Over Tottenham boss’ claim that he ‘always wins things’ in his second year
The Australian questioned a reporter whether he was ‘supposed to lie’ and not speak the truth Image credit: Daily Mail/Mail Online
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has expressed his confusion over criticism towards his claims that he ‘always wins things’ in his second year at clubs, Kieran Lynch reports for Mail Online.
The Australian made the factually correct comment after Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in Sunday’s north London derby.
Some argue Postecoglou’s comments might have put more pressure on him, given that Tottenham have not lifted any silverware since the League Cup in 2008.
Ahead of Tottenham’s third round Carabao Cup clash with Coventry tomorrow, a reporter brought up Postecoglou’s comments during his pre-match press conference.
The subject appeared to frustrate Postecoglou, who fired back: ‘It’s amazing isn’t it? I just stated a fact and it seems like… am I supposed to lie or say it never happened?

‘But no, it’s confusing to me how people are making a big deal out of something, I’m not sure how am I supposed to answer something that is true.
‘Like, If I don’t win anything in the second year this year and come out next year and say ‘well I always win something,’ well no that’s not true.
‘I’ve just said something that’s true. And it seems like it’s upset a lot of people for some reason.’
The reporter responded that it was ‘unusual’ for a manager to be so ‘bashful’ about their team’s prospects.
Postecoglou though appeared to be baffled by any suggestion that his comment was ‘boasting’.
He hit back: ‘Do you really think it’s me boasting? How am I supposed to answer something that’s true? Is it to say, well actually, no, it wasn’t that important, they were easy competitions and they don’t mean anything.
‘If you’ve achieved something aren’t you supposed to say ‘yes, I have and that’s what I hope to do again’.
‘I’m not really sure why people misconstrue it as me trying to boast about something, I answered a question, and that’s always happened, my plan is for it to happen again this year and if it doesn’t happen then I can’t answer the question the same way next year.’
A single goal from Arsenal defender Gabriel was enough to separate the two rivals on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Tottenham boss was asked if he could replicate the second-season winning streak he’s maintained with every club he’s managed through his career.
Postecoglou struck a defiant tone in his response, but could barely conceal his irritation at the journalist’s who asked whether he could win a trophy in his second season at Spurs.
‘Yeah, absolutely,’ the Australian manger responded. ‘Am I going to answer the question or are you going to keep asking it?
‘No, absolutely. I’ll correct myself. I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year.

Arsenal could risk European problems by risking Atalanta clash in favor of rest for Manchester City as Mikel Arteta reminded of Champions League benefits, Tom Canton reports for Football London
Yet while many would argue therefore that heavy changes need to be made ahead of the weekend’s action, there are incentives for Arteta to ensure he wins the midweek fixture. Atalanta are no pushovers having been crowned Europa League champions, beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final.
A 3-2 win over fellow European competitors Fiorentina, who embark on another run at the UEFA Europa Conference League next month, got them back on track at the weekend after a 4-0 mauling from Inter. Arsenal will be looking however to strike now and pick up maximum points.
The days of group stages are long gone and now points certainly do mean prizes. The higher up the new league system you finish, the better chance teams have of avoiding two extra games in February as sides who finish in the top eight will be straight through to the last-16.
Meanwhile, teams finishing from ninth through to 24th will play a home and away play-off match with the winning eight sides making up the first stage of the official knockout phase of the competition. Yet there is even more incentive for Arsenal too.
The more games Arsenal win, the better their European coefficient becomes and having spent some time outside of the Champions League and failing to progress as far as expected in the Europa League, their coefficient has suffered. Arsenal are currently 19th in the rankings on 62 points.
They’re five behind 18th-place Barcelona and seven behind 16th-placed West Ham. Despite missing Champions League football last season, Liverpool remain fourth 34 points above Arsenal – improvements to the coefficient will help the Gunners be in pot 1 in future years, as opposed to pot 2 like this year.
Finishing in the top eight also means a new seeding format will benefit Arsenal. In the round of 16, seeded teams will play the second leg at home and will play an unseeded side who made their way to the last-16 phase through the play-off round.

