So I went up to light heavyweight now.

“I want to do one more fight at light heavyweight, take some time from all those cuts, and then I actually want to fight in the lower weight class again – middleweight. In my mind, we are 1-1 at middleweight. I won one at middleweight, Israel won the other one, so nothing more fair than making the trilogy at middleweight.”

Although making 185 pounds wasn’t easy for Pereira, “Poatan” insists middleweight is still part of his plans.

“I feel good,” Pereira said. “I feel energized, recharged compared to the last other few weight cuts. This one was only 20 to 30 percent compared to the other ones. But like I said, I just need a little break to rest a little bit and I’m going to do some unfinished business at middleweight.”

Meanwhile, Farah Hannoun reports that middleweight champion Israel Adesanya approves of Alex Pereira’s performance at UFC 291.

Pereira (8-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) was successful in his light heavyweight debut when he edged out former champion Jan Blachowicz (29-10-1 MMA, 12-7-1 UFC) in this past Saturday’s co-headliner in Salt Lake City.

Adesanya gave a live reaction to Pereira’s performance while watching the fight, and praised him for his improved takedown defense.

“Beautiful try, but the boy got long legs man,” Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. “I’m telling you, he doesn’t want any space because once you give him space, he going to touch you. Beautiful defense. Good way to not balance himself – corrected it. Good lad.”

Israel Adesanya Reacts to INSANE UFC 291 Pay Per View

Pereira was taken down and controlled in Round 1, but was able to fend off Blachowicz’s dangerous rear-naked choke attempt. He rallied in Round 2 to win the striking exchanges against a tired Blachowicz, and managed to do enough to squeak out the win in a close third round.

All in all, Adesanya agreed with the result, and thought his former foe did well in his new division. He expects Pereira to earn the next crack at the vacant light heavyweight belt.

“Alex won – looked good at light heavyweight. Also, elevation – we have to consider that as well,” Adesanya said. “Crafty from Jan. He did the right thing to try and sneak the victory, but wasn’t enough. Alex now vs. Jiri (Prochazka) probably for the belt, I’m going to assume.”

Al-Hilal’s £1m weekly offer sways Osimhen

Player now torn by the lure of money following obscene £120m transfer bid for Napoli’s Nigeria forward

By Ed Emeanua

Victor Osimhen is reported to be leaning more on following the money trail following an eye-popping £860,000-per-week personal contract offer from rich Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, in an attempt to lure him from Italy to the Mid-Eastern country.

Sources close to the Nigeria forward’s agent Roberto Calenda revealed that while the Nigerian striker has been drawn strongly towards the whiff of money from the Arab Kingdom, his manager is however cautioning against the move.

Also, severe pressure from the family of the Napoli star man to go for the money and move to Al Hilal is adding more weight to the current situation in the player’s lengthy summer transfer saga.

Sources close to Osimhen revealed: “The possibility of earning £860,000-per-week for a player from the belly of one of the world’s poorest slums is just too much to resist.

“People should understand the temptation that the young man and his family are facing. Victor is a strong willed young man and a very sensible man. I believe he and his family know what is good for them and would make the right decision at the end of day.”

our source further revealed that the player is likely to be persuaded by his agent and not by his personal whims, and the additional pressure from his siblings.

“Victor has always taken his agent’s advise and I don’t see him doing otherwise this time,” our source said.

“No matter what happens, he will accept the professional decision of his agent. He has always done so. All these confusion will play out at the end in the interest of the young man.”

Following Kylian Mbappe’s snub, Al-Hilal have reportedly turned their transfer searchlight for a top striker to Osimhen with a shock £120m bid to Napoli for the Napoli forward.

The UK Daily Star reports that the Saudi Pro League outfit have now turned their searchlight to the 24-year-old Napoli forward, who scored 31 times in all outings last football term while landing the Serie A side its first Scudetto triumph since 1990.

Osimhen is now one of the most sought-after players in Europe, with interests pouring in from Chelsea and Manchester United for the services of the very prolific Nigeria striker.

Osimhen has reportedly been offered an £860,000-per-week contract, with Napoli being also handed a £120m transfer bid by Al Hilal, in an attempt to sway him to depart Italy for Saudi Arabia.

According to Sky Sports, Osimhen’s agent and Napoli have so far, failed to resolve their differences over a new contract. Also, an offer could be accepted by the striker’s club given Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis last month said he would be “willing to consider an offer we could not refuse,” or, one that is “obscene.”

