Spain became the lowest ranked team on number 6 to win the Women’s World Cup with an Olga Carmona lone goal effort to defeat England Sunday at the Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Spain a first-time winner, now join previous champions the United States (1991, 1999, 2015, 2019), Norway (1995), Germany (2003, 2007) and Japan (2011) in this elite catalogue.

Thirty two began this journey  a month ago and we are now left with the last two. England kicked off the game at Stadium Australia, as both teams eagerly begin their dream to record the first Women’s World Cup victory for their country.

On 3′, Spain begin to get into their groove with first productive touches on the ball. Lax England defensive line plays La Roja’s Salma in off Aitana’s feed. The Barça player then tried to wing it to her support-Ona-who but the cross is too heavy into the box and England is spared early blushes.
The first shot of the game came from Hemp in the 5th minute, who has started this tie on the front foot. The forward is on the end of a bouncing ball from a throw-in in the box but could only direct a weak shot which goalkeeper Cata Coll easily deals with.

By the 9th minute mark, Spain have dominated possession so far as they continue to build up their with patient progression. Their passing has very been good with brilliance of skills and fluidity, but England have so far managed to make the decisive intervention at the right moment.

On 13′, England got their first corner kick. It is whipped in from the right side of the field with a looping delivery, but Coll rises high above all in her goal area to easily cuddle the ball before it could pose any more danger.

Salma Paralluelo has continued to pose a threatening presence for the La Roja backline. The Spain attacker has created some runs from the left flank and has already asked some questions of the England defense. On 15′, Spain continue to probe for a way in through the Lionesses defense, and look the more threatening side so far.

However, it was England’s Hemp hitting the cross bar a minute later. Daly laid on a ball in her path outside the box, as Hemp is stationed just right of centre the area. The England forward went for testing the Spain keeper with a curling effort, but ended up clipping the crossbar instead. What a close shave for England.

On 18′, it was the turn of the England keeper to go on the receiving end. Spain was on a swift counter, with Paralluelo once again in the thick of the affront on the English backline. The lithe attacker whipped in a cross from the left side of her team’s end of the field which finds Abelleira about five yard out, forcing her to make a go at the far post, but Mary Earps takes the ball easily.

The game is on a roil as both sides even exchange with telling blows, but so far the parity of the scoreline remains unchanged. Spain is still enjoying more of the possession in line with their unique style of play.

On the other hand, England is also sticking to the book, mindful of their need to settle into this contest by not allowing the Spaniards too much room to for creativity.

On 25′, England won a freekick and Stanway is charged with taking it from about 40 metres out, right in the centre of Spain’s goal area outside the box. Stanway’s delivery is an however inadequate test for Spain’s defense and they are able to intercept and send the ball away from the danger line.
Finally, the goal and the deadlock is broken on 29′ by the left back Olga Carmona who takes it for Spain. Spain had picked up the ball at the halfway line, with Caldentey easily locating Carmona on her left side inside the box. Carmona planted her shot along the grass to the far post bottom corner, sending Spanish fans into ecstasy.

This was a well deserved goal for Spain, which will now leave England with no other option than to play on knowing they have their work cut out to get back into this match. England had continued to do what they should not have done-allow Spain to express themselves-in this match.

England began to up their intensity following Spain’s taking the lead in the game. However, a double drive at goal failed to yield dividend in the final third, but the Lionesses are ratcheting up the gears after the stunning effort from the Spanish captain.

On 33′, Spain remained solid as their tactics continued to push the European champions on the backfoot. Sarina Wiegman would only look on as her side continue to doing their best to keep Spain at arm’s length.

On 37′, a free kick is taken from the left side, finding Bright who volleys the ball away from her danger area, but her kick ends up finding Paredes inside the box on the right side. The Spaniard fires in a shot at the near post, but ends up missing the mark, much to the relief of a concerned Earps.

Spain will take their 1-0 lead into the break. In the second half, Spain’s Jennifer Hermoso had a penalty saved by England goalkeeper Earps in the second half. Spain drove into the box as their pressure in the England danger area forced the ball to brush the hand of England’s Keira Walsh.

After VAR had reviewed the incident, Center referee Tori Penso also took time to check the video for confirmation of a penalty kick award to Spain.

The Spanish maintained impressive control and edge in possession, 46%-37%, also edging out England on attempts on goal, 14-7, as well as shots on target, 5-3.

Though, Spain’s skipper Carmona’s goal in the 29th minute produced the winner, the margin of the win could have been wider since Hermoso’s had a low spot-kick shot saved by England’s goalkeeper Earps in the second half.