The chants seemed to distract Dunne as The Celtic Warrior dodged a hand crusher to perform an Alabama slam directly onto the announce table.
Despite the abuse from the WWE Universe, Pete Dunne defeats his former mentor Sheamus
Dunne withstood a monumental amount of punishment from The Celtic Warrior but kept fighting.
After being brutalized with the 10 Beats of the Bodhran, Dunne went for the Shillelagh, but Sheamus wrenched it from Dunne’s hands. With the referee preoccupied with taking away the weapon from Sheamus, Dunne used a cricket bat to wallop Sheamus.
Dunne then hit a huge knee strike to earn the big-time win.

In their first defense of the World Tag Team Titles, Finn Bálor and JD McDonagh faced The New Day, who were looking to become champions for the 13th time and first time in three years.
Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods lit up McDonagh early with scintillating double-team maneuvers, taking new pages out of their playbook.
The New Day had multiple instances where they could have won, but their momentum was derailed by the arrival of the rest of The Judgment Day.
The LWO, however, offset The Judgment Day’s interference.
With chaos at ringside, Woods hit the Limit Break elbow right onto McDonagh, but the referee was too busy dealing with what was transpiring at ringside.
With the referee unable to count, The Judgment Day took advantage when Bálor hit an assisted Coup de Grace to win the match and retain their title.

Damian Priest defeats “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio
Damian Priest dismantled “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio to start the match, leaving Mysterio little room to stage a comeback.
As Priest attempted the Razor’s Edge on Mysterio, Finn Bálor provided a much needed distraction, allowing “Dirty” Dom to regain his footing.
The antics from The Judgment Day continued as Liv Morgan prevented Mysterio from being pinned after a falcon arrow from Priest. Rhea Ripley then took out Morgan with a glorious Spear over the announce table.
With the match completely broken down, Priest executed the South of Heaven to gain the win.
As soon as the match ended, The Judgment Day ruthlessly attacked Priest and Ripley.
Jey Uso was stopped in his tracks when he attempted to help Priest and Ripley, as Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker hit a vicious Spear, allowing The Judgment Day to stand tall over Priest and Ripley.
Damian Priest is out to destroy “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio
Last week, The Judgment Day fought underhanded battles on many fronts, first and foremost unleashing a sinister ambush on The Terror Twins.
This Monday, Damian Priest is out for retribution when he takes on “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio. With Rhea Ripley most likely still feeling the effects of numerous attacks by their one-time allies, however, will Priest be forced to contend with the entire Judgment Day alone as he attempts to wash his hands of “Dirty” Dom?