The lingering question remains whether Napoli could consider Al Hilal’s £120m transfer bid for their man “obscene” enough to  sanction his move to Saudi Arabia, should Osimhen eventually push for a transfer.

Al-Hilal’s present interest in Osimhen emerged following their failure to acquire Mbappe despite already agreeing a world record £259m transfer fee with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

PSG was forced into the agreement to allow their talismanic forward to exit after Mbappe’s refusal to sign a new contract with Les Parisiens. With only one year remaining on his contract before PSG would be forced to let the France international to join a club of his choosing on a free transfer, Les Parisiens had no further say than to accept the offer.

However, Mbappe was to snub the move to Saudi Arabia throwing the relationship between club and player in limbo.

Nigeria played out a goalless draw with Ireland with Australia beating Canada 4-0 on Monday at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, in their final Group B games played simultaneously at the Brisbane Stadium, Brisbane, and Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne, in Australia respectively.

Ireland started started positively, with Farrelly and McCabe on the left causing early havoc and combining well to win The Girls in Green their first corner kick of the encounter in the 10′. But it is was Nigeria having the first clearer chance to score.

At this stage in Melbourne, Cooney-Cross’ lob was too high for Hunt’s initial header but a lobbed second ball into the exchanges is cleared by Canada. Australia came roaring back with Catley charging down the left off a feed by Foord. She squares the ball to the top of the box and through to Raso, who takes a touch before drilling it low into the bottom left corner of the Canadian post. There was an initial question about an offside flag on the far side, but VAR ultimately ruled it a goal.

Australia’s 10th minute goal rockets the Matildas to the top of Group B, while Nigeria hangs on in second place over a rampant Ireland offensive football.

In the 15′, Quinn gave the ball away to Kanu, who slips Oshoala through, but the Nigeria forward drags her shot too far past Brosnan in the Irish goalpost.

Again and in Melbourne, Australia go 2-0 up, with Raso scoring her second in the 39′. Catley wins a corner on the left. Cooney-Cross plays it overhead, Sheridan failed to fist it over Kennedy, allowing the ball to ping off a Canadian defender and falling  into the path of Raso who would not allow herself to miss from so near the goal line.

The half-time ended with the Matildas 2-0 ahead of the Canucks and The Girls in Green scoreless against the Super Falcons.

The Africans started the second half on the front foot scuttling into a corner kick in the very first minute of the half but Payne’s square play from the right flank failed her and her teammates.

In the 51′, Payne’s great feet on the left sets her loose, allowing her to whip in a cross into the box which Kanu heads down on the six-yard line. Her powerful header bounces in front of Brosnan, who somehow tips the ball onto the underside of the bar and out of the danger zone.

It’s all Nigeria at the moment. In the 55′, Alozie has been showing off her clever feet in this second half down the right. Her combination with Ajibade and Payne have been threatening the defensive end of The Girls in Green.

In Melbourne, in a Brilliant counterattacking play in the 58th, Catley releases Foord, her Arsenal teammate, on the left to beat the offside trap, then ghosts into the box, holds off two defenders before pulling the ball back from the byline for Fowler to stroke over the line from 4 metres out.  Australia are 3-0 up and through to the next round for sure.

However, it was Ireland who had a better chance in Brisbane, with O’Sullivan finding some room in Nigeria’s box in the 60′, but her shot is blocked, allowing Nnadozie to mop up the loose ball.

Full-time in the match in Brisbane after 90+3′ and Nigeria are through in second place and set for a likely date with England in the round of 16.

Elsewhere in Melbourne, VAR replays prove Gorry was clattered into by Fleming’s lousy challenge centimeters inside the box. A penalty is awarded to the co-hosts.

Australia’s stand-in skipper steps up to slam it into the right top corner of the post and her second penalty of the tournament, curling a left-footed effort wide of Sheridan’s dive. The Matildas are into the round of 16 as Group B leaders and Nigeria are going through as the Group’s runners up.

Japan have beaten Spain 4-0 at the Sky Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand on Monday, to usurp Group C bragging rights and progresses to the round of 16 where they would now face Group A runners up, Norway.