Also, Paralluelo appeared to have sealed the game with a strike from inside the area, but England’s Lucy Bronze blocked it from going into her net as another goal for Spain.

A massive 13 minutes of added time by the referee failed to provide England an avenue for reprieve, as their desperate search for the equalizer remained elusive.

Despite England’s desperations and futile enterprise, the added time was deserving considering the time taken to treat England’s Alex Greenwood, who unfortunately got hammered by a knee to the head. The VAR review that led to a penalty also contributed to the extended play.

Teams of this season’s league appear to be bringing out the heavy hitters early on as hopes and aspirations clash with trepidation over failure and fear of the unknown. The overarching aphorism now seems to be; if you can’t make top seven, at least steer clear of the bottom 3 finishes. Cut to the chase and let it rip!

Friday, August 18

The premier league is now regarded as the most exciting league in the world and rightly so. The English league is renown for its fast pace, skillfulness, and plenty of drama to spare. Season 2023-2024 is not going to be an exception.

Notts Forest Versus Sheffield United: Nottingham Forest’s Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi is hot, take that back-red hot-and there is no gainsaying the fact. It is two out of two for the Super Eagles forward who has now found the net two weeks consecutively this term for his run of the mill team.

Awoniyi struck early against newly promoted Sheffield United in the 3rd minute of the week 2 fixture at City Ground on Friday, with Gustavo Hamer restoring parity in the 38th minute to score scores at halftime to 1 all. Chris Wood left it to late on before scoring Forest’s winner in the 89th minute of the thrilling encounter.

Wood’s 89′ winner is his clubs latest premier league winning goal matching Alf Inge Haaland’s 89′ winner against Arsenal in December of 1996. On the other hand, Sheffield United have now lost every one of their last 16 away games in the premier league that they had conceded had fallen behind first.

Taiwo Awoniyi is the second Nottingham Forest star to score in six consecutive premier league matches following Stan Collymore in the 1994-1995 term. Awoniyi’s six scoring runs now surpasses all Nigerian goal scoring stretches in the premier league, only eclipsed by the run of two other African stars in Liverpool striker Mohammed Salah of Egypt and Togolese forward Emmanuel Adebayo, both with 7 scoring runs.

Despite the Luton Town clash with Burnley already being rescheduled, it was already given that this Saturday’s premier league fixtures, like all those before it, was certainly going to be interesting.

Fulham FC Versus Brentford: Though this one was certainly going to be tough to predict, preceding it, nobody saw its eventual outcome coming. Last week, Fulham went rocking at Goodison Park, edging out an unpredictable Everton side in a famous 1-0 away win. However, Fulham took their remarkable failure to win their opening two league matches to a seven consecutive run-the last time they achieved that beat being in season 2016-2017 of the Championship under Slavisa Jokanovich.

This week it was the turn of the Cottagers to rue their home ill luck after allowing the visitors to run amok enroute to a 3-0 away victory at Craven Cottage. Yoane Wissa opened scoring for the visitors on 44′ before Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo’s second half braces on 66′ (penalty kick), and 90 + 2′ sealed the win for the Bees.

Nigeria international midfielder Frank Onyeka for the second consecutive week failed to make the Brentford matchday team while compatriot, defender Calvin Bassey featured as a 67′ substitute for Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed. Brentford have now matched their 11 consecutive unbeaten run against a London opponent (W6, D5).

This is their joint longest unbeaten run in the first four tiers against teams from London, matching their 11 game run from February 1954 through August 1955. Fulham’s last seven losses in the premier league by 3 + goal margin were all in home defeats, starting from their 1-4 massacre at Watford in April 2019 under Scott Parker.

Liverpool FC Versus AFC Bournemouth

Jaidon Anthony seemed to have scored the opening goal for the visitors before it was disallowed

Mohammed Salah finds the net for Liverpool

Luis Diaz on target for Liverpool

The Reds need a return to consistency in winning games and they need this is the only way they can remain in serious contention for the premier league shield. Jürgen Klopp’s loss last term was Josep “Pep” Guardiola Sala’s gain as Manchester United outstared all to won the shield in 2022-2023.

Having tied thier week one clash with Chelsea 1-1 at Stamford Bridge last week, Liverpool need all the spoils that are up for grab to make a statement. And just that they did, with Luis Diaz (28′), Mo’ Salah (36′), and Diogo Jota (62′) all scoring, with Alexis Mac Allister red carded.

Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring in the 3′ and accounted for Bournemouth’s lone goal in their 1-3 loss at Anfield, Saturday. Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last 13 premier league matches at home, with 10 wins and 3 draws to the bargain.

The Reds are also yet to taste defeat in their first home encounter of any of their top flight encounters over 20 seasons (W15, D5). This stretch of record extends to the 2004-2005 season.

Bournemouth away loss despite their early goal on 3′ means the Cherries have now lost their last five premier league clashes against the Reds at Anfield by a combined score of 20-2. All in all, Bournemouth have only left Anfield with a point from 21 on offer in the premier league (P7, L6, D1).

Egypt international Salah becomes the first Reds player to either score or assist in goal scoring in 10 back-to-back games out of 10 at Anfield. The Liverpool striker is also the first player to do so in the top flight since Jamie Vardy of Leicester in December of 2015 (with 10 goals as well).

Wolverhampton Wanderers Versus Brighton & Hove Albion

Kaoru Mitoma 15′, Pervis Estupiñán 46, Solly March 51′, 55′ scored to put the Seagulls up 4-0 at Molineux Stadium Saturday. South Korea forward Hwang Hee Chan 61′ found the net for the Wanderers to bring the final scores to 4-1. Wanderers’  Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes was red carded on 90 + 5.

The win brings the away sides win of the opening 2 games in top flight football to only 2 after doing so in the 2021-2022 seasons. Their highest joint scoring in their opening two games in the league is 8 in 1999, same number they have also scored at the week 2 stage this term.

Wolves have let in 4 goals in their first league match at home in any season just once since the 2003-2004 term, same number of goals they conceded at Molineux Saturday against the visitors.

Tottenham Hotspur versus Manchester United

In sensational fashion Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with goals from Pape Matar Sarr 49′ and Lisandro Martinez 83′ (OG) to take all the spoils on offer and leave their famous visitors empty handed. Manchester United was roundly beaten by a comprehensively composed Spurs side within their elements. Anything short of a victory for the London team would have been an injustice.

Spurs have somehow been able to find life without former Spurs forward Harry Kane still profitable in front of goal since the departure of the prolific England striker to Bayern Munich this month. The victory means that finally, Spurs have defeated the Red Devils in a premier league match at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium but it took them a total of 5 games (D2, L2, W1) to do so.

Senegal defensive midfielder Pape Sarr becomes the second youngest to score for Spurs in the premier league aged 20 years and 339 days, following in the footsteps of Juan Foyth who scored against Crystal Palace in November 2018 aged 20 years and 302 days.

Manchester City Versus Newcastle United

Champions Manchester City continued their form in their premier league title defense going 100 percent with another victory against rivals Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium Saturday. The Citizens took down visiting Newcastle by a lone goal.

Argentina forward Julián Álvarez’ 31′ strike made all the difference in the encounter as the Magpies could not find the mettle to erase City’s lead. The lost means that Newcastle have now lost their last 15 games away to the Citizens in the premier league. This represents the Magpies’ longest ever away losing streak against any opponent in their league record.

Sweden women’s national team stretched their unbeaten run in World Cup third-place finishes to four, through Fridolina Rolfo and Kosovare Asllani goals Saturday in a masterful 2-0 win over co-hosts, Australia,  in the third-place playoff match at Lang Park in Brisbane.

The Blue and yellow are now four out of four in third-place triumphs at the Women’s World cup with their victory over the Matildas at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, through goals from Fridolina Rolfo and Kosovare Asllani.

All the same, the losing side are still short of making their first-ever Mondial cup podium climb despite recording their initial semi-finals Women’s World Cup berth in the current edition of the game.

“It feels amazing. We showed from minute one, we were the better team,” Rolfo, who scored Sweden’s first goal in the game said afterwards. “We deserve this medal.”

Single goal a half, ensured that the clinical Swedes should find success as their persistent attacking forays and crisp finishing paid off.

Australia were without doubt, a very spirited foe that was further buoyed by a possessed but appreciated home crowd, but for all the right foot they put forward in the encounter, Matildas just were not meant to win.

Sweden’s victory made Blue and yellow the first national team to win the third place game four times at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

European champion England and Spain are scheduled for a showdown in Sunday’s final in Sydney, and Sweden’s win means European nations will now end first, second and third on the podium.

For the Matildas, FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 saw a disappointing end for a national side that enthralled their country with their performance that saw Australia reach semifinals for the first time.