Then All Elite Wrestling is off to Wilkes-Barre, PA for next Wednesday’s live episode of DYNAMITE where Chris Jericho and Orange Cassidy go one-on-one for the first time in four years!
TNT Championship Match:
Upon hearing of Jack Perry's open challenge for the TNT Championship, Christopher Daniels wants to remind him that he may be an interim EVP, but he's still a WRESTLER at heart!
It’s been four months since “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels last wrestled inside an AEW ring; that night he and Matt Sydal were defeated by The Young Bucks in a World Tag Team Title Eliminator match, and shortly thereafter The EVPs elected to fire CD.
AEW CEO Tony Khan made the choice to bring Daniels back to the fold, not in his previous position as coach, but as an Interim EVP in the wake of Kenny Omega’s absence due to the double-blow of diverticulitis and being assaulted by his apparently former Elite brothers. Daniels has not made life easy on The Young Bucks nor the rest of The Elite, in fact if it wasn’t for his interventions, Matthew and Nicholas Jackson would’ve just handed the TNT Championship over to Jack Perry following Adam Copeland’s injury instead of “The Scapegoat” having to earn it in the FORBIDDEN DOOR 2024 Ladder Match.
Tonight on COLLISION that decision comes full circle as Daniels himself has stepped up to to answer Jack Perry’s TNT Title Open Challenge! Now Jack and CD have a wealth of experience facing one another, but all in tag team, trios, and multi-man bouts, they’ve never faced off one-on-one prior to tonight, nor has “The Fallen Angel” stepped into the ring with “The Scapegoat”. What Daniels knows is “Jungle Boy”, the happy-go-lucky youth who stood with Luchasaurus and Marko Stunt in the early days of AEW. He knows the Jurassic Express trio he faced at the first ALL OUT in 2019, as well as during the premiere edition of AEW DARK, the kid he teamed up with at THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS in April 2021, and who he hasn’t faced off with since DYNAMITE: BLOOD & GUTS 2021.
That being said, Daniels has watched this transformation occur in Jack Perry, he’s been on top of the situation from an official standpoint as he did his best to manage the AEW landscape after The Elite assaulted Tony Khan. He’s watched Perry try to hang himself up as some martyr for All Elite Wrestling, but “The Fallen Angel” is here tonight to pull Jack down off his cross and pull the TNT Championship out of his hands!
Christopher Daniels has been a highly decorated champion throughout his 31 year career, but in All Elite Wrestling he has thus far been unable to capture a singles championship. Will tonight be the night that changes when CD gets his first TNT Title opportunity in 18 months?
Trios Match:
Hologram & The Conglomeration (ROH World Champion Mark Briscoe & Kyle O’Reilly) vs. Premier Athletes (Ariya Daivari & Tony Neese) and The Beast Mortos
It’s been a busy week for The Conglomeration, and Orange Cassidy in particular, starting with ALL OUT 2024. Mark Briscoe and OC both took part in the Continental Championship Four-Way match in Chicago last Saturday, then they came to DYNAMITE on Wednesday to dump some humiliation on Chris Jericho and his Learning Tree, were victorious in trios action on RAMPAGE over Dark Order, then OC took a trip to Mexico to participate in CMLL’s 91 ANIVERSARIO event, leaving his other two compatriots to compete tonight on COLLISION with a new third man at their side!
Hologram has been on fire since debuting in AEW during the Arlington, TX residency, scoring eight consecutive wins (three singles, two tags, and three trios) and wowing audiences with his high-flying style. He previously united with Kyle and OC to great success over The Beast Mortos, Johnny TV, and Lee Moriarty, now he’s stepping into the ring with O’Reilly and Mark Briscoe to face two of the Premier Athletes and, once again, The Beast Mortos. There’s definitely a rivalry building between these two luchadors, especially since Hologram also holds a singles victory over the monster, but can he get a third victory on Mortos, or will his partnership with Ariya Daivari and Tony Neese payoff where Johnny TV and Lee Moriarty did not? Will this be the night Hologram is handed his first loss, or will he continue to blaze forward on this unbeaten streak with The Conglomeration as his allies?

AEW World Trios Champion Wheeler Yuta vs. Anthony Henry
We have not heard from Wheeler Yuta since he broke down in tears watching Jon Moxley’s cold-blooded attack on Bryan Danielson during ALL OUT 2024. We don’t know where his head is at or which side of these apparent battle lines he sits, but what we do know is that the 3-Time ROH Pure Champion is scheduled to compete tonight against Anthony Henry. The two men met during ROH ON HONOR CLUB #75 six weeks ago, a bout won by Yuta, but that was before he watched The Blackpool Combat Club seemingly disintegrate in front him barely two weeks after they won the AEW World Trios Titles. There are far more questions than answers about this situation, especially about the status of those championships, but Yuta better find a way to focus on the task at hand or this Workhorsemen is going to dismantle him…