Spain and Japan Women were yet to clash with each other in a World Cup game, setting the stage for a refreshing initial head-to-head recounter between them. In the second final match of the Group Costa Rica’s Las Ticas lost 1-3 to Shepolopolo of Zambia at the FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Spain, as Group C runners up will face Group A winners Switzerland in the round of 16, just as Zambia and Costa Rica must now depart New Zealand having been eliminated from the tournament.

Both Japan and Spain had already booked their knockout stage qualification from the Group ahead of their last Group game against each other, with the remaining impetus for competitiveness left for the pair being the bragging rights for the leadership.

For this game, Japan ran five changes, as against one for Spain. Hana Takahishi, Fuko Nagano, Jun Endo, Hinata Miyazawa and Riko Ueki took the place of Shiori Miyake, Yui Hasegawa, Hina Sugita, Aoba Fujino and Mina Tanaka. For Spain, Rocio Galvez replaced the injured Ivana Andres.

Spain starting XI: Misa; Batlle, Paredes, Rocio, Olga; Abelleira, Bonmati, Putellas; Paralluelo, Hermoso, Mariona.

Japan starting XI: Yamashita, Takahashi, Kumagai, Minami; Shimizu, Nagano, Hayashi, Endo; Naomoto, Ueki, Miyazawa.

Costa Rica starting XI: Solera, Fabiola Villalobos, Benavides, Campo; Coto, Gloriana Villalobos, Alvarado, Rodriguez; Herrera, Scott, Chinchilla.

Zambia starting XI: Musonda, Belemu, Musesa, Mweemba, Tembo; Susan Banda, Chanda, Katongo; Chitundu, Barbra Banda, Kundananji.

Japan kicked off the game but it was Spain who took the initiative right from the blast of central referee Ekaterina Katja Koroleva of USA. Spain have started brilliantly. In yet again another spell of captivating football possession, in the 5th minute, Carmona drives a cross from the left that just eludes the stretching legs of Bonmati, who arrived a little late in the box.

Spain continued to enjoy total possession of the ball with Japan looking very comfortable in their defensive shape early on. In a moment of sporadic counter attacking display, Spain’s tenacity for scintillating possession counted for less as Japan scores the game’s first goal through sheer demonstration of efficiency and clinical finishing in the 12′.

Japan's Riko Ueki celebrates after scoring her side's second goal against Spain.Japan’s Riko Ueki celebrates after scoring her side’s second goal against Spain. Photograph: John Cowpland/AP

Just as it was clinical, the crafting of the goal itself was majestic, as Nadeshiko dealt Spain a major blow for their high line. Endo, on the left near the halfway line, found space to curl a piercing pass around the Spanish defense. It eluded Ueki couldn’t, but not Miyazawa, who emerged out of a mist from nowhere to slide a left-foot shot past Rodriguez in the 14′.

Now what did Spain do? Back to same plot of course. For another half an hour La Roja continued to dominate while Japan kept their shape. In yet another swift counter-attacking foray after Minami had cleared a forward pass on the edge of her own area, only moments later, Japan were 2-0 up.

The Copper Queens found the net in the 2nd minutes of the match, with Lushomo Mweemba scoring the Zambia’s first-ever Women’s World Cup goal.

The weaponized vapor of Ueki headed Minami’s clearance in Nagano’s path, who in turn cushioned a neat pass into the run of Miyazawa. She set Ueki free on the left side of the area for a one versus one against Paredes. Cutting inside on her right foot, Ueki hit a drive that deflected off Paredes and looped over Rodriguez. Japan’s second goal in the 29th minute through Riko Ueki was the clear expression of their superior masterplan.

For Spain, as if bereft of any other approach, they were yet to learn anything from the mistake of their high line against a nifty side like Nadeshiko.

After a couple of neat passing work to create space on the halfway line, Ueki ran at a Spain defense running in the direction of their back. She wisely waited for support to arrive from Miyazawa, then played an angled through ball to her teammate. Miyazawa knocked it into space with her left foot and lifted it emphatically over Rodriguez with her right. What a majestic finish for a fantastic team in the 40th minute of the tie.

At the same time at the Waikato Stadium, Zambia were waltzing to a 2-0 lead over Costa Rica in the game in which respect was the only thing on the line.

Then Barbra Banda, the captain of the Zambian team drew the foul in the box to earn a penalty kick, which she then drilled into the net herself to double her side’s advantage. Her goal was also a record setter as it marked the 1,000th goal in Women’s World Cup history.