While resigned to end another World Cup with a loss, the Matildas still somehow emerged from all of it with their best outcome at the event having never before now, progressed farther than the quarter-final stage.

The championship that is being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand has already seen attendance records set and then broken, with two of Australia’s matches having stood out as the most-watched programs on Australian commercial TV in 20 years.

“We wanted to win, we wanted to have some hardware to take home. Wasn’t to be,” Sam Kerr said.

“The way the fans have got behind us, the way girls have carried themselves, I think we’ve proven to the world we are a footballing nation. We couldn’t get it done tonight, but hopefully we’ve inspired people for many years to come.”

The Swedes began sprightly and should have made a dream start with Blackstenius directing a low shot across goal in the opening minute, had her effort not pawed clear by Arnold, then booted off the danger area by defender Ellie Carpenter.

Having found their passing rhythm, the Matildas soon began pouring forward in torrents on counter attacks through Hayley Raso but the Australia’s winger’s effort was blocked. Raso was turned down again midway through the half by Sweden goalkeeper  Zecira Musovic, whose fine save kept the Matildas’ attacker at bay.

Sweden was the most dominant of the sides for most of the encounter, maintaining a tight and cohesive shape as well as unearthing and taking advantage of cracks in Matildas’ defense.

Sweden, the third ranked women’s team in the world, were awarded a penalty in the 28th minute after a VAR review showed Australia’s Clare Hunt clipped Stina Blackstenius’ heels, allowing Rolfo score the spot kick. The decision was very well roundly booed by the capacity crowd of 49,461.

That was after Rolfo had crashed her header against the bar from Asllani’s sensational pullout. As the pace of the game picked up, Arnold made an eye-catching low save to redirect Rolfo’s free kick from goal in the closing minutes of the half.

Moments after Australia coach Tony Gustavsson initiated his first changes, the Matildas fell further behind. Australia had pushed forward in numbers but soon appeared out of vigor and purpose.

Their attempts at a comeback were impeded when star striker Sam Kerr copped a knock late on and Sweden sealed the game with ease.

Sweden captain Asllani increased the Blue and Yellow’s lead just outside the hour mark, scoring off her shot from the perimeter of the penalty area on the farther side of goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, from yet another another fast counter-attacking play.

Asllani’s polished and insightful finish from a break saw her being greeted by her ecstatic team mates.

FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts Australia failed to bestride a surge of Women’s World Cup intensity after falling to rivals England 1-3 in their semifinal game at Stadium Australia, in Sydney on Wednesday.

world cup

England now advances to their first ever final of the FIFA championship which will take place on Sunday when they will clash with Spain for the main prize of the championship.

Australia prevailed to the semifinal for the first time following victory over France in a thrilling penalty shootout, while England notched third shot of making the final following their overpowering of Colombia 2-1 in the last eight.

The Matildas could become the third hosts to win this tournament after the USA in 1999 and their first round of last two qualification equaled USA’s records of 1999 and 2003 for a host nation reaching the semifinal.

The Matildas were clearly bullied out of making the final match by the Lionesses silencing the nationalistic fervor of an expectant nation three times with goals from the boots of Ella Toone (36′), Lauren Hemp (71), and Alessia Russo (86).

Three times, Matilda switched off completely and three times, the Lionesses made them pay. But the highlight of the game was Sam Kerr’s 63′ goal of the tournament which captivated the soccer world and ignited some hope in the Matildas.

It was also the 64th goal of the illustrious career of Matildas star woman and gave credence to the special qualities of the Australian captain.

The Chelsea striker had been in scintillating form this past season, finding the net 29 times in 38 appearances for the Blues, but missed the group stage of the tournament due to a calf injury.

Her being named in the starting XI, increased the hopes of Australia fans over the chances of Matildas progress even more.

Toone began the Lionesses precise mission for a peculiarly smashup of the hope of the Aussie nation with her 36th minute strike.

Hemp did exceptionally well near the byline, before hooking the ball into the danger zone, Australia failed to clear the danger, and Toone thrusts the ball from 10m out, sending it with precision at ferocious pace into the top corner of the net for England’s first goal of the match.

Before Toone’s opening strike, Matildas’ Hayley Raso intercepted a cross on the right side in the 33rd minute before setting off a counter attack. She located Carpenter to her right, who then squared in a cross to the box after running out of space. Strangely, her delivery was allowed to go to waste, and England are saved from what could have been an embarrassing situation.

As if out of character, the Australians switched off allowing England’s Toone to score three minutes later.