Trios Competition:
Bang Bang Gang (Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn, & Juice Robinson) vs. Cage of Agony (Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage, & Toa Liona)
Austin thinks it's time he joins his #BangBangGang teammates in the badass nickname department, and Gates of Agony have a few ideas for him…
Speaking of the AEW World Trios Championship, there are plenty of teams on the hunt for them, especially after watching the wedge driven between the three men who currently hold them, but that means getting into a position to be a championship challenger. Two of those teams are Bang Bang Gang and Cage of Agony, and tonight during COLLISION they will clash for the very first time! Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage, and Toa Liona have done this dance with The Gunns and Jay White before, in fact they lost the ROH World Six-Man Title to them back in January, but this is the first time they’ve done it with Juice Robinson in the mix, and it’s quite a different ballgame with that x-factor involved!
According to Juice, it’s all about the wins and building momentum in the Trios division, so by that logic right now the BBG are in the driver’s seat with two consecutive AEW victories while CoA lost their last AEW trios outing but scored victory in the two previous. With both teams jockeying for position, who will step up as potential challengers to Wheeler Yuta, Claudio Castagnoli, and “The Bastard” PAC?
Return to Action:
Yuka Sakazaki vs. Serena Deeb
Months ago it looked like Yuka Sakazaki and Serena Deeb were headed for a fight, but an injury suffered by Yuka in her April 20th victory over Emi Sakura derailed their confrontation. Five months later, Yuka Sakazaki has been cleared for competition and she wants to pick up right where she left off with Serena Deeb! “The Professor” is coming into this after coming up short in the TBS Championship #1 Contenders Four-Way while Sakazaki has won her last five AEW singles matches, and seven in a row overall! Can Yuka make her return to action a victorious one, or will Deeb put her right back on the shelf for another five months?
FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) vs. Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson)
At ALL OUT: LONDON 2024 James Drake and Zack Gibson, collectively the Grizzled Young Veterans, made a tremendous impact on the AEW tag team division by assaulting Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler following their loss to The Young Bucks. It wasn’t GYV’s first time on the AEW, that came in a loss to The Acclaimed back in April, but this was by far more impactful. In the few weeks since Wembley, GYV and FTR have been thorns in each other’s side, with Drake and Gibson being completely taken out of Tag Team Casino Gauntlet by Cash and Dax, robbing them of any possibility of earning a World Tag Title match at DYNAMITE: GRAND SLAM in two weeks.
Tonight on COLLISION these fast enemies will go to war for the very first time, though given the animosity already built between the four it will likely not be the last! Will we see GYV even the score for DYNAMITE and the Casino Gauntlet, or will the 2-Time AEW World Tag Champions show Drake and Gibson why many consider them the greatest team in wrestling today?

Cooper on game

“It does feel like a defeat, there’s no doubt about that. I thought we were really good in the first half, to come away to a team like Palace and play like we did. We should have gone 1-0 up early on, we missed a good chance. We were more than good for at least 1-0. I enjoyed what I saw from the team, how we played, the application, the decisions we made. There was so much growth in what we’re trying to become.
“It was a perfect start to the second half, but then the complete opposite in how we managed going 2-0 up. That was a real pivotal moment in the game because from a very dour atmosphere, it turned into a very supportive one. Then you’re up against it on and off the pitch.
“But Palace chucked everything at us, made a load of changes and put every attacking player on they could. They had six or seven on the back-line and we matched numbers. As well as Mads played, he didn’t have to make save after save after save. I felt we defended in our low block well. We didn’t want to be there as much as we did, but the game ended up going like that.
“I never really felt like the goal was coming. It could, because of the territory. We were trying to get counter-attacks with Abdul on the pitch. Any chances they were having were from difficult areas and they were going wide and would have been difficult opportunities to score. To give the penalty away is frustrating.
“I really want to see the absolute offside image of the first goal. If it is, no problem, we’ll hold our hands up, but we can’t be calling off-sides on suggestions which is only what we’ve seen at the moment. We need to get that image quickly off the Premier League. If it is, I’ll accept it.”
Manchester United meshed-out an easy 2-0 road victory at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday to punch a win that left The Saints teeth gnashing amidst a catalog of missed chances.
In a slowly evolving Premier League season for Erik ten-Hag’s side, the victory at Southampton could be the turning point for a brilliant Man Utd challenge for the premier League shield.
In the last two decades, Manchester United have found Southampton to be quite a good hunting ground having gone unbeaten at St. Mary’s Stadium in such a lengthy spate of time. With their last loss at Southampton coming in 2003, The Red Devils were playing in a quite happy place.
It was the home side that got into the gears early on the game. In the 7′ mark, fanciful wing-play by Tyler Dibling after picking up possession on the right, then swerving in on his left foot and unleashing a curling effort saw Andre Onana beating the ball away from danger.

Minutes later, it was more sharp reflexes from Andre Onana who darted off his line to brushoff the ball away from Cameron Archer, as The Saints left winger looked ready to pounce onto a long pass through the defensive line.
in After the first 14 minutes into the fray, Southampton’s favor was at a staggering 56% in possession.
It took well over 16 minutes for the visitors to force Aaron Ramsdale into making the first save of the afternoon for home side. The Saints’ goalkeeper positioned himself in the right place to deny Joshua Zirkzee from close range.
Between the 16′ and the 20′ mark, the game swung to each side’s determination in a yo-yo as the runs became an end-to-end offensive.
Southampton again dominated on the 24′ mark with an assault down the right with Yukinari Sugawara slashing in on his left foot. Matthijs de Ligt was found well-positioned inside his own six-yard box to deny The Saints their opener with Andre Onana left stranded.
The pressing from Southampton was so severe that Kobbie Mainoo was pressured in the 27th minute into picking up the first yellow card of the afternoon and his third of the season for handball.
A minute later, a free header for Lesley Ugochukwu was spurned by the Frenchman after rising highest in the box but can only direct his effort over the bar.