Both Zambia and Japan took their first half leads intact to the half-time break. In the second half, Spain continued their slow buildups while Japan maintained their resolute defensive formation. Though it must be said that La Roja had ample of opportunities to make the scoreline respectable in the second half, their lack of clinical approach in their finishing was their greatest undoing.

In Hamilton, Costa Rica commenced second half proceedings by scoring their first goal of the game and the tournament after Zambia allowed the ball to bobble around in their box from a corner kick.

Daphne Melissa Herrera Monge bundled the ball into the net in the 47th minute to score Costa Rica’s historic first ever goal of the Women’s World Cup.

In the 82′, Japan again presented her lethal counter-attacking style for the world to see. With just 22 per cent possession, five shots, and now four goals up, this is simply, the counter-attacking showcase for all ages. Substitute Mina Tanaka turned Galvez neatly on the right, ignored a lack lustered impediment from Batlle, applied Paredes as a shield and hammered the ball into the top side of the net with her left foot.

It was a captivating finish for the Asians against one of Europe’s finest side at the 2023 Women’s World Cup tournament. What a brilliance!

Then, at the Waikato, Herrera crosses in a lovely ball, Zambia’s goalkeeper Musonda gets a touch to it but her spill almost sees it in but Musesa is there to clear off the line. Zambia counter and of course it is Kundananji hitting in a 90+3′ goal to take Shepolopolo 3-1 ahead.

Chelsea wins Premier League Summer Series

Beats Fulham to give Mauricio Pochettino a perfect start to the season

Chelsea have defeated Fulham 2-0 at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, to win the Premier League Summer Series, and hand new boss Mauricio Pochettino, his perfect start to the season.

Aston Vila’s 3-3 draw with Brentford before Chelsea took to the field, gave ‘The Blues’ an inkling that nothing short of an outright win would give them the crown as Villa enjoyed the better goal advantage.

First-half goals from Thiago Silva and Christopher Nkunku gave a new-look Chelsea side the edge, just as the Stamford Bridge outfit seized the initiative of a west London derby staged on US soil.

Silva headed in a Ben Chilwell cross from the corner flag, with Nkunku firing in from close range following Bernd Leno in Fulham goalposts futile effort to stop a goal-bound shot, and only parrying the shot into his path, allowing Nkunku to score his second of the championship.

Despite Chelsea’s handing a start to their 19-year-old American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, Fulham could failed to test the teenager or even trouble Lucas Bergstrom, his substitute, managing just a lone shot on target the entire game.

The high point of the game for Fulham fans was the inclusion of new arrivals, Raul Jimenez and Calvin Bassey, with both stars playing their first game for the side, after their move from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ajax in that order.

The low side for both teams however, were likely injury blows, with captain Tom Cairney substituted by Fulham due to a suspected hamstring injury, with Trevoh Chalobah lasting just 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the second-half .

Chelsea’s win means they remain undefeated in pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino, having ended their Summer Series engagements with two wins and a tie.

The Blues have just one pre-season game left on 2 August, against Borussia Dortmund , before taking on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on 13 August, in their Premier League opener.

Blonde boxing sensation Ebanie Bridges has dazzled her fans by showing off one of her outfits whilst out in Las Vegas.

Ahead of the highly anticipated bout between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford, where they will fight for the undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO welterweight world titles, Bridges took to Twitter to show off her dazzling white dress.

The low-cut white number will certainly have left some fans with raised pulses, with the 36-year-old seemingly enjoying her trip whilst smiling in the mirror. She captioned her post: “Oh heyyyy #SpenceCrawford”.

The Australian boxer also uploaded another three snaps alongside her white dress photo, one of which highlighted the sheer mad weather out in Las Vegas right now.

Bridges, who is a self-confessed Leeds United fan, took a photo whilst on the Las Vegas streets, adding the temperature Instagram filter to her snap.

And fans will have seen that the blonde bombshell is having to deal with plenty of sun and heat in the US, with the temperature sitting at a disgustingly hot 43 degrees.

A third commented: “Booom….. the Bomber is back!!!!” And a fellow Leeds fan who was also in Las Vegas sent the boxer a selfie with his family.

Astrid Wett hospitalized by boxing opponent

After being slammed through table by boxing opponent

OnlyFans star Astrid Wett was seen being carried by paramedics on a stretcher after being slammed through a table by Alexia Grace before their boxing match, reports Shay Robson for Dexerto Entertainment.