England held on to their 1-0 lead into the break, and it was deservedly so based on the balance of play, having moved the ball with better fluidity and enjoying far more control than the co-hosts, especially following Toone’s crisp opening goal. So far, Matildas have created chances, but have failed to get Kerr into the groove at and present a rather too passive appearance.

That sprint in the Matildas game did arrive in the 63rd minute but their talismanic star had to do it all by herself. From nowhere and out of sheer nothing, Australia find themselves on level terms with the Lionesses, as Kerr drove deep at the center of the England defense before scuttling her powerful shot into the top corner of the net, leaving Earps in goal for England simply hopeless. Again, Stadium Australia erupts in salute to a splendid goal from their outstanding star.

The build up to the goal is revelation that Matildas can do it if only they put their minds to it. Kerr’s goal has sent Australian fans into ecstasy. Her effort was simply a phenomenal goal from distance.

The Chelsea forward was sent scuttling towards the England goalposts after being freed just after the halfway line with a sublime pass.

She then drove through powerfully towards goal, and with her marker closing in, Kerr hit an unbelievable shot from outside the box which beats Earps all ends up.

This goal could easily be the goal of the tournament given the circumstances and occasion. This Lady is exceptional! This is a phenom of a star! Give it up for Sam Kerr! What a goooooolazooooo!

When Australia needed her most, Matildas’ captain has yet again, stood up for the nation, massively lifting up the atmosphere at Stadium Australia.
Kerr’s goal has reset the game, but Australia’s Matildas though not still at their best, but are at least on the level with the opponent, which of the teams will push on to win the match from here on is left to providence and the side that can find the gusto to push ahead, to decide.

Out of nowhere, Kerr has been playing like the superstar she is. In the 70th minute, Australia won a corner on the left side that Cooney-Cross sends in with a lovely curving effort, which forces Earps to punch away at the far post.

The Matildas picked up the ball again with a cross issued into the box. The ball found Kerr on the end of it but the talismanic forward failed to get in the needed power into her shot to trouble the England keeper.

The atmosphere in the stadium has changed completely, and Australian fans now believe they can go all the way.

However, soon after the 70th minute, it was apparent that the Lionesses were the more of the two sides with the required determination to gatecrash into the final. Russo almost puts England ahead again, but her header flew wide of the target.
In just another minute, the Matildas are again caught snoozing after another brief spell on the back foot as England edges ahead. It was as before, another major howler by the Aussie rear line.

Carpenter makes a poor effort of shielding the ball and is bullied off it by Hemp who then sliced it past a jaded Arnold in goal for the Matildas. England 2-1 Australia.
This Australia charade is a perfect example of how not to be a timid co-host of the planet’s most glamorous sporting festival.
The Matildas’ bloodless approaches in this tie will become a demonstration for future hosts of any sporting event on how not to allow all your hard work and investments vaporize into a smoke of nothingness.
Even Kerr cannot hide her shock over her teammates’ sheer lack of self-belief and motivation as she stood in the center of the field in utmost disbelief of the massive charade on exhibition by the Matildas’ defense line.
What a sight for sore eyes! A national consternation for Another sold out crowd of 75,784 at Stadium Australia.

Hemp has silenced Stadium Australia with a goal that materialized out of a massive defensive blunder. A long ball from Millie Bright bounces harmlessly towards the Australian backline.

Hemp arrived in tandem with the ball having perfectly timed her run and dislodged the ball away from an undecided Carpenter, before turning quickly and firing a ground shot towards the far post from the left side of the box which completely left Arnold on wrong footing.

In the 84th minute, Matildas got what was arguably their best chance in the entire encounter when Cortnee Vine picked up the ball just inside the box on the right side.

She then fired in a shot towards the far post, with Earps just doing enough to get a hand on it.

The rebound landed in the path of the arriving Emily van Egmond, whose marker made it to the ball before her and just in the nick of time.

Two minutes later, it was Kerr who was scuffing a glorious chance to level up for the Matildas. Australia won a corner kick on their right side of the field.

The delivery arrived with the crossed effort pinballing between the players in the penalty area before landing perfectly for Kerr, who tried to volley the effort to the top corner of the near post, but just misses her mark.

A minute later, England again teaches Australia a lesson in clinical finishing, allowing Russo to hand England one more foot in the World Cup final on Sunday against Spain.

Russo is located on the right side of the field by Hemp following a counter attack from an earlier corner kick by Australia.