On the 33rd minute, Dibling headed into the box, deleted Diogo Dalot, leaving the Portuguese with no other chance than to sweep out his leg.

However, Cameron Archer took what amounted to an eternity to get to the mark to take the spot kick which Onana was wise to, diving down to his right to swat off the ball and then getting back up to smooch-out the rebound.
That penalty miss proved to be demoralizing for The Saints as they went from a missed penalty to going behind in a matter of two minutes.
Man Utd enacted a short corner kick which Bruno Fernandes flicked into the box allowing an arriving Matthijs de Ligt to nod home for his first Red Devils goal in the 35th minute.
On the 41ist minute, again, from another creative corner and another goal for the visitors. This time Marcus Rashford snuffed-out his goal drought in remarkable style, angling a shot in off the post which left Ramsdale in no-man’s land.

From that point it was Man Utd held all the way as The Red Devils held on to their lead and possession to end the half 2-0 up.
With 90 and 6 extra minutes past kickoff, assisted by Dalot, Alejandro Garnacho right footed his shot from the centre of the box to the top right corner to ensure a Manchester United victory.
Coaches find alignment at TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2023 Coaches Symposium

No tension. No pressure. No weight of a nation on their shoulders, CAFonline reports.
This has been the mood at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2023 Coaches Symposium in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire between 12 – 13 September, where head coaches of national teams across the African continent came together to discuss the current coaching trends in the aftermath of the AFCON 2023.
At breakfast, during coffee breaks, lunch and dinner, coaches who mostly met on the touchlines of many a stadium across Africa found themselves deep in conversations about football – the beautiful game – the one that has for decades defined who they are character-wise but also that has defined their personas.
“This is a great event. A lot of learning, a lot of reflection. You always learn from reflections and in general, it is good to bring coaches together to exchange, to bring different perspectives, to discuss different sections like goalkeeping, analysis, statistics and the coaches’ views. I had a lot of good talks at breakfast,” explained Otto Addo, Ghana head coach.
“It is good to meet coaches in a different environment. To be honest, some coaches are not sympathetic especially during the game but when you get to know them now, they are much stress free and then you can see their main character and they regret how they were but sometimes, that is how emotions are so it is a good place to get to know each other and also, there are a lot of coaches that I did not know,” he added.
“So, it is interesting to listen to them and to see which problems they face also then we compare, sometimes you think you have problems, but some have even worse problems, so it is just very, very good to see other perspectives, other opinions and to discuss other things. It is a great opinion to learn.”
In the coaches’ panel discussion, Mauritania head coach Amir Abdou who was sitting in between the Angola coach Pedro Gonçalves and Cape Verde coach Pedro ‘Bubista’ Brito joked that it was rather peculiar to sit in between two coaches he lost to recently.
Angola edged Mauritania 3-2 in Group D in Bouaké in January while Cape Verde edged Mauritania 1-0 nine days later in the Round of 16 in Abidjan at the AFCON 2023 and this week on Tuesday 2-0 in the AFCON 2025 Qualifiers.
“I am joking though but on a serious note, it is a great pleasure to be here sharing with my colleagues and learning from all the presentations as we analyze the AFCON 2023. We might be on opposite ends during matches, but we are colleagues,” Abdou said.
The Lions of Chinguetti despite these two losses mesmerized many at home and abroad with their fighting spirit, resilience and ability to dream big even when the odds were stacked against them progressing from the group stages at the third time of asking.
Bubista added to the charm, “We have immense respect for each other. We are brothers in arms regardless of the result of the game. This has been a great experience.”
The matchups continue between the two coaches with Mauritania set to host Cape Verde in the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025 Qualifiers on 18 November in Nouakchott in the return leg of this decisive fixture.
Both teams have amassed a win each over Botswana and are tied at three points with a -1 goal difference behind table leaders Egypt who have six points in Group C.