After taking down AJ Bunker on Misfits Series 005 in March, Astrid Wett has been itching to get back in the ring. However, the self-proclaimed ‘female champion’ has had no luck, becoming frustrated with KSI’s boxing promotion claiming that they’ve shown her “no support” in arranging another bout.

Since then, the OnlyFans star has taken matters into her own hands, kicking off Wett Promotions to arrange her own fights. After things heated up between her and Alexia Grace in May, when the two got into a scuffle at the KSI vs Joe Fournier press conference, Alexia was first on the hit list.

The two were expected to go blow for blow on July 29, with the event being streamed live on YouTube. However, before the two even stepped in the ring, it ended in complete disaster, resulting in Astrid being carried out of the venue by paramedics on a stretcher.

Before the two OnlyFans stars even put the gloves on and stepped in the ring, Astrid slapped Alexia across the face while staring down at each other, where her opponent responded by slamming her straight through a table next to them.

It was clear that Astrid was injured, where the broadcast was then quickly cut to an intermission screen. Moments later, the camera briefly cut back, showing Astrid being treated by two paramedics before the stream ultimately ended.

Shortly after, Astrid’s management shared on Twitter a photo of the OnlyFans star lying in the back of an ambulance on a stretcher. “Astrid is in stable condition. Please respect her and her teams privacy at this time,” the tweet read.

In another tweet, her management put concerns to rest, assuring fans that Astrid is okay and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Thank you everyone for your concern. Astrid is going to be fine – she’s expected to make a full recovery. We appreciate your support so much.”

here have since been no more updates on Astrid’s condition.

Colombia shock Germany in Women’s World Cup

Norway enter knockout stage after big win over Philippines

Manuela Vanegas headed a stoppage-time winner to give Colombia a 2-1 upset victory over Germany just when the two-time world champions thought they had saved a point in a thrilling Women’s World Cup clash at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday, Reuters reports.

The defender powered the ball home from a corner eight minutes after German striker Alexandra Popp had converted a penalty to cancel out a stunning strike from Colombian teenager Linda Caicedo.

Caicedo, who gave her team a fright by collapsing in training on Thursday, had delighted the massed ranks of her compatriots in the 40,499 crowd with a goal of the highest quality in the 52nd minute.

The Colombians tore into the match from the kickoff and the Germans looked rattled not only by their aggression but also by the deafening noise of their yellow-shirted fans.

Popp, who scored two goals against the Moroccans, should have added to her tournament tally in the 42nd minute but blazed her volley high and wide from close range.

Colombia continued to launch the ball forward to their front players at every opportunity but it was not until seven minutes after the break that they were able to break the stalemate.

Caicedo, 18, gathered the ball on the left edge of the box, cut back between two defenders and curled it into the top right-hand corner.

The diminutive teenager celebrated her second goal at the tournament, having become the youngest player to score in this World Cup with a similar effort in the 2-0 opening win over South Korea.

Germany continued to spurn what chances they created but, with two minutes left on the clock, Oberdorf was brought down in the box by Perez and Popp stepped up to thump the ball confidently into the net.

Colombia then clinched the game seven minutes into added time to add more drama to the tournament.

The 27th-ranked Colombians now need only a draw against Morocco in their final Group H match to be certain of reaching the last 16, while Germany are still likely to progress if they beat South Korea in their last fixture.

Meanwhile, Norway coach Hege Riise said it was a relief to see her team move on from a divisive week as they beat the Philippines 6-0 at Eden Park and squeaked into the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup on goal difference.

The former champions had everything on the line for Sunday’s final group-stage affair after they lost to New Zealand and were held to a scoreless draw against Switzerland.

As though that pressure was not enough, they had the added task of restoring harmony on a fractured team after winger Caroline Graham Hansen lashed out over the decision to start her on the bench against Switzerland.

“We’ve been through this week together. We talk as a team and individuals and today, the last couple of days, you can see the energy coming back within the team and they believed this game might be the last game,” Riise told reporters.

Striker Sophie Roman Haug scored a hat-trick against the Philippines and Graham Hansen’s first-half goal helped to justify her place in the starting team, while Guro Reiten also scored.