She then struck a wonderful effort towards the far post which eludes Arnold’s save. The Australian backline have done it once again by letting the rest of the units of the team down when it most mattered. It is England now 3-1 up.

The Australian players look downcast and out as their World Cup hopes look done and dusted. And it is just as well.

Though it was indeed a very difficult night for Matildas and least of all the type of delivery they expected put on the showcase, Australia should be take enough satisfaction out of their achievement and the unity they have harnessed for the country.

Mizzou captures Nigerian 5-star defensive end

Newly recruited Williams Nwaneri is already feeling genuine vibes inside the Tiger’s den

Five-star defensive lineman prospect Williams Nwaneri answers questions from the media after committing to the Unviersity of Missouri on August 14, 2023, in Lee's Summit, Mo.

Mizzou football fended off some grand challengers to secure a commitment from five-star edge rusher Williams Nwaneri on Monday, marking one of the most momentous days in Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz’s tenure, Calum McAndrew reported for Columbia Daily Tribune.

From inside the gym at Lee’s Summit North High School in Kansas City, Nwaneri, the third-ranked player in his class on 247Sports and Rivals’ rankings, put on a Missouri cap, pledging his future to the Tigers over Oklahoma, Georgia, Oregon and Tennessee.

Here’s what the elite high school senior said to reporters following his commitment ceremony:

Why Mizzou?

“I feel like (the coaching staff) was genuine,” Nwaneri said. “It didn’t feel like they were trying to sell me something. It felt like it was real relationships.”

Nwaneri took five visits to Missouri, the first dating back to October 2021 and the most recent in late June.

Even if he wasn’t being sold something, he is in line to get quite a lot — and possibly quickly.

my-project-2023-08-14t105111-596.jpg

Nwaneri, under Missouri’s impending name, image and likeness laws passed under House Bill 417, is eligible to make money off of NIL as soon as Sept. 1, provided he has signed some form of written agreement with Mizzou. He meets the criteria to benefit from this nationally unique law because he is a Missouri high school student who is — as of Monday — committed to one of Missouri’s post-secondary institutions.

When did he tell the coaches?

“I had already been silently committed,” Nwaneri said. “I told (the coaches) like three, four weeks ago.”

Missouri fans might remember a pair of teaser tweets from Drinkwitz — gifs of the letter “W.”

When did the head coach send those out? July 23 and July 24.

Or … exactly three weeks before Williams Nwaneri’s commitment.

Even still, a silent commitment is far less comfortable ground than a verbal one. It took a little longer for the prospect to fully make up his mind.

“Probably about a week ago I knew 100% that it’s Mizzou,” Nwaneri said. “That’s when I made the decision.”

Five-star defensive lineman prospect Williams Nwaneri dons a University of Missouri hat to officially commit to MU on August 14, 2023, in Lee's Summit, Mo.

What kind of player is Missouri getting?

“They’re getting a positionally flexible player, a player that they can count on, really just a player that’s going to show up every day,” Nwaneri said.

And what kind of person is Missouri getting?

“They’re getting a great person, a caring person. Once I get there I’m gonna give 100% every day, show up every day,” he said.

The defensive end is the top-ranked player in Missouri and the top-ranked defensive player in the nation on all major recruiting services. It’s the second time in three cycles that Missouri has lured the top in-state player to stay inside Missouri’s borders, after Luther Burden III in the Class of 2022. He’s the sixth five-star talent planning to take their talents to Columbia, following Burden, Dorial Green-Beckham in the Class of 2012, Terry Beckner Jr. in 2015, Sheldon Richardson in 2009 and Blaine Gabbert in 2008.

Was the SEC important?

“It was very important. I feel like the SEC is the best of the best competition,” Nwaneri said. “It was a big part of my decision.”

It was widely reported that Missouri and Oklahoma were the frontrunners to land Nwaneri. Georgia and Tennessee also were interested, and the Lee’s Summit North product visited Oregon.

During his recruitment, those teams spanned three conferences.

Four out of five of those teams, by the time Nwaneri is eligible to play his first game in black and gold, will be in the SEC. The other will have swapped the Pac-12 for the Big Ten.

Oklahoma debuts in the Southeastern Conference next year. The Sooners are set to visit Memorial Stadium to face the Tigers in the regular season, setting up a potential meeting with Nwaneri, who they were favorites to land for long periods of his commitment.

Five-star defensive lineman prospect Williams Nwaneri smiles after his commitment ceremony on August 14, 2023, in Lee's Summit, Mo.

How actively will he recruit other players?

