Nigeria and Nottingham Forest FC of England striker Taiwo Awoniyi intends to help his club win over Nigerian supporters before the end of his contract.
The 24 -year old joined Forest from the Bundesliga club on a five-year deal and became the newly promoted Premier League side’s first international signing last summer. Awoniyi scored 20 goals in 48 games in all competitions last season.
“I am a Nigerian, and I know how much Nigerians love the Premiership. My target here is to win trophies with the club, make my country proud, and turn more Nigerian fans’ hearts to Nottingham Forest,” he told Nottingham Evening Gazette.
He added, “If everything goes as planned before my contract runs out, and I’m able to perform better than I did in Germany, I am very sure that many Nigerians will fall in love with Nottingham Forest. I know my people. They love good football, and I am ready to work hard to win them over to the team.”
The former Union Berlin FC of Germany striker is currently nursing an injury sustained after scoring his side’s lone goal against Southampton FC in the Premier League at the Saint Mary’s stadium early last month.
Awoniyi, 25, who won the man of the match awards against Chelsea and Southampton, may not be able to achieve his goals this season because he’s expected to be sidelined for three months due to the injury.
The 17.5 -million-pounds signing has scored four times in 21 matches in the 2022/ 2023 season. So far, this feat makes him the number 46 scorer in the Premier League.