Crawford treats Spence Jr ‘specially’

Terence Crawford made Errol Spence Jr look like just another opponent on Saturday

Terence Crawford completely outclassed Errol Spence Jr on Saturday night. He became undisputed welterweight champion of the world, the second time he’s become an undisputed champion, the first male fighter to do that in the four-belt era, Scott Christ reports for Bad Left Hook.

For years, Crawford heard from various angles that he hadn’t fought anyone, that he would struggle if he had been with Premier Boxing Champions, the outfit that all but owned the 147 lbs division. Never mind that Crawford had won a title at 135 and gone undisputed at 140.

But it wasn’t an entirely illogical argument, even with Crawford passing every eye test with flying colors. After moving up to 147 in 2018, Crawford’s resume consisted of Jeff Horn, Jose Benavidez Jr, Amir Khan, Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, and David Avanesyan.

Those aren’t bad fighters, mind you, any of them. But two of them — Brook and Porter — had already been beaten soundly by his PBC counterpart, Spence, who had also scored dominant wins over Lamont Peterson, Carlos Ocampo, Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas. He picked up three world titles along the way, starting by stopping Brook in 2017, going overseas just as Crawford had to win his first world title.

When you really break it down, it’s arguable the gap between the resumes isn’t that huge, but Spence was beating a lot of the names, because PBC had pretty much all the names.

Other than Crawford, who was signed with Top Rank. Cross-promotional and cross-network politics are up there among boxing’s biggest problems when it comes to delivering what fans want to see, and it took a few years for Spence and Crawford to finally get together, about 20 months after Crawford left Top Rank behind, saying on stage directly next to promoter Bob Arum that they had failed to deliver the big fight, and it was time for him to leave.

Saturday was expected to be competitive. The odds were narrow for a marquee boxing event, with “Bud” the slight favorite over Spence. And for a round, it looked like it might be a tactical affair, both looking to find the rhythm.

Crawford found it in round two. And then it was all Terence Crawford.

Spence Jr v Crawford: LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – JULY 29: Errol Spence Jr. punches Terrence Crawford in round 1

Two days before the fight, Crawford said, “Everything about me is better than Errol. When you look at what I do in the ring, it’s better than what he does. Come fight night, I’m going to prove every doubter wrong. I’m going to show that I’m the best fighter in the world.”

If he didn’t do that, he didn’t do anything. Everything about him was better than Errol. He proved every remaining doubter or skeptic wrong.

And it’s hard to say, with all due respect to the great Naoya Inoue, that Terence Crawford didn’t prove he was the best fighter in the world.

His fellow pros were in awe of what Terence achieved, as he battered Spence, bloodied him, dominated him, and dropped him three times before referee Harvey Dock mercifully stopped a one-sided affair in round nine.

Offering congratulations, Canelo Alvarez told Crawford, “You are a fucking great fighter. Well deserved.” Many proclaimed Crawford to be the clear top dog in the sport, pound-for-pound; again, it’s really hard to say he isn’t.

What Terence Crawford did against Errol Spence Jr was special. One commenter on this site during the live discussion compared it to the 2009 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, where a great fighter was just taken apart by a really great fighter, and I think that stands.

Crawford is, to use a meme phrase sincerely, built different. It’s not just skills, it’s not just the spite he has in his style, it’s not just hard work or confidence or his completely unflappable demeanor. It’s all of it. He is a complete package as a fighter, physically and mentally. He is truly, truly great.

There probably will be a rematch. It’s in the contract. Spence seems to have absolutely no interest in doing it again at 147 — meaning if Crawford insists on that, Spence may waive his right to the rematch — but Crawford sounds totally open to doing it at 154, noting that he also has to cut down to make weight, and as he approaches his 36th birthday, that won’t be getting easier.

He’s talked about moving up before, and with the money on the table for Crawford vs Spence 2 — and Terence will have his name first next time, without question — it might be hard to pass that up to stay at welterweight and fight someone like Jaron “Boots” Ennis, with full respect to Ennis.

But a rematch is for another time, and whether it’s needed or not isn’t even really part of the discussion. If they agree on the terms, it will happen.

For now, it is simply about appreciating Terence Crawford as quite possibly the best fighter in boxing’s post-Mayweather/Pacquiao era. In the biggest fight of his career, against the biggest test of his career, he made an elite fighter look no better equipped to deal with him than Jeff Horn or David Avanesyan were.

Give him the credit. All of it. Because he’s earned it and then some. He didn’t just win, he conquered.