“I might get in their ear a little bit, but I’m gonna let them make their decision, too.”

Attention now turns to another five star from Missouri: Ryan Wingo.

Wingo, a wide receiver out of St. Louis University High School, is the No. 2-ranked player in the state, behind only Nwaneri. He doesn’t have a commitment date set, but the Tigers are well in the running for his pledge.

Missouri’s challengers: Georgia, Alabama and Texas are among the long list of other teams hoping to land the wideout.

If Wingo joins Nwaneri in choosing Missouri, it would be the first time in program history that the Tigers have landed two five-star prospects in the same cycle.

Mixed reactions greets Omenihu’s suspension

Members of the NFL Star’s Nigerian community adopt a wait and see attitude

Charles Omenihu - NFL Defensive end - News, Stats, Bio and more - The AthleticUntil proven guilty, Charles Omenihu remains on suspected misdemeanor domestic violence charges for allegedly violently pushing his girlfriend to the ground

By Ed Emeanua

Mixed reactions continues to trail Friday’s announcement by the National Football League (NFL), it had temporarily prevented Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu from playing in the 2023 NFL season’s opening six fixtures over a disobedience of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The Chief’s defensive end is son of Sunday and Regina Omenihu, who reside in Garland, Texas, forcing members of the DE’s parents’ Nigerian community into a wait-and-see-attitude until the matter is judiciously resolved.

Most members of this community though not wanting to speak publicly, are however hopeful that the issue would be eventually resolved amicably to the Kansas City player’s favor, to avert the unwarranted adverse image to their community that a conviction from such an alleged heinous and barbaric conduct against the NFL Star would inevitably divert to them.

The suspension follows a January event when Omenihu, then playing under the emblem of the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested in San Jose, California for questioning pertaining to an alleged home brutality offense. According to San Jose police, a woman claiming to be the defensive end’s girlfriend had reported to them that Omenihu manhandled her to the ground.

Following the lingering legal issues currently surrounding the Chiefs player’s alleged assault of his girlfriend in January, the NFL finally decided last week to act on Omenihu’s likely misdemeanor domestic violence offense by handing him a six match suspension to run through the first six games from the start of the season.

The move stems from the fact that a person is assumed innocent before the law until proven guilty. So, Omenihu gets to play again after serving out the League’s enforced suspension of his involvement in the games over what the NFL have called an infringement of the organization’s personal conduct policy.

Omenihu can resume practice with the Chiefs in training camp and is free to participate in preseason Gridiron football but, the defensive end will have to stay off the main league season until Week 7 of the NFL before he can take part in any official game.

Nonetheless, there are curious observers on Twitter with medley reservations concerning the NFL’s enforcement of what the League calls its personal conduct policy. Most of the initial reactions centered on Omenihu’s no status change after NFL’s Kyle Shanahan initial comment on the issue following the then 49ers player’s domestic violence problem on Monday, January 23, 2023.

ESPN NFL reporter Nick Wagoner wrote on January 25: “The matter will be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy. There is no change to his status.”

His post then drew @MunchTVx reply: “Arrest him now.”

Michael Hauff @TheFFRealist interjected: “Gotta imagine this is the first question coming Kyle Shanahan’s way.”

Next to comment was 49ers Throwback @49ers_Throwback who responded thus: “@OurSf49ers,”  followed by the images of two eyes and a hand writing.

WittyMoniker @pyhtila79 contended: “Makes sense. The accusation comes with no evidence. The arrest was out of caution. You can’t take a man’s job on an accusation. They will need to settle it in court and then you decide on his NFL status. If he guilty throw him out of league for all I care.”
And Johnny Carson @mrcockburnt rationalized: “Didn’t they find no evidence on her? Like I mean depending on where she fell yeah, there might not be anything. But you’d think an NFL DL pushing you over would leave at least a red mark or bruise.”

And Pule49ERSLAKERSUSCDODGERS @PNgata caustically stated: “If he hit his wife arrest him, if he didn’t, let him play.”
Master Biter @Go_On_Bite_Me was even far more pessimistic and wrote: “Translation:” “We need Charles Omenihu this Sunday, so it doesn’t matter if he shoved his girlfriend to the ground, or even if he throws her out a window, we’re gonna hide like gutless cowards behind the league’s personal conduct policy, and he’s gonna play.”

Just as ElCigarroBoricua @cigarroboricua cautioned: Did you all recall Zeke Elliot being charged and then were all lies.. until its proven he is not guilty. If he did it he should be suspended and i’m a niner fan…”
But j CHERNY @jCHERNY2 wrote with such palpable bewilderment: “Interesting that everyone is saying to arrest and suspend this guy, without any physical evidence of an injury, while Kamara played last season after he and his posse beat the hell out of a guy, with video evidence.”

Just as Jared Hammer (BlueCheckMark) @jjjhammer stated sarcastically: “Hopefully he didn’t place any bets on the AFC matchups. There would be swift and harsh punishments for that completely heinous behavior.”

Spain romps into World Cup final

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: The Red One defeats the Blue and yellow 2-1

Spain’s XI: Coll, Batlle, Paredes, Codina, Carmona, Abelleira, Bonmati, Putellas, Redondo, Hermoso, Caldentey

Sweden XI: Musovic, Andersson, Eriksson, Ilestedt, Bjorn, Rubensson, Angeldal, Rolfo, Asllani, Kaneryd, Blackstenius

Spain’s national Women’s football side, La Roja (The Red One) have become the first team to qualify for the final of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament after their 2-1 victory over Sweden’s Blågult (The Blue and yellow), in the first semi-finals of the event at the Eden Park  in Auckland, New Zealand.

Spain had the initial moments of sustained attack, after easily settling into their renown possessive football brand early on with which. Three minutes into the tie, Caldentey outmaneuvered a Blågult defender on the left but her decent cross was easily claimed by La Roja Goalkeeper Musovic.

A minute later at the other end, Sweden’s Blackstenius’ feed to Asllani instead of taking a shot from outside the area was as well good enough only as a lost opportunity for the Swedish striker to score.

By the 7th minute of the game, Sweden have already caught up with Spain on the possession tally in the attacking data, and easily drop drop into a very tight defensive shape when they lose the ball.

Bonmati’s decent run on the right in the 11th minute met with a tight Sweden defense to deal with the threat, and Redondo’s cross moments later only sailed out of play as the game continued with the expectation for one of the sides to usurp the creativity.

At the 16th minute mark of the encounter, Sweden are having difficult to put together a string of attacking play but continued to hold their defensive line against a La Roja cohesive attacking setup. Then Rolfo did enough to win the ball back in midfield and drove into the Spanish defense but is swiftly outnumbered by several Women in red and blue.

Then in the 33rd minute, the highly talented Spanish side from deep in their own half clearly played six first-touch passes in a row to extricate themselves from trouble before earning a free-kick on the half-way line that also failed to break the deadlock despite their overwhelming dominance.

As the las soñadoras (the dreamers) of Spain continued to press their advantage in possession football play, the Blågult’s defensive line also persisted in holding their line ultimately leading to scores remaining scoreless at half time.

On resumption of play in the second half, Caldentey drifted inside in the 47th minute with Redondo making a good run from the right to make herself the target of a cutting ball from Caldentey, but she only succeeded in putting too much on it for Musovic to claim the ball.

Then in the 56th minute, Spain turned over the ball it in a dangerous area leaving Blackstenius free inside the box, but she strayed with the ball to such an acute angle that she couldn’t generate enough power on her shot to trouble Coll.

At this stage, Paralluelo is on for Spain to replace the quiet Putellas.

Then the goals started to pour in. Spain took the  lead in the 85′ and it was yet again the boots of the fabulous Paralluelo shooting La Roja ahead.

Sweden failed to deal with a cross from the left allowing it to fall perfectly for Paralluelo, who lashed a right-footed shot past Musovic.

Spain take the lead with their first shot on target, with eight minutes to go.

Two minutes later, it was Blomqvist’s turn and she leveled the scores as two of Sweden’s substitutes combined to notch the equalizer. Hurtig delivered a nicely guided header from a cross from the left for Blomqvist to smash past Coll.

A minute later, it was again Spain going ahead. The ball come to Carmona on the left side of the box and she was allowed too much time on her own to punish the Blågult for their lack of concentration. Carmona unleashed a powerful left-footed strike which crashes into the underside of the bar to elude Musovic effort at a hand save. It is Spain 2-1 Sweden on 90 minutes.

There was now an incredible uproar and scenes at Eden Park as las soñadoras dreams became reality. Even another 7 minutes of injury time failed to wipe out the dream of the Women in Red who are now guaranteed of a place in the final showdown of this tournament.

La Roja is now in line to clash with the winner of Wednesday’s second semi final game between the Lionesses of England and the Matildas of Australia in the epic final game billed to take place on Sunday, August 20 at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
